No question, drool. And they support us with contributions too. Over
$350 in contributions from drooleurs last month alone, which paid our
whole Internet bill for a month.

apps gets the traffic from cws.internet.com which is Forrest Stroud's
Consummate Winsock Apps site. It gets a coupla million hits a day. And
he has every review he writes linked to a conference topic (close to 400
of them I think). I've never got the traffic from this source that you
would expect. It's very sporadic traffic. At one time, I thought a
commerce site could be built around this conference.

Lets hear it for the Ladies in Drool. And the occasional gentleman. We are a very special group - but not more than you are! We worry about you, too. I am delighted they are doing well by you, Terry, but I shall keep up the vigilance. We just could not do without Drool and Spring!

Perhaps as you grind that peanut gluten you could ponder why it is that I found eloquent men puzzling why Drooleurs did not frequent their site (the semi-dreary one of My Life Today.) Do the men from "down here" lurk in Drool to see what we talk about? Are we embarrassing them? Some of it gets rather um...adult in content. Nothing escapes our scrutiny! I have brought several lurkers into the ranks of posters lately. Shall the men be next? We welcome their input

We men are so low level compared to the drooleurs, with your literary slant and
eloquence. Sometimes our adulation comes down to honking at pretty girl crossing
the street. We're so hopeless when it comes to expressing our admiration. And we
just haven't been able to match your *intensity*, ya know.

Who is the femaile counterpart or equivalent of say a Colin Firth? I stutter when I
try to explain drool to folks, what should I tell them other than ordinarily
sensible women who have temporarily lost their minds over the likes of Colin Firth
and others?

Expecting something brilliant from all that pondering, wer! Terry, you are selling the men short. I have read their postings in Philosophy and in Books. They are eloquent, incisive and reflective. We need more of that in this world. As to Drooleurs, I never admit to anyone who knows me in person (including my son)where I spend endless hours. I can think of no other indivudual who has caused so much to be written both in fact and in fiction on the net. (OK, time to post all the ones I am not noticing!
I cannot explain it - but it continues to happen as a new generation of young ladies discover this most admirable of men (not counting the men reading this.) *smile*
Wolf, I'm on my way over to Babes to add my two cents worth. Thanks for telling me.

Y'all can have more conferences if you need them. You could have a
conference called firth if you wanted. There's already a bronte and and
austen conference, though they have very little traffic compared to their

i was wondering about that......actually, it's a great idea for firth since there are so many topics concerning him in drool. they could just title the conference firthing (or something) and move those topics specifically about him over there. whatcha think droolers?

i had wondered about that for collecting. barbie is big out there on the net. but i'd only want a new conference when we get those collector's to come a chat with us. (which, i'm working on)

Getting the lurkers to post is a time-consuming business. I know; I do a lot of it through individual email and have had some success. Firthing (love that term!)comes and goes with what the man is doing and whether A&E; or the BBC has just rebroadcast Pride and Prejudice. Right now, it is slow, but many regular posters are offline on holiday. Let us see what activity Fall brings.

Stumbled across this...I've long thought it would be good to change Drool as you're suggesting. It's tiresome to accidently end up on some strange topic ;-) Not that there's anything wrong with Mel Gibson, but ...and it would load quicker for newbies who don't know how to zero in on certain boards, recent messages. Waiting for that whole list (expecially the first 40 or so) of topics, well, it's not cooled anyone's ardo but if it's all the same to ya'll.

Easy for me to say, I don't have to do anything :-)

Thanks, but I meant "those" newbies. (Me in the past.) Currently I go to the actual address [blah blah blah/# of topic.# of message]. Super quick to load. And Marcia, I was looking for your Geo url. Thanks for giving it to me on a silver platter.

Since these responses came so much quicker than I imagined, I'll repeat a request I put on another topic: can anybody help me with telnet? I can get connected, but once I'm in my own subdirectory I'm clueless. I must confess I've always had a menu once I get that far. I'm eager to learn how to do it from scratch, but I can't find any instructions anywhere, and I hate to bother Terry more than is absolutely necessary. Suggestions? TIA

Thanks to help from Terry, I telnetted for the first time yesterday. Sort of like taking your first step. I was using two other telnet things, but I got the one Terry recommended somewhere. BTY the link to download there wasn't good anymore, but it was easy to find the old fashioned way (cnet download). I've been accomplishing things left and right since then: put together 2 new 1500-cd "book"cases, set up a new quadrant of my new computer, etc. I often get a boost at Spring, and you never know how or
here it'll come ;-) Long way to go to being a good telnetter, but it's fun to learn.

