This section of The CWS
Apps List reviews four different types of apps, each with quite a bit
in common -- they can all be obtained as standalone packages or as
integrated clients in gopher apps and web browsers. File Transfer
Protocol (FTP) clients are the most popular method for obtaining
files over the Internet. Literally thousands of anonymous FTP sites
have been set up to allow the public to download and try out files.
In fact, almost every application on The CWS
Apps List can be found on an anonymous FTP site. While web
browsers have become more popular as of late for FTPing files
(most have an integrated FTP client), standalone FTP clients retain
more functionality and features than those found in web browsers.
So, for the serious file-grabbing netizen, a standalone FTP client
may be the better application for downloading files compared to
those found in web browsers. Archie clients are search engines
designed to locate a specified file contained on an anonymous FTP
site. The archie client connects to an archie server, which checks all
the FTP sites in its database for the specified file. Archie makes the
task of finding a specific file on the net much easier. However,
many gopher clients and web browsers can access archie servers,
which reduces the need for a standalone client. Finger and Whois
clients both tap into their respective servers in order to obtain
information about a certain individual or group with an account on
a given computer. These queries also often allow you to find out if
the individual or a member of the group is currently on the 'net.
Again, both of these apps can be obtained as standalone clients but
are more often used as an integrated client of a gopher app or web
browser. The following are brief descriptions of each application
featured on the File Transfer Protocol / Archie / Finger Page.
