I live in Portland, OR, where the coffee is strong and the living is easy.
Moved here 3 and a half yrs ago from NYC (where the coffee is lousy and
the living is hard ;-) ...although there are certainly things I miss about
the big apple) I'm currently at work on a mystery novel set in 1890's
Portland, which started as a way to use some of the research I had
compiled when writing an article (which you can read at
http://www.anodynemag.com/june/feature4.html ) for Anodyne, a
local free monthly here in Portland. Since I'm currently unemployed and living
the slacker life, feel free to email me if you have any questions -- or job
offers for an out of work writer :-)

Hawaii

Greetings and salutations! My name is sigrid and I live on the Big
Island of Hawai'i and have need of intermittent (if not regular) contact
with
the outside world. I've gotten off a few times, of course, even for a
couple
of years once, but working on my B.A. and subsequent teacher
certification kept
my nose to the grind for some time. I haven't always lived here,
however. I
started in Germany as a baby, spent my pre- and elementary school years
in
Argentina and Spain, and topped that off with my highschool years in
Germany.
At 21, I "flew" away from it all, to America, the land of opportunities,
specifically Wisconsin, where I stayed 12 years, before I entered a long
spiritual journey that took me to Los Angels, Honolulu, Dallas, and
finally,
the Big Island, where I've been for the last 18 years. I have nurtured
many
interests at go through voracious reading spells, followed by long
silences in
which I digest it all. Nature is my great love, which is why I've stayed
here,
because it has diverse climatic zones and an abundance of flora and
fauna. I'm
interested in many subjects: history, geography, agriculture, anthropology
and
archeology, languages and dialects and Creoles, philosophies, travels,
and
computer applications.
Teaching as a vocation is a recent realization and
allows me to utilize my diverse background and experiences.
I'm not
familiar with chat group protocols, have been out of touch with the
current
social trends on the mainland, and seek deeper connection if I am to chat
with
anyone out there. My few experiences with chat groups were not my cup of
tea.
I am curious about the growing reputation of "the Well" and look forward
to
connecting to high minded fellow humans who still remember their hearts.
A hui
ho. sigrid.

I am a transplanted midwesterner (from a small town near Lake Wobegon in
Minnesota) currently living and working in Boston. Recently divorced
with a
gorgeous 5-1\2 year-old kindergartener, enjoying life's myriad pleasures
found
in Mother Nature. I spent six years working in the Central African
Republic
with the Peace Corps as an English teacher, Beekeeping Extension Educator
and
Agriculture & Education Program Officer (not all at the same time!)
After
Peace Corps I worked and studied at UMass Amherst where I found my groove
with
agriculture. After being downsized by Extension, I was IPM Coordinator
for one
of the largest commericial nurseries in New England for three years.
Just
recently I landed a dream job as the Assistant Superintendent/Internship
Coordinator for the Arnold Arboretum, America's first botanic garden
designed
by the father of landscape architecture, F.L. Olmsted and the Arboretum's
first
director, C.S. Sargent. After gardening all day at work, I love to read

course garden with my best little friend, the kindergartener.

During my tenure with the ISP Formerly Known as West Coast Online, I had
no
time available to participate in the Well. This was from late 1994 until
spring of 1998. When I left the company that assimilated WCO (Borg
transport ship _The Verio_), I took a badly needed sabbatical, from late
April
until just recently in October. During the later months of that break, I
dabbled in the shallow end of the Well, lurking here, participating
there. It
was fun to poke around.

I began working for Advanced Telcom Group, Inc. in late October.
Initially as
a consultant, since they were still rounding up their venture capital, so
couldn't take on any formal employees. Funding is now complete, so as of
December 1, I'm 'officially' an employee.

ATGI is a CLEC (Competitive Local Exchange Carrier), one of the new
'mini-
bell's' that have sprung up due to deregulation. ATGI will be delivering
voice
and data services to homes and businesses, initially in only a few select
markets. The initial rollout will be in the San Francisco Northbay,
centered
around our corporate and datacenter headquarters in Santa Rosa.

My role is Senior UNIX Systems Administrator. I have the good fortune and
distinct pleasure of once again working with my friend and former
business
partner, Chris Ward. We are tasked with building the servers and network
for the ISP portion of this business.

ATGI is very well funded, so we have the privilege of being able to build
this service with the right equipment and the right people *before* we
take
on any customers (WCO was a tiny, entreprenuerial startup, created by
Chris from a tiny dialup BBS. We grew the network and server
infrastructure
as the customer base grew, and it was a constant battle to keep ahead of
the service demands).

The upshot is that my very brief foray back into the Well is officially
ended -
I once again have no time to spare keeping up with the Well.

I'm writing this here because, as only a minor, peripheral part of
community
for so brief a time, it would seem kinda dumb to post in the 'pat
yourself
on the back' topic about my new job. And I'm not one to toot my own horn
anyway.

