F-Prot -- This freeware client is slightly quicker than VirusScan and does a better job of catching and removing viruses. Like VirusScan, it is updated regularly to keep up with new viruses. It also includes extensive help documentation. Its only negative aspect is the fact that it is a DOS application. As a result, F-Prot can't run in the background and lacks the cool interface that VirusScan has. There is, however, a professional version of F-Prot available for Windows. Pros: Quick and extremely efficient virus scanner; cleans and removes many, many viruses Cons: DOS-based application, can't run in the background New: New viruses detected and removed including Burger, Asparagus, Brownie, Mushroom, and Lunch Time Version Reviewed: 2.23a Date of Review: 6/24/96 Reviewer: Forrest Stroud

Does the VIRSTOP tsr work in Windows 95. It works very well in DOS/WIN31, because we have caught at least two virus's this way.

I have used several versions of F-Prot, and have never found any of them to work under any version of Windows. It is a DOS program, to my knowlege, and works very well, in my experience.

I had a heck of a time trying to download it a few months ago, but not from Forrest's site. I need to make another run at it.

I use F-prot (last I remember 2.19a) for Windows as a better than most virus protection with Windows style "gatekeeper" windows heap of virus signatures which chews a lot less of the lower memory than DOS style virus protection set-ups. The last DOS mode version I know of was 2.16 which admittedly worked, but was really a DOS program working under windows. The new ones are fully windows based. I'm not sure what the shareware/freeware level is since I am a registered corporate liscensee (we paid for it so don't count)

F-Prot scanning technology is also used in VirusNet 95, which supports Windows 95, Windows NT, Windows 3.x and DOS. It includes a Windows interface and background VxD protection in Win95.

I teach and have colleagues/students whose PC's are often afflicted with viruses. F-Prot - the free DOS version - is great to have lying around on a clean floppy when you discover your hard drive is infected. The Windows-based AV programs on your infected drive can't handle the situation and you can't install a working AV program on an infected drive, so a Windows Start-Up Disk and F-Prot ( latest free version still fits on a single floppy) clean floppies make clean-up easy.
