Welcome to the conference that serves and is linked to the
Stroud Consummate Winsock Applications site. Forrest Stroud has
reviewed close to 229 software tools and plug-ins that help
connect you to resources and information on the Internet.
How did you hear about us? What are your interests and areas of
expertise? What kinds of conversation and information are you
seeking in this conference?
This is the topic to introduce yourself. Come join us and feel
welcome to re-visit as often as you like, become a regular!

I'm Paul Terry Walhus (terry@spring.com) and I created most of the topics
in this conference. I am working on a project with NetRabbit to expand
and extend the capability available in Stoud's site. We're building a
"commerce engine" which will enable folks to purchase software that
Forrest reviews on his site. And this conferencing system will be a way
for folks to talk about the software that Forrest reviews and to get
additional informaiton about the "consummate winsock apps".
We're talking about applications that enable you to access and ulitize
the Internet in this conference. This conference is one of many that we
are building at http://www.spring.com to cover a wide range of topics
(politics, culture, entertainment, etc.) and this conference is unique in
that we are subdividing it into categories (eg. web servers, graphics
tools, etc) to make it easier to get around.
I frequent several online conferences on the Internet, my own Spring, the
WELL, ECHO and others. The Spring, which I started, is Austin, Texas
online watering hole for meeting good folks and talking about a wide
range of subjects.

you like to see, what are your favorite subjects?

I'm looking for information regarding anti virus scans. Is this the right
place, or should I be at a FAQ site.I don't know much about computers, but
I needed to get one for my business and since I been on the internet I
have found many interesting and worth while sites, but I'm worried about
picking up viruses. In a nutshell, I'm looking for help ,from a site that
is reputable, that will have patients with a person who has had no computer
experience ever.If this is not the site I should be at,would you be so kind as
as to steer me in the right direction? Thanks a lot!
ps,I'm using a HP Pavilion,w/ win95.

You've come to the right place, at least we hope this place will evolve into the kind of place you're looking for. We're still kind of fresh out of the gate and we're aiming toward a "critical mass" where we have enough folks talking to each other where we can rely on this forum to solve the kind of problems you're talking about. There is a section on anti-virus programs, both a general
discussion and discussion of specific programs.
A good place to start your search for information:

Sure you can. Just copy the url that you see in your browser location window.
That's what Forrest does from the reviews on his site. And you can hotlink to
the apps main menu with this address:
http://www.spring.com/apps/win95.html
And welcome aboard. We appreciate the link from your website. By the way,
what is *your* website address?

Wow! And I thought it couldn't get much better! So far, people
don't seem to have found this little spot on the internet map, but they
WILL!!
I am currently a computer tech and tech freak. I read most magazines
for about a year and then switch and find that the perspectives are
not just different, but that the information can be "biased" or "slanted"
to one application or another depending on whom you are reading. But
changing magazines seems to keep the views as balanced as possible.
Thanks for the opportunity to see what other people are saying
and doing with the applications, since none of us can keep up with even
a fraction of them...it's hard enough trying to keep abreast of the
hardware changes needed to keep today's (and LOTS of yesterday's!)
machines working and workable.

I was hoping to find an application to run 32 bit Netscape w/ AOL as my server.
Officially, AOL claims that it is not yet possible. An associate tells me
there is and app to trick the aol system for 32 bit usage. Can you help me?

Nobody calls me when thier computers are working :) Nice to see an area on the net where people can share info on current software apps and hardware. Will be anxious to see this site grow! Thanx

Wow! This is not what I expected. I just came over here to see if people agree or disagree with the ratings on CWSapps pages. I just changed to Win95 and
needed an MPEG player. I got Vmpeg1.7 and compared it with ActiveMovie.
How could he think that Vmpeg is better? No mention was even made of
ActiveMovie. I put them side-by-side on my screen and compared them.
ActiveMovie's sound, video, controls, and Information is MUCH better.
Am I missing something? Am I comparing apples and oranges, or what?
Thanks for letting me play on your screen, folks.

Iphone by VocalTech is a great product but... I have a problem with their registration fees. I registered 2 copies of IPhone late last year at their $69 rate. The reg fees went down to $49 a month or so later. No problem with that, it happens. When they came out with the new version 4 the registration codes for the origonal IPhone wouldn't work. Vocal Tech wants another $20 per copy to register the new version. Is this fair? It had been way less than a year since I registered the origonal. I e-mailed Voca
Tech regarding this and they didn't even have the courtesy to respond. This is why I don't register software anymore. You pay and are milked for more $ a few months later for the new improved version and more a few months later... What if Microsoft released a new version of Windows $89, and another 4 months laster and so on. They don't because the know users wouldn't put up with it. I detest having to pay to test someones software. We are saving them thousands of dollars by testing it for them. Why can't
hey be a little more loyal to their users/testers. If anyone has had a simular expierence speak up... I'd like to hear about it, and I'm sure others would as well.

