The Last Big American Car

From the '50s to the early '80s, the Big American Car was fairly well defined: it had a separate frame to which a body was attached, it had a big engine (usually a V-8) at the front and a big differential at the back to send power to the rear wheels. Then came two energy crises, and suddenly imports that were smaller, unitized, and increasingly front-wheel-drive became all the rage. The edict was out: V-8s waste gas! Unitized chassis save weight! Ban the driveshaft! And so, in twos and threes, the Big American Car has all but died out. There is only one company still making Big American Cars: the Ford Motor Company. They make three models, but they are all based on basically the same components; the "short" wheelbase chassis supports the Ford Crown Victoria and teh Mercury Grand Marquis, while the long wheelbase chassis supports the Lincoln Town Car. The Grand Marquis, in my opinion, is more appealing than the plainer Ford and the more expensive (and uglier) Lincoln. It is also the car that defines Mercury now that the Contour/Mystique-based Cougar is destined for the chopping block. The Ford Motor Company plans to offer a high-performance Grand Marquis with blacked-out trim called the Marauder. While I would actually want a Marauder, this move scares me, because the offering of special editions of models normally indicates that the model is about to die. Precedents: Chevrolet Impala SS, brought out a year or two before the Caprice & Roadmaster were dicontinued. 35th Anniversary Camaro this year, the year the Camaro dies. If I had a choice between seeing the Marauder come out now and having the Grand Marquis still around when I have enough money to buy one, I'd prefer the latter... 2 new of

It gets a high rating on http://www.carreview.com/PRD_241_1531crx.aspx 4.48 of 5 I like this review by Zach: Reviewed by: Zach Model/Year: 89 Grand Marquis Price Paid: $0 at guys house Summary: I am 19. I am a huge mustang fan. My dad bought me this car so i would not speed and get into trouble. Let me tell you with a few mods this thing will beat the pants off most mustangs. Strengths: POWER and room for everything else. SUBS GIRLS. Tt is a tight car to deck out. The tires will fry right off when you change the chip, fuel injectors, and fuel pump. The COBRA intake fits it too. SO will any part that fits a 302 V8 mustang. TALK about power. I have done 153 mph in this car. I also did some suspinsion work. Poly urathane bushings, KYB gas shocks. Now i can take 30 mph corners at 65!!!! The next thing on my list a a Power Dine super charger. It is tight to have a grand ma car that will spank LT1''s around Weaknesses: Gas after doing the monds. It sucks down the fluids Similar Products Used: Mustang GT, LT1 camaroe

Why I'm interested: Tradition, comfort & ROOM!!! Better looking than Crown Vic AND Town Car, less expensive than Town Car. Why I'm not that interested: SUCKS GAS (relative to a small car or motorcycle). It won't replace a 1983 Mercedes-Benz 300TD (white with red leather seats) from the top of my wish list, but...
