So admit you have one or two. Yeah, they're cute. But do you just obsess over them and have to buy every one you see? Tell us about it. And just a disclaimer, The Spring is not affiliated with TY in anyway.

ok, i have three of the original ty teeny beanies from mcdonald's. they've still got the tags but no bags. we have the others, but the kids have played with them and none have tags anymore. i don't know how much they're worth, but i thought they were cute, which was why i kept them.

My mother has every damn single one of those buggers. In plastic, in a box.
I chide her all the time about how they'll suffocate and die before she can sell 'em.
I have a retired pig. It's the cats' favorite toy. It's a mess. Not worth the $300 it once was but...
the meow meows like it!

Some Beanie Baby collector/fan is being sued by TY for using Beaniebabies.com as her web page name. Apparently it's copyrighted up the bunghole!

I bought a Beanie Baby for my collector mother...
and while at the store (in Vegas no less) we mentioned our upcoming trip to Germany.
The lady told us if we were to bring bears back, she'd pay us $400 per bear!!!
Guess who's stuffing stuffed bears in her backpack for the trip home!?!?!?!

While I was in California, my sister-in-law made me accompany her, along with my husband and hers, to the Disney store. We were each to pick up 6 of each when they brought out the new ones for the week. She bought them all. The woman is obsessed and I think it is very weird to wait 2 hours in front of the store so you can be first in line to get them. I have one - from Denney's and it is a dog. Kinda stupid! I collect gold set with diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds. At least I won't look too
izarre when I wear them!
~aschuth
Thu, Jun 10, 1999 (08:34)
#17
You got that right! Though wearing them might also look interesting; I once saw a cape with teddy bears sewn it, looked fun - recommendable for the <18 set, perhaps...
Stacey, ever bought any of the bears when in Europe? DID or DIDN'T you look at the Steiff stuff?

yeah, i know. actually barbie was a deal because in a few years she'll be worth twice that. and 21 dollars for the kit, not too expensive to me. and all for the bear, too. which was all i really wanted.

that is, IF i can ever register as a member at the ty site. the only thing that chaps my buns right now is that i can't get clubby I. only gold members can and that membership is no longer available. should i raise a stink? i just want the teddy bear, is that too much to ask?

I would raise some sand with them. Platimun is rarer than gold, after all, and more precious. I will write you a letter of recommendation, if you'd like.
Can you get the card out of there without breaching the "original packaging?"
~wolf
Mon, Sep 6, 1999 (21:02)
#42
no, you have to break the pack, but it's nothing more than a plastic cord holding the zippers together. at this point, i don't care about the d****** packaging as long as it took for me to find the thing!
~MarciaH

It does not ruin the future value? I thought it had to be in pristine condition...but, you know all about that and I know nothing...here to be educated, as it were.
~wolf
Tue, Sep 7, 1999 (17:43)
#44
you know, marcia, i'm not sure if it'll ruin the value. but i didn't open the coin or collector's cards nor did i take the ty tag off the bear. most ty beanies are sold unpackaged and the values (from what i've seen) are based on tag condition as well as popularity of the character.
(hope you didn't take offense at how i wrote #43) i was frustrated at the industry!
~MarciaH

No offense, my dear Wolfie. Not a chance *hugs* I guess I was thinking of Barbie and how you have to keep her chaste until parting with her. Those Ty tags are so funny...they sell elaborate protectors for them, as you know. I am the sort who takes tags off everything as soon as I get them home, including labels sometimes. My family dispairs of knowing quite what is in which bottles, and on occasion, I forget, as well!

While I was at Costco checking on the Millennuim Barbie I noted a big bin of the cutest hedgehogs...I was eyeing one (in hand, actually) quite closely when O'O looked at me with "you have nothing better to spend your money one?" in his eyes. I put it back...but I can still see those big black eyes looking at me saying "take me home!" *sigh* (they were less than $10, as I recall...)

i picked up another platinum beanie club kit yesterday. the reason was because the club member's card inside's different from the first one. can actually see the card number on this one plus it's a different color. haven't heard anything about it at Ty, but will keep looking and let you all know.

