Semantics are as big a part of philosophy in this here conference as anything else is, so start defining your terms that we may better communicate to one another the meaning behind our words.

Please, no offense is intended by this topic. I just see it as a necessity, possibly for me most of all. In fact, I had to look these two up today. Acumen: Quickness and accuracy of judgement; keeness of insight. Redoubtable: 1) Arousing fear or awe; formidable. 2) Worthy of respect or honor.

Ah ha! the 'standards' part is where we get all mucked up! Who sets 'em and why? Morals (in that definition) certainly vary between cultures but do you believe in a universal code of ethics (to govern tose morals)?

(at the risk of being beheaded) i think hemingway may've had it right (for once) when he said something about what's right being what one "feels good after", wrong what one "feels bad after"... (morality being the most personal of issues, i think)...

but what if you have no conscience... does that make you immoral, ammoral, or simply lacking in morals...hmmm...

Wish there was such a thing as a reality pill that one could take to keep one focused.
~KitchenManager Sat, Aug 22, 1998 (12:40) #11

~riette Sat, Aug 22, 1998 (12:47) #12
Oh, nothing more than the usual self-resentment etc. etc. etc. When I hate myself, I can't be creative, and I can't concentrating on the things that are more important than my stupid ugly self. A big bore, nothing else.
