Welcome to the collecting conference! please introduce yourselves here.
~ratthing Mon, Jan 4, 1999 (10:21) #1
the thing i really like to collect are sliderules. i have about 15 of them in various stages of newness.
~wolf Mon, Jan 4, 1999 (10:56) #2
i collect a bunch of things like fishing frogs, barbies, dolphin stuff, and harmony boxes.
~stacey Mon, Jan 4, 1999 (11:36) #3
i like to collect STUFF, just STUFF maybe it's not collecting... maybe it's just 'keeping' ... either way, it takes up tons of space in those little Rough Totes I bought to organize everything in!
~wolf Mon, Jan 4, 1999 (12:35) #4
haha!!
~ratthing Mon, Jan 4, 1999 (12:37) #5
this conf has given me a majorly geeky idea. i need to put up a page on my web site that has all of my sliderules on it!
~wolf Mon, Jan 4, 1999 (13:08) #6
do, showcase your collection. you never know, ray, how many other sliderule freaks are out there! (maybe you should post a pic here so i'll know what you're talking about *grin*)
~ratthing Mon, Jan 4, 1999 (13:56) #7
you dont know what a sliderule is? oh god, i feel *sooo* old!!!
~wolf Mon, Jan 4, 1999 (15:23) #8
i have an idea (just not been around too many sliderules).....
~ratthing Mon, Jan 4, 1999 (15:37) #9
well, looks like i need to create my web site so you can see some!!
~wolf Mon, Jan 4, 1999 (15:54) #10
yep!
~KitchenManager Thu, Feb 7, 2036 (00:32) #11
Hey, Stace, we collect the same things! I'll show you mine if...
~KitchenManager Thu, Feb 7, 2036 (03:51) #12
...you promise to give me an honest appraisal!
~stacey Thu, Feb 7, 2036 (00:37) #13
*chuckle* only if you promise not to get depressed when you see how much better my collection is!.
~KitchenManager Thu, Feb 7, 2036 (03:10) #14
hmmm... so it's down to who goes first in "I'll show you mine if you show me yours" hmmm...
~stacey Thu, Feb 7, 2036 (03:19) #15
you'd better go first, otherwise you'd be too embarassed to go after me
~KitchenManager Wed, Jan 6, 1999 (12:51) #16
don't want to shoot for the simultaneous thing?
~stacey Wed, Jan 6, 1999 (19:31) #17
ahhh... if we're playing that game... I wanna go first (and second!)
~wer Wed, Jan 6, 1999 (21:25) #18
proceed
~Dumper Mon, Feb 15, 1999 (20:53) #19
Ray, have you seen the round, yes totally round, cylindrical, sliderule that is on display at the Antique Mall next to the Airport Convention Center on Broadway? It is a fascinating thing to see, although I think it would be hard to use because it is so large. Do you use your sliderules? Younger people collect, but often don't know how to use sliderules. My dad was a master with a sliderule but even with his tutoring, sliderules never appealed to me. Rose Lynn
~wolf Mon, Feb 15, 1999 (21:16) #20
welcome rose lynn!
~KitchenManager Mon, Feb 15, 1999 (21:30) #21
Thanks for checking this conference out, too, Rose Lynn!
~aschuth Fri, Feb 26, 1999 (12:52) #22
Ray, there are some really famous slide-rules that used to be widely distributed here in Germany; the design of some supposedly derives from some superb mathematicians of the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt (now Technische Universitt Darmstadt). They were manufactured - among other makes - by Faber Castell in Mainz or Wiesbaden, I think. A certain quantity had been discovered after ages just one or two years ago and sold via the Manufactum catalog of fine things. Interested?
~KitchenManager Fri, Feb 26, 1999 (23:09) #23
he's probably drooling already...
~aschuth Thu, Mar 4, 1999 (13:49) #24
Well, not enough; didn't say a thing yet, did he?
~stacey Thu, Mar 4, 1999 (13:58) #25
perhaps you've left him speechless...
~aschuth Thu, Mar 4, 1999 (14:03) #26
Now it's my time to *grin*.
~stacey Thu, Mar 4, 1999 (14:04) #27
hey!!! lookit those teeth!!
~aschuth Thu, Mar 4, 1999 (14:07) #28

~stacey Thu, Mar 4, 1999 (14:08) #29

~aschuth Thu, Mar 4, 1999 (14:09) #30
Uh, dat hain't teetz, datz toezes!