I can virtually guarantee that not a single soul among the 'active 200'
has
even noticed my departure - so to speak - nor will they ever read this
monstrosity of a .plan! But I felt it appropriate to let it be known,
however
minimally, that I didn't join a commune, or die in a flaming car-wreck,
or
what-have-you. I'm just back to being very, very, busy.

ciao!

I'm a single male, 33, into political activism, mountain biking, music (love to check out local

into words. Oh yes, I love designing and building software.

Joerg Schieb

My first contact with a computer was 1980, right in school -- an old
Hewlett Packard machine with red LED display. After the first
experiences with that black box my life changed completely. Now I
am a Computer Journalist, freelancing, writing for newspapers
and magazines (trade und business) here in Germany. Further, I
write Computer Books (you know: that how to stuff), some more
than 45 are published yet, and sometimes work for radio and
tv stations. That keeps me having enough to eat since 1985,
when I started writing, while I tended being a programmer.
I "only" write since 1987 and I like it; today I write even
short stories and things like that.

My hobbys are my profession: Writing, reading, being curious,
travelling, computers, the WELL, travelling in the NET,
technic, people and everything else which is necessary for
a good journalist.

When I'm not working, I like to read (again!), visit friends,
eat & drink, watch movies (in cinema, at least each week one
movie), playing badminton and fencing. Or sleeping, hanging
around and travelling the world (favorit places: San Francisco,
Bali, Paris).

Daniel M Quinn
611 Baylor St
Austin, TX 78703 Phone: 512-479-5081

Author of Ishmael and other works, according to Barry Kort:

". . . the writings of Daniel Quinn are so interesting to me,
because he describes a time unknown to most of us, when multiple
cultures co-existed in a dynamic but stable tension. We are seeing a
recreation of that in many conferencing sites, with one important
exception. In Daniel Quinn's model of cultures predating our own, none
of the subcommunities tried to annihilate any of the others. But our
culture is one in which it has become manifest destiny to annihilate
all smaller and weaker cultures."

He's rumored to have a local discussion group and there's supposedly a
film due out based on his book.

And more from Kort:

I liked Ishmael so much, I read three more of Quinn's books.

My Ishmael is a sequel in which the story centers around yet another
student of Ishmael's -- this time a 14 year old girl.

The Story of B is a spiritual adventure novel woven around the same
thinking that Quinn puts forth in the two Ishmael books.

Providence is a fascinating personal biography in which Quinn
describes key passages in his life that led him to eventually write
Ishmael and its sequels. I especially enjoyed learning about Quinn's
personal history and how he came to think and rethink so insightfully
about our culture.

And he appeared in the same episode of the X Files that featured Jesse
"The Body" Ventura.

just talk to them with your hands in your pockets
or email them with your hands in your pockets (use speech recognition)
or just email them in a way where pushing just cannot be sensed going on at all
or wear a granny dress with green on it
or marry them
or take on their name and impersonate them coming here with a new identity
did i already suggest these things before to you, Alexander?
that last line probably makes you feel uncomfortable, so i'll retract it

After recently reading an article posted Online

http://www.eff.org/pub/Net_culture/Ethnic_studies/latino_nii_rivera.brief

I began to wonder about the future of Online communities. Now I am not
new to the use of the Internet, but I am new to Cyber-socializing, or
Online communities such as The Well. And I have read chapters from
books and articles that speak of how the Internet can help break down
ethnic, religious and racial tensions or biases in that nobody actually
knows those things about other users. However, based on the above
article that I read, does there already exist some presumptions that
can be made about the majority of those who inhabit Internet
communities?? Despite the low prices of PCs, does the socioeconomic
position of many groups of people and individuals prevent them from
taking part in this communication revolution??

I explore this topic because I am currently trying to complete a
project concerning illiteracy in the world and how the use of the
Internet and software technology will either help or hinder those
people from engaging in communication in a literate world. And since
most people who are illiterate often inhabit what are considered fairly
deprived socioeconomic positions, I thought that it would be important
to raise the issue of whether or not Internet communication is an
advancement for everybody. And despite emerging technology, such as
voice recognition software, at whom are these tools being directed??
The above article talks about the Latino population and how they are
not in positions to take advantage of the benefits of CMC. I feel that
this article can be applied to other various groups of people globally.

He would like to apply for a scholarship for an American University somewhere to study here. He has excellent manners and is thoughtful and patient. The other new addition to Geo (not counting Mike aka Cosmo)is a student GeoArchaeologist who has actually posted a few times. I am not sure we will ever see him again. He is atttending University in England. I am currently working on a splendid 83 yr old - going on 50 retired USGS Geologist who has much to share if I can manage to get a bit of his time and pique his interest.