It looks like David Glenn and I have something in common. I am looking for an alternative terminal emulator that will do telnet 5250. Most of the emulators I have run across will only do the VT-type emulations. Currently using Rumba Office from WallData. It provides some fairly versatile connectivity, but on a large scale, it is expensive and does not have all the functionality we need.

Uh oh, I said goodnight Billboy one too many times on EM. Well, glad you stopped by.
We need more Mac stuff here and I'll workk on getting some here, after all, this
is a town that is 40% Macs from what I hear. That's about 60,000 Macs in Austin.
What is the Mac site equivalent to Forrest Strouds site?
~billboy
Tue, Dec 3, 1996 (18:40)
#43
You're right Terry, you did. I generally just go to MacUser Software Central for shareware type stuff (http://www.zdnet.com/macuser/software/) because they seem to have most of what is out there and their reviews, though minimal, seem pretty on target). I think there might be some big Mac ftp archive at the University of Texas, now that I think about it. Truthfully, I have more software than I really know how to use competently at the moment and no money for the really hot stuff I'd like to buy and no ti
e to do any of it cuz I've gotten so sucked into this conferencing stuff. Is this an addiction that will subside with time?
~terry
Tue, Dec 3, 1996 (19:26)
#44
Not good news billboy. There's not much hope of this addication subsiding
with time. Well, at least it's a healthy addiction, one that will feed
your mind. There are worse addictions (eg. Leon Lett). If you want to see
"serious addiction" there's the "austen conference". These nice folks even
have their own addiction topic.
And better conferencing than barbecue and fried chicken, right?

Re: transmit jpeg files via e-mail
simple. If you are using Win95/3.1/NT, just download Eudora Lite (free)
from any of the winsock sites (eg www.tucows.com) and just attach
your jpegs (or any binary files) files using uuencode method.
If you are using unix shell account, use uuencode to encode the
jpegs files and attach in emails
make sure the receiver has uudecode facility

I'm here because I got tired of dealing with E-Mail directly through my IPS, who have been after me for two months to use Eudora or Pegasus. (Pegasus seemed to be the first choice of most, so that's what I'm starting to work with.) Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated.

I am an independent IPP and am always interested in the most economic and functional software for WWW development and connectivity. I try to supply my clients (mostly small businesses) with a cost effective way to obtain a workable internet presence. I am of the opinion that shareware applications are the best and most reliable way of doing this. My business is built around a shareware environment and I have obtained nearly all of my applications from CWAS. I would like to know how many others are doing s

Just found the Stroud site last week and downloaded NetTerm, Anzio Lite and CRT. We have applications for different users that require either VT100, Wyse 50 or Wyse 60 emulation. Anzio allows us to use Wyse 50 & 60 emulations but I couldn't get the correct keymapping for our specific VT100 needs. So I am using CRT and Anzio Lite. I prefer CRT, it is a very clean product and user-friendly. Is there any chance that the Vandyke company will be including Wyse 50/60 emulations into their software soon. W

o.k. I have no idea whereinth'ether Iam, but hello anyways.
Most of the conversation here seems to be of a technical nature.
I'm a new pc owner, just browsing, not looking for anything in particular, just whatever comes along. Just got my system back up after the clowns at Gateway tech support spent 8 hours yesterday trying to help me recover from some stupidity on my part.
So, I have this new pc right? So, I install First Aid 97 on it to make sure I don't catch any diseases from playing with all those other pc-s. Well First Aid starts to give me general protection fault messages and I panic and start to monkey with files I oughn't. By the time I get to the cybermedia website and find out that First Aid 97 has some sort of problem with Windows 95b and Internet Explorer or WinWord, well the rest of my system is all screwed up. So I get to spend the next 8 hours talking to
Gateway tech sup't from Houston to Oklahoma to North Dakota in accents from cowboy to Indian to Harlem. What a joy.
Oh well, think I'll go to Disney World.

How does Mr. Stroud go about selecting which programs to review? The programs that he has are rated and reviewed (although there is a lot that I disagree with), but he has fewer programs than most sites that I've seen. Therefore, I'm assuming that he is more selective, but I don't know what the criteria is.

