DynamIP is a completely free multi-functional internet utility. Its four major features include an IP chat engine (like using IRC, but without the need for an IRC server), IP scanning (especially useful for posting your dynamic IP address to web pages), background e-mail monitor (periodically checks for new mail on up to 5 different mailboxes), and a time synchronization tool (synchronizes your PC clock with the correct Internet time by connecting with an NTP server). DynamIP's IP scanning feature is most useful for those whose internet address frequently changes (especially for those without dedicated lines). DynamIP will post your dynamic address to web pages and then automatically upload those files via FTP. The client also supports up to five connections for those with multiple internet providers. With DynamIP's chat feature, you can input a range of IP addresses to scan and the client will find any users within those numbers that are also using DynamIP. You can then send messages to all of these users or to a specific user. DynamIP presents a solid selection of configurable options for each of its features and does so with an intuitive, easy to use interface. Additional features include its ability to run minimized in the Windows 95 icon tray in order to reduce taskbar clutter, tracking capabilities of all events and actions in a log file for your later use, event notification (customizable sounds to alert you when a new event occurs), AutoSense (keeps DynamIP fron running mail checks when you're not connected), and AutoRefresh (gets new IP addresses for you after a disconnect or redial). DynamIP is a multi-threaded 32-bit application that will only run on Windows 95/NT platforms; for those with dynamic addresses running either of these two operating systems, DynamIP is an excellent app to have. Pros: Dynamic IP scanning, solid background mail checking with multiple mailbox support, very versatile Cons: Mainly of use only to those with dynamic IP addresses, lacks ability to download incoming mail Version Reviewed: 2.6 Date of Review: 10/30/96 For the latest information on DynamIP, check out: http://www.stroud.com/95win.html#dynamip

Thanks for alerting us to this app!

I looked at their web page http://www-leland.stanford.edu/~cmu/DynamIPsetup.htm#requirements and it has some very detailed technical information about how all this works. I'm very curious about how DynamIP will post your dynamic address to web pages and then automatically upload those files via FTP. I'd be interested in hearing from Forrest, from the users of this software and from the authors about this feature. What are some examples of how this is being used? I'd suggest you look at their web page before downloading this as there are quite a few caveats and requirements that you need to know about before using this app. As far as getting your time from your isp, don't. Get it from the Naval Observatory. I wouldn't trust some geek at your neighborhood isp with having the right system time. Would you? Of course, if I'm wrong and DynamIP does get your time from a more reputable source than your local isp, then I stand corrected. If you want the time, get Netdate v2.02 for Win32 by Steeve McCauley. It's free and it snatches the time from the Naval Observatory. http://www.cam.org/~oneguy for Netdate.
~Yuckster #3
Look at http://www.missouri.edu/~c640902 for an example of what happens. It only uploads the html file that you want updated. It reads the HTML file and replaces a set of dummy variables you specify. In my case, it replaces NOT.ON.LINE.NOW (in both places) with my IP address. The last updated date is a dummy variable replaced each time DynamIP uploads. The time updater defaults to a naval server, I think.

Greetings all! I've been tinkering around with DynamIP too. I had all the bugs worked out untill I relocated the directory and somehow lost some of those *.ocx files. Oh well, I should be able to fix that up tomorrow. Terry; You ask how this is being put to use? I use it for CoolTalk so that I don't have to be logged into a server. That way it kinda limits the number of folks calling me. Too many people call and I can always change the URL and give it out to family and such. One feature that I wish it had is a feature I found in a similar program called "OnLine" version 1.9. It does the same basic thing as DynamIP does but has nothing near the power of DynamIP. The feature it has is a thing called "NetNote". I think it is like a small builtin html/www server. Someone comes to my online page, types a message into a form field, submits, and they get a new web page loaded. I get the message and a spot to reply. My reply is sent the the new web page that the sender received when he/she submited the form. Very neat! I like it so much because my daughter is sometimes very limited on what she can do on the internet by her step-father. When she is allowed to use the browser only, NetNote gives us the ability to still chat somewhat. Does anyone know if there is an app that I can set up to do the same thing with DynamIP? If I didn't make myself very clear about the NetNote, you can check it out at http://www.4dcomm.com/~rrhubott/rhusoft.html My online page is located at url http://www.gnt.net/~parsonsj/online.html Keep in mind that if I haven't fixed my DynamIP yet then you'll see the screen from OnLine v1.9. Take care all. JP

