Dennis Rodman made his way through central Texas with the Spurs and is now garnering massive amounts of publicity as a Bull. Love him. Hate him. Whatever you think, this guy has a knack for getting in the spotlight with wild hair colors, technical fouls aplenty. And he is definitely in contention for the games greatest rebounder of all time (or maybe not?).

In the paper, ther's an article that says Dennis dad, Philander, had 27 kids and is going for 30. He lives in the Phillipines and Dennis hasn't seen him in 30 years. I think he got a pretty lucrative one year re-up with da Bulls.

Jordan says Rodman has lost interest in the game. Does Michael have a point here or is he just trying to light a fire under Dennis? Rodman is second in rebounding this year.

From the WELL sports conference: Topic 637 [sports]: Dennis Rodman makin' waves! #450 of 484: Jerry (bost) Tue Jan 21 '97 (14:33) 13 lines If Dennis had not already been up to his eyeballs in shit with the league over the years his penalty would not have been as severe. But he has consistently brought negative attention to himself and this imo should be the biggest fine and suspension in league history. Actually, I feel the issue goes deeper than Dennis Rodman, who I bet is not as favorably looked upon by those we might think are impressionable like the younger kids watching the games, but if one person uses this as an example on how to conduct themselves in a sportsmanlike fashion then sports as I knew it is farthur and farthur away from me than I thought. Don't forget, the photog was there doing his "job" also. Did he kick Dennis for falling on him? If he broke the rule about where to shoot the game from, fine him. Suspend him. The NBA could not afford to not give Dennis the shaft. Topic 637 [sports]: Dennis Rodman makin' waves! #451 of 484: Michael Newman (jstraw) Tue Jan 21 '97 (15:08) 1 line No monopods courtside at basketball games. Topic 637 [sports]: Dennis Rodman makin' waves! #452 of 484: Glenn Mar (gmar) Tue Jan 21 '97 (18:46) 17 lines Jstraw, you are making a separate and not really even related point about the photography zone, and on that I agree. Actually, I agree with both your points. As someone who has shot plenty of hoop, everyone's probably better off with them deeper - leaves room for more photographers and the angles are just as good. My point about suing is also really unrelated. I think being kicked in the balls is a serious offense no matter who does it. I would hurt just as much if a poor guy did it to me as if a rich guy did. I am not the first to say that America is overly litigious. $200,000 seems fair, considering Rodman's income, but some settlement in the millions would be ridiculous. As you say, we should all be so lucky. I only saw the replay once, but it looked like Rodman just didn't like getting up from a fall and seeing a videocamera in his face. He actually fell on someone else. Topic 637 [sports]: Dennis Rodman makin' waves! #453 of 484: Michael Newman (jstraw) Tue Jan 21 '97 (19:07) 2 lines The notion that personal injury settlements shopuld be based on the perps ability to pay makes me shudder. Topic 637 [sports]: Dennis Rodman makin' waves! #454 of 484: Jerry (bost) Tue Jan 21 '97 (20:29) 5 lines Dennis doesn't mind the cameraman so close to the court when he makes a play and wants to mug for the guy...."I'm the man, this is my house".And runs the court with arms waving, to make sure the camera at the other end stays on him. Topic 637 [sports]: Dennis Rodman makin' waves! #455 of 484: name withheld Tue Jan 21 '97 (20:53) 8 lines #453 -- why does it make you shudder? There are two types of awards made in personal injury cases: compensatory, which reimburse the plaintiff (be it for lost property, medical expenses, pain and suffering, or whatever) and punitive, which punish the defendant in an attempt to discourage repeat incidents by him or others like him. Compensatory damages are based on the actual damages, but the punitive awards are based on the defendant's ability to pay (because they are designed to hurt; it has