Hello, one and all. I just decided to check you out while I wait for all of my Rufus Sewell pages to print (very old printer) and I can't seem to get on to Pemberley.com ( yea, I am one of them!) Too bad I din't find yopu guys during the Middlemarch discussions; it's one of my favourite novels and I love Rufus Sewell. (It all began when I saw him in Arcadia and I nearly died from hormonal overdose. Sigh!!!
Let's see, I know nearly nothing about Internet and anything else computer based because I've been avoiding them outside of work (at home I have a word processor, on purpose) because during my undergrad days I was a Bitnet junkie and looked much like a vampire (dead pallour, fear of the sun). So I now post from the Carnegie Library in Pittsburgh which closes at 9:00 insuring I will have a regular life even if I don't want to.

Hi All,
I'm new to this issue, but would like to comment on NetAttache Pro.
I purchased the S/W and have had great difficulty in ferreting through what I believe to be a very obtuse set of instructions. There is no stepwise guide, not even in the tutorial which, I believe, skips a number of steps. For ex.
How do you retrieve a brief after having created, saved, and then moved on to another brief? Every time I go to file open I get the message "file already opened...." If so where is it?

Haveyou ever seen the photograph of Livia and Colin bringing home a vacuum cleaner? It used to be on the FoF pages (I don't think it still there). CF looked identical to the scene in FP where Paul and Sarah are carrying there shopping. That predated FP, so I am inclined to believe that the leather jacket, at least was his. That might be why it looked well worn in. Though I am in total agreement with you about not believing every word you read in interviews!

My name is Gianandrea Terzi (jonny@galactica.it), I'm a developer/designer but by now internet apps are still my hobby.
I'm currently developing an auto-seek utility that could be able to download all of a site and let you browse it off-line. (as I say it's an hooby). What i'm askin (please), is if someone knows of some of the tricks of the MSINET.OCX control. I'm experiencing a lot of problems installing my application on some old W95 or WNT with wich it's supposed to work fine.
I hope this is the right place for asking help !

Anyway, if could help someone else, i've found the solution to (some) of the problems :
Installing Microsoft's Visual Studio Service Pack 3 helps to get rid of error messages such as 'No answer from site" or "request time out".
DO NOT INSTALL Microsoft's Visual Studio Service Pack 2 (Some of the controls will soon expire!)
But my proggy still won't work on some (very) old W95.

Is Terry still there? I just tried emailing and couldn't get through to 'terry'.
Anyway, if anyone reads this, my name's Paul and I'm new to all this. I came across this site in my search for info on VRML. I currently study web page design and one of my assignments is to present on a web topic, and I ended up with VRML (not by choice). Bloody hard to find any recent information on it and I can't find anything on the net about VRML post-1997.
Is it still around or has it been superseeded by some other application?
If anyone can tell me anything about this topic I'd be most appreciative as I'm stumped at the moment and have no idea how I'm going to fill a 45 minute presentation on a topic I have no idea about and can't get any information on (nothing recent anyway).
Thanks in advance for your help.

"Virus" Warning...
If you receive an email entitled "Badtimes," delete it immediately. Do not open it. Apparently this one is pretty nasty.
It will not only erase everything on your hard drive, but it will also delete anything on disks
within 20 feet of your computer. It demagnetizes the stripes on ALL of your credit cards.
It reprograms your ATM access code, screws up the tracking on
your VCR and uses subspace field harmonics to scratch any CD's you attempt to play.
It will re-calibrate your refrigerator's coolness settings so all your ice cream melts and your milk curdles.
It will program your phone auto dial to call only your mother-in-law's number.
This virus will mix antifreeze into your fish tank. It will leave dirty socks on the coffee
table when you are expecting company.
It will replace your shampoo with Nair and your Nair with Rogaine. It will cause you to run with scissors
and throw things in a way that is only fun until someone loses an eye. It will rewrite
your backup files, changing all your active verbs to passive tense and
incorporating undetectable misspellings which grossly change the interpretations of key sentences.
If the "Badtimes" message is opened in a
Windows95/98 environment, it will leave the toilet seat up and leave
your hair dryer plugged in dangerously close to a full bathtub. It will not only
remove the forbidden tags from your mattresses and pillows, it will also
refill your skim milk with whole milk.
WARN AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN!!

I just discovered this place through RoP. I loved the stories over there and saw the link to this one. I enjoy your stories as well. :) I doubt I'll be able to write my own but I love reading yours. Thanks

Which Application are you planning to use - or are you just introducing yourself to the entire Spring then heading for the Drool conference? Welcome, in any case, and aloha!

