Nature provides many rich and varied visual models, which turn up in our language as metaphors. One of the oldest visual metaphors is the Tree of Knowledge. The Tree is a model of hierarchically organized information into a knowledge structure. (Think of an Outline Form as used in academic writing, or the Dewey Decimal System.) The patterns of stars and planets in the sky is a rich source of visual models which slowly "morph" from one pattern to another. These patterns and visual models stimulate our minds to apply diagrammatic models to events in culture and society. The diagram of the cross is an important one in our culture. It symbolizes meeting at a crossroads. Encounters at a crossroads give rise to all manner of stories and dramas. Competing and conflicting desires give rise to drama. Desires arise a number of ways. One way is that we desire that which secures us from our fears. And deep-seated fears are ubiquitous. Everyone has fears and worries, concerns, neuroses and phobias. Throw six billion souls onto a small planet, each with their idiosyncratic fears and desires, and let them encounter each other at random crossroads. There will be many stories to tell.

Yes and the stories are universaly linked...The Hopis talk about the return of the Cochina and if you look in the sky the cross resembles the cochina...Isn't it interesting that at Christ's birth this configuration appeared...as it did at the time of Noah's flood....the list goes on.... The mayans talk about this time, as do the Egyptians.

A friend and collaborator from our mag will marry a very charming, intelligent and - need I mention this? - good-looking person on August 13th. Any comments/advice?