~stacey Thu, Mar 4, 1999 (14:11) #31
well git to it with the toothbrush under those toenails then!
~KitchenManager Thu, Mar 4, 1999 (14:35) #32
yep...
~aschuth Fri, Mar 5, 1999 (07:06) #33
Stacey, thanks for the valuable tip - I did just what you said, and see: I can nearly write like a normal person again! There's no way to tell!!
~stacey Fri, Mar 5, 1999 (15:21) #34
woo woo!
~aschuth Sat, Mar 6, 1999 (14:47) #35
Hey, but what happened to you - is "woo" your word of the day, or did you run out of letters, and some w's and o's were the last ones left?
~KitchenManager Sun, Mar 7, 1999 (00:35) #36
that would be correct, yes...
~aschuth Mon, Mar 8, 1999 (13:07) #37
Well, if Kitchen is right - then just have some of mine, Stacey! As editor, I get quadruple rations of letters every month, and since we only publish quarterly (more at www.spring.net/yapp-bin/restricted/read/music/59.5 ), I got enough left to share! They are unused and premiere quality, just the stuff you'd use for real good articles and the like, even some elegant stuff. Sturdy enough to last through printing, too, - you'll like them. What letters do you need?
~stacey Mon, Mar 8, 1999 (14:47) #38
thanks Alexander, for the offer but WER's affirmative response was actually in answer to the "word of the day" suggestion. Truth be known, it's actually been the word of the past few years! Woo Woo! It's like Stacey's excitemetn verbalized!
~aschuth Mon, Mar 8, 1999 (16:27) #39
So, I got everything wrong again, eh? Still, I'd like to give away some of my surplus letters (see it as my generosity, uh, letterized): qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr ttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp    lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk As you see, I've done a lot of things with numbers, as I've used them up by now. And maybe you can't use the ,  and , but maybe you can use it to decorate your office or something. ;=}
~stacey Mon, Mar 8, 1999 (17:41) #40
thank you thank you!!
~terry Fri, Apr 9, 1999 (12:05) #41
Hey, I'm just now joining this conference 'cause I want to start a topic on 3d photography and video cams.
~KitchenManager Fri, Apr 9, 1999 (23:41) #42
go for it, Boss!
~aschuth Mon, Apr 12, 1999 (12:03) #43
Welcome Terry! You might want to take a look at the film topic here, too. Are you a general photography buff?
~terry Mon, Apr 12, 1999 (14:44) #44
Mostly video, but I have this 3d camera I'd like to play around with some.
~aschuth Tue, Apr 13, 1999 (11:03) #45
Oh, what coincidence! See what I found laying around: http://www.spring.net/yapp-bin/restricted/read/collecting/31 . Enjoy!
~aschuth Mon, May 10, 1999 (04:42) #46
(Looks like Terry never got to toying around with his camera. What a pity! I'd love to hear more about it, if it's one of those stereoscopic things, or a holografic camera or what...)
~terry Tue, May 11, 1999 (08:42) #47
I loaned it to my builder, Les, out in Cedar Creek, to take some 3d pix around the place out there. Maybe he'll show me how to use it this weekend. I want to take some pictures of the spring on my property and some of the creeks.
~aschuth Tue, May 11, 1999 (08:52) #48
Anyway, you got your topic in this conf.
~terry Tue, May 11, 1999 (15:30) #49
It will pick up!
~wolf Tue, May 11, 1999 (15:43) #50
well it better! *grin*
~wolf Tue, May 11, 1999 (15:44) #51
oh oh, i'm #50!! love them zeros...
~MarciaH Sun, Jul 25, 1999 (00:52) #52
I am here - I'll think of something to get this rolling again...Um...what do you want in the way of in intro that everyone does not know about me already?
~wolf Sun, Jul 25, 1999 (10:38) #53
you could clue everybody in on what you like to collect :)
~KitchenManager Sun, Jul 25, 1999 (14:33) #54
other than Holy Firthian Relics and rocks, of course...
~MarciaH Sun, Jul 25, 1999 (14:36) #55
...and admit before God and everybody that i am a packrat at heart, and I am loathe to give up anything once I find it necessary to my life?! Rocks (all identified and marked as to where found and when) sea shells (all catalogued and identified) books (but the bugs eat them here) and lots of stuff....
