Topic 40 of 79: greatnames.com ... help the Spring brainstorm webbed type names

Tue, Jul 21, 1998 (06:35) | Paul Terry Walhus (terry)
Ideas for new domain names ending in .com or .net.

To see if a name is taken type 'whois ' at a UNIX prompt or look it
up on http://www.internic.net 's whois searcher.

We need your ideas for names to register to help make money to support
the Spring, a lot of the obviously great names are taken, but there are
still some good ones out there and sometimes good ones expire and open up
again. Your ideas?

wolfie, when you have a domain name, it is essentially a single site
on the internet that you can do with as you please. you can host
a web site on it, you can put files on it for people to download, you
can host conferences on it, you can host whatever you want on it.
the only limitations are 1) the abilities of the server machine on
which you are hosting your site, 2) the amount of time and money
you have to work on the site.

i want to have a site to do all sorts of things. right now i have
a web site at www.l-comm.com but i no longer own a company called
L Comm, so i would just like to start ratthing.com for my own
personal use.

technically, you would be able to run your server off of any machine
connected to the internet. ideally, you want a machine connected to
the net 24/7 and on all the time.

For a church, $15 per month plus whatever Jeff or Tami's set up fee is to
put it on the server, if you put it on the server it's free for the setup.
Church's get 50% off our regular $30 / month dedicated website fee.

Same thing. YOu'd have to pay the nic $70 for two years, provide and
organization name and contact, and pay a small set up fee. IN your case,
it would be free, a tradeoff for your copious assistance and ideas.
You could do the setup if you felt up to it. I believe the directions are
in the projects conference, which is the place where we organize various
websites and jobs.

Jeff Kramer set up a webserver on access.spring.net for all our new sites.
Do you have an account there, Ray?

If you had to rename the spring something other than spring.net what would
it be?

I've thought about springfolks.com

It would be nice to be a dot com instead of a dot net, of course we can be
as many names as we want all pointing to the same site.

Suggestions? (it can't be an already registered name).

 Response 61 of 103: Alexander Schuth (aschuth) * Thu, Sep 16, 1999 (12:42) * 7 lines

I like .net, because it doesn't sound so corporate. I mean, yeah, you own this, and there are costs and cash flows, so there IS a biz side, but the name should rather propagate the web-culture the Spring is. This is our "Home on the Net", where the browers graze, etc.

P.S.: I'm not sure a topic like "A wants Spring.net" should be exclusiveky discussed in Inner. Thanks for dragging this out here into the sun shine.
We non-Inners see it, and when we know something is going on, but can't put the finger on it, it might upset the populace.

No, it would not be upsetting. But I can't go in to details yet.

.com names have the advantage that you type one word in the browser
window without the http://www. and the .com. That's one big reason why
I'd like to have a .com or several .com names for this community.

Ideas? Suggestions on names?

"No, it would not be upsetting. But I can't go in to details yet." - I appreciate that, as this is wheelin'-dealin' biz, and it asks for mucho discretion. I understand this. Many golden geese fly away when people discuss how to cut it up before getting their hands on one...

Still, seeing people post in a topic with the mentioned name, but general public being in the dark... Well, got me thinking what you were up to - nothing untoward, I'm sure, it's just the suspense and thrill...

Terry, I really like infospryte.com I think it could be important in the future if we do not want to keep it - all sorts of web sites are offering information - this would be a natural for it!

Wow. It is getting really hard to find the dotcoms anymore. I do whoises for fun every few months, but since the last time, it seems like hardly any I think of are still available. However, I think these might possibly be valuable soon, especially since in the next year they say 40% of all small businesses will have a web presence, so the e-commerce-type names will be hot.

It has been applied for, and, speaking of names I just got a bill for
firth.com and I also went out and spent $125 on a 9 gb. hard drive so I'll
have to fire up the pledge drive. I bet I could raise $35 from the
firthians and maybe some more for the hard drive. I just made the
quarterly $1287 payment to ddc.net for our server colocation so that's not
an issue for another 2 months.

Suggestion/idea:

Terry, take your celeb site names and put them up for auction
at ebay. Go with a minimum bid somewhere between 70 and 200
dollars and take bids for thirty days. You probably won't get
as much as you could with an active site, but you might be
able to sell them for something that way, especially now that
you have to pay for a site when you register it.

I'm sure you've been following this item, but I thought I'd post the latest from The Hollywood Reporter. IMVHO, this legislation wouldn't stand up if challenged in court. Who are they kidding? Total restraint of trade. Who are they going to go after next? Real estate developers (virtual real estate too)? puhleez! Or maybe I should legally change my name to IBM and then take them to court for exploiting MY name! ;-D

House evicting cybersquatters

(Wed., Oct. 27, 1999)

By Brooks Boliek

WASHINGTON -- Hollywood's glitterati may be able to rest a little easier because Congress approved legislation Tuesday aimed at protecting the famous from cybersquatters who register Internet domain names simply to resell them or use them for unscrupulous purposes (HR 10/26).

While the bill, approved in the House without dissent, was originally designed to protect companies with trademarks or servicemarks from cybersquatters, it was expanded to include celebrities after a concerted effort by Hollywood's creative community.

Hollywood's luminaries wanted to be included in the bill because they found their names being hijacked by people who were seeking to make a quick buck or were using them to attract business to their sites. The Internet address www.BradPitt.com contains a blatant solicitation, www.SharonStone.com directs people to a porno site, and three men reportedly attempted to sell USA Networks chief Barry Diller his domain name for $10 million. Studios also have had trouble preventing people from registering domain n
mes for their movies.

"Current law is opening the commerce-rich Internet to pirates, crippling legitimate businesses and fattening the wallets of cyber-frauds," said Rep. James Rogan, R-Calif., who co-sponsored the bill with Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Va.

Rogan said it would shore up consumer confidence in legitimate brand names and discourage fraudulent electronic commerce.

The studios, led by Disney, balked at including famous people's names in the legislation but relented under pressure from lawmakers. The studios feared that the measure would give Hollywood stars too much control over the registration of Internet domain names that they might want to use but agreed to language worked out among Rogan, Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, and Rep. Howard Berman, D-Calif.

The bill approved by the House includes language expressly forbidding the registration of "a famous personal name" as a URL if the buyer has "unfair" intentions, such as selling it for profit, using it for pornography or misleading the public by falsely suggesting celebrity endorsement. It would be up to the courts to decide what constitutes a famous name. People who have the same name as a celebrity would not be in violation for registering their name.

In August, the Senate approved a similar bill, but the Clinton administration opposed the legislation, saying courts have been friendly to the victims of cybersquatting and it would be better to allow courts to develop a body of case law in the area. The administration also expressed concern that the legislation could invite other countries to enact their own laws, leading to uncertainty and additional expense for trademark owners seeking to protect the value of their trademarks. The administration, howev
r, has not threatened to veto the legislation.

Creative community lobbyists argue that the bill is necessary. "It would protect the integrity of individual names," said Margaret Cone, a lobbyist for a coalition of entertainment figures. "Famous people's names cannot be hijacked for ransom or turned into porno sites."

Studio execs applauded the House action.

"We congratulate the sponsor of this bill," MPAA chief Jack Valenti said. "It's long overdue and we applaud its passage."
