The Univeristy of Texas Longhorns have a great tradition and
orange blood runs thick around Austin. Coach Mackovic has put
together a team with national championship potential, will this be
the year they put it all together? Let talk hookem horns here.

This is the football only item, I should have put that in the title. The
Runnin' basketball Horns will be another item.

They had an item on the news tonight about how the Horns are enjoying
their high tech - low tech *grass* playing field. It cost a million
bucks to set up a field where the rain is absorbed without ponding at the
rate of up to 5 inches per hour. The UT running backs will be able to
turn on a dime now. And UT has some pretty incredible running backs
(Ricky Williams, et al). Today was a pretty good test with the Hrons
practicing and all the rain we've been getting.

Well all you horn fans, you have just a short time until the all time # 1 team in the Nation will once again lead you thru a few quarters of false hope then crush you in the fourth to once again leave Texas with a victory. The Fighting Irish as always will PLAY LIKE CHAMPIONS and leave the Longhorns grazing on their new grass, once again making that great Texas traditional statement, Wait til next year.

That million dollar hunk of grass didn't hurt the Horns one bit in their
opener. In fact, they played on it like they knew every inch of it in a
pounding downpour against my old school, Mizzou. Lightning was a major
threat but hardly any fans split, they stuck around and the Horns
rewarded their bravery with a stellar 2nd half. Ricky Williams played an
awesome running game and Priest Holmes is *definitely* back among the
living.
These backs just stayed on their feet again and again and salvaged more
and more yardage out of what could have been losses. Chalk it up for the
Horns. But they are going to have to step it up for Notre Dame. If they
play like this in the first half against the Irish, they'll definitely be
in trouble.

You said it all, their own field, pounding rain and mizz who?????
I have no doubt that Texas will play a much better first half vs. ND
it the staying with them that will cost.

Come on Horns and Irish fans. No one else even interested?????? Would like to know of a place in or around Austin to watch the game with Irish Fans??????? Leons Country Store in Rockne might be a great place seeing as the town was named after Knute (A little texas/irish trivia for all you fans). My prediction still stands, Texas leads through 3 quarters, then the Fighting Irish rise up and in the memory of all the great Notre Dame teams, make ground beef out of the longhorns. GO IRISH
PLAY LIKE A CHAMPION TODAY

I'll be watching this game at home, I'll want to catch every play, and I don't need the hype of screaming fans, I'm hyped enough as it is...

OK guys, just 1 more day. Lou will find a way to win the game!!! Irish win in Texas (move into top 5), then defeat Ohio State and Washington at home. Glide through the rest of the season (Navy, Army, BC, USC). Finish season undefeated and play as the #2 in the National Championship game Vs. #1 Penn State. Nittany Lions get beat in a close one. Notre Dame # 1 1996 National Champions.

In yesterday's Statesman, Lou Holtz claimed, "God didn't put me on this earth to lose 4 times in Austin." So now God AND TJ want him to win?! Sounds a little desperate to me...
Although, since God has taken over the job of picking Miss America (the current winner claims) maybe he's picking football games too. Funny how he can't get a republican in the white house, though...

This is being hyped as the biggest game in Austin in 40 years. It rained
all night and the skies are cloudy. I'm picking the Horns to win 34-31. If
it's a low scoring game, Notre Dame will take it.
Comparisons:
Lou Holtz: always whining
Mackovic: sipping wine
Holtz may be the better motivator but Mackovic is the better offensive
strategist. Holtz says "it will sadden a lot of people if Notre Dame
loses". Aw gee.
I was in HEB and it was a madhouse a little while ago. An hour before
gametime and everyone's lined up to get their party stuff.
Texas goes at at 6th nationally, Notre Dame 9th. Dick Vitale is picking
Notre Dame to win, but, hey, this isn't basketball, babeeeee. He's in town
for the game (two of his daughters we to Notre Dame and one married Ron
Pawlus backup qb).
Go Horns, hookem babeeeee!

Can someone answer me just one question about the game? Where in the hell did the Horns PASSING GAME GO in the 2nd Half? I kept seeing Mike Adams standing behind Mackovic (In Trouble???), and was confused!! Once again Mackovic's questionable play-calling loses us a big game......Oh well.....It was a pretty exciting game......Little Earl for Heismann!!!! On to Virginia to inflict some retaliation!!!