~MarciaH Sun, Jul 25, 1999 (14:40) #56
oh yes, thanks for reminding me... Things Firthian Interesting people Maps Instruments of all sorts (usually related to meteorology Radios
~aschuth Sun, Jul 25, 1999 (15:31) #57
Like transistor FM radios or amateur radio? Talk to Terry - ever been to the Radio conference?
~aschuth Sun, Jul 25, 1999 (15:40) #58
Instruments and (working) machines are cool! Got some nice Super8- and slide-projectors (a Rollei w/ carousell magazine and a vintage Leitz), a magnetic tape echo/reverb machine (loop of magnet tape runs around 5 magnet heads, weird effects & sounds), right - the 16mm projector a friend gave me... No 16mm camera, though. A half dozen Super8-cameras (Rollei, 2 Bauer, Kodak,...), all but two working. Foto cameras! Mainly russian makes fron the fleamarket (all with M42 screw mount - great lenses available for little money), a Rollei 35B I have with me early always I leave the house (sometimes I take a Lomo instead). I even have a Wow and Flutter meter! I'll try and see, perhaps I can rig it to the Spring. Old technology is fun. Looks curious, and does amazing things.
~MarciaH Sun, Jul 25, 1999 (16:27) #59
Radios: Scanners from tunable through crystal through programmable (have 3 working hand-held and someone stole my base station. Short wave receivers - 5 plus my Dad's HRO which I parted with last year to a amateur radio man who could fix what needed to be fixed and take proper care of it.
~aschuth Sun, Jul 25, 1999 (16:38) #60
Stroll over to Radio!
~aschuth Sun, Jul 25, 1999 (16:39) #61
What is a HRO?
~MarciaH Sun, Jul 25, 1999 (16:43) #62
Oh, yes...cameras: I have a pre WW2 Certo Werke "Dolly" with an F2 lens which is so superior to any others...*sigh
~aschuth Sun, Jul 25, 1999 (16:52) #63
The Rollei 35B is the best I have - 100% mechanical, metal case, very compact - fits in the breast pocket of a jeans jacket. But the Super8-cameras... That's technology! Great mechanical feats, especially the later Bauer, which has functions to dream of...
~aschuth Sun, Jul 25, 1999 (17:00) #64
And! The Rollei 35B was a gift, too...
~MarciaH Sun, Jul 25, 1999 (18:07) #65
You have a very nice collection there. Germany has consistently produced the lenses in the world and their cameras' precision is a work of art. My CW Camera and the HRO were my father's. The HRO in its day was the best all-band receiver in the world. As such it was used throughout the world in airplanes and on the ground as well as at sea. I believe it was made in Japan by what is now known as National Panasonic (it has been a while, so I am sure to be corrected if I erred.) The interesting part of this receiver was that each band was a drawer-shaped item (each fairly heavy) which slid into a wide slot at the bottom of the chassis and plugged in when seated properly. A large knurled k ob was used for tuning what was then considered very precisely in those days.
~stacey Mon, Jul 26, 1999 (11:55) #66
back to the maps... Marcia, perhaps you could point me in the right direction? I am looking for a large (about 20 square feet) map of Pangea... preferably done on rice paper... any ideas on where I should look?
~MarciaH Mon, Jul 26, 1999 (12:04) #67
Stacey, you're on - let me check my sources. I will get back with you!
~stacey Mon, Jul 26, 1999 (12:34) #68
Woo Woo!
~MarciaH Mon, Jul 26, 1999 (17:49) #69
I wish I could have summoned one out of thin air, but the size you wanted I don't think you want as a computer printout. Sorry if I disappointed - will go back and hunt some more if you'd like! (I responded by email)
~stacey Tue, Jul 27, 1999 (09:57) #70
the sights were great! ummm... sites, I guess... I didn't find what I was looking for but I wandered around in there for awhile and found things I didn't know I was interested in! Thank you! The reason I'm interested in a map of such size and historical significance... we just 'finished' the downstairs guest room and want to have a travel theme... the books are all travel books/language books and I want to decorate with nice maps. I like the look and texture of old maps done on rice paper... I know Pangea will probably not be easy to find in such a format but I'll keep searching. Anyway... I enjoyed the historical maps of a bunch of different continents yesterday... thanks again!