oh, and while i was there, picked up pinky the flamingo and stretch the ostrich. both have since retired but much to the alpha male's chagrin, they're now part of my collection.
you see, i had prematurely expressed my uneducated opinion on beanies when i first started collecting barbies. but that was way before i found out why they're so darn collectable, they're pretty darned cute! and now the alpha male says that i should please not bring anymore into the house. *grin*

so, anyone add any new beanies to their collection? burnt out already, eh?
well, i am. the ty site for bboc members is lousy. if you forget your password, there's no way to get a hint or an email back to you. the stuff they show on the site isn't updated. there's a screensaver which i downloaded and it's nothing more than a rotating add for ty. not a bunch of beanies having fun.
if you're a platinum club member, you can't order the first clubby bear buddy at all. i did order a clubby ii buddy and now we'll see how long it takes to get here. according to the messageboard at ty, i should see them late next year if at all.
oh, i've listed my gripes on their page but nobody reads it except to make sure you didn't list a phone number or cuss word in your message.
i will say that i'd like to get "the end" bear and then i'm done.

From July on I do not buy anything for me - even stuff I need, so I can handle what I want to get other people for Christmas.(You could make a better screen-saver than that!)
I have sticky notes all over to help me remember logins and passwords to tenet sites, email, visto, IM, and all that other stuff we must have them for. Including for here - our most precious Spring.
Yikes!!! Ty could use some serious PR. Don't like being treated as a source of money and little else! Grrrrrr *snarl*

i think what's going on is ty is coming out with another set of beanies. of course, with the way pokeman is going, ty could be leaving the beanie realm altogether. it's more likely that because they're retiring all the 19-hundreds, they'll have a 2000 set. but, i'm not in the know and will have to check out a couple of places to really get some dirt.

I recall saying not so long ago elsewhere to you that I did not know what Pokeman was. Now, you cannot turn on the TV without being blasted with advertising for the movie and all sorts of spin-offs. I am sick of it already.

Ah, but are the non-Ty ones as valuable as the authentic ones?
~wolf
Tue, Nov 30, 1999 (21:01)
#72
to answer your question, marcia, rather belatedly, yes. other bean bag toys are valuable. now the counterfeit Ty beanies are NOT valuable, just a big rip-off unless you want a Ty-like beanie to quiet your child. but be warned, fake Ty beanies can be expensive since the seller is looking for a profit from the Ty name.
and, i saw "The End" beanie baby bear at a table at a local arts & crafts show for $28. since i learned a valuable lesson after buying halo for way too much, i walked right past the bear even though it's the one i'm looking for. i shall wait because, if any of you have access to a military installation's AAFES (i.e., BX, PX), you'll eventually get these guys. for example, i picked up valetina, hope, and the 1998 Ty signature bear for $4.99 ea. i'm sure the end will be there in no time.
now for some good news (for me anyway): Clubby II Beanie Buddy (avail. to BBOC members), arrived today via UPS in excellent condition, no crumpled ear tags, etc. was supposed to get collector cards with it, but am not worried because i paid for the bear and he's here! it's only been 3 weeks since i placed my order. (if you read the cyberboard at the Ty site, you'll see posts from people who are still waiting after 16 weeks)...
perhaps i'll go and try to get the bears (prob. just the new ones and whatever shows up at the BX) and then just concentrate on my barbie collection. (i need a new room added to the house *grin*)
~MarciaH

That new room added to the house is a familiar feeling to me, as well. Thanks for your complete and most interesting comments on my question. Hindsight is always 20-20, but now you can use it more profitably. Let us know of your success. And, keep scanning the shelves at your local AAFES!
Excellent news about the Bear reaching you in pristine condition. Not always a sure thing this time of year. (off for the dinner with the coach...talk later!)

some news concerning the beanies' retirement:
this was in today's local The Times newspaper.
according to The Associated Press,
Oak Brook, Illinois, Disproving skeptics who thought it was a ploy to boost sales, the maker of Beanie Babies says the end really is near: Dec. 31 will be the last day the popular stuffed critters are made.
Oak Brook-based Ty Inc. posted a cryptic announcement on its Web site Thursday, saying that production will stop Dec. 31 and warehouses will be cleared of surplus.
The company hinted at the move with a similar Web site announcement in August, saying it would "retire" all current Beanie Babies at the end of the year. Many collectors and fans thought it was a ploy to boost beanie prices and were expecting a new line of the toys.
Ty Inc. spokeswoman Anne Nickels said she had no idea why the cuddly toys were being discontinued, adding that the decision to stop production was made by the owner, Ty Warner.
One factor for the decision could be the growing interest in Pokemon cards, said Leonard Tannenbaum, president of Beanienation.com, an Internet auction site for the Beanies.
"Our Pokemon sales have flown, but Beanie sales haven't," Tannenbaum said.
End of the article.
and speaking of Pokemon, please see it's topic in this conference for an interesting article also published in today's The Times newspaper.

