Conference Categories | Apps Conference | http://www.cuteftp.com rabbit@ati.net ftp://ftp.cuteftp.com/pub/cuteftp/32cftp15.exe CuteFTP -- Like John Junod's WS-FTP, CuteFTP is a stand-alone File Transfer Protocol client with a multitude of configurable options and features exceeding those of FTP clients found in web browsers and gopher clients. CuteFTP even capitalizes on m any features missing in WS-FTP. One of the best features of CuteFTP is its robust *stop* command, similar in nature to the stop button found on many web browsers. This command allows a user to stop any operation in progress while still maintaining the connection. Beyond the stop command, CuteFTP also integrates the file listing process with file descriptions obtained from the index files found at many anonymous FTP sites (extremely helpful for deciphering the cryptic file names found at many FTP sites). Caching of recently visited directories is another distinctive feature found in CuteFTP. In addition to fixing many bugs, the newer releases of CuteFTP have implemented WS-FTP's File Manageresque approach to listing both remote and local directories side-by-side, comprehensive login listings, selectable file viewers, and selectable colors, the ability to recursively download directory trees, and the ability to easily send multiple files at once. CuteFTP has made some very significant and extremely useful changes since the old 1.3 version. The most important of these are the fact that CuteFTP is now once again shareware ($30) and that both 16 and 32-bit versions are now available. Right mouse butt on functionality has been implemented extremely well in the latest betas, as well as improved drag 'n' drop functionality (for both the Site Manager and for receiving/sending files), custom commands, auto-renaming for uploads (for example, *.htm to *.html), a quick-save command for remote and local default directories, and a sleek new look to the interface. Finally, the collection of FTP sites that comes pre-installed on CuteFTP has been revamped and greatly improved -- the collection is now second to no ne relative to other FTP clients. This is an excellent app that has seen massive improvement over the last few months and should definitely be checked out by all users. Pros: Nice array of features, including caching and the stop command, cool interface Cons: The $30 price tag is about the only negative to be found in CuteFTP New: Custom commands, auto-renaming for uploads, bookmarks, improved performance, bug fixes Version Reviewed: 1.4 Final Beta 7 Date of Review: 1/11/96 Reviewer: Forrest Stroud

I've tried version 1.7 and really like the interface and ease of use. However, I do as much uploading of files as I do downloading. Cuteftp can download directory structures but cannot upload directory structures. Think I will stick with ws_ftp (free) for a while.

I'm -at least for the moment sticking with ws_ftp. Forrest doesn't agree with me on this and he rates CuteFTP at the top of the heap. I also upload a lot of directory structures.

I'm interested in knowing about FTP clients that also allow me to apply the CHMOD command to files after I've uploaded them. I often need to upload files and do CHMOD 744 FILENAME or CHMOD 755 FILENAME, so I have to switch to a telnet prompt to do it. I'm currently using WS_FTP for the same reasons (directory structure uploads), but wondering if I should switch to another if I can find one with CHMOD capability. Any ideas? My mail is tfabris@oro.net...

Following up on my previous message: Just got an email from the WS_FTP folks saying that the latest versions of WS_FTP do have CHMOD capability. This is something that IMHO should be included in Stroud's reviews of FTP clients- it's what I was looking for as I scanned the reviews.

This is a pretty important feature. Good move by WS FTP.

Presently we are using the XCOPY /D command in NT to copy new or updated files from a users chosen folder to a shared common folder on a server. This runs very slow. I've noted that transferring the same files using CuteFTP runs on average 20 times faster for us. Naturally we would like to use this method. The problem/question is twofold. 1. The XCOPY /D command only copies those files that have been changed since the last update to the server or new files. Is there a way in CuteFTP to do this w/o intensive interfacing of the user? 2. When uploading a file using CuteFTP I noticed that the servers file/date stamp was not set as the original's, rather it was the current at time of upload. Can this be changed so that the original time/date stamp remain intact? I'd prefer an email response if possible, as I am not 100% sure I can get back here! I use CuteFTP and it is excellent. Keeps logs, does all the stuff a good ftp program is supposed to do. Quick and efficient. The only thing I do not like about is if you close the program entirely, it kicks off your phone link to the entire computer. Inconvenient, so say the least. Any suggestions?
~MarciaH #8
I fixed the problem. I went into the options and unchecked the box which said disconnect from the internet on closure of program. It comes like that by default. Anyone setting it up for the first time may wish to uncheck this box. I am very happy to have discovered this little item!

Nice little tip, Marcia.

Wish I had bothered to go into the vaults of the program earlier. One of the above posts made me think of it and it worked. No matter how old the postings are, they can still prove valuable!

I took their offer of the free upgrade to CuteFTP 4.0. It is a nice little compact program, though I fail to see the advantage over the old one. If anyone else is considering the upgrade, be aware you will have to readdress your ftp sites and some of mine took some doing considering I had to hunt up the username and the password. You might want to do it some time when you have the information at hand or when you have lots of time to spend on it. At least the upgrade does not hang up your modem when you close it!

I think Forrest has unlinked us from http://cws.internet.com after about 7 years or so. Surprisingly, we never got a huge amount of activity from his conferences. So I guess we'll have to start updating this ourselves. CutFTP is a good program, fairly relentless in it's ability to transfer files. The only thing I've seen to match in this respect is Bulletproof FTP. Marcia, let's talk about Netmeeting because I've found out a few things about the 3.0 version. Meet you in the Netmeeting topic?
~MarciaH #13
Ok, I'll be right over!
~MarciaH #14
...if I can find where NetMeeting is, that is...Post something so I can find you!
~sprin5 #15
OK I'll post something in the Apps conference.
~MarciaH #16
I'll look for it
~terry #17
