Ladybird -- Ladybird is very similar to Post Office in function.
However, they both exhibit differing interfaces and subtle variations
in options available. Ladybird will, like Post Office, take up a
minimal amount of system resources and can call your normal mail
client upon receipt of new mail. Also like P.O., Ladybird is a small
and inexpensive program ($5 in mint stamps of your country).
Choosing Ladybird over Post Office or vice versa comes down to
deciding which interface and options you prefer.
Ladybird uses a colorful ladybug icon to represent the presence (or
lack) of mail waiting on your host system. While many users will
like this colorful and simple method, in minimized view Ladybird
will not show the number of messages waiting on the host (unlike
Post Office). Both of these programs can play a .wav file when mail
is received; however, only Post Office currently allows for
customizable icons. Ladybird also has a verbose option available
that will give more information about the amount of mail awaiting
review. Like Post Office, at $5, this is a very useful and inexpensive
application for the multitude of users who tend to always monitor
the use of their resources.
Pros: Background mail checker that uses a minimum of system
resources, nice array of options
Cons: Doesn't read mail -- it will be easier for many users to just
use their normal mail client