I thought you might be interested in this information. btw - I'm just another user of this product. ***Quote*** I'm very curious about how DynamIP will post your dynamic address to web pages and then automatically upload those files via FTP. It then uploads the output file to your web site. You can see an example on my personal webpage at http://edge.edge.net/~billmeek/ . Click on the link "Is Bill Online???". I work for an Internet Service provider, and many times I will leave my computer logged in from home with both my FrontPage web server and my ftp server running. I am constantly getting and sending files from my office to my home system, and this app makes it far easier to check what my IP address is. It's not unknown for my system to drop it's connection, (we have a 1 hour no activity time-out), and when the redialer kicks in my IP address will change. This way I don't have to go fishing through our connect logs to see what my number is. I just check out my web page kept on our main server. I kave placed a link from my home page to the DynamicIP default page, (Which I have modified), and from there you can visit my little web server. If anyone has any interest, my URL is http://www.empire.net/~traveler

Howdie All, I'm running DynamIP 2.4 and have had some problems with one thing. First of all, I've got two ports on this machine. One is a dial-up connection to my ISP via 28.8k USR Sportster. This port has the dynamically assigned IP Number that I want to have posted remotely. I also have a second port connected to our local LAN via 10mb Ethernet. This port has a static internal IP Number of 200.0.0.11 My WebSite & FtpServer are running on a remote Local LAN machine at 200.0.0.12 I am running WinGate on my local computer, so when users connect to my IP Address, they come in through the modem connected to my machine and get transferred over the Ethernet to my secondary "Server Machine". Well, I update two (2) remote web pages with DynamIP. One is at GeoCities and this one is first in succession. This is the page that users connect to from the Internet. I also update a simple .TXT file on the remote server at 200.0.0.12 on my local lan. This text file gets used to display my current IP Number to people that are viewing my WebSite. Well, if I leave DynamIP up and running for an extended period of time, I seems to revert to the IP Number of the Ethernet port on my pc. Every time this has happened, I've been away from my computer for more than an hour or so... I have no idea why this happens, but when I get home, I see the remote page at GeoCities showing my current IP Number as 200.0.0.11, which of course nobody will ever be able to get to... :) What I'm suspecting is happening, is that GeoCities is down for a few moments. At that time, DynamIP is "autosensing"... And from what I can tell, DynamIP gets the current IP Number by pinging the remote host, then pulling the IP Number out of the response packet from the ping. Well, when DynamIP can't get to GeoCities, it tries to ping the second remote host and promptly gets a response from my "secondary server" on the local LAN. This response packet comes back via the Ethernet port with the IP of 2 0.0.0.11 So, up until this time, I've left DynamIP in my DUN AutoStart (via Dunce), and let it run the first time, then I just close it down. It's still ran by Dunce if I get disconnected and it re-connects automatically. But if I'm not arround, after about 4-5 hours or so, it re-posts my IP to GeoCities as 200.0.0.11 I would realy like to just leave the thing up and running full time, but have not figured out a solution to this. If anyone else has had a similar problem, please let me know if you found a way arround it... Thanks! -Todd W. Powers N8WEI n8wei@ix.netcom.com http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Park/4761

Hey, can anybody help me with this stupid DynamIP It always gives me errors!
~CyberDoc #9
Ok, when I am having a problem with DynamicIP v2.6. When I run the program, and then click on the menu Setup, when I try to do any of those options, it comes up with "Runtime error 3107, error loading from file" Please help me out!
~terry #10
I emailed the nice Finnish folks at Dynamip about your queries. Hopefully, help is on the way!
~cmu #11
Kory Grandy's problem has been solved. Please check out the detailed information available on the DynamIP trouble-shooting page. Chris (I'm Swiss BTW; Hellu is Finnish ;-) )

