Another one of Springeurs is Stacey, she lives in Denver too. What does a "surveyor" do in this context. And Welcome!
~ginger Wed, May 28, 1997 (01:43) #102
Did you get in touch with Stacey, Don?
~Cassia Mon, Jun 16, 1997 (18:31) #103
Hello, one and all. I just decided to check you out while I wait for all of my Rufus Sewell pages to print (very old printer) and I can't seem to get on to Pemberley.com ( yea, I am one of them!) Too bad I din't find yopu guys during the Middlemarch discussions; it's one of my favourite novels and I love Rufus Sewell. (It all began when I saw him in Arcadia and I nearly died from hormonal overdose. Sigh!!! Let's see, I know nearly nothing about Internet and anything else computer based because I've been avoiding them outside of work (at home I have a word processor, on purpose) because during my undergrad days I was a Bitnet junkie and looked much like a vampire (dead pallour, fear of the sun). So I now post from the Carnegie Library in Pittsburgh which closes at 9:00 insuring I will have a regular life even if I don't want to.
~terry Mon, Jun 16, 1997 (19:57) #104
Can you get into the austen conference?
~ginger Sun, Jun 22, 1997 (14:53) #105
Welcome Cassia!
~frisco Wed, Jun 25, 1997 (14:36) #106
(terry)I just found out about this place today while I was putting my last posts the commons. So is this where all those folks at EMinds will wind up? I will be back after I explore this place.
~terry Wed, Jun 25, 1997 (15:06) #107
They could. It's way up in the air now. Check in to the minds conference for more details or check out http://www.minds.org which is the Spring's refugee camp for Electric Minds.
~yoda Wed, Jul 2, 1997 (08:20) #108
does anybody have where you can watch jpg pictures. because I only can look at gif pictures. I can`t look at JPG pic`s. I`ve looked every where. Does anybody knows or has this sort of program. YODA
~terry Wed, Jul 2, 1997 (11:53) #109
Lview. The old tried and true. Forrest did a great review of this product.
~stacey Mon, Sep 22, 1997 (13:02) #110
hey out there, i've been denied permission to post once or twice, what's up?
~terry Mon, Sep 22, 1997 (21:47) #111
Where were you denied? We'll make sure you won't be denied Stacey Leigh!
~stacey Tue, Sep 23, 1997 (10:59) #112
Let's see, was it food? Was I denied access to food? How could you be so cruel?
~terry Wed, Sep 24, 1997 (07:08) #113
That's going too far, I can't imagine why you would be denied access to food? I'll check in to it.
~cathy Fri, Oct 24, 1997 (10:19) #114
I am looking for an application to keep my schedule on the computer, freeware only. I thought stroud.com might have one but no. Any ideas? - Cathy
~terry Fri, Oct 24, 1997 (11:52) #115
Well Netscape has a calendar program that you can run off of a website. Exactly what type of computer setup do you have?
~KitchenManager Thu, Nov 13, 1997 (03:30) #116
Hey, I need a timer to put on some programs, specifically AOL, so that a guest at my house can only use it during certain hours. Anybody got a program, or script, batch file, etcetera, that ya can tell me about?
~Shaved24M Tue, Dec 2, 1997 (12:17) #117
Hello??
~KitchenManager Tue, Dec 2, 1997 (17:57) #118
Hello, whatcha need?
~Anton Sun, Dec 7, 1997 (13:45) #119
Hello! iS THERE ANYBODY listening to me?
~Anton Sun, Dec 7, 1997 (13:47) #120
Fuck you!
~Robbrian Tue, Dec 9, 1997 (13:35) #121
Hi All, I'm new to this issue, but would like to comment on NetAttache Pro. I purchased the S/W and have had great difficulty in ferreting through what I believe to be a very obtuse set of instructions. There is no stepwise guide, not even in the tutorial which, I believe, skips a number of steps. For ex. How do you retrieve a brief after having created, saved, and then moved on to another brief? Every time I go to file open I get the message "file already opened...." If so where is it?
~russt Tue, Jan 13, 1998 (13:20) #122
Can I get help with ICQ here
~russt Tue, Jan 13, 1998 (13:32) #123
Anyone out there?
~terry Tue, Jan 13, 1998 (22:21) #124
What kind of help do you need? Have you been to the http://www.mirabilis.com website? Details?
~werner Sun, Jan 18, 1998 (10:57) #125
Hello, everyone, and greetings from western New York. I'm a college instructor of English, but I'm off duty while on the net. Hobbies include travel, reading, movie-going, and classical music, especially opera. Is someone reading this introduction? Email welcome at werner@www.spring.com. Craig
~terry Sun, Jan 18, 1998 (15:32) #126
Welcome Craig, glad you're checking in.
~pandikar Wed, Jan 21, 1998 (13:01) #127

