NFL picks. The ground rules. Pick your teams before the kickoff of the first NFL game over the weekend. We're starting with week 3 of the '96 NFL season. The picks were over running our NFL '96 item and TJ Cellery came up with this bright idea!

Ma' pix (and x - where Max differs) as you may have heard on Max's radio this morning (1490 am KFON). We disagree on four games. Saints sink AZ Chiefs cream Denver Packers over Minnesota (my gut says otherwise) Pats put away Jacksonville Jets jettison Giants 9ers put out Panthers Bucs scuttle Seahawks x - Cardinals upset Redskins (going against the grain here) Detroit dusts off Da' Bears Dallas defeats da' Bills x - Raiders roust Chargers x - Falcons flatten Philly x - Miami (upset) messes up the Indy Colts (go JJ!) Now, when the fax comes in I'll post it up here. I hear that there are 30 picks this week over KFON's listener line.

Mike's post beat mine by 2 seconds! Guess we're both stuck inside because of these heavy rains. I hope the above post isn't too cryptic. Postings close down with the kickoff of the first NFL game this weekend.
~oplion Fri, Sep 20, 1996 (23:06) #16
Well; newer newbee's,bring them on,but I don't think you should allow wholesale picks..after all WE do have to remember this is not a Radio Show,We have computers...! Let them in if you must, howerever How can you give a web page to a radio listner..? nuff said.PICKS. Grreen Bay Card's Bucks Skins San Fran Kansas Jets Lions Jax San Diego Buff Philly Umm...Dolphins
~terry Fri, Sep 20, 1996 (23:19) #17
It's ok for radio talk show listeners to make picks. We got this in by fax. Let's see if someone comes up with a perfect score this week. By the way, here's a summary of the KFON 30 picks: GB 25 Miami 5 Det 7 KC 23 Jets 19 NYG 11 SF 29 Caro 3 AZ 2 NO 28 Sea 10 TB 20 Wash 17 StL 11 Jack 9 NE 21 Chi 9 Det 21 SD 19 Oak 11 Dallas 15 Buff 15 Phil 22 Atl 8 Mia 15 Indy 15 Hmmm, not many Dolphins supports out there. And look at that Cowboys split. The Niners get the most votes.
~Mariner Sat, Sep 21, 1996 (17:53) #18

Are you missing a couple of games?
~bnbstat Sun, Sep 22, 1996 (09:24) #20
Here's my picks: Dallas New Orleans Denver Green Bay Jets San Francisco Washington Chicago Tampa Bay New England Oakland Philadelphia Miami
~Mariner Sun, Sep 22, 1996 (14:06) #21
I just got in and realized that I left out a pick, so if its okay my missing pick was KC over Broncos, and I honestly haven't watched any of the game so I don't even know who might be winning!
~terry Sun, Sep 22, 1996 (14:28) #22
OK we believe you. But no more exceptions. The games are underway now and I'm kicked back watching the Packers lose the to Vikings. It's still early though. I told Max when I made my pick that my gut said Minnesota. 14-7 Vikes at the half. And, holy cow, the Panthers have the Niners down 14 to zip. Skins over Rams 10-0 in the third. Giants 7 and Jets 6 in the 3rd. Pats over Jags in the third. Some early returns at the half of the FOX game one.
~boyce2 Mon, Sep 23, 1996 (12:24) #23
Cool, 8-4 for me... There must be something wrong with that key on the fax picks, though, It looks like everybody chose Carolina, whereas the totals indicate only 3 did.
~terry Mon, Sep 23, 1996 (14:33) #24
I'll fix that.
~boyce2 Wed, Sep 25, 1996 (15:53) #25

Okay, I tallied the non-fax participants: boyce 8-5 Max,oplion,Mariner 7-6 TJ, lydle 6-7 Terry, bnbstat 3-10 As for the faxed ones, the key must be wrong. Are you gonna fix it, terry?
~boyce2 Thu, Sep 26, 1996 (18:24) #28
To make tallying easier, I would appreciate it if y'all would submit your picks in one line, in the order that I post them (Response 25), using the three letter codes as follows: AFC east - Ind, Buf, Mia, NE, NYJ cent - Hou, Pit, Bal, Cin, Jac west - KC, Den, SD, Oak, Sea NFC east - Phi, Was, AZ, Dal, NYG cent - Min, GB, Det, Chi, TB west - Car, SF, StL, Atl, NO Thanks!

Was about impossible to read some of the names on the fax, so some of them are guesses that'll get ironed out in the future, doubtlessly... ~boyce2 Tue, Oct 1, 1996 (12:32) #37
I'll put together a 5 week total soon... A question that we'll be wanting to think about: In picking an overall winner, do we want to accommodate people that haven't participated the whole time? For example, we could take people's best w/l totals for their best say, 12 weeks. Or we could do the best winning percentage for all the picks turned in, but that has the disadvantage of benefitting those who haven't played except for one good week. Post proposals here, as well as name corrections if you know 'em... Thanks.
~TJ Tue, Oct 1, 1996 (14:13) #38
I took a beating in week one, because I joined in week 2...... Best possible way is to go whole season the same way. Everyone on equal footing. People starting late and want in on the whole season take 1 less win then the lowest person and start from there.
~terry Tue, Oct 1, 1996 (14:25) #39
I'd set a certain minimum number of games picked, at least half say to qualify for the season championship. That way folks could conceivably enter up to midseason, but not just coast by on a few weeks.
~boyce2 Tue, Oct 1, 1996 (15:04) #40
So 8 games? That sounds good to me... People who played in week one and every week thereafter stand to carry a huge advantage if we go TJ's way. Here's another possibility that my freinds use in their pool: Assume that any unspecified pick follows the line printed in the paper. That takes care of any errors that people make (not picking an individual game accidently) And even if you miss a whole week, it's not a huge price to pay. I think this method may be a little generous, but it'll keep more people in the hunt, and since this is just a friendly game, why discourage participation? If you really want to include a minimum number of weeks, that'll work too. Eight and ten both seem like fair minimums to me...
~boyce2 Wed, Oct 2, 1996 (13:43) #41
Week 6: Atl at Det Car at Min GB at Chi NE at Bal Oak at NYJ Sea at Mia Ind at Buf Jac at NO SD at Den SF at StL Hou at Cin Pit at KC Again, please put your picks in one line, seperated by commas, using the order and abbreviations above. Thanks.

Okay, week 4 is now compiled. Overall standings will be continually updated at NFL Totals I'll be doing a week backwards each week, so you'll be able to see results from weeks 3-6 sometime next week, 2-7 after that... Problem: Not too many of the fax people play every week...
~Mlydle Fri, Oct 4, 1996 (22:28) #46
I tried to get on DDs show to enter the picks, but had to go to a high school football game. Anyway here are my picks: Det, Min, GB, NE, Oak, Mia, Ind, NO, Den, SF, Hou, KC