4 Reasons for the longhorns choking:
1. James Brown's interception in the fourth quarter and the subsequent longhorn drive stalling out after 3 and out - what was he thinking throwing to a back who was behind the line 5 yards and had a defensive player on his back
2. The Longhorn punters shank in the fourth quarter which gave the Irish great field position to kick the winning field goal
3. The defense for not rising to the occasion and stopping the Irish offense when the needed to
4. Longhorn coaches
- for being too impatient and for calling too many passing plays when they should have been running down the clock
Another question, why does all the Austin media always get unrealistic expectations regarding Longhorn football, National Champs, I dont think so.
8-3 or 7-4 with a minor, maybe major bowl game if they are lucky.

Is that all you have to say for yourself boyce???? GO BUCKS????
Just wait, you guys will have all basketball season to dump on the worst team in the Big East But until then ON TO THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP with the FIGHTING IRISH OF NOTRE DAME. This week OSU falls while looking up at touchdown Jesus at South Bend. I actually think that Texas is the better team in this weeks mishap but could fall in Virginia's home. Winning the big one and the close one still a problem (same as last week) for the Texas coaches. My heart tells me to take Texas by 7 but my gut tell
me to take Virginia and 2. Does anyone know the current line???? Can Texas shake off the shock of last weeks loss??? Hope to see you all soon in the new topic?????? FIGHTING IRISH SPORTS.

Yeah. Go Bucks. You'll get yours. If last week demonstrated anything, it's that ND and Texas are in the same league, well short of national championship caliber. I think the Buckeyes will show us what it takes to compete.
The line is 3 1/2, VA is favored.
Meanwhile, the line on the OSU ND game has swung five points: Yesterday it was ND by 3, now OSU by 2. I would have put money I don't have on the bucks plus 3, this appears a little more realistic.

The Horns lived up to their potential in this weekends
game against Kansas. Ricky Williams dreadlocks were
flying and he rushed for almost as many yards as Kansas
star running back but with about half as many attempts.
190 yards I believe.
This clinches a bowl game and paves the way to a
possible Big 12 title for the Horns. A win over A&M
would really be a season maker now. I hope the Horns
keep the running game in the game plan more.

Thanksgiving brings the Texas/Texas A&M game is this week.
If texas wins, they play the winner of Nebraska/Colorado.
If Texas A&M beats Texas (shudder), there will be a three way
tie between Texas Tech, Texas, and Texas A&M. Oh my gosh.
The bonfire has been lit. The barbs have flown around. Priest Holmes
has bared his chest. We're ready to ruuuuuuuuumble!

Huskers and Horns go to it this Saturday up in St. Louis.
Now is *not* the time for Texas defense to let down. They
better come to the game early and work out extra hard.
I predict UT 21 Nebraska 14. The Nebraska offense has not
been showing up for the games lately. Hopefully, they'll
stay home in Lincoln this Saturday.
Nebraska is a 3 touchdown favorite so I'm going against the
grain. Nebraksa has only lost 2 games in the last 3
years!

It's good to see the Longhorns win the big game. I wonder if channel 3 is going to replay the game so I could record it. I feel sort of guilty for getting on Macs and Brown's case, but one has to give them credit they came through when it counted.

I really think Nebraska is going to be the Longhorns next big rival. Forget the Aggies, they might be more socially annoying but the Cornhuskers are more of a challenge. Either Maclovic is a genius or he needs to be admitted to Austin State Hospital. That play on 4th and inches took real gonads to call. When you look at the replay, if Brown would have run, he most likely would have been stopped short of the first down. So, luckily, the Nebraska DB (who was not needed to stop Brown) bit for Brown's ru
and got beat by Lewis. For all the whining I have done regarding Maclovic and Brown, they came through big time when the marbles were on the table and won the biggest games when it counted i.e. winning the last SWC championship and the first Big 12 championship. I wonder if channel 3 is going to replay the game so I could record it?
See you around, Mike Lydle

He (Mackovic) *didn't* call it. James Brown improvised it.
In the post game interview, Mackovic said, "..when he cocked
that arm, I thought uh oh not again . . . "
The Mackovic bettter pop open one of those $1,000 win bottles after
the greatest win in UT history.
What a game!

