What is the best baker around town?

I used to like Texas French Bread, but mostly because they were near my house and I could walk over for my Sunday morning baguette. Plus they had excellent chocolate cake. There used to be a good one on 6th in that "Pecan Street" whatever complex (they had a screen door, over which they had a sign that had their name, what was their name, aaaugh!), but last time I was there I think Sweetish Hill had driven them out. Which is too bad, but SH isn't all bad, either!

Pecan Street is still there and I had one of my more memorable meals there about atwo montsh ago. It's very comforting there, definitely the top restaurant on music row.

I generally prefer the bakery at Central Market. WER

Speaking of Central Market (and a bit off topic), do you feel the restaurant there has gone down hill in the last month?

Actually, the only food that I usually get from the restaurant are the prepackaged dishes, especially the smoked pork loin, and a pizza that I haven't seen there in a while. It was pesto, mushrooms, artichoke hearts, and feta. WER

My experience was that they raised their prices, cut the specialy restaurants from 5 down to one (they had several "theme" areas, and, worst of all, cut out my favorite dish.

Martin Brothers did that to me when they quit serving their club sandwich. WER

Again... I miss the groovy Austin yum houses! Paul, what was your favorite Central Market dish? Funny story... my family came to visit one holiday while I was living in Austin and I took them to Martin Bros. My dad eats meat, my grandfather eats meat. They wanted a Coke. We ate (I think they had a chicken dish) and on the way back they had to stop at Burger King. I've never been allowed to pick a restaurant again.

It was the baked chicken. It was made Italian style with seasoning and came with broccoli rice casserole from Threadgills. But they dumped that and all their other low cost dishes and "upscaled" it for more expensive tastes. Too bad!

Sweetish Hill wins in the readers poll this year.

Sweetish Hill. OK. This may be one area where Austin has a relative paucity of choices. Do you think?

as long as they're good I don't care!
