Yukon Meteor Blast Thursday's Classroom for June 1, 2000 On January 18, 2000, a "small" 200 metric ton asteroid streaked across the skies of western Canada and exploded in the atmosphere. Now, scientists have recovered fragments of the space rock and discovered that they are members of a rare class of meteorites possibly containing amino acids and other organic compounds. In this week's episode of Thursday's Classroom, students can learn more about the Yukon meteor by attending a "Cosmic BBQ," calculating "Fractions of a Meteorite" and more. Divining Water on Mars: Part I Thursday's Classroom for June 22, 2000 At a NASA press conference on June 22, 2000, scientists revealed indirect but "compelling" evidence that liquid water exists near the surface of Mars and sometimes flows down gullies similar to ones formed by flash floods on Earth. Thursday's Classroom for July 20, 2000 Divining Water on Mars (Part 2) http://www.thursdaysclassroom.com Last month, many experts expressed surprise when scientists unveiled new evidence for water flowing on Mars. The Red Planet is extraordinarily cold and dry. Water there is expected to be in the form of a solid or a vapor. Liquid water ought to be very rare. In this episode of Thursday's Classroom students can explore the reasons why it's so hard to maintain water on Mars in liquid form. Lessons and activities include: o A Martian Cookbook -- modify an Earth recipe to bake cake in the rarefied martian atmosphere o Whatsa Matta You?! -- explore the three states of matter with examples from the human body o Mars Geography Concentration -- play cards and learn the strange names of important places on Mars and more! This week's episode also introduces a new feature: The Thursday's Classroom Coloring Book. Younger students can color original art by Duane Hilton as they follow the articles and activities. A Comet Comes Apart Thursday's Classroom for August 3, 2000 http://www.thursdaysclassroom.com Late last month stargazers were eagerly anticipating the arrival of Comet LINEAR, which was expected to become the first naked-eye comet in three years. But the comet surprised observers by blowing apart as it passed near to the Sun. Even now, astronomers are watching intently as Comet LINEAR dissolves into a haze of gas and dust. This week's episode of Thursday's Classroom features stories for kids and educational lesson plans about comets and Comet LINEAR. Activities include: * Comet Cones -- Kids who sample one of these delicious treats will never forget the "dirty snowball" model for comets. * Really Big Numbers -- How many zeros are in Comet LINEAR's distance from Earth? Kids find out in this lesson about scientific notation. * The Comet Coloring Book -- Students can color original art by Duane Hilton as they follow along with this week's lessons. ...and more! Catch a Falling Star this weekend Thursday's Classroom for August 10, 2000 http://www.thursdaysclassroom.com On Saturday morning, August 12th, early-rising stargazers can enjoy the sight of an unusually colorful Moon as it sinks below the southwestern horizon. You have to be awake at 3:30 a.m. to see the sight, but it may be worth it. That's because after the Moon sets the sky will sparkle with a brief but beautiful Perseid meteor shower. This week's episode of Thursday's Classroom features stories for kids and educational lesson plans about meteors and the coming Perseid meteor shower. Activities include: * Falling Star French Toast -- This activity will motivate kids to wake up early for the meteor display! * Meteor Estimation Graphing -- Students can try their hand at guessing how many meteors per hour might be seen during this year's Perseid meteor shower. * Sky Orienteering -- This simple lesson introduces kids to the cardinal directions around their house so they'll know how to find the Perseids