Well, UT bowled over Rutgers 48-14 not quite making their spread in our
little vanity pool, so legaffe pulls way ahead of the pack with 15,000
virtual dollars. Next week, UCLA on ABC.
Heard about the Ricky Williams thing. He got cuffed and hauled off to
jail by an overzealous UT cop and the cop got suspended. The cop had his
own website, which had a picture of Ronald Reagan on it (it is no longer
to be found on the net).
Phil Dawson moved in to the number one scoring postion at UT with a 54
yarder and he made a tackle at the 18 yard line off one of his kicks. He
has 284 career points now.
Ricky Williams ran for 155 yards and three touchdowns and Aaron Humphrey
had three interceptions as No. 12 Texas overcame a turnover-filled first
half.
James Brown may have hurt his ankle so Richard Walton may start next
weekend.
2:30 start next Saturday.

AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Texas halfback Ricky Williams will be wearing a new number Saturday.
Williams has received clearance to switch jersey numbers from No. 34 to No. 37 in honor of former Southern Methodist University running back Doak Walker, who died last month.
Williams, who befriended Walker last year after winning the award that bears Walker's name, will wear No. 37 when the Longhorns play Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas on Saturday.
Walker played for SMU during the late 1940s, when the football team began playing at the Cotton Bowl, which later became known as "the House That Doak Built." Walker died on Sept. 27 from complications of a skiing accident.
"I thought it would be neat to wear 37 in the House That Doak Built," Williams said of the temporary change. "Whether I have a great game or not, I'm going to play with him in my heart, a special thing I can do."

It wasn't a fluke, either. The Horns played a solid game all the way through. Nothing flashy, just good solid football. Nebraska's two losses this year came from Texas teams.
Had a good time watching the game at my favorite beer joint. Unfortunately, it's near campus, so when students jammed the streets I had a hell of a time riding a bus home.

They're #20. You can't beat Nebraska and not get in the Top 20.
A couple of years ago, I was briefly employed as a tutor to the football players, and at least two are still on the team. One of the nicer guys I tutored sacked the Cornhusker QB. I'm not claiming to have anything to do with that, but I did get him up to a B in history.

In the http://www.austin360.com
site there is a quote from Tony Dorsett:
"Tony Dorsett came to Memorial Stadium three years ago curious of mind and
specific of purpose: to carefully watch the performance of someone who
would
live in his shadow, chase his legend, be forever linked to his name.
Texas' Ricky Williams is threatening Dorsett's NCAA major- college career
rushing record."
I talked to Dorsett at the game, in fact I have a videotape of my
conversation with him. He came for one specific purpose, to watch his son
play for Pitt. He's coming Friday to see Ricky again in Austin.
Right now Ricky needs 62 yards against Texas A&M on the Friday after
Thanksgiving to break the record of 6,082 yards set by Dorsett with Pitt,
1973-76.

Believe the hype
Ricky Williams of Texas is such a dead-solid lock for the Heisman Trophy,
Saturday's ceremony is a formality. The only drama will be whether
Williams
wins by the largest margin in the esteemed award's 64-year history.
And he still gets to play in the Cotton Bowl. On Monday, Williams won The
Associated Press' first College Player of the Year Award.
Can he be another two sport star like Deon and Bo Jackson, he's gotta
learn to hit first.
The Cotton Bowl, eyeing a home-state team and its likely Heisman
Trophy-winning halfback, chose an 8-3 Texas team that's ranked No. 20
over an 11-1, fourth-ranked Kansas State squad that lost to Texas A&M in
double-overtime Saturday in the Big 12 championship game. Texas will play
Mississippi State, winner of the SEC's West Division.
What a season for the Horns.

Ricky Williams racked up the Heisman.
Another little bronze man.

1998 Ricky Williams, Texas, 714.
1976 Tony Dorsett, Pittsburgh, 701.
1984 Doug Flutie, Boston College, 678.
Widest Margins
1968 1750 O.J. Simpson USC over Leroy Keyes, Purdue 2853-1103.
1993 1622 Charlie Ward Florida State over Heath Shuler, Tennessee

1991 1574 Desmond Howard Michigan over Casey Weldon, Florida State

guy was awesome! He seemed better to me than the three runner up
quarterbacks.