Help! I attempted to install DynamIP but without success. I dl MS control tools beta2 and dl DynamIP v2.6 as well as v2.7. According to the programmer web page the controls package should come w/the *.ocx files but upon executing dynamip it kept requesting these files. I also dl several of them ftpct.ocx, richtx32.ocx, winsck.ocx, etc and used the regsvr32.exe but received an error when doing so. Can anyone help me?
~cmu #16
Harmony, MS ICP beta2 might have trouble installing some of the controls (*.ocx files) if they are in use. It's definitely a good idea to shut down all the other programs before you install the MS ICP. If the normal installation process is not able to register the controls and you can't register them manually either, then you might have to delete the appropriate registry entries, reboot Windows, delete the *.ocx files, and finally try to reinstall the ICP again. Problems with the ICP beta 2 are really out of my control, but most people get it to work after some trying ;-) If DynamIP reports other missing files, then you can get them from http://www.stanford.edu/~cmu/DynamIPsetup.htm#installationtrouble. Chris
~terry #17
Please explain exactly how you"delete the appropriate registry entries"; this may be cryptic to a new user. I'm glad you have a missing files area!
~ordred #18
I'm using DynamIP to update my web page and especially like the tutorial that allowed me to set up my web page to automagically allow NetMeeting calls. Using Dunce and RoboDun, my total suite of 'net clients is loaded with a single click while the interaction of DynamIP and Dunce allows me to shut everything down when I close DynamIP. This is a powerful set of utilities! Give me a call at http://www.infocom.net/~ordred

According to the Help facility, "As soon as you start DynamIP it figures out whether you're connected to the Internet or not." As soon as I start it, it just sits there with "Disconnected" showing in the lower left hand corner. I've double checked that the Internet Control Pack is installed, and all DynamIP files are in place. Earlier errors indicated I had to download richtx32.ocx, and then comctl32.ocx, and run regsrv32 to get them in the registry; but now DynamIP just sits there dumbly with no error in ication. Any chance the problem is that I've installed DynamIP on my D: drive, while \windows\system is on C:? I wouldn't expect this to be a problem, and have successfully installed quite a few apps this way. Note that I'm a career software professional who even remembers when this was the arpanet, but this one has me baffled. I'm obviously connected, else how did I post this? Has anyone else seen/solved this one?
~cmu #20
John, The "Disconnected" in the lower left corner (which is called left pane of the status bar) means only that currently none of the DynamIP services has established a connection. If you're connected then DynamIP shows your current IP address in the top left field (just to the left of the button "Refresh IP". For this to happen you must define at least 1 active connection handle or 1 active POP mail acccount. If you're not connected DynamIP will say so in the 2nd field from the top just below the IP field (which should say 127.0.0.1). Hope that helps, Chris
~ment #21
Chris, In regard to your message to Harmony about deleting registry entries. Can you suggest where to look for these entries? I'm having trouble registering the .ocx's and don't have enough knowledge to tackle the registry on my own. Please, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Chris Lawson
~cmu #22
Chris, Editing the registry is only for "advanced" users. Before you attempt playing around with the registry you should definitely make a BACKUP of your registry files (you might have to reinstall Windows if things go badly wrong!!!). You might also want to read a bit about the registry at http://www.creativelement.com/win95ann/registry.html. I might also add some more info to the DynamIP site. Chris
~csaba #23
Hey Chris! Nice product, but.... It goes as follows: 1. I lose connection to my ISP. 2. DynamIP turns purple, displays localhost address 127.0.0.1 3. RAS reials and gets connected. 4. DynamIP reports "Run Time Error 1048 Address in use" Have to click o.k. then restart it. This error just kills the automatic reconnect functionaly. Happens every time without exception. Any ideas? Platform NT4.0 WKS, everything else works fine. Csaba
~Franck #24
This application is probably nice but I really couldn't get around the installation : could never register these damn ocx files, and I tried a lot of things (I have been playing in computers for a long time and I know what I am doing) All that it did finally is that there is a missing dll in my system windows dir required at the startup of w95 : msvcirt.dll I cannot find it on my desktop PC, where by luck I didnt try to install this software, anyone could send it to me as an attachment ? thanx in advance molinf@crhsc.umontreal.ca
~cmu #25
Csaba: Error 1048 (address in use) is currently unresolved. It should affect people with multiple IP addresses on their system (e.g. static LAN plus a dynamic dial-up). Frank: It is not quite obvious from your post which part of the installation is causing problems. A precondition for running DynamIP is that you can successfully install Microsoft's ICP beta 2. There are unfortunately quite a few issues with that installation pack, and one thing you could try is to delete all registry entries refering to controls that come with the ICP (check out the DynamIP home page for more info. Once you've installed these controls there are only 4 more controls left that shouldn't be too hard to install manually. My apologies for causing grief on your side, but I doubt that installing DynamIP deleted any files on your machine. Happy Thanksgiving to all, Chris
~terry #26
Happy Thanksgiving to you too, Chis and thanks for participating in our conference. We encourage your continued presence here.