radiant. * The Meteor Coloring Book -- Students can color original art by Duane Hilton as they follow along with this week's lessons. ...and more! Divining Water on Mars, Part 3 Thursday's Classroom for August 24, 2000 http://www.thursdaysclassroom.com Earlier this year, scientists revealed pictures of Mars that seem to show gullies carved by flooding water in the recent past. Many experts were amazed because Mars is such an unlikely place to find liquid water. The planet is colder than Antarctica and far drier than any place on Earth. If humans visit Mars they will likely need water to grow food, to drink, and as a source of oxygen and hydrogen for rocket fuel. Native microbial life on Mars -- if it exists -- probably also needs water. The hunt for precious water on Mars will shift into high gear in 2003 when NASA sends two rovers to explore the surface of the Red Planet. This week's episode of Thursday's Classroom features stories for kids and educational lesson plans about the history of Mars exploration and the upcoming rover missions. Activities include: o The First Words from Mars -- students discuss Neil Armstrong's famous words when he first set foot on the Moon and develop a phrase that might be worthy of the first person on Mars. o It's About Time -- This timely math lesson invites kids to work with dates and time intervals relevant to the history of Mars exploration. o Martian History Quiz Show -- This zero-preparation activity is a great way for kids to review facts the history of Mars exploration. o The Red Planet Coloring Book -- Students can color original art by Duane Hilton as they follow along with this week's lessons. ...and more! Watch Out for Space Rocks! Thursday's Classroom for September 6, 2000 http://www.thursdaysclassroom.com Last Friday, a small asteroid zoomed past Earth barely 12 times farther from our planet than the Moon. There was no danger of a collision, but astronomers are keeping a close eye on the space rock and many others like it. This episode of Thursday's Classroom features stories for kids and educational lesson plans about Near-Earth asteroids and NASA's efforts to discover and track them. Activities include: o Alphabet Soup for Rocket Scientists -- If NEA 2000 QW7 passes 0.03 AU from NASA HQ, should we worry? Students find out in this lesson about acronyms and abbreviations. o Oh Fudge, it's an Asteroid! -- Asteroids may look like "flying potatoes," but modeling their shapes is a lot more fun if you use fudge. o Asteroid Angles -- This middle school and high school level math exercise helps students decide whether it's better to blow up an Earth-threatening asteroid, or just to nudge it a bit. o The Near-Earth Asteroid Coloring Book -- Students can color original art by Duane Hilton as they follow along with this week's lessons. ...and more! Far-out Chores on the International Space Station Have you ever wondered what life would be like in space? The movies make it seem glamorous and exciting, and it often is. Nevertheless, someone up there has to clean house and cook dinner! This episode of Thursday's Classroom shows how doing chores at home can be good astronaut training. Activities include "Captain Trash," "Space Mess," "Nano Nap: A Space Snooze," and the Space Chores Coloring Book. Happy Birthday, Galileo! Thursday's Classroom for Feb. 8, 2001 http://www.thursdaysclassroom.com Galileo's 437th birthday is just around the corner. In celebration of the free-thinking scientist, students can nibble on the "Edible Leaning Tower of Pisa" (after calculating how much a tall stack of cookies can safely lean!), take the "Galileo Astronomy Tour" from their own back yard and, of course, create birthday (or Valentine) cards with a cool-science theme. This episode also contains Spanish-language content. For more information please visit Thursday's Classroom.