~MarciaH Wed, Aug 11, 1999 (20:18) #71
I did an altavista search for "where can I find large wall maps?" They have a lot of selections of current stuff...I should have put in "antique" or "old" in there. I always wanted a room with an Orrery in the ceiling and huge globe in the floor and large celestial maps and antique maps for the walls...oh well, another life time, perhaps. But here are a few places you can make inquiries: http://www.mapshop.com/wallmaps/Custom-wall-maps.htm http://www.galaxymaps.com/Default.htm http://users.netmatters.co.uk/clsgraphics/maps.htmlhttp://users.netmatters.co.uk/clsgraphics/maps.html The second one seems to have all sorts of map options...and more!
~aschuth Thu, Aug 12, 1999 (04:58) #72
I have some from late 40ies - South America, Africa (before there was Isreal, etc.) Eastern hemisphere/Asia. Used to hang them in my flat... Where are they now?
~wolf Thu, Aug 12, 1999 (15:12) #73
maps are cool! (especially now that i know how to read them *grin*)
~MarciaH Thu, Aug 12, 1999 (17:40) #74
Maps are definitly happening, and I cannot travel without them (yup, studied Cartography, too). But the neatest ones I have listed up there are more for decoration for Stacey's guest room than planning your next voyage, I think!
~terry Thu, Aug 12, 1999 (21:37) #75
Definitely chalk me up as a map lover. I have a problem dealing with their storage and mounting though. I took cartography at U of I. I loved that course. My real love is topo maps. And 3d aerial photos. They're awesome!
~MarciaH Thu, Aug 12, 1999 (21:42) #76
Those 3-D aerials with the special glasses? Awesome indeed. When my son took that class in the pursuit of his Geology degree, I got to see some really neat stuff. I love the topo stuff, too, except when I have to do the lines...I hated that...mostly because I erased holes through the first one I did.
~MarciaH Thu, Aug 12, 1999 (21:44) #77
(we probably should have posted these comments in the newly-created Collecting/Maps topic...)
~MarciaH Fri, Aug 13, 1999 (12:42) #78
For further discussions of maps please see http://www.spring.net/yapp-bin/restricted/read/collecting/42
~KitchenManager Fri, Aug 13, 1999 (13:27) #79
and don't forget that there is an underutilized cartography topic in Geo...
~MarciaH Fri, Aug 13, 1999 (13:36) #80
Thank you for mentioning it...please contribute, cartography fans: http://www.spring.net/yapp-bin/restricted/read/Geo/5
~LauraMM Tue, Dec 28, 1999 (12:09) #81
Can we start a topic of Porcelain Dolls or Madame Alexander-type dolls, my 9 year old daughter is collecting them and has quite a collection. I collect teapots;)
~wolf Tue, Dec 28, 1999 (14:58) #82
of course! and i'll start one for teapots (my co-worker does as well).
~aschuth Fri, Mar 24, 2000 (04:48) #83
Hmh, I wonder if we could use a topic on Hi-Fi gear, or maybe a whole AudioPhiles Conference, like e.g. the Radio one. That's different from the Music Conf - as this guy once said to me "Now you got the software, lemme get you fixed onto the hardware, too!" There's not a lot serious audio geeks want to talk about more than their high end amps 'n' stuff. Comments, please.
~MarciaH Fri, Mar 24, 2000 (12:02) #84
I think it is a terrific idea. However, we need someone with the time and know-how to do create the conference for us - just as Wolf and I have been waiting since before Christmas for a Crafts conference.
~terry Fri, May 4, 2001 (00:16) #85
Alexander, I hope he gets this conference going, "hi fi" or "audio" ?
~terry Wed, Oct 3, 2001 (10:16) #86
Wow, Ray I like the color scheme here, did you do that?
~MarciaH Thu, Oct 4, 2001 (01:19) #87
Wolfie did it. Made the buttons and bars and everything!!! About a year ago or more, actually...
~terry Thu, Oct 4, 2001 (10:11) #88
Wow, wolfie did that. I use telnet so much I don't see a lot of these things!
~MarciaH Wed, Jul 10, 2002 (21:22) #89
Wolfie also furnished my buttons. I removed the frames (made them transparent) and installed them on Geo. Wolfie also did the SpringArk page out of whole cloth. She is really a talented lady with too little spare time!