straight from the horses mouth at Ty
GLOBAL NEWSFLASH
I have been overwhelmed by the response to my announcement that all Beanies
will retire on December 31, 1999. Since the announcement, there have been
thousands of messages posted on websites worldwide discussing the
discontinuation of Beanie Babies. I have received hundreds of letters from
children, educators, hospitals, clinics, charities and collectors around the
world asking me to reconsider my decision and create new Beanies.
After much thought, I am willing to put the fate of Beanie Babies in your
hands. You make the decision. You have inspired the Beanie Babies line through
your devotion to them. I will kickoff the new millennium by conducting the
first live worldwide vote of its kind, a global vote to determine whether
Beanie Babies should, or should not, be continued. Our Beanie Baby factories
are shut down, but if you decide that new Beanie Babies should be created, I
will re-launch production.
As the new millennium begins, people in every country and every time zone in
the world will have an opportunity to participate in the "Beanie Babies
Ballot". The global vote will begin on 12/31/99 at 6:00 a.m. EST, USA. When you
access www.Ty.com you will be asked this question: "Should Ty create new Beanie
Babies in the year 2000?" The website will give detailed instructions on how to
cast a vote by internet or telephone at that time. On 1/2/00 at 6:00 a.m. EST,
USA, the voting will come to an end. Results will be final and binding.
We will be charging an amount of U.S. $ .50 (fifty cents) per vote (which
requires credit card validation). This charge should ensure integrity of the
vote, as well as prevent over-voting. Ty employees/vendors/licensees are not
eligible to vote. All proceeds (100%) from the vote will be donated to the
Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. Regardless of the outcome, children
of the world will benefit from your vote. Remember that it is you that can make
a difference in this world.
Happy Holidays Everyone!
Ty Warner
so now they're gonna charge us to vote! what about all the kids who don't have cc's? you should see the responses at the cyberboard at ty. they're hoppin'!

well, mr. warner responded to requests by beanie collectors to match their gift:
I have been reading your posts both here and at other sites. I have heard your
challenge to "put my money where my mouth is" by matching any funds raised from
the "Global Poll". I think that is a great idea! I will, therefore, present the
Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation with an amount that is TRIPLE the
amount raised by your voting! May the New Millennium bring each and every one
of you health and happiness!
Ty Warner
this is a great gesture, too bad he didn't think of it himself!

~wolf
Mon, Dec 27, 1999 (20:23)

well, he says he already closed down a bunch of factories. imagine putting all those people out of work before the holidays. maybe that's how he'll be able to triple the contribution. while i think raising money for pediatric aids foundation is great, it should be voluntary. when you vote (which is still free in this country) they should have an option so you can contribute an amount. this way, all collectors can have a voice (some actually don't own credit cards and they're 18+) without feeling obligate
or anything. but can't the man see that these critters are still sought after? all he has to do is sit down and read his message boards thoroughly. and a lot of people are quitting (which means more for us) because they're tired of the hoopla and being strung up.
~MarciaH

It strikes me as self-agrandizing of the worse sort - masquerading under the guise of charity and democracy. I am glad you told me about his factory closings and such callous treatment of the world in general just for his own best interests. I am more than a little disappointed in such a man, and I agree with you that charity is only permissable with the approval of the donor. Something is terribly wrong about all of that. we'll see. supposedly this little market started out because he wanted an
inexpensive toy that was safe for all ages. well, now he's just gotten greedy.
and has forgotten about all the people who have made it possible for him to
triple the amount of $.50 donations per vote in the first place. he talks about
his factories in his plea for votes. he should've had the vote before he gave
out the pink slips, duh!!
the sad thing is i think they're quitting this line of beanies and moving on to
something else beany. he had other beany brand names registered recently so it
doesn't matter if we vote or not. ty will go on but probably not as we are used
to seeing.
for me, i'll pick one up if they appeal to me and that's the only reason i pick
up anything like that anyway. isn't that the joy of collecting? not just to
grab 'em all so you can say you got the whole set! (ok, so i got the whole set
of 1999 teeny beanies at mcdonalds by buying drinks and getting four beanies at
a time. but they're not for sale. i think the teenies are cute and i especially
love the bears!)
a person sure could learn a lot about free trade and capitalism in america by
following ty!

