Best appetizers.
~KitchenManager Fri, Oct 31, 1997 (01:04) #1
I can't tell for sure, but are we enjoying the appetizers now, stacey, or are we already in the middle of the main course? The other answer to this topic is Eastside Cafe's Southwestern Caponata. WER
~KitchenManager Fri, Oct 31, 1997 (01:05) #2
Sorry, back in the middle again... WER
~stacey Fri, Oct 31, 1997 (10:02) #3
No need to be sorry, I don't mind sharing the middle sometimes...
~KitchenManager Tue, Nov 4, 1997 (23:20) #4

Attention: Be careful with the back button. It does strange things sometimes. WER

~KitchenManager Wed, Nov 12, 1997 (15:00) #15
Chronicle readers say: Louie's 106 has the best appetizers.
~terry Wed, Nov 12, 1997 (15:01) #16
But it's too smoky there.
~KitchenManager Wed, Nov 12, 1997 (16:09) #17
Runners-up: Z'Tejas Grill, Romeo's Honorable Mention: Hula Hut, Al Capone's, Manuel's, Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen, Trudy's
~terry Thu, Nov 13, 1997 (09:46) #18
The Hula Hut is a kick, did you ever go there Stacey?
~stacey Thu, Nov 13, 1997 (10:10) #19
Oh yes! Happy hour central!
~terry Thu, Nov 13, 1997 (10:47) #20
The Dallas Night Club has a good dollar buffet starting at 5 pm every night. It's a street persons dream come true.
~stacey Thu, Nov 13, 1997 (13:01) #21
Is that a C&W joint? I think I have vague recollections of radio spots from them.
~terry Thu, Nov 13, 1997 (15:12) #22
yes c&w all the way, right out of a John Travolta movie.
~stacey Fri, Nov 14, 1997 (09:56) #23
huh??? John Travolta? Oh! Nevermind. I remember. duh.
~terry Sun, Nov 16, 1997 (22:30) #24
What was that movie called? They had a scene at Gilly's in Hoston.
~KitchenManager Thu, Nov 20, 1997 (14:30) #25
Urban Cowboy?
~terry Thu, Nov 20, 1997 (15:14) #26
Yup.
~KitchenManager Wed, Dec 10, 1997 (00:47) #27
And the critic's picks were: Manuel's Canpechana and Crab Nachos Cafe Josie's Seared Yellowfin Tuna with wasabi-ginger tamarind & passion fruit sauce.
~stacey Wed, Dec 10, 1997 (09:45) #28
Damn! All those sound good at 7:30 in the morning even!
~KitchenManager Sat, May 9, 1998 (11:07) #29
what's appetizing to everyone these days?
~stacey Mon, May 11, 1998 (14:03) #30
don't go there!!! (to vague... too much room for me to go 'off topic') The BEST calamari I've ever had... Fresh Fish Company off of Hampden in Aurora Colorado. Not little skimpy pieces... large , thick, meaty pieces, tangy breading and amazing curry dipping sauce!
~KitchenManager Mon, May 11, 1998 (22:28) #31
since when did you start staying on topic? you sure are telling me a lot of places that I can't go these days, yet not once have you told me where I can go...
~stacey Tue, May 12, 1998 (22:25) #32
wanna catch a sore throat, larangitis, fever and/or chills?!?!
~KitchenManager Tue, May 12, 1998 (23:15) #33
are you offering?!?!?
~stacey Thu, May 14, 1998 (16:55) #34
Actually I've been told of some 'homeopathic' remedies for sore throats that you just may appreciate!
~KitchenManager Thu, May 14, 1998 (21:02) #35
really? do enlighten as I'm not sure where you're going with this one...
~stacey Fri, May 15, 1998 (17:14) #36
oh the old semen/sore throat remedy... you know.
~KitchenManager Fri, May 15, 1998 (23:18) #37
didn't know that worked... thought it was just a one-sided joke/hope...
~autumn Sun, May 17, 1998 (22:59) #38
yeah, guys love to perpetuate that one! How about semen as a moisturizer?
~stacey Mon, May 18, 1998 (17:20) #39
same sodium content as sea water anyway!
~KitchenManager Tue, May 19, 1998 (23:57) #40
not moisturizer, it's an astringent...