Once again, the UT football team has figured out how to snatch defeat from
the jaws of victory in their season opener against NC State (a basketball

UT outplayed them in every way except special teams. The messed up on

Young Mr. Simms may will certainly have more ink than did his daddy in his quest to reach the NFL, since his daddy played for perennial football powerhouse *LOL* Morehead State (Minnesota). His daddy, who would still like to be playing, doesn't realize how lucky his "premature" exit to the broadcast booth was. I remember when the Giants were godawful and Simms was a young, highly touted, spectacularly paid (for the time) player taking gamely beatings because of a poor offensive line. Those things do ca

I hope TCU has a bad day. Nothing personally against the Horned Frogs, mind you, just as I have nothing personal against the Nittany Lions. I think I just might fancy going to school in a place called Fort Worth or Happy Valley. Both have names that just make you feel good.

There you go, John! (I though that was the usual pregame ritual in the locker room, but then I have never been in one...) That means it begins at 3:30 am for us. They just may have to party on without us for a while. Maybe we should start the night before and include the Penn State and Hawaii games on our tailgate. John???

The Horns are working out at Denius Fields in Austin, they are looking
pretty good and seem to be really focusing on their running game with Kenny
Hayter, Cedric Benson and another guy whose name escapes me right now. I
see where they're including Roy Williams in the Heismann list along with
Simms.
Mel Kiper, Jr., the noted ESPN draft analyst, included UT quarterback Chris
Simms and wide receiver Roy Williams in his list of the top 15 Heisman
Trophy candidates.
Simms was fourth on the list, behind Nebraska quarterback Eric Crouch,
Kiper's frontrunner, Clemson quarterback Woody Dantzler, and Oregon State
running back Ken Simonton.
Kiper said this of Simms: "Texas has the best wide-receiver corps in the
history of college football (led by Roy Williams). When you have that kind
of skill position talent around you, you're going to be able to throw the
football effectively. . . . And this year, Simms should feel more free since
the quarterback controversy of last season is past and he's the clear No. 1.
With the receivers he has at his disposal, his numbers should be
incredible."
Kiper saved some of his highest praise for Williams, who he ranked 11th.
Kiper said: "Williams is the best player in college football. He's an
awesome talent with his size and pass-receiving skills and is the best NFL
prospect in college right now."

"Remember the little boy you visited in the hospital, Major?"
While Chris Simms was entertaining a media circus, Major Applewhite spent
the post intersquad game time with the little boy he had visited in the
hospital. The squad looked good except for the kicking game. Simms and
Applewhite were both sharp and the running backs looked great. It was a
deja vu the last years high school championship to see Cedric Benson
plough
his way through the defensive line and break loose. They even rain
Cedric
out to wide receiver on one play.
Texas may have a third Heismann Trophy candidate in Cornerback Quentin
Jammer, undoubtedly the best at this position in the country. He'll
go high in the NFL Draft next year.
It was fun to go to this game, as it was as close a simulation as they
could do to the season opening game, they even started at the same
time the opener will start, 6 pm.
It will probably be another humid Texas Day and Royal Memorial will be
filled to capacity. I'm glad I got to relax in a front row seat on
the 50 yard line earlier tonight and watch some of the best players in
college football.

If you read today's front page lead story in the Statesman you would be
thinking that Texas first game was a blowout.
Not the case. The offensive line, 50-60 pounds heavier than New Mexico
States, let Baby Simms get sacked repeatedly. NM got about 3 very bad calls
on game turning plays.
There was no "dominance" here, as the AAS Writer reported.
But there was a bright spot. Another dreadlocked runner has arrived, Cedric
Benson. He carried the ball seven times in a row and scored a TD, and he
dragged a few New Mexico players along with him. He's the real deal. I
realized that as I watched and videotaped last years high school
championship game, this was the third state championship in a row where he
scored 5 touchdowns.

Yet Another Showdown
Oklahoma visits Nebraska for another titanic battle in this legendary series, and meets a top 10-ranked team for the third time in eight games this season. Texas was No. 5 (both polls) and Kansas State was No. 9 (ESPN/USA Today) when the Sooners met those teams earlier in this campaign. The 11 a.m. CDT game will be televised nationally by ABC with Brent Musburger, Gary Danielson and Jack Arute describing the action.
Due to the Big 12 Conference's scheduling rotation, Oklahoma and Nebraska will take a two-year break after this season. Next season, Nebraska, Kansas State and Kansas go off the Sooner schedule as the North Division's representatives to be replaced by Colorado, Iowa State and Missouri.