I need help If you've read the info regarding DynamIP's future you know that I will be moving away from the MS ICP. Right now I'm looking for a file called "WININET.BAS" with declarations for all the functions/constants available in "WININET.DLL". I do have the C++ header file "WININET.H", but manual conversion seems painful. Please drop me a line if you have the file or know where I can get it from. Thanks in advance, Chris
~hankus #28
I appreciate the freeware, that you're not a professional DynamIP programmer, and that you're continuing to search for WININET.BAS, Chris, but I believe that amongst the bigger fans of your fine app, we could get a groundswell to collect the $250 to get you a nice, shiny new toolbox for xmas (or the spring, when you need it!). We're not rich, but it'd be worth it. Anyone else out there care to jump on this contingency bandwagon? -Hankus
~cmu #29
Thanks to all of you who e-mailed me hints/tips for WinINet.dll. I have the most important stuff converted and it's working. Still some work to do in order to get the TCP/IP stuff working. Chris PS: Hankus, money is not the issue. However, I'm strongly opposed to the strategy of giving away beta controls (MS!!!) and then gauge those who built on them (NetManage). I don't blame anybody but myself for using the controls in the first place, but I'm surely not throwing any money at either company and reward them for this approach. We've got time until March and things are moving along on my side...
~pbb #30
Dynamip is to me a very usefull application. One of its attractions was its use of ICP, as i'm doing programming in VB4 + ICP myself. I quite agree with you Chris, regarding your feelings toward MS/NetManage, although I am at the moment considering paying up the 250$ ! I think this Beta looked promising.... I will be very interested in your experiences with WinINet.dll, and would appreciate any hints or links, if you find that this package covers your needs. I think your work with DynamIP, and your web support pages, is great and I look forward to following the progress. It is though, a minor concern that i haven't been able to find your site (www-leland.stanford.edu) for several days ?! Preben
~pantera #31
First off, a thank you to Chris for writing this fine piece of software. Now for the punch line. The one and only problem that I've got with DymanIP is the memory foot-print that it has on the system. One day I was curious as to how much memory each of the programs that I run take up. So I started up Norton System Information (from the Norton Utilities) and saw that DynamIP was the largest user of memory on my system, taking up a whopping 6+ megs of memory. Just to clarify, I love what this program does, but I was just wondering Chris, if there was any way you could trim down the amount of system resources that this "utility" program uses. Yes, it does a lot, but say a person (such as myself) is running their system with 32 megs of ram. DynamIP thens takes up close to 20% of the physical memory just to monitor email and update their web page with the dynamic IP address. Personally I hate on-line chat, so that's pretty useless to me, but the other stuff is really nice, especially the system tray icon. Sorry for the rant, but since I don't know what's in your head, I have no idea if you even know about this problem. I realize fully that this is a spare time project and that you receive no compensation for doing it, but if you could figure out this memory foot-print problem, then you surely will gain some amazing experience in programming in doing it. Later, Jim