Quimby - or may I say, Miss Telnet?-, don't take offense. One gets used to it, and she doesn't mean ill. Some people, she even calls "William", others "Dear" or "Sweetie", or says things like "Thank you!", can you believe that!

Marcia, you can call me anything, as you well know. I'm secure in my identity, it's all the same to me. Miss Telnet? Did I win a contest? Do I get a crown? I always wanted one of those ribbon things. So handy if people forget your name.

One caveat, Alex(ander): I will deign to rule for a time only if I don't have to be on good behavior, and if you promise not to strip me of my title if, you know, pictures which look like me but couldn't possibly be me because I am a good girl, if those kinds of pictures show up. After Vanessa's experience, I've taken to turning down honors of any sort. I guess that makes me dis-honorable tee hee. BTW, over what do I rule? Of what am I a breathtaking example? Of what domain am I mistress? And why does We
get to do the acceptance speech? I don't know him; is he a potential rival for Miss Telnet? I understand he cooks but that is v. masculine, to me.

And Terry-thanks for the list of people to bug.

As close as I can tell, virtual sexuality being what it is, Wer is most assuredly all male. Uh...no. He is not a potential rival for any Miss Telnet.

I see that you miss Alexander, too. September, he promised me, he would be back because his quarterly issue would be put to bed by that time. Until then, he is all work and no Spring or email, for that matter.

I shall call you anything but your real name - there are a lot of Drooleurs who use euphemisms and whatever you wish shall be what I call you...excepting your real name...(betcha thought I didn't know!)

Hey, pop up to 72 and I can crown you with whatever you'd like that I can find on the internet. That is where Evelyn got hers and Gi and other, too.

Marcia: I was quite certain you knew, ergo some of my comments. As a Power That Bes, I know you're aware of, well, probably everything. And I have been called quite a bit ;-)

Ray: No Tony Curtis, huh? Not even a Jack Lemmon? I won't ask why you _had_ to have a f2f. I'm sure it was a v. good reason.

Marcia: I say it's women who just happen not to have much money. It's amazing what a little professional advice can do; that, and not worrying about the electricity being turned off on your seven children while you're at work for 16 hours six days a week.

Alexander: Here, male beauty is celebrated far more than female. Not that that originated here, of course.

So, William, I'm prepared to work up some sort of joint-rule thingy, Ray's opinion notwithstanding. It's much better when you have company.

Oh and Marcia, you do have some lovely crowns. Maybe one for reviewing the troops (one of my favorite hobbies) and a simple tiara for playing basketball. I'll start window shopping 72.

I'm always flexible. I wouldn't mind a triumvirate if I was (were?) the only woman, wise or not ;-) I always envied Charlotte Rampling. But then maybe you're right, lackeys may be the way to go. I've seen your taste in lackeys (or was that Gi's, the force on the beach welcoming your ship?) Let's check with William. Perhaps he's otherwise engaged (don't want a Prince C on our hands now, do we?)

Many people are better than Tony Curtis, but Tony Curtis in a dress? If you say he's ok, ok by me.

it was around the first part of this year that i had to go to Austin
on business. i only had one morning meeting, so i arranged to have
lunch with terry, then drove over to little italy to meet william.

the neat thing about all of this was that all of the locations i had
to go to were all within about 3 miles of each other! talk
about luck.

both terry and william are extremely pleasant guys. terry had me
out-geeked with two cell phones, one of which could access then
net. i was surprised at how big william was. not fat big, just
big. had i not been dieting, i would have asked about some free
pizza or spaghetti! ;)

Ray- To meet them both! It sounds nice. You'd figure they'd be pleasant. And charmingly, attractively geeky. First trip to Texas? Never been there. I grew up in the South, but of course Texas isn't the South. Somehow the idea of a Little Italy in Austin is, well, new and confusing to me. I know Boston's Little Italy and New York's Little Italy but now I have this new concept to ponder. So William is a lumberjack sort of fellow, or you're just saying that to make Marcia happy? And you don't want to be a lu
berjack sort of fellow?

Stacey- So you're close to these guys? The tiramisu--what makes it so special?