Texas has won 3 games against far lesser opponents, not making the spread twice.
And now, Roy Williams has a hamstring injury. He's, aurguably, the best receiver in the nation.
Texas season may ride on the severity of this injury.
for more on hamstrings:
http://www.thestretchinghandbook.com/archives/hamstring-injury-treatment.htm
A snippet:
If you do happen to suffer from a hamstring injury, it's important that correct first aid principles are applied immediately. The RICER regime explains the correct treatment for all muscle strain injuries. RICER stand for Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation, and then obtaining a Referral from a qualified sports doctor or physiotherapist. So, as soon as a hamstring injury occurs, rest the injured limb, apply ice to the effected area, apply a compression bandage and elevate the limb if possible. This treatment needs to continue for at least 48 to 72 hours. This is the most critical time for the injured area, correct treatment now can mean the difference between an annoying injury or a permanent, re-occurring, debilitating injury.
After the first 72 hours obtain a referral from a qualified professional and start a comprehensive rehabilitation program. This should include a great deal of strength and stretching exercises, as well as other rehabilitation activities such as massage and ultra-sound.

espn.com:
Oklahoma dipped into its play-bag of tricks against Missouri -- out of
necessity -- and the trickery paid dividends. Oklahoma scored a
touchdown on a fake field goal with 6:33 left to escape Columbia with a
31-24 victory Oct. 5. Holder Matt McCoy took the snap, waited a moment,
then threw a perfect lob to freshman tight end Chris Chester, who went
up and caught the ball between two defenders for his first career
reception. Nate Hybl's 2-point conversion pass to Curtis Fagan made it
31-24. Coach Bob Stoops said he liked his chances of the fake working
better than the chances of Trey DiCarlo making a 31-yard field goal.
DiCarlo had already missed an extra point and field goals of 34 and 43
yards. "I felt the percentages were pretty good it was going to be OK,"
said Stoops, whose team plays second-ranked Texas next week in Dallas.
The Longhorns said they weren't looking past Oklahoma State to their
matchup with rival Oklahoma. Right. Second-ranked Texas will have a
hard time getting anyone to believe them after the Oct. 5 17-15 victory
over the Cowboys that took cornerback Rod Babers' defensive stop on a
2-point conversion and a drive-killing interception in the fourth
quarter to seal the win. "It was a good, hard fight," said quarterback
Chris Simms, who passed for 267 yards and a touchdown and ran for
another in the Big 12 opener for both teams. "I think it's really good
we got a good hard test like this." Coach Mack Brown agreed. "It's good
to be in tight games because our kids are tested. You need to be in
some fights. It's dangerous for us every week. I hope our fans learned
something today," Brown said after the game.
Next week's Texas OU game should be awesome, it's the game of the
season for us Longhorn fans. It may decide who faces Miami in the
national title later this year.
Come early, stay late, we'll be partying on Spring before, during and
after the game next Saturday. Check out our insider coverage and live
audio feed.

Today's game would be an excellent opportunity for the Horns to redeem themselves after last weeks loss to Oklahoma (after leading for the first three quarters).

What had been up until now Mack Brown's moral, family oriented paradise is
now cracked.
To quote austin360.com's Kirk Bohl's:
Benson turned himself in to an Austin court Tuesday morning on a Class A
misdemeanor charge of criminal trespassing. He is accused of breaking into
a South Austin apartment to retrieve what he said was a stolen television.
Benson's first brush with the law, involving a marijuana possession
allegation in his hometown of Midland, ended with dropped charges. Benson
might well end up cleared of the current allegations, too.
Nevertheless, Brown must take action this time, suspending Benson for at
least a game for conduct detrimental to the team.
If for no other reason than becoming another distraction to a 5-2 team
that so desperately needs a clear sense of focus and purpose to accomplish
what few goals remain available to them, Benson deserves harsher treatment
than he received after the Midland incident. Brown announced Tuesday that
Benson will not start this week against Baylor but didn't say if he will
play.
"We will decide more about his participation on a day-to-day basis as we
follow the case," Brown said. "He's weathered storms before. I think
you'll see him stand up and weather this one as well." Benson's reputation
and the entire image of an operation Brown has so valiantly tried to cast
as a model program are at stake. A crack in that picture would do
immeasurable harm to a program that has already been rocked by a second
blowout loss to archrival Oklahoma and a mediocre record in Brown's
biggest games.
End Quote
Texas will probably beat Baylor without Cedric, who was once upon a time a
Heisman hopeful, in fact they would probably beat Baylor with Cedric the
Entertainer at running back.
But Mack Brown's dreams may be shattered. This is his first suspension of
a player at UT if he in fact holds Cedric back from Saturday's game.
Cedric shouldn't have busted down the door of that woman's South Austin
apartment to get back his plasma tv. Even if the Austin cops are useless
in a stolen property case. He had too much on the line.
What was he thinking?