I have installed DynamIP on my computer with no problems. My father and I are using it mainly to be able to find each other when we are both online. My father is having a strange problem where his IP number is listed for 2 min then the box below turns purple and the default IP comes up for 30 sec. After which the correct IP comes back up by itself. The problem with this is that while the box remains purple he can type in the chat box but when he tries to send it will not. After the correct IP comes back u he is then able to hit return and send the waiting text. He is not using any of the Online Offline FTP or HTTP functions and has that disabled. He only uses the Mail POP function and Chat. Any suggestions out there. We both really like the program, but would like to resolve this one problem. Thanks for and help Steven nfn00805@gator.naples.net
~SergeAhead #33
I would like to echo the problem that Steven Whitney expressed regarding the Rapid Onset of the Purple Plague. However, in my case our ISP has lost/misplaced/disabled FTP altogether. The DynamIP log files appear to indicate that FTP is tried and fails then a connection to my POP server occurs. Since the IP address is resolved frequently the purple box appears to be related to the check of my POP server and loss of FTP. Disabling FTP kills the Autosense process altogether. Pointing to some other FTP site fails the autosense test also. Given that not everyone has an ISP-provided FTP (ie, web page hosting elsewhere) this appears to be a problem. Is there another way to establish a user's IP address without requiring FTP via the local ISP? Well, obviously there is, but how does that affect the rest of DynamIP? Thanks for the ability to comment (and your willingness to listen) on your excellent, personal gone public, software, Chris! Billy (aka SergeAhead aka EvenKeel aka Nancy aka Billy :)
~swhitney #34
Billy Colemans comments about the purple box in responce to my message, reminded me that the reason my dad has the online, offline, ftp functions disabled is because his account is purely POP. He has no shell account to which he can upload any files. I do not have the problem and do have a shell account which I have set up. If I remember correctly when I first started using DynamIP I did have the problem and it cured itself when I got the FTP Online and Offline straightened out. Thanks again for any help Steven
~SteveMarshall #35
First off, a thank you to Chris for writing this fine piece of software. I am running DynamIP on a Windows 95 machine along with a FTP server and WinGate. I want all my local users to be able to connect to internet FTP sites through WinGate so I have set up WinGate to listen on Port 21. I have set up my FTP server to listen on Port 22. The question I have is there a way to get DynamIP to reflect this port in the FTP address that it posts to my homepage. Thanks in advance... //Steve//
~cmu #36
Hi all, In this message I'm gonna try to address a bunch of questions/concerns: -------pbb-------- I'm confident that I can do without paying $250 to NetManage. I've made good progress with my own controls and the basic functionality of DynamIP is working without loading any controls of the ICP. I think I'll be able to release a beta version sometime in February that will do w/out ICP alltogether... I'm not in charge of the Stanford WWW server and since they keep my pages free of charge I'm not really in a position to complain about you not being able my pages. Things are usually a bit slow early in the morning (PST) when they do their updates, but other than that I've found them to be quite reliable... ---------pantera------------ I'm aware of the memory hogging issue. Let me blame it on the ICP (things are better in my current alpha version that does w/out the ICP)... ---------swhitney---/----SergeAhead-------- DynamIP keeps a live connection to either an FTP server or a POP server. That was the only "easy" way to figure out whether a connection exists or not using ICP. This will (hopefully) be changed with my own controls, but for the time being you want to connect to a server that doesn't disconnect you too quickly after you established a connection (POP servers usually kick you within a few minutes, FTP servers let you hang around for quite a while). DynamIP "turns purple" when the connection is lost until a ew one is established. The "Purple Plague" (I like the name ;-) ) is on my "to do" list, but solving the "ICP desease" is currently more urgent. Thanks for your understanding. -------SteveMarshall-------- Instead of using the built-in functionality to generate a FTP (or HTTP)-link on your web page you can add the link in your template and put the IP dummy as a place holder for your IP address. E.g. you could have the following in your template (look at the source of this page to see the html code...): http://NOT.ON.LINE.NOW/AnyPage.htm When DynamIP updates the template it will also replace the string "NOT.ON.LINE.NOW" with your current IP address and the link will work. The FTP link works pretty much the same. Please refer to any good HTML reference for further details... All right. I wish you all Happy Holidays, Chris

I'm using dynamic option to my PPP connnection to the ISP. Each time I connect, I'm given different IP. So - after disconnecting from my ISP - I always have to start a new session of IE in order for it to be able to find addresses... Will installing DynamIP help me with this problem?
~cmu #38
Peter, DynamIP will NOT solve your particular problem. Chris

Hello I am having the same problem with the Internet Control Pack not being able to register the .ocx files. This is apparently a common problem with the Beta2 of this software because it was the first item listed in the FAQ I found for the software. Apparently the registry update information in Beta2 is for a different format version of the windows registry than some of us have. There was a .reg file update but it was for WinNT and doesn't work on my windows95. So what I am asking is for anyone who has the Beta2 installed in windows 95 to export the "license" part of their registry that has the info for the .ocx files in it and email to me so I can import it into mine. From what I read this should fix it.. I will post in here and let everyone know if it works or not. My email address is jbeets@intellisys.net Thanks Jon Beets jbeets@intellisys.net

