Mail Explorer for Windows 95 Quick Desc: A mail client that utilizes the Windows 95 Explorer interface Location: http://www.city-net.com/~mbt/mailx124.zip Version: 1.24b Size: 794 Kb Status: Freeware Author: Michael B. Tierney Website: http://www.city-net.com/~mbt/csmail.html Mail Explorer is based on a solid premise -- utilize the features and tools already built into the Windows 95 Explorer in order to enhance sending, receiving, and organizing e-mail. By interfacing your mailing tasks with Explorer, Mail Explorer allows you to make use of Windows 95 utilities like quick find, message sorting, file compression, advanced searching, and powerful organization capabilities. The Mail Explorer client adds additional features like address book management (including a helpful auto-add feature), basic filtering (for automatically sorting new mail into designated folders), quick conversion to and from Unix Pine and Netscape Mail, Multiple Document Interface (MDI) (for viewing several messages at the same time), and background message polling and spooling. Mail Explorer has enough features to make it competitive with most second-tier mail clients, but its real downfall lies in the manner that its underlying premise is applied. If all of its features and tools were available from within the Windows Explorer (perhaps via a menu in the file bar), Mail Explorer would be more enjoyable and easier to use. Unfortunately, not all of its capabilities can be carried out within the Windows Explorer environment -- creating, sending, and checking for mail and similar critical tasks can only be performed within the Mail Explorer interface. Viewing messages, sorting messages, and managing mail folders, on the other hand, are all tasks that can only be completed by Windows Explorer. In other words, in order to satisfy all of your mailing needs, you must constantly switch back and forth between two entirely different environments. Why not use just one client that meets all of your needs -- a client like Eudora or Pegasus Mail that is not only easier to use but also offers a greater selection of features. Pros: Mail management via the Windows Explorer interface, adequate feature-set Cons: Two clients where one will suffice, the competition offers more features Version Reviewed: 1.24b Date of Review: 8/23/96 For the latest information on Mail Explorer check out http://www.stroud.com/95mail.html#mexplore apps conference Main Menu