~terry Wed, Jan 21, 1998 (21:24) #129
I would do a re-install. And as for the missing Windows file, do you have any friends with Windows or the orginal CD?
~Fermi Thu, Jan 22, 1998 (15:49) #130
Does anyone have experience with First Aid 95 Deluxe, and if so, how would you rate it for effectiveness and ease of installation/use? Is the newer version worth nearly doubling the price (First Aid 98)
~AllisonM Sat, Jan 24, 1998 (09:56) #131
Haveyou ever seen the photograph of Livia and Colin bringing home a vacuum cleaner? It used to be on the FoF pages (I don't think it still there). CF looked identical to the scene in FP where Paul and Sarah are carrying there shopping. That predated FP, so I am inclined to believe that the leather jacket, at least was his. That might be why it looked well worn in. Though I am in total agreement with you about not believing every word you read in interviews!
~mnpMike Fri, Feb 6, 1998 (22:47) #132
Hi, I am looking for other users of TextPad . I would like to configure it for use with the Sun Java Development Kit (JDK). Does anyone discuss this type of thing around here? BTW, this is my first time here, so any general pointers on where to start would also be appreciated. Thanks, Mike
~terry Sat, Feb 7, 1998 (05:44) #133
There's a textpad topic in the apps conference. I've used textpad and it's a real decent html editor. Especially for folks with a little bit of familiarity with UNIX commands. http://www.spring.com/yapp-bin/public/read/apps/335
~mindspace Tue, Feb 10, 1998 (19:17) #134

What's the LYCEUM? Curious. And welcome aboard!
~AllisonM Fri, Feb 20, 1998 (13:35) #136
There is a photograph in today's Evening Standard magazine of CF and Livia at the London premiere of "As Good As It Gets". He looks cute and happy! She looks happy - so she ought.
~Vicious Fri, Mar 13, 1998 (04:46) #137
My name is Gianandrea Terzi (jonny@galactica.it), I'm a developer/designer but by now internet apps are still my hobby. I'm currently developing an auto-seek utility that could be able to download all of a site and let you browse it off-line. (as I say it's an hooby). What i'm askin (please), is if someone knows of some of the tricks of the MSINET.OCX control. I'm experiencing a lot of problems installing my application on some old W95 or WNT with wich it's supposed to work fine. I hope this is the right place for asking help ! Thanks As sonn as the pages are ready, you'll be able to download the app at: Http://www.geocities.com/ResearchTriangle/Lab/4841
~terry Fri, Mar 13, 1998 (14:02) #138
That's awesome, Gianandrea. We hope you get to be a regular here and we can give you some feedback on how this works. Have you talked to Forrest Stroud, our boy in College Station, about this?
~DALE Fri, Mar 13, 1998 (15:28) #139
I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THERE IS ANY WAY TO SET THE LINE WRAP FOR INCOMING MAIL! I HAVE A NETWORK AND PEGUSAS MAIL IS OUR MAIL SYSTEM BUT THERE ARE OTHER USERS IN OUR SYSTEM THAT USE GROUPWISE, WHEN THEY SEND OUTGOING MAIL THE LINE WRAP EXTENDS PAST THE SCEEEN SIZE AND WE ARE NOT ABLE TO READ THE ENTIRE MESSAGE.
~Vicious Mon, Mar 16, 1998 (06:19) #140
Thanks! I'm going to send him an E-mail. Anyway, if could help someone else, i've found the solution to (some) of the problems : Installing Microsoft's Visual Studio Service Pack 3 helps to get rid of error messages such as 'No answer from site" or "request time out". DO NOT INSTALL Microsoft's Visual Studio Service Pack 2 (Some of the controls will soon expire!) But my proggy still won't work on some (very) old W95. Bye!
~Tah Wed, Mar 18, 1998 (19:36) #141

~winter Thu, Mar 19, 1998 (23:39) #142
welcome salla! welcome darcy! hope to have you come here often. have either of you seen "photogrpahing fairies'? it hasn't been released in the States (don't know if it ever will be), and I'm dying to know about his performance. BTW, I finally DID see the camomile lawn, and ... my, my.... toby certainly was a bit 'chunky' back then! but of course, gives us something to grab onto, doesn't it?! lucky jennifer ehle... I wonder what was the cause of that break-up.
~KitchenManager Sun, Mar 22, 1998 (10:17) #143
Intriguing...which .dll's are needed to fully decode that last post?
~Vicious Mon, Mar 23, 1998 (11:09) #144

Hi everyone!! I am new to this virtual community. I go to the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa and I am taking a American Values class and everyone is to research a virtual community. I stumbled upon the Spring and I am enjoying the topics and the people so far. I am interested in movies, any kind of music, photography, the outdoors, cooking, TV, anything. I look forward to talking with everyone. Any information on this website for my class would be helpful or direct me in the direction, or I c uld ask a specific person the questions, whatever. Thanks for letting me visit and I will be back! =)
~KitchenManager Wed, Apr 1, 1998 (16:42) #146
Hope your research goes well, and you stay around after your class...
~terry Thu, Apr 2, 1998 (17:41) #147
I think we have all these things and fire away with your questions!

