what do your dreams mean to you? are they just the result of thoughts and events that the brain puts into sequential order or are they something else? unresolved situations, greetings from close friends or acquaintances, wishes, parallel lives?

i like having dreams, good or bad ones. i have found that dreams eases my suffering if i've lost someone dear. have probably jinxed myself, but i've dreamt about people/animals that i've lost and have awoke to find myself feeling happy. i lost a kitten to a van smashing into him as he wandered across the street late one night and a few nights later, i saw him frolicking about as happy as a lark. i also heard him meowing in the morning. once i swore he was sitting on the boat in the driveway (where he
usually sat waiting for me to open the door). anyway, after that, no more dreams about him, nor hearing his little voice calling me. i felt he was at peace and all was well. later, i had to put down a old dog (beagle) i had rescued from the streets. we had her for a year and i said she would have a good year of her life with us and not suffer (she had been abused). she ended up being put down because she developed an inoperable tumor pressing against her windpipe. i hurt so much for having to make th
t decision even though i knew it was right. she knew it was coming too. she was the sweetest little thing. i asked for her to visit me so i knew she'd be alright. and i dreamt about her and she was in heaven smiling and healthy. i knew she'd be alright too and my guilt/pain went away. i don't know why that is, but i think if we open ourselves up to unconventional thinking, we can and will become aware of that force which is around us. i also dreamt about a co-worker who died of cancer. he was back
up in the office just as obnoxious as ever (and i mean that affectionately). i've also dreamt about friends whom i hadn't seen in a while and usually i'd hear from them in a few days. spooky, huh?

had this dream a while back:
i had died (i think) and was in a turqoise blue room. it was liquidy and i was floating around but wasn't actually in water. and i was escorted by a being that i believed was God or an angel. He was showing me different rooms and it was all very comforting.

Wow, Dear, you have powerful dreams. I dream a lot, too. One comes to mind which I find painful to remember. Someone I loved very much but was unattainable - I dream I see them and they are just beyond where I can talk to them...or are too far away, but I can see them. Most difficult to awaken from those dreams and relive the loss all over again.

yes....yes! except in my running dreams, I cannot run, but risk terrible things (being eaten by a polar bear as a child I had recurrent night-stallions - as one person put it)if I don't run, but I cannot run...etc.

I have very complicated, realistic dreams. Most people don't believe that mine are as intricate and lifelike as they are, but it has been suggested to me that the reason I have dreams like that is because I have an overactive imagination. I mean, I dream in period costumes sometimes (which could point to a past life experience--which is another topic you could have on Paraspring hint, hint,) I dream about foreign countries I've never visited (Germany and Poland a lot,) and sometimes I even understand l
nguages I've never studied.

Are you aware of phrases and words in the languages after you waken? I mean, does it help you learn new languages? Or is it just an awareness of those languages being spoken and understood?

I'm glad to hear that someone else has had those kind of dreams, and I'm not a complete weirdo!

I think they sound fabulous! Mine are very clear too, but usually with the huge, colourful snakes lurking everywhere, or other monsters. Usually a little surreal. But, no Marcia!!, nothing phallic about those snakes. It's thrilling, because they are beautiful, and I'm scared of them, I run away, there is a door, I want to open it, but there is a beautiful poisonous snake draped around the door handle. I somehow manage to get through the door, but after that the obstacles get higher, the snakes multip
y, and eventually I wake up. It's always a shame when that happenes, because I would love to see what happens when there is nothing but snakes, and I can't get through the obstacles anymore.

Are they like the kite-shaped ones in your comic art?

Sorry, Marcia--I didn't see your question until just now.
No, I don't think I could remember anything in foreign languages from the dreams. As I said, I mostly dreamed of Germany and Poland, and I've never studied either of those languages, so I might have an easy time learning them if I tried. I do remember that once I awoke with the word "Appenzell" stuck in my head, and I looked it up and found out that it's a canton of Switzerland. I have no idea why I was dreaming of that, though.

Amy, why do you think your dreams are about Germany and Poland? Is there any significance there?
Marcia, ha-ha! No no, my dream snakes are totally realistic - just in bright yellows and greens and reds etc. instead of brown or black. I guess it's a sort of visual manifestation of the fear and the fascination that I have for them.

I have no idea why I dream about Germany and Poland. I have one German ancestor that I know of, so it's not like its my ancestral homeland or anything. I do have a lot of German-speaking Alsatian ancestors on my mom's side, so maybe its not really Germany I'm dreaming of, but Alsace-Lorraine. I started dreaming about Poland when I was with a Polish guy, so that's probably why I was dreaming of there.

Wow. You sound like you're pretty sensitive to impressions, and like it's all very visual with you. It must be like travelling in time when you dream.

I think you were responding to me, Riette...
Actually, many of my dreams are not that visual. I just seem to get, as you say, impressions of things. I know that people or things are there, but I can't see them in detail and I guess I just fill in the things I can't see with what I already know. Does that make sense?
