I have a HP Pavilion 266Mhz operating Win 95vB with a HP keyboard. There are 3 keys in line with the F-keys that do not seem to operate. Can anyone tell me any thing about them. They are labeled: 1.Print Screen/SysRq,2.Scroll Lock, and 3. Pause/Break with the slash in this question representing a straight line between the words. I have only tried to use the Screen Print. Just pressing Screen Print - nothing, tried Ctrl-Screen Print - nothing, tried Shift-Screen Print - nothing. I want to be able to
ave something on my screen and print only what I see (which we could do in Dos). So far I have been unsuccessful in my attempts. Any help is appreciated.

hi rose! those keys are somewhat antiquated. they were used fairly
heavily in the old DOS days, but don't do too much anymore in this day
of GUIs and mouses.
however, the Screen Print key does do something pretty cool: it allows
you to capture "screen shots" or snapshots of your screen.
to do this, just hit the Screen Print key (nothing will happen). then,
open up the Paint program (most likely under Start -> Programs ->
Accessories. in the Paint program, pull down the Edit menu, then
select "Paste." Voila! you will have an image of your screen
captured in your Paint program. you can then save this as a new file
or print it out.
this feature is very useful when you are writing instructions on how to
do something in Windows, or when you want to show someone some weire
error dialog box.
have fun!

Ray, thanks a million. I tried it (printed your directions for future reference) and it worked great. Now I can print things without a zillion pieces of wasted paper. Well, not quite wasted, it all goes back to the Express-News! Now another question (which I should have read about). What are all those F keys doing these days. I know F8 well and I have discovered F5 when I am in safe mode. What do the others do (we used to program all of them).
Really appreciate all the help, hope some others discover this site soon.

no prob, rose. the F keys are pretty much wide open. in Windows 98,
they serve a lot of different functions, most of which are documented
in the online help with Win98 and all of the other programs you might
use. i am not much of an F key person, but perhaps someone else
will be along here that can tell us how they like to use the F keys!

Well, I hope someone else has questions soon - hate to feel like the only one. Have HP 266MHZ, operating Win95B, just 1 yr. old. Needed to replace virus detection software and chose McAfee since it was the OEM choice. Got McAfee Office as it seemed like the best buy for my money. Installed according to their suggested order: a)Virusscan; b)UnInstaller; c)First Aid 98 and d) Nuts & bolts 98. Re-booted after every installation. Everything seemed to work fine except everything slowed down to a snail's
pace and I lost all my games (only FreeCell and Solitaire are important to me). Tried to uninstall Nuts and Bolts and crashed. Most of it is gone but the crash occurred before all was removed and the rest won't remove now, but my speed is back. Other than going back to my HP recovery disk and starting from scratch again, is there any way I can recover FreeCell and Solitaire?

wow! what a mess!
the loss of your games may just be due to having the shortcuts to those
games messed up. check your C:\WINDOWS directory for two files,
FREECELL.EXE and SOL.EXE.
the best way to find these two files is to use the find function. Go
the Start button, then go to Find, then go to Files or Folders. Enter
FREECELL to search for the FREECELL.EXE program.
if it turns up on the search results, move your mouse pointer on top
of the icon fro FREECELL.EXE in the search results window. Hold down
your right mouse button and drag the icon out to your desktop. let go of the
right mouse button. a little menu will appear. left click on
"Create shortcut(s) here" VIOLA! you will have created a shortcut
on your desktop to the Freecell program!!
do the same for SOL.EXE
if you do a search and neither FREECELL.EXE or SOL.EXE are on your system,
then you will have to restore your system from with WIn95 CD
good luck!

Well, Ray, it looks like I am still the only one asking questions. Of course, this like my other questions is a real mountain. I received a lot of pictures via e-mail of great neices/nephews. Don't want these on my hard drive but do want to save them. I can save on diskette (ultimately will put them on LS120) but then can not open the pictures on my computer. They were all sent as .jpg but Picture It won't open them. What can I do to put them on a disk so that I can then open them? RLS

hi rose! that is odd that you cannot open the pix on diskette. are the
pix *definitely* on the diskette? you might want to use Windows
Explorer to view the contents of the diskette to make sure that the
files are there.

Good News! With Joe Gentry's guidance and with a photo program, I have, that came with Sierra Print Artist, I was able to open the pictures in IPhoto Express. Just got started with IPhoto and haven't figured it out, so am not yet able to do much manipulation, but can make copies. I tried Picture It, Imaging, and Paint and none of those programs would cooperate. The icon attached to the pictureslooks like a word icon but without the 'W'. Instead it has a large red 'A' in the lower right corner of the
icon (a sheet of paper with the upper right corner turned over). I can not find that icon on anything in my PC. I suspect my neice scanned the pictures into a document program and than saved and sent them from that program but I don't know what.
THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR HELP. Rose Lynn

Hi to All - We need some action on this site to let students see it in
operation
I have a HP 712C Deskjet that is sick. I had a paper jam while doing
envelopes. Since then it has been out of alignment especially in The
Print Shop Deluxe Version 6. My cards do not come out lined up
properly. They are not centered. I have played with the Print
Properties in the Program, and I have run through the cleaning and
aligning of the printer in the print menu. It has been cleaned etc. Does
anyone have any suggestions on what I should do next? I thought of
uninstalling the memory and reinstalling it from the CD, but I do not
know what I would gain with that. I would appreciate all the assistance
I can get.
Thanks, Jane