I am a musician/songwriter with my own home analog studio. I am looking for tools that will allow me to record from my sterio out(4track) to the line in on my computer. I would also like to mix and manipulate the sound in the digital domain.
~terry Sat, Jan 9, 1999 (21:24) #156
Welcome! You need to meet Bob, nagy@mail.utexas.edu. Drop him a line about your interests and mention me.

~Moon Tue, Jun 8, 1999 (13:56) #161
You have built up MD's character nicely Laura, it looks like a lead role to me. :-)
~Moon Tue, Jun 8, 1999 (14:25) #162
Huh? How did this get here? Sorry Terry!
~aschuth Tue, Jun 8, 1999 (16:17) #163

~MarciaH Sat, Aug 28, 1999 (15:30) #166
Shall refrain from introducing myself, but is there really more to life thank Drool? Not on weekends, there isn't. That is why I am telnetting and making comments where I have never been before.
~aschuth Mon, Sep 27, 1999 (18:21) #167
"Boldly venture where no Marcia has ever gone before...!"
~MarciaH Wed, Sep 29, 1999 (19:28) #168
this is true, but I find good friends in these remote places. This is the best part of telnetting.
~terry Wed, Sep 29, 1999 (20:37) #169
I can't understand why this conference is so quiet with all the links on Forrest Strouds million hits a day site! This conference should get much more traffic. Maybe Forrests links are buried too deep. Back to watching Sex in the City.
~MarciaH Wed, Sep 29, 1999 (20:59) #170
"Back to watching Sex in the City." Lucky you!!! Could it be that when there is a problem they go to other topics such as porch's New User Helpline or one of the Ask the Experts topics? Apps is full of goodies I use regularly and would be happy to assist with learning about for a new user. Other than that...I cannot figure why you do not get more traffic...because I get email about stuff like this!
~MarciaH Wed, Sep 29, 1999 (21:00) #171
...oh...I thought you were having Sex in the City...sorry!
~terry Wed, Sep 29, 1999 (22:57) #172
No, just watching. But I should be having while watching. Back to apps in the city.
~MarciaH Wed, Sep 29, 1999 (23:20) #173
*sigh* I understand...!
~MarciaH Fri, Dec 17, 1999 (23:32) #174
You're right Terry...everyone has gone on Hiatus and that island is gonna sink if they do not come back!!! Sorry no one answered that lady's question on Eudora lite. I have used Eudora for ages and am very familiar with it and love it.
~Schooner Thu, Mar 23, 2000 (00:22) #175
Is Terry still there? I just tried emailing and couldn't get through to 'terry'. Anyway, if anyone reads this, my name's Paul and I'm new to all this. I came across this site in my search for info on VRML. I currently study web page design and one of my assignments is to present on a web topic, and I ended up with VRML (not by choice). Bloody hard to find any recent information on it and I can't find anything on the net about VRML post-1997. Is it still around or has it been superseeded by some other application? If anyone can tell me anything about this topic I'd be most appreciative as I'm stumped at the moment and have no idea how I'm going to fill a 45 minute presentation on a topic I have no idea about and can't get any information on (nothing recent anyway). Thanks in advance for your help. And my email address is paul_brewin@hotmail.com Paul
~MarciaH Thu, Mar 23, 2000 (12:53) #176
You're in the right place, but I am not the right person to answer your quesions. Help is nearby, though. Welcome!
~MarciaH Thu, Mar 23, 2000 (12:56) #177
Yup, Paul, Terry is around - and he reads if he does not answer right away. Others do too... hang in there. Aloha
~sprin5 Thu, Mar 23, 2000 (16:16) #178
I'm still here. My email's working. But it's no longer terry@spring.com it's terry@spring.net.
~MarciaH Thu, Mar 23, 2000 (17:55) #179
Thanks for theupdate on the email - I was wondering if that one still worked - rather, worked again! ('Twas incredible talking to you today - finally! I am so happy you succeeded.)
~aschuth Thu, Mar 30, 2000 (13:25) #180
Welcome, Paul!
~MarciaH Thu, Apr 20, 2000 (14:48) #181