just posted a gripe at ty's cyberboard. it's subject is to Mr. Warner and
here's the body of the text:
Your message of matching our donations is very generous, didn't you know how
much beanies mean to your collectors? We've made it possible for you to match
our 50 cent votes. Last I checked, voting is free in America, something that
has been fought and paid for. Allow us the option to donate. Many beanie
collectors are foregoing credit cards which means they can't vote. Can you
validate us by membership numbers? I am not a business woman as you can tell
by my post, but I am a consumer and a small time beanie collector. This whole
thing appears to be a ploy. To buy votes for something that will go on anyway
even if different from what we're used to seeing. Yes, collections end and new
things take they're place. But you're losing a lot of respect and trust from
consumers like me who are tired of being roped around. Thank you very much for
your time, for creating a little bean toy that's appealing to everyone.
yeah, am making a fool of myself *grin* it's not posted at the site yet because
the moderators have to make sure i'm not cussing and stuff....

ok, i read about the following rumor through the end's cyber diary at ty:
Beanieland: Who knows what the keys to the future hold?
The upcoming online poll to determine the fate of Beanie Babies isn't the only
news coming out of Beanieland. Ty Warner, the company's mystery-loving
president, tells USA TODAY in an e-mail that he has a new creation in the
works. "I wanted to come up with something that would be a total surprise. I
did, and we will launch this new product at the trade shows in January."
Absolutely no details are available, but the Ty Inc. Web site (www.ty.com) on
Tuesday did make a passing remark about "Ty TV."
Ty TV? geeze louise, like there's not enough out there already to keep our
kids' eyes glued. we'll see!@

the following was cut and pasted from the end's diary at the ty website:
I found out what Ty TV is all about! When the Global Polls open on December
31st at 6 a.m. (EST) the Ty web site will not be a web site but it will be TV!
How cool is that? It will show what's happening with the voting live! It's
going to be so cool to watch! I wonder how many people it will take to make all
this happen? I should have asked Ty that when we were talking about it. I bet
it's going to take thousands and thousands! And they will all be working very
hard until 5:59 a.m. (EST) January 2nd. That is when the polls will close and
we'll all find out whether or not there will be any more beanies. It's going to
be so exciting watching "Ty TV" during the polls!
so now we know what ty tv is all about, i guess. wonder who really does the diaries....
~wolf

well, i'm watching ty tv. i have to say that it is quite the piece of work and
really neat.
29235 folks have participated world-wide and the vote is a resounding yes, 93%
at that! like we thought it be any different. well, lemme do some math (this
could take awhile) and see what that donation is up to. well, ty only has to
donate $43852.50 which really isn't a lot considering his wealth but hey, the
thought's in the right place i hope. ($58470.00 total to the charity, which
isn't very much, considering the potential but every little bit helps, huh?)
they've got another day to do this so i'll let you know what happens. (btw: if
you go to the site, be prepared to wait).
~MarciaH

rather than clogging up their site, I shall come here to find out what is happening. I am taking off my gloves and socks so I can also help you with your math *grin* Yup! Any money is better than no money! *hugs* Wolfie! I am happy to be online even if it is telnetting.

91% voted "YES" and 9% voted "NO"
I would like to thank everyone who participated in the Beanie Babies Ballot. We
hope you have enjoyed the excitement of this event. Your vote in this "first of

does it pay for their meds and provide a place to sleep -which is good, but does
pay for research for better meds or even a cure?) lemme give you the name of the

I sure hope it does not fall into the administration's coffers. If it goes for research it will
be better than nothing but not much. If it went to give meds to those children who could not otherwise afford it, that would be the best of all. Perhaps we should investigate the foundation and see what they do offer sufferening children...

alright, i've gotten through on ty.com. the tykids isn't up yet as far as pics. you can create a tyfolio which allows you to list all the beanies you own whether babies, buddies, attic treasures, etc. it also lets you create a wish list that can be emailed to your friends and relatives and you can tally up your favorite beanies. the new look is neat so far. the tyfolio needs a username and password so make sure you write those down as there's no way to get it emailed to you that i've found.