to be enough so that he'll feel it). Topic 637 [sports]: Dennis Rodman makin' waves! #456 of 484: Andrew J. Dhuey (dhuey) Tue Jan 21 '97 (23:20) 4 lines Here, here on #455. This is nasty, *intentional* wrongdoing we're talking about here. You have no business doing such a thing in a civilized society. If you do, expect to be punished. Topic 637 [sports]: Dennis Rodman makin' waves! #457 of 484: Glenn Mar (gmar) Wed Jan 22 '97 (18:05) 4 lines [name withheld]'s right - that *is* what's happening today. My point is that it strikes me as overdone when people look for someone to sue, and "coincidentally" find more cause to sue rich people. That to me is golddigging and over-encouraged in our courts. Topic 637 [sports]: Dennis Rodman makin' waves! #458 of 484: Andrew J. Dhuey (dhuey) Wed Jan 22 '97 (23:23) 7 lines Sounds pretty just to me. Wealthy folks get to enjoy so much more of what a capitalist society has to offer. The fact that they are not judgment proof gives them extra incentive to behave themselves. There a plenty of examples of frivolous, unnecessary litigation. I think that cases seeking punitives against rich *intentional* wrongdoers is the civil justice system at its best. Topic 637 [sports]: Dennis Rodman makin' waves! #459 of 484: deny the piety in the Pope's appendix (lipow) Thu Jan 23 '97 (08:37) 1 line Only a fraction of 1% of all civil cases are found to be frivolous. Topic 637 [sports]: Dennis Rodman makin' waves! #460 of 484: Andrew J. Dhuey (dhuey) Thu Jan 23 '97 (10:59) 4 lines "found" is your key work there. If you consider the cases in which the plaintiff is about to go down in flames and cuts an "each side walks away from this case" deal at the 11th hour, it must be higher than 1%. Topic 637 [sports]: Dennis Rodman makin' waves! #461 of 484: name withheld Thu Jan 23 '97 (11:22) 4 lines I'm sure you're right, but it's a hell of a lot better than some other systems, where those with deep pockets can routinely get away with atrocities. At least in our system the common man has some recourse and a very real chance for compensation. Topic 637 [sports]: Dennis Rodman makin' waves! #462 of 484: Stan Hutton (sh) Thu Jan 23 '97 (13:49) 5 lines I saw the replay again and it did look like the photog was moving his camera to get a shot of Rodman on the floor. It was probably just a natural reaction to keep covering the action. Topic 637 [sports]: Dennis Rodman makin' waves! #463 of 484: deny the piety in the Pope's appendix (lipow) Thu Jan 23 '97 (14:16) 2 lines RE #460 - If the plaintiff is "about to go down in flames", then why should the respondant agree to anything? Topic 637 [sports]: Dennis Rodman makin' waves! #464 of 484: Andrew J. Dhuey (dhuey) Thu Jan 23 '97 (16:05) 9 lines Because it is ususally cheaper just to put the case to rest (lawyers are pricey). Add to the mix: judges are very disinclined to find that a case is so weak as to be frivolous; even if you have the case thrown out as frivolous, you might not get attorneys fees back; and to top it all off, an award of your attorneys fees is only as good as the financial resources of the plaintiff (on rare occassions the award can be against the attorney). Considering the foregoing, the smart move for the defendant is to cut the deal and walk away. Topic 637 [sports]: Dennis Rodman makin' waves! #465 of 484: Glenn Mar (gmar) Thu Jan 23 '97 (18:58) 4 lines I wouldn't be surprised if some rich folks have "settled" when they're innocent. Justice by cash is a matter of degree, and I agree that $200,000 would break most people, but is OK for Rodman. Millions would be out of line. Topic 637 [sports]: Dennis Rodman makin' waves! #466 of 484: Phineas Priesthood (josh) Thu Jan 23 '97 (19:48) 6 lines Why? How many games does Rodman have to pay to make a million bucks? I'd say $1 in compensatory damages and $10,000,000 in punitive, if indeed Rodman's kick was intentional (and indeed didn't do any serious damage). $1 because the guy was taking risks and knew it; the millions for bad manners. Topic 637 [sports]: Dennis Rodman makin' waves! #467 of 484: Sam Delson (samiam) Thu Jan 23 '97 (23:23) 1 line He makes $1 million every 9 or 10 games. Topic 637 [sports]: Dennis Rodman makin' waves! #468 of 484: Reformed member of Rambis Youth (swoopcat) Fri Jan 24 '97 (09:39) 4 lines I think the total salary was somehting like 9 mil for the year, which would be about 110k per game; but that 9 mil figure includes a lot of incentives; I think the base contract was actually somehting like 5-6 mil. Topic 637 [sports]: Dennis Rodman makin' waves! #469 of 484: Glenn Mar (gmar) Fri Jan 24 '97 (12:32) 16 lines What is overlapping here are the ideas of punitive damages (disciplinary pain for Rodman) and compensatory cash (making the cameraman feel compensated for being kicked). I believe a kick in the groin area hurts the same whether it comes from a rich or poor person. Therefore, cash to compensate that pain shouldn't vary that much. I assume nobody is going to make the case that being kicked by Rodman in public has damaged the cameraman's esteeem or reputation beyond $200,000 of repair. Punitive damages, on the other hand, maybe is the issue. The league already suspended Rodman 11 games. Maybe the Bulls feel that Rodman doesn't empathize with their feelings about respect to the camera crew. If so, they could fine him whatever they want and if it gets the behavior they want, I'm fine with it. I just don't think that punishment for that purpose should go to the cameraman. Give it to the hospitals who treat people for free who can't pay, that would be enough correlation for me. Topic 637 [sports]: Dennis Rodman makin' waves! #470 of 484: name withheld by request Fri Jan 24 '97 (13:12) 3 lines Punitive damages always go the person who brings the civil suit. It may or may not be fair (I tend to agree with you, actually), but that's the way the laws are written... Topic 637 [sports]: Dennis Rodman makin' waves! #471 of 484: Art Siegel (arto) Sun Jan 26 '97 (11:31) 3 lines There have been proposals from time to time to have punitive damages go to the government, or a charity or something. Business interests oppose it on the grounds that juries will give bigger awards in that scenario. Topic 637 [sports]: Dennis Rodman makin' waves! #472 of 484: Goodbye Allie, Goodbye Allie ... (fishmanj) Sun Feb 2 '97 (06:24) 10 lines So Jesse Jackson is now 'counseling' Dennis Rodman so Dennis can 'retain his dignity'. What a great way for Jesse to spend his time !!! I'm glad to see Jesse feels that Dennis comes before less pressing issues such as drugs, crime, joblessness, racial tension and disenfranchisement. I always disliked Jesse for hogging the media - but this is ridiculous. But why should i be surprised. These two jerks would sell their souls to be in front a camera - Jackson for his ego, and Rodman to line his pocketbook. Topic 637 [sports]: Dennis Rodman makin' waves! #473 of 484: (rhino) Sun Feb 2 '97 (10:11) 4 lines A perfect match, if you ask me. If they are together, we can ignore both of them at the same time. Topic 637 [sports]: Dennis Rodman makin' waves! #474 of 484: name withheld Sun Feb 2 '97 (10:12) 2 lines I think Jackson pumps his ego, yes, but he also fills a needed role as a leader -- maybe THE leader -- in the African-American community. Topic 637 [sports]: Dennis Rodman makin' waves! #475 of 484: Andrew J. Dhuey (dhuey) Sun Feb 2 '97 (10:28) 3 lines So nice of him to appoint himself to that position. Topic 637 [sports]: Dennis Rodman makin' waves! #476 of 484: Robin O'Donnell (ode) Mon Feb 3 '97 (09:47) 4 lines Not nice, dhuey. Jackson has a loooooooong history as being a true leader in the African-American community. He didn't exactly appoint himself. I love the guy, but this is a little weird. Is he going to adopt every bad-boy millionaire black dude ? I think John Starks is much more in need of counseling than Rodman. As the word turns, so good the bulls. And his 3-4 rebounds a game these days are putting da Bulls in the hole with the Jazz. And the Mormon slam and the Vegas trip. Time for the worm to get serious about guarding the mailman. Or da Bulls may go down.