~KitchenManager Wed, May 20, 1998 (19:22) #41
anyway, why are the three of us discussing semen in the appetizers conference? (other than, maybe, response #39 is the chief quality I look for in an appetizer)
~stacey Thu, May 21, 1998 (08:58) #42
apologies, apologies, apologies... I obviously was thinking of the wrong kind of meal.
~KitchenManager Thu, May 21, 1998 (10:33) #43
didn't say anything about it being wrong, I was just curious...you know me
~KitchenManager Tue, Dec 15, 1998 (18:59) #44
So, how do figs in balsamic vinegar sound?
~PT Tue, Dec 15, 1998 (19:57) #45
Figs in balsamic vinegar sounds really good. Where is it served?
~KitchenManager Tue, Dec 15, 1998 (22:05) #46
nowhere that I know of...just contemplating another possible menu addition...wanted some feedback on the theory before I run the practical experiment...
~PT Wed, Dec 16, 1998 (15:35) #47
Try it. It sounds really good.
~KitchenManager Wed, Dec 16, 1998 (18:27) #48
in the process of...
~PT Thu, Dec 17, 1998 (13:08) #49
How soon?
~KitchenManager Thu, Dec 17, 1998 (23:57) #50
Thinking about running them for special for the next couple of weeks, starting on Monday...
~PT Fri, Dec 18, 1998 (12:38) #51
Let me know if you do I'll definitely come by to try that.
~sprin5 Sat, May 20, 2000 (15:19) #52
test
~MarciaH Sat, May 20, 2000 (20:41) #53
Wonder how they tasted...
~sprin5 Sat, May 20, 2000 (21:24) #54
The envelope please. Z'Tejas Grill Ararat, Hulas Hut and Saba Blue Water Cafe runners up. Hon mention to Louies 106 Gilligans and Mars. I'd have to say that Bahama Breeze is conspicuously absent, this place has *great* appetizers. Not to mention outrageous magueritas and food and a wonderful island atmosphere. Z Tejas is fine, if you've got time to wait a couple of hours. It's hot, hot, hot among the trendy crowd that hangs down around West Sixth, me excepted of course.
~sprin5 Sat, May 20, 2000 (21:33) #55
I've been to Ararat and Hulas Hut, these are ok choices. But I didn't have any appetizers. Ararat has belly dancing and exotic music, and you can sit withing inches of the floor, indian style.
~MarciaH Sat, May 20, 2000 (23:06) #56
I noticed you liked the Hula Hut back a few years ago. All I can picture is plastic banana plants, paper crinkled flower leis and umbrellas in the drinks along with monkeys on cargo nets along the walls. Oh yes, we have them too - in the touristy places, but Hawaii is not quite like that - no monkeys and the plants are real.
~sprin5 Sun, May 21, 2000 (08:15) #57
Hula Hut is down on Town Lake, on a dock, and it's enscounced among bookstores and trendy gift shops. Kind of a waterfront mini-mall. It's a great place for a wedding. Wow! I just remembered the last time I was there was for Melissa Petrek's wedding, she wrote the awesome article in XL about the Spring years back and was a very, very active and entertaining poster in GenX and other topics. Then she met the guy from Marfa, got married and hasn't been heard from since. Wow! Hmmm! Mafia I know. Marfa is new to me. Sounds interesting - glad it is on the water, at least. No Banana trees? Bamboo? Monkeys? One of the appetizers back a few years at the beginning of this topic, William mentioned one which sounded very local Hawaiian and is very good here. We call them 'pupus' and it is pronounced just like you were afraid it might be *smile* Ours are sufficient for my dinner usually - then they call them "heavy pupus"
~sprin5 Mon, May 22, 2000 (03:31) #59
I still say Bahama Breeze has the best appetizers in town. In my very limited repetoir of restaurants, it stands up there. I found this place by having a friend poke at the yellow pages with eyes shut. It's a very "islandy" atmosphere and decor. A bit too trendy, but fun. Pupus. Be afraid?
~MarciaH Mon, May 22, 2000 (13:03) #60
Nothing to fear from Pupus - either heavy or light - and such an assortment of ethnic goodies are represented. Lots of KimChee, picked Japan-style veggies, cheeses plus local style meats and veggie combos and luau stuff. Like I said, it more resembles a buffet table than appetizers. no room when you have had your fill at the pupu table. Lately, Pot stickers are a big favorite, and I love them!
