Internet Wave -- Internet Wave is a new real-time audio on demand
application that is attempting to follow in the footsteps of
RealAudio and TrueSpeech. In its current release, however,
Internet Wave ultimately fails to impress, especially when compared
to the above two clients. IWave is slower than RealAudio and
TrueSpeech at both 14.4 Kb and 28.8 Kb connections. Its audio
quality is also slightly lower than that of TrueSpeech and
RealAudio. VocalTec does offer free encoder and server
applications for creating your own IWave files. VocalTec also
includes an evaluation release of its immensely popular Internet
Phone application with IWave. Unfortunately, Internet Wave isn't
quite on the same level as Internet Phone yet. Still, this is the initial
release for Internet Wave, and many changes and improvements are
expected which should undoubtedly help to make this a much more
competitive client.
Pros: Real-time audio on demand; free encoder and server apps
available
Cons: Performance lower than RealAudio and TrueSpeech in terms
of both speed and audio quality
New: Improved audio quality, revised interface, bug fixes