This is so sad. It has been difficult for many fans this year with Florida State and 'Bama having problems. Tennessee has presidential problems. Penn State just can't win... it is difficult...

Mack Brown is the kind of coarch that doesn't make bold moves. He's the
kind of coach that "should have" done this or that but waited too long.
He's not like Mackovic who called the famous pass play in a running
situation in the Sugar Bowl to win that bowl game.
So in a game where Vincent Young had just had six pretty good drives and
had come of age what would be the last thing you would expect on the final
drive.
The last person you'd expect to see on the sidelines would be Vincent
Young.
Enter Chance Mock. Lubbock born. Son of a Texas Tech linebacker. He
entered the game with two minutes on the clock and Texas down to Texas
Tech by 5 points, trailing 40-35.
The same guy that Noah and I had been debating about with me saying Young
should run the whole show. The same guy who hadn't really played much for
the last 4-5 games.
So what happens? Mock completes a pass to Roy Williams. A 54 yarder.
Roy's brother used to play for Texas Tech and Roy grew up in East Texas,
in Texas Tech country. His brother was at the game wearing a Texas Tech
jacket, bright red in a sea of burnt orange. Oh yeah, and under the Texas
Tech jacket he had a burnt orange jersey with Roy's number on it.
With seconds left in the game, he throws a 19 yarder to BJ Johnson (who
may not have any East Texas roots as far as I know). Then Mock himself
punches it in
to the end zone himself with seconds left in the game.
Storybook? Hollywood? You bet! It was the most exciting football game
I've seen this season, maybe, arguably, the game of the year.

This time maybe UT - the Texas Longhorn football team - got it right.
Mack Brown, or whoever hired some NFL guy named Tomey and another NFL guy
to coach defense and offense. Finally, coaching on the field!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
But wait till these NFL coaches, who are used to watching the likes of
Peyton Manning, get a hold of the scouting videos of, gasp, Baylor and
Rice back to back. That will scare the daylights out of them.
Scary stuff! Baylor and Rice back to back.