Marcia- But what about a kilt? I'm crazy about kilts. I'm always so impressed to see a guy running around in a kilt or a (what are those wrap things Michael Stipe wears?) It should come as no surprise that I actually own Braveheart, and that my vacation plans include the home of Patrick Stewart. Did anybody see him on Saturday Night Live a few years back?

Anyway, I'm glad you don't think I'd have to share my lace, and that he wouldn't dislodge his organs by wearing a whalebone corset. You don't want to rule with an idiot.

You might as well call me Cheryl, since she's gone forever. Off editing a film, I heard. I doubt if I could fill her shoes, though. Or maybe you were thinking of Cheryl Sneed?

Reminds me of something to share with the class re leaving a board:

http://www.appleinsider.com/cgi-bin/Forum4/HTML/000629.html

Pertinent exchange: killboy and karlvonl.

What would you like to be called, Marcia? I mean that won't get us in trouble with the net nannies.

Wer, yes, please elucidate. Please.

A. Sorry, sometimes when I'm tired I'm tiresome. As I learned to say in NY: fuggedaboudit. As to your question, Greece :-)

with you...or your doppleganger...?!

Cloud is in here somewhere if you read back far enough, as is all sorts of embarrassing information we wish would stay buried.

Re the kilt. when you are too poor to afford one you wrap the plaid (a piece of fabric, not a pattern) - usually tartan (the pattern) around your waist and throw the rest around your shoulders. That was what he was wearing in Braveheart, as far as I know...but you did not work on that picture?!
(oh yes, Nostromo.....!)

Call me what you will. I answer to Mom, but only from my son and his friends.
No one else calls me anything...including not calling me honey, sweetheart, love, or anything else nice. Marcia it is, I'm afraid, unless you think of something the rest did not!

From a discussion at the top of the board:

Paul Terry Walhus
We men are so low level compared to the drooleurs, with your literary slant and
eloquence. Sometimes our adulation comes down to honking at pretty girl crossing
the street. We're so hopeless when it comes to expressing our admiration. And we
just haven't been able to match your *intensity*, ya know.
Who is the femaile counterpart or equivalent of say a Colin Firth? ...

Marcia
...Terry, you are selling the men short. I have read their postings in Philosophy and in Books. They are eloquent, incisive and reflective. We need more of that in this world. As to Drooleurs, I never admit to anyone who knows me in person (including my son)where I spend endless hours....

Terry, most of us don't have a LS & E. And men can 'spress pretty good--all those writers and poets throughout the ages. 'Course they didn't have cars...

Maybe it's the person one is interested in. There may be Schwartzenegger boards somewhere, but you'd run out of things to say pretty quickly, I'd imagine. If the "love interest" isn't very interesting, well, can't make a silk purse...

But it's also the individual people in a community. If the admirers aren't very interesting themselves...'nuff said. Nevertheless, you could be an interesting fellow and still not care about a conference. If you're not interested in admiring someone verbally for fun (who is interesting and keeps re-earning your admiration), if you'd rather do your taxes than talk about someone you can't have but appreciate, then why waste time when you could be doing something you enjoy? When you could be working towar
something you can have? You can spend your time on tech boards where you share info and master something. Or you could go to the beach.

I can't speak for anybody else in Firthland, and I'm not the typical person there for various reasons. But nobody in Firthland is typical compared to the people in your everyday life, and neither is he. That's the fun. It's a pleasure to talk to cool gals under any circumstances, and here there are so many of them under one roof. It's great to add to your fantasy life with no downside; nobody here (as far as I can tell) mixes this up with reality. And I find it, um, adds to your real life. To me the whole
thing proves once again that nice guys don't finish last, if they're truly nice and not pretending or deluded. There are better looking actors and better actors and richer actors, but who cares? Who he's decided to be, and works hard at being, touches me. The whole package is worth noting, and I spend time I don't have doing so. The net lets us find people who have similar values. That's what makes for a smokin' conference.

That, and knowing the guy would be great in bed.