Sent an e-mail directly to you, so will repeat my possible solutions. I have the hp 722C. 1) See if you have a toolbox; if so, go to Printer Services and go through the services one at a time. It might be of value to go over the other tabs in the toolbox dialog window, too. 2)What about your manual? Mine is really complete and answers a lot of questions. The company, Computer Express, is an authorized hp service center and I have found them to be very helpful. 3)hp has a web site just for their pri
ters, have you checked the FAQ's on their site? 4)I don't think that 'uninstall and reinstalling' your printer can do any harm and it just might do the trick.
Good Luck, Rose Lynn

Hi again - I have a mouse problem now. It will click but it will not
double-click. I can click on an item once and then hit Enter and get
there.
In mouse properties, the test square will not function. Does anyone
have any suggestions. I would appreciate some help. Even, go but a new
mouse is acceptable. I just want some assurance that I need one.
Also, I am reading the Printer manual and I know alot and understand
very little. The Printer still is not working. Computers are a humbling
experience.
Thanks to you all, Jane

Indeed they are humbling.
They are as humbling as the people who made them, who are incidently as humbling as the people we meet every day.
My assumption: PCs were created by zen-crazed daoists to teach us all our place. And improve the grace with which we accept defeat.
Two things Western civilization seriously needs, if somebody were to ask me, but fortunately, nobody does.
Dear Jane, to deal with the more immediate problem, have you tried changing the setting for double-click speeds? Or tried to double-click really fast...
Do the right mouseclicks still work?
While you're at it, you may want to switch the box off and turn the mouse over, open the belly-clap and clean its tummy. Not that it will have immediate impact on the current problem, but there'll be a lot of stuff sticking against the cylinders noticing mouse-movements. This ought to improve handling your digi-rodent.
Also check if the plug is sitting tight in the appropriate socket.
With finest regards,
Alexander

Yes, Alexander - You were right, of course. I got cocky and set the mouse speed to max and no great grandmother can double click that fast. However i did buy a new mouse in the process. It is a Logitech First Mouse+, and it is the best thing since sliced bread. It has a roller wheel that scrolls pages and it a real pleasure to use. It is for left or right handed people. I am left handed but use a right handed mouse and double click with my middle finger. It fits all my needs.
Thanks for caring, Jane

This is my first attempt
If I have a question is this the only way I can ask it? Do I have to go to All in seniorcomp, then 20 questions from students, then go through all the responses, and then enter my question in the box at the end? I think this is a wonderful forum but I'm confused about how to ask my question.

Dear Audrey,
whenever you come here again (e.g. this time you read this), you should only see the new responses posted since you last looked in here.
If you want to see the older things, use the "Back-up and redisplay from response number: "-function by entering a number (less than last response, equal or greater than 0). I often have something like the last five or ten responses redisplayed, to remember what preludes the current postings and what the others reply to.
This is how it's for me, using Netscape's Navigator. If you do this via telnet, it is different, and I do not know how. But Wer would know...
Have you ever tried any of the other flavors here at the Spring? Collecting, Music, Books, Movies, all kinds of fun places! And nice people, too...

Can anyone out there explain to me (in easy terms)what "Microsoft Fast Find" is for? How does it work? Is it necessary to have in the StartUp? Does the Index die away at BootUp? I couldn't find anything on it in the Help. Would appreciate it. Joe
~ratthing

hi joe! MS Fast Find is a utility for searching your hard drive for
files, images, documents, folders, anything.
when you first run it, you have to let it build a database of information regarding the
contents of your hard drive. once that database is made, you can run fast
find to help you locate stuff.
it is not necessary to have it in Startup, unless you plan on using it much.
you might want to take a look at this web page for more info...

Thank You Ray for your response. It was already in the StartUp, I didn't put it there. So I was just wondering how much resources it uses. The only Index that is listed is the C drive. I use the Find Files and Folders very seldom, so it might be beneficial for me to remove it from startup. If that is the only thing that it does. Thank You Joe

I have a question. Does anyone know what the purpose is for all the Files with Extensions .LGC that are located in the hidden Windows/applog folder? Joe
~ratthing
Fri, Aug 27, 1999 (21:00)

hey joe. those files are used in various housekeeping functions by
windows. windows stores information about particular programs
in those files, each of which is named for the program it
represents. the info includes stuff about the positions of the files
when defrag is run, info about speeding up the functions of the
programs, etc.

Ray I copied all the files to my B Zip just in case and deleted only the LGC files. There was about seven other files left LGA,LGD and etc. So far it hasn't exploded so maybe I'll survive. I have opened several programs but nothing has been added to the folder yet. When would this occur I wonder. Thanks again for your help. Joe

hey sarah. delete those suckers!! windows generates them while it goes
about its business. the Temp folder is kind of a "scribble pad" for
windows to use day-to-day. it is safe to delete the files.

Hi Ray,
My daughter-in-law sent me a file with pictures and I am unable to read it. At the very top of the file it says,"This file must be converted with BinHex 4.0"
I know that it was sent from her Apple computer. I hate the idea of telling her that I cannot open it. Help Please. Sarah

Ray, Joe suggested that I try Winzip and sure enough I was able to extract the photos and then open them in Corel's Paint 8 program. I am still curious about this BinHex 4.0. It took a long long time to download the files from the ISP. Sarah
