Jerry Jeff Walker loves Austin. He made his home in Austin in '71, after leaving New York. He turned 53 on Oct. 15, 1996 and his just released his 27th album called Scamp on Tried and True Music on the same date. The first issue of Capitol City magazine has a great article about Jerry Jeff called "The Epitome of Texas."

The Gypsy Songman album ('86) rocks! It was recorded in Walker's Den and
has songs from his entire career. Another great is the "Live at Gruene
Hall" album ('89). Correct me if I'm wrong, but isnt' Gruene pronounced
"green"?

Gypsy Songman indeed rocks- I particularly like JJW's take on "Hands on the Wheel", and the exquisitely beautiful "Layin' My Life on the Line". God bless him...

Maybe a Dylan topic? And a top ten LPs, and/or singles, maybe by genre and era- may generate some interest, per recent mini-explosion in books conference...

Probably all that would be necessary would be topic for LPs, and one for singles, actually. Folks could distinguish genre/era for themselves, if they so wished (like fiction/nonfiction/poetry top tens in Books conference)...

Jerry Jeff Walker... we don't get to hear much about him up in these parts! Last time I saw him was at the Broken Spoke about 2 1/2 years ago.

Saw JJW first time when I was 16, in Galveston- my first concert (without my parents), actually- and it was awesome, though this was during his pre-Susan, hard living Gonzo days, and he was so smashed by the end of the show I thought he might collapse into the front row. He was drinking beer from those big Lone Star cups during the entire performance, and when he'd finish one, he'd set the cup on the edge of the piano, and this hand would mysteriously appear from behind the curtain, and replace the empty
cup for a filled one (and he was probably the hardest working guy in the auditorium- Jerry Jeff was drinking about a beer per song, and he played for nearly 3 hours...) Last time I saw him was more than 15 years ago- he opened up for Little Feat, and he really rocked the crowd. Keep saying I'm going to make one of his birthday bash-concerts, but haven't yet (and he was at Rockerfellers, in Houston, last week)...

I dunno but I know he stopped drinking about 5 years ago altogether. Strange to see him with bottled water at the last concert.

JJW's birthday bash thing is tentatively set for the last weekend in March, ending with Luchenbach concert that Sunday. Tickets will go on sale in January.
Anyone desiring further information (or to get on JJW's mailing list- along, I'm given to understand, with both Bill Clinton and Al Gore) can call Tried and True Records (JJW's company) at 512-477-0036.