"Virus" Warning... If you receive an email entitled "Badtimes," delete it immediately. Do not open it. Apparently this one is pretty nasty. It will not only erase everything on your hard drive, but it will also delete anything on disks within 20 feet of your computer. It demagnetizes the stripes on ALL of your credit cards. It reprograms your ATM access code, screws up the tracking on your VCR and uses subspace field harmonics to scratch any CD's you attempt to play. It will re-calibrate your refrigerator's coolness settings so all your ice cream melts and your milk curdles. It will program your phone auto dial to call only your mother-in-law's number. This virus will mix antifreeze into your fish tank. It will leave dirty socks on the coffee table when you are expecting company. It will replace your shampoo with Nair and your Nair with Rogaine. It will cause you to run with scissors and throw things in a way that is only fun until someone loses an eye. It will rewrite your backup files, changing all your active verbs to passive tense and incorporating undetectable misspellings which grossly change the interpretations of key sentences. If the "Badtimes" message is opened in a Windows95/98 environment, it will leave the toilet seat up and leave your hair dryer plugged in dangerously close to a full bathtub. It will not only remove the forbidden tags from your mattresses and pillows, it will also refill your skim milk with whole milk. WARN AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN!!
~sprin5 Fri, Apr 21, 2000 (00:08) #182
Hey, I live near the University of Texas, will it cripple all their computers and cause the Texas Tower to collapse?
~MarciaH Fri, Apr 21, 2000 (19:48) #183
Prob'ly...keep us posted!
~MarciaH Fri, Apr 21, 2000 (19:49) #184
Then we can post it in "Stupid things in the News" Just don't get in the way. We could not do without you!
~sarah19 Fri, May 19, 2000 (01:39) #185
Hi, I just discovered this place through RoP. I loved the stories over there and saw the link to this one. I enjoy your stories as well. :) I doubt I'll be able to write my own but I love reading yours. Thanks
~MarciaH Fri, May 19, 2000 (12:54) #186
Which Application are you planning to use - or are you just introducing yourself to the entire Spring then heading for the Drool conference? Welcome, in any case, and aloha!
~MarciaH Fri, May 19, 2000 (13:00) #187
Sarah, don't be a stranger - I am delighted you enjoy the stuff we post which is Non Firthian. Feel free to wander around - there is a staggering array of topics and conferences, and I try to get to all of them one way or another.
~pterson Sun, May 28, 2000 (15:55) #188
Hi, I'm a virgin to chat. This is my first time ever posting any kind of a message on the net. What I was really looking for were discussion groups dealing with xDSL and Cable. Does anyone have any info??
~MarciaH Sun, May 28, 2000 (16:15) #189
Aloha Tom...it is good to see you posting. There are several conferences which might deal with it and you sort of have to hunt through their topic lists to see which ones deal with your question, and if all else fails, I can create a topic for you to hold forth upon. First, though, try Internet, and Web Conference Or just post it in one of those conference's Q&A topics. Terry does know about this stuff...otherwise, be patient till he telnets in and finds your comment and responds to it!
~sprin5 Sun, May 28, 2000 (16:16) #190
Sure, what do you need to know about xDSL and Cable Tom? I've got cable and I just ordered DSL. They both work fine. Cable is fast and cheap but not good if you're running servers. DSL is better for serving up content, which I do.
~MarciaH Sun, May 28, 2000 (16:18) #191
(See?! Ask and ye shall receive!)
~octavia Thu, Aug 10, 2000 (05:02) #192
I joined up cause ther was a cool convo going on with Jane Austen/Pride and Prejudice/Colin Firth/Jennifer Ehle, I am wondering how I can get there?
~octavia Thu, Aug 10, 2000 (05:02) #193
~MarciaH Thu, Aug 10, 2000 (13:44) #194
aoctavia, use this URL http://www.spring.net/yapp-bin/restricted/browse/drool/all/
~warfairy Sun, Sep 24, 2000 (21:24) #195
Hey, I have ben here 4 a few minutes and I wonder if this is a safe place to be in the dark? I am the info addict and am a bit clueless to many things mentioned here. Want you all to recall that there is a war goin on 30 years now and if it is unwinnable, those who care should send out some post cards on Feb 15, 2000. My attempt at homepages sites are w.geocities.com/nawdy_seester/index.html or www.geocities.com/nawdy_seester/TREASON.html and I will be improving them. I am a BSN RN (licensed but not insti employed). Have a happy. See ya in November
~MarciaH Mon, Sep 25, 2000 (00:10) #196
Try the cultures conference. Lots about violence and war in there...and the despair it causes. I deal with war in the elemental state in Geo. Volcanoes, floods, earthqaukes and other violence of nature. Porch conference takes all discussions in various venting places. Welcome and aloha. Make yourself comfortable!

Well beathoven, you need a sound card with a good microphone and set of speakers or preferable a headset/microphone. Which web phone service are you going to use, I recommend you visit the http://www.dialpad.com site as this seems to be the best of the lot. Will you keep us posted of your progress? (sending email reminder to beathoven hertz)
~beathoven Tue, Jan 16, 2001 (10:02) #200
