With Dan Rather hanging up his microphone at CBS Evening News, searches on the controversial anchor surged 117%. Searches on "CBS News" also jumped 24% in the wake of Rather's sign-off. Queries on the Eye Network stalwart skew older, matching the core audience who still rely on television news for a daily update. Coverage of his departure has focused on the decline in importance of network news and the rise of alternative media for information, painting Rather as a mainstream-media dinosaur of sorts. The other two network anchors -- Brian Williams and Peter Jennings -- have minimal buzz, and the only spike in Jennings' searches lately followed a hard-hitting prime-time news special on UFOs. Rather's early departure from his venerated desk is largely credited to the blogosphere and its takedown of slipshod reporting by Rather and some cohorts in a 60 Minutes 2 piece on President Bush. Blogs contributing to what became known as the oh-so-tiresome "Rathergate" continue to draw search interest -- including Little Green Footballs, Instapundit, and Power Line. Further evidence of the lack of reverence for the anchor chairs is clearly visible when the Drudge Report outstrips searches on CBS News by about a four-to-one margin. DEVELOPING, indeed... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Biz School Buzz Wednesday March 09, 2005 6:00PM PT Harvard Grads With a audacious hacker posting a method of uncovering admissions decisions at Harvard Business School and other institutions, honesty has become more than a virtue -- it's become part of the admissions standards. Harvard B-School administrators nixed the admissions of 119 students who they say breached ethics by hacking into the school's web site. Always a popular choice, Harvard Business School has seen its searches skyrocket since its announcement. While its decision is the most publicized, Harvard is not the first school to take draconian measures. It's just following in the footsteps of Carnegie Mellon's business school. Other business schools, including Stanford and Duke, whose online applications were also handled by ApplyYourself (and manhandled by curious applicants) are pondering their next step. While the search popularity of the other biz schools involved saw few spikes, ApplyYourself surged in search and shows no sign of slowing. If you've been given the business school boot by Harvard or Carnegie Mellon, take heart. With several U.K. business schools in this search top 10, there may be hope of success (and admittance) by an institution across the pond.

The "Days of Our Lives" actor was arrested Monday at the Des Moines International Airport about 6 a.m. Monday on charges of public intoxication and drug paraphernalia. He was in Des Moines over the weekend for the 31st annual Variety Club telethon. "Jason appeared to be intoxicated, showing signs as bloodshot watery eyes, argumentative behavior, inability to follow instructions and smelled strongly of an alcoholic beverage," a police report said. Stan Reynolds, volunteer producer of the telethon, said he bailed Cook out of jail. "I'm just sick to my stomach over this. I just love this young man. This is his fourth year coming here to help us, and he just works his tail off for the kids," Reynolds said. The telethon raised $3.5 million for children's charities

Today's buzz is podcasting. See my website at http://austinblogger.com/wordpress/ for my latest podcast, it's the new radio. Well, in deference, to Mike it's not radio but it's a way you can hear what I say over the net. Hey, if you get within 10 miles of me, it's radio then. OK Mike?