Thursday's Classroom for April 1, 2001 http://www.thursdaysclassroom.com April Fools Day is a good time to ponder practical jokes and hoaxes -- and to beware of them! One gag that's going around now is "The Moon Hoax." A group of conspiracy theorists are claiming NASA astronauts never went to the Moon. The Apollo program, they say, was filmed in Hollywood or Area 51. But don't let them fool you or your students -- the Moon landings were real. In this episode of Thursday's Classroom, students can learn more about hoaxes and how to spot them. Activities include "April Fool's Number Tricks Day" (a math exercise that will delight kids), "Hoax Happens" (kids create their own hoaxes supported by an amusing satire about the voyages of Columbus), "Hoax Cuisine!" (perhaps the first-ever edible hoax), and much more. Visit http://www.ThursdaysClassroom.com for details.

This article and following list of links at the url at the end was good enough to post twice so parents might catch it: An Annotated Checklist for Fossil Collecting by Erich Rose erich@esinter.com Having the right tools and supplies for the collecting of fossils can make the difference between a meaningless bag full of half busted rocks and a well documented and productive collection of beautiful and valuable specimens. I have been collecting fossils since I was eight years old. I started with one of my dad's hammers and a small cold chisel. I carried the fossils in empty Band-Aid cans and threw the lot into a used boy scout back pack. Since then I have refined my equipment with an emphasis on light weight and maximum versatility. Almost all of my collecting has been for invertebrates and this list reflects that bias. The items needed to collect the smaller Paleozoic or Mesozoic invertebrates common to most of us is what this list will emphasize. If you will be collecting vertebrate material other than teeth or bone fragments then you will need both a different set of tools and skills. There are special techniques and procedures needed to record, excavate and preserve skeletons. These include marking off a site and recording positions of fossils in relation to each other, painstaking careful exposure of specimens, plaster jacketing and equipment for removal of heavy loads. If this is what you hope to do then consult one of the excellent books on the subject including several listed below. for the links to the rest of the story: http://www.iwaynet.net/~mperona/chlist.htm

******************** PROJECT STARSHINE ******************** http://www.azinet.com/starshine/ This satellite was put into orbit just for kids. Please look at the above page and the links. Participate! The Starshine 3 spacecraft is a hollow aluminum sphere, nearly a meter in diameter (37 inches), that weighs 90 kilograms (197 pounds). The solar cells mentioned above power a radio communication system built by Cynetics Corporation and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. The system's transmitter will send out a beacon signal every one to two minutes at a frequency of 145.825 Megahertz to amateur radio operators, or "hams," all over the world. The hams will relay the output of the solar cells to us, so we can determine how the spin rate of the satellite slows down during the mission. Eddy currents in the alumuminum shell, generated by the satellite's passage through the earth's magnetic field, will brake the satellite's spin at a rate that is hard to calculate, so we'll measure that spin rate throughout the mission. This information will be used in the design of a spin-up and re-spin system for the Starshine 4 and 5 satellites. more ... you can see pictures and find out how to help do real space things from where you live. This is a very exciting experiment and adults are participating too!

But, first you have to build a magnetometer... using 4-inch piece of plastic straw 2 straight pins masking tape sewing thread magnet more... http://www.windows.ucar.edu/cgi-bin/tour.cgi?link=/teacher_resources/magnetometer_edu.html&frp=/windows3.html&cd=false&fr=f&sw=false&art=ok&edu=mid&cdp=/windows3.html I know there are home-schooling moms out there who cannot bake cookies and know everything about space and science, too. I thought this might be helpful. I'm going to see if I can adapt it to detect changes in manetic properties of the volcano as it erupts. I wonder how big the straw would have to be...

The excitement is certainly mounting here.
~MarciaH Thu, Nov 8, 2001 (19:40) #159
Loads of people are excited about this Meteor Shower. I'm just hoping the weather permits me to see a few.

Weather here in Austin is iffy, should be partial cloudy day.
~MarciaH Fri, Nov 9, 2001 (18:27) #161
I've got my fingers crossed. Happily, it is not until the night of the 17-18 November. Today is very overcast in Hilo. I'm hoping for better weather next weekend! Cathy Hall has done the following "introduction" to the Leonids for beginners. Thank you, Cathy! Folks, you can find this introduction on the Web at: http://www.meteorobs.org/chall.html

It was overcast and foggy in Pittsburgh last night. Rats.
~MarciaH Tue, Nov 20, 2001 (13:53) #163
In Hilo, the volcano fumes were so thick I though it was overcast until sunrise. Frustration! Ah well, I will get to have dinner on Thankgiving overlooking the summit caldera of Kilauea. An eruption would be a nice touch! I heard the Meteor Shower was great and will be be as good for 36 years. By then, I should have become one of them.

Marcia, you a shooting star? How are you planning to do that?
~MarciaH Tue, Nov 27, 2001 (21:08) #165
Are we not all star-stuff? Cosmic recycling appeals to me. One day the sun will cease to exist as will the earth. I am taking a very long view on this prospect of becoming a shooting star. Don't look for me to balze across your night sky for many millions of years. I like the idea, though.
