CommNet -- CommNet is an integrated modem dial-up and telnet client for Windows. It's one of the few telnet clients available that offer support for Zmodem transfers. Zmodem support allows files to be uploaded and downloaded from your local site while in a telnet session, effectively eliminating the need for FTP in some cases. Another cool feature is the ability to launch multiple telnet sessions and a single dial-up session concurrently with CommNet. VT100, TTY, and PC ANSI emulation types are currently supported; VT220 is not yet offered. The demonstration version on the net lacks several key features found in the commercial release ($34.95). First, the commercial version allows web browsers to use CommNet as a helper app. Also, the demo version is limited to two concurrent telnet sessions as well as having restrictions on the total number of phone book entries and downloaded files. Both versions have toolbar buttons for launching auxiliary applications, including Write, Notepad, File Manager, and a DOS session. While I like this functionality, I would also like to be able to modify the toolbar and add additional apps. Finally, CommNet offers customizable Sound Effects for users equipped with sound cards. Overall, CommNet is one of the best telnet clients I have used. I like the ability to send and receive files from within a telnet session, as well as being able to quickly launch auxiliary apps on command. For the many users still looking for the quintessential telnet client, do yourself a big favor and make sure that you check this app out. Pros: Zmodem transfer support, send/receive files in a telnet session, launch auxiliary apps Cons: Lacks VT220 support, lacks customizable toolbar, expensive relative to EWAN New: Faster Zmodem file transfers, improved VT100 emulation, remapped PC ANSI colors Version Reviewed: 2.1 Date of Review: 8/29/95