Alexander Greece - I guessed that... Just wanted to hear it
I thought so ;-)

Stacey or was this a convert effort to turn THIS topic in the hottest conferenece on the Spring?!
Absolutely a convert effort, heh heh.
All the Cheryl versus Cheryl vs doppelgangers is beyond me... so I throw up my hands in imagined helplessness and move on... !
So sorry, Stacey. It was quite rude of me, like speaking another language over someone else's head. Marcia and I were referring to two Cheryls who used to be at the Colinfest. One drops by less these days, only occasionally, but is loyal, as she is the keeper of some intimate article or other of Darcy's (a character Colin played.) The other was there for a few months and left, and she was quite opinionated. As to "doppelgangers", well, to me it's like weltanschauung and weltschmertz and bildungsroman and
undestag and all those other German words you'd better use right or you'll look silly. Lord knows I don't need help with that. Ask Marcia why she's going all literary on us all of a sudden. I myself fell victim to the thrill of using gang signs outside of our turf. Please accept my apologies.
'then why waste time when you could be doing something you enjoy?' comment ...hear that affirmation/reprimand/mantra from another!
Me too. It's the old "unbearable lightness of being." I'm having a great time or finally free and then I immediately clamp on the lead weights, make a slight hole in my oxygen tube, and leap into an ocean crevass. Occasionally someone knocks on my metal helmet and points up. I'm always forgetting that's an option.
Stacey the tiramisu
I was just wondering how he does that. But if you can't say, I understand.

Marcia Now I am also lost...I think it is time to find something else to do.
No! No! Now why would you do a thing like that? We can't carry on so freely in Firthland, and besides there's no guys there. Maybe a nap will make you feel better. Or a good stretch.
Can I call you sugarplum? Sometimes it just slips out. I called my one of my lawyers honey (the one I don't know so well, a woman) the other day when we won big. It's truly a term of endearment and respect.
Men here wear lavalavas ...hanging in front and in back.
I've seen pictures of these things. I envy your official duties. You definitely rule; Malo-peeking is a much better official duty than reviewing the troops. And you soldiered through in a tough situation. Bravo. I cannot renounce my crown, because I am too vain, but I'm happy to welcome you aboard. Maybe it's better just the two of us.

wer Oh, I'm a lumberjack and I'm okay..."
LOL!
I expect burly is relative, since you've been described by our man Ray as big (not runt-like). In the South and West, I'm average sized. In the North, I'm a giant. So the mystery remains.

Karen LOL!! ;-D
Karen you dog. Stop lurking and join us.
Wer: thanks for the link. Trippy. Like Stacey, I throw up my hands in imagined helplessness and move on...

Marcia Come to think of it, men in drag in general are a turn-off
I don't think the point is ever to turn us (women) on. I'm sure our William had perfectly good reasons for whatever he did and carried it out with great savoir faire. Lumberjack, burly, or runt, as long as he didn't trip over himself, and remembered to hike up his skirt to run, he could have cut a dashing figure. There's so much being written these days about men in drag...but I don't know that that adds to a discussion of hot conferences, and also Alexander will say he's not following again ;-)

Marcia, you apologize more than I do! What on earth did we do wrong? You're so much fun, whaddaya worrying about?

Marcia = Cheyenne ? Huh, das verwirrt mich jetzt aber, I must say! Anyway, Marcia, needn't be the bottled stuff - many folks substitute this nicely by using lead pipes for their drinking water...

point well taken Marcia (and again I didn't mean to hurt your feelings) but one thing I have a problem with...
you worry so much about what others think of you... especially those you feel closest to...
Why??
we all really enjoy you and your posts, have confidence in that.
those you care about, care about you 9and if you get any sense that they don't... you don't deserve that...
I know you don't want us to have to walk on eggshells around you...
please just believe that we like you and appreciate your views and thoughts and especially feelings.
and then, if at anytime you do feel wronged or angry, we can discuss it...

but i don't want our idle and ridiculous banter (and ability to laugh about silly things) to put you on edge (or us on edge either)...

so... take a deep breath of Spring air and smile...
we are amoung friends...

thanks Marcia! (for the fundraising prompting in another conference!)
EVERYBODY...
I am trying to raise $4200 for the Leukemia Society by December 1st... my great feat that I would like you ALL to sponsor is a marathon run... 26.2 miles
Most people are donating a dollar a mile -- $26.20 but I have had some WONDERFUL surprises of more (including $100 form an uncle, $100 from my boss and $100 from my boss' boss!)
ANY amount would be FAN-DAMN TASTIC as I have a long way to go...
good vibes would certainly help as well!
I have described this in detail in fitness but w/ this kind of prompting from Marcia, I'll post it around somemore!
