Uh, they exist like since forever. NRBQ spells New Rhythm and Blues Quartett, so I guess it means they are four guys, right?

I asked John if he recognized them:
Yes, I am familiar with them. Four of them. They're avante garde R&B,
different but of a similar genre as the old Parliament/Funkadelic (George
Clinton, who has now gone mainstream, composing movie scores).