By CHIP BROWN / The Dallas Morning News
PASADENA, Calif. Wearing his white No. 3 jersey and jeans with a Texas Rose Bowl champions baseball cap slightly cock-eyed, running back Selvin Young took in the celebration with his camcorder.
He stood next to the podium where his best friend, quarterback Vince Young, answered questions from reporters in the wake of becoming a national star in UT's 38-37 Rose Bowl triumph over Michigan.
"Vince is blowing up," Selvin Young said into his video camera. "It'll be me and him in the backfield next season."
ERICH SCHLEGEL/DMN
There's good news for Texas coach Mack Brown: Budding star quarterback Vince Young will be by his side again next season. The Texas offense loses five key seniors from this year's team, including receiver Tony Jeffery, fullback Will Matthews, tight end Bo Scaife and center Jason Glynn.
The biggest loss, however, will be Doak Walker Award-winner Cedric Benson, who ran for 1,834 yards and 19 touchdowns this season, giving the Texas offense its identity.
"Whatever Cedric finishes with this season will be my goal for next year and hopefully more," said Selvin Young, who will be a junior next season after redshirting with a broken ankle suffered in the second game against Arkansas.
"I feel like I'm going to step in where Cedric left off, and I can contribute that same amount and hopefully more. It's time for a new life, hopefully something better."
Young, a threat on punt and kick returns with career averages of 17.5 yards and 23.8 yards, respectively, also hopes to lead the nation in special teams next season.
Coaches say they see a hunger in Selvin Young that gives them confidence UT's rushing attack, ranked second nationally this season, can continue rolling. Young, who missed two games last season with a groin injury, has a career average of 5 yards per carry (132 attempts for 661 yards) in 26 games over three seasons.
"Sometimes you don't realize what you had until it's gone," Texas offensive coordinator Greg Davis said. "There's an excitement in Selvin we haven't seen. He's excited about spring practice, and I'm not sure he would have been excited if he hadn't sat out this year."
Texas will also have several freshmen to choose from, including top national recruits Jamaal Charles of Port Arthur Memorial and Henry Melton of Grapevine, both of whom have orally committed to the Longhorns.
At receiver, freshman Jordan Shipley, who redshirted this season with a torn knee ligament, Limas Sweed, Nate Jones, Myron Hardy and George Walker will be expected to take over for Jeffery, the team's leading receiver this season.
Freshman Ramonce Taylor, who averaged 10.1 yards per carry and 21.3 yards per reception this season, is expected to be used at running back and receiver similar to USC's Reggie Bush. If Texas wins the recruiting war for tight end Martellus Bennett of Alief Taylor, it would help ease the loss of Scaife and complement David Thomas.
On defense, Texas loses safety Phillip Geiggar and All-American linebacker Derrick Johnson, the heart and soul of the defense the last four years.
That role will move to middle linebacker Aaron Harris of North Mesquite, who led UT with 8 tackles in the Rose Bowl and finished second to Johnson's 129 tackles with 117 this season. Junior-to-be Garnet Smith of Arlington Lamar, sophomore-to-be Scott Derry and sophomore-to-be Robert Killebrew will battle it out to join Harris and strongside linebacker Eric Hall on the field.
"I'm ready to take over," Harris said. "We're gonna miss Derrick. But we've learned from him."
Two juniors defensive tackle Rod Wright and safety Michael Huff of Irving Nimitz have said they are contemplating a jump to the NFL and will make a decision in the next few weeks.
Kicker Dusty Mangum of Mesquite also moves on and will be replaced by junior David Pino.
Texas coach Mack Brown was asked if next year's team has a chance to be even better than this year's team.
"We lose some guys who have been pretty special to the University of Texas," Brown said. "But if our other guys can pull tight and become a team like this one was, we have a chance. Sometimes you don't have to have the best players, just the best team."

LONGHORNS
Friday, October 7, 2005
Q&A with Suzanne Halliburton
Q. Will you explain the zone read offense?
A. Texas implemented this offense in the middle of the 2003 season, a week
after they lost to Oklahoma.
The quarterback lines up in the shotgun with only one running back beside him.
Before handing off, the quarterback looks to the defensive end or outside
linebacker. If the outside guys are focusing more on him, the quarterback
hands the ball off. If the defender commits to the inside, the quarterback
keeps the ball and runs around the outside.
Texas since has added more wrinkles to the play to make the defenses guess
that it's going a certain way. The best way to beat the zone read is to blitz
players from angles the quarterback isn't anticipating. OU did that a year ago
in shutting out the Longhorns.
My money's on the Horns against OU this weekend.

Today is huge.
Texas faces Colorado in the Big 12 Championship.
Texas is number 2 in the nation.
Then, following that game, USC number 1 takes on UCLA number 11.
And the Heisman trophy winner is between Vince Young (Texas) and Leinert and Bush of USC.
It all starts at noon, CST on ABC tv.

The National Champion Texas Longhorn football team starts practice today.
si.com:
Texas fans expect a battle between freshmen Colt McCoy and Jevan Snead, and they'll get one. It will just start in secrecy and could take a while to develop into a full-blown duel.
Brown has already named McCoy, who redshirted last season, as No. 1 heading into Monday's drills. He wants to give Snead, who was still in high school in December, time to mature.
Snead will get his chance to compete for the job in time for the 2006 season opener, but Brown wants to take him slow.
"It would be unfair to throw Jevan out there immediately because he's only been in school a month. We do want him to be able to relax," Brown said. "Jevan's never taken a snap here. Colt's been here six months."

Well the Horns are out in the second round of the NCAA basketball tournament. They made to the top 32 but couldn't get to the sweet 16. There's a slight chance Kevin Durant will be back next year, but more likely the national player of the year will be NBA bound.