Sarah, don't be a stranger - I am delighted you enjoy the stuff we post which is Non Firthian. Feel free to wander around - there is a staggering array of topics and conferences, and I try to get to all of them one way or another.

Hi, I'm a virgin to chat. This is my first time ever posting any kind of a message on the net. What I was really looking for were discussion groups dealing with xDSL and Cable. Does anyone have any info??

Aloha Tom...it is good to see you posting. There are several conferences which might deal with it and you sort of have to hunt through their topic lists to see which ones deal with your question, and if all else fails, I can create a topic for you to hold forth upon. First, though, try Internet, and Web Conference
Or just post it in one of those conference's Q&A topics. Terry does know about this stuff...otherwise, be patient till he telnets in and finds your comment and responds to it!

Sure, what do you need to know about xDSL and Cable Tom? I've got cable and I just ordered DSL. They both work fine. Cable is fast and cheap but not good if you're running servers. DSL is better for serving up content, which I do.

Hey, I have ben here 4 a few minutes and I wonder if this is a safe place to be in the dark? I am the info addict and am a bit clueless to many things mentioned here. Want you all to recall that there is a war goin on 30 years now and if it is unwinnable, those who care should send out some post cards on Feb 15, 2000. My attempt at homepages sites are w.geocities.com/nawdy_seester/index.html or www.geocities.com/nawdy_seester/TREASON.html and I will be improving them. I am a BSN RN (licensed but not insti employed). Have a happy. See ya in November

Try the cultures conference. Lots about violence and war in there...and the despair it causes. I deal with war in the elemental state in Geo. Volcanoes, floods, earthqaukes and other violence of nature. Porch conference takes all discussions in various venting places. Welcome and aloha. Make yourself comfortable!

Well beathoven, you need a sound card with a good microphone and set of speakers or preferable a headset/microphone.
Which web phone service are you going to use, I recommend you visit the http://www.dialpad.com site as this seems to be the best of the lot.
Will you keep us posted of your progress?

We wuz' hacked, cracked and abused.
Big time.
This time it was malicious and it took a major reconstruction effort. I went about 24 hours without sleep at one stretch. But now we're back and we're even stronger in the way we've rebuilt the system and I'm doing multiple redundant backups. I had to buy another server a couple of days ago and a cost of about $1400 but it's a place where we can mirror our main system and get back on line quicly if we need to do so.
But it cost a lot, and I may have to stretch our pledge drive a bit more to help make up for some of these costs.
I want to make sure folks are getting the most they can get from this place and that we're giving them everything they want. And to do this, security and backups are going to play a key role from now on.

hmmmm... this thread seems to have died a sudden death?
OK folks. I'm back and I'm chatty. Surely there have been new folks join up since 2002? And since everybody has apps (from the last visable post, let me be clear. APPS not abs)lets discuss them. There's probably lots of new stuff out there that isn't currently covered.
Maybe we can even get our favorite grand poobah, Terry, to update or add app names.
Come on folks... let's get the party started!

Sure, there are lot's of new apps, and some of the apps here have gone by the by. Forrest Stroud is still reviewing apps.
For example, these apps could be new topics:
Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Thunderbird: Microsoft Alternatives Come of Age - 9/15/2004
If you're looking to explore the internet without being tied to Internet Explorer or if you yearn for a new "Outlook" on e-mail, Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Thunderbird, respectively, serve as solid alternatives with some intriguing extras. And the price is right both are available for free.
Zoom Player: A Player for Every Type of Media File? - 9/8/2004
Can you play multimedia files on your computer? Of course you can, but which of the multitude of file formats can you actually use? Zoom Player from Inmatrix claims to support the widest variety of multimedia formats, including the most recent formats, while also giving you ultimate control over your viewing and listening environment.

That's my man, Terry! Jump in here wit me! We can get jiggy with new apps...
I think I'm going to download a couple of browsers so I can test my site with them. My only concern is incompatibility. Most of my apps are MS and I know how 'twitchy' MS apps get in the presence of competitors.
Any issues I should know before I begin?
OR:
Would some of you Springers pop into my site with your diverse bunch-o-browsers and report results back via my guestbook? If you do that, you don't have to leave your 'real' name. Tell me what browser you used and sign with your Spring handle. I'm new to this web design stuff and would appreciate all helpful hints.

Hello.
I've joined here as I've noted that a whole lot of people have visited my blog from an address under spring.net. I'm curious as to why, but cannot read the pages as these are restricted.
My blog is acediscovery.blogspot.com and the post refers to Lamb's Conduit Street in London.
Any info gratefully received. Thanks.