Paul, I don't really have time to write a case study. However, I'm happy to compile one if people e-mail me their stories. Also, I wanted to thank everybody who e-mailed me bug reports for v3.0 beta 1. I just uploaded beta 2. You can get it from http://www-leland.stanford.edu/~cmu/DynamIPdownload.htm. The bad news is that my motherboard blew up today and it will take a while until I'm back up and running again (Manhattan, as it turns out, is a true wasteland if it comes to computers; it's impossible to find the right stuff...). Please don't overreact if I'm offline for a while ;-) Cheers, Chris

I love DynamIP! Well I did until v3. I got beta2 installed and everything works (with the old .ini file) until I try to see what's new and dare to click on Setup followed by ANYTHING. CRASH! Included is a note about "appropriate licence.../Error 429". I did EVERYTHING that the trouble-shooting page recommends. After deregistering the 5 controls the only references to the controls was one each under "shared DLLs". I deleted the registry keys (Windows still works! and I know how to put these keys back). I reregistered the controls. Result? Nochange! Help!
~webb #50
I really have gotten a lot of use out of Dynamip and enjoy using it. Unfortunatly I have exactly the same problem with v3b2 as Ed Moskal (error 429). I tried the recommended fixes with no sucess. Is it possible that the error message is correct and that I don't have an appropriate license? I don't own visual basic. Help!

The only good news from the last message is that I am not alone.

I'm having the same problem. I also had problems with the tcp ocx in the full zip file, but then downloaded the tcp ocx by istelf zip and noticed it had a different file date. It worked. Can't look at settings however. -- jacklail

Try DynamIP v3.0 beta 3. It comes with an installation program that should solve most of the above mentioned problems... Chris
~emmoskal #54
Thank you Chris. Beta 3 seems to have solved all my problems. Now to look at the WebChat feature. Thanks again. I love this little program!
~terry #55
Can folks share some examples of how they use this program?
~renzo #56
After much juggling, hair pulling and finally installing the last beta... IT WORKS!!!! Thankx Cris, for putting so much effort into to this program... Now I can use it as a pager off of my web boards...Thankx again -renzo
~cmu #57
Get DynamIP v3.0 beta 4 (solves a whole bunch of problems). It's available here. PS: My apologies for another huge download, but there was another small problem in cmuTCP.ocx
~terry #58
Thanks Christoph. I'm still hoping we get some good examples of how users are utilizing this program. Some real world examples would be great!
~renzo #59
one can be found here, also if ya dig around in the site you'll find it in place on a couple of weboards...
~renzo #60
oops pasted in the wrong link, sorry try this one instead...

I've just gotten Ver. 3.0b4 installed. I'm pretty sure I've done it right. After startup (the app) it uploads and then quits. Any ideas? I've gone over the troble shooting tips more than once. I didn't see the solution there. I would really like to get this going so as to porvide access to my FTP and WEB server at home.
~terry #62
What is the url going to be of your webserver? Or root ip? I added a dynamip address to our list of users last night. Any more dynamip of participants here? Any other folks want to be listed?
~BC #63
I use DynamIP to post MY WEB and FTP server IP address on to my home page at my ISP site. From there you can click on the link to my home computer. My local URL is phill2.bills.net. (1.2.3.1) This is only good for my local network, but any others can access from the internet using my dynamic address. It really does work. Check it out. I got Ver 3.0b4 to work, for the most part. It won't run with the IPchat or HTTP scan.
~terry #64
I'll check out http://www.pacifier.com/~bchurch

DynamIP: 5 stars!, 5 Cows!, 2 thumbs up!
~kennethp #66
I've installed V3.0B5 and everything appears to work fine after moving a few of the ocx files to system directory and registering them. My question is concerning the interface. It does not match that of the one displayed on your web page. Everything to the right of the refresh IP button does not exist. The alignment of the numbers for the mail portion are half way covering the envelope button and the red or green line under each connection are probably only one pixel thick. I am not sure if this is the wa it is supposed to be or if it supposed to look like what is on your web page. By the way it was the same way when i had beta 4. Any suggestions?
~henryr #67
I just installed V3b6 and this is the best thing since sliced bread! I really like the WebChat. Very Cool. I agree 2 thumbs up, 5 stars, 5 cows, 5 whatever's...The best.
~montgom #68
Using 3.0b6. Nice. How do I get it to update my webpage (or does it) excpet when I log on and log off? is it supposed to update my IP while on? Bob
~cmu #69
Please do not bother with old betas. Get DynamIP v3.0 beta 8 from here. This latest beta fixes lots of problems, especially under NT. Also, it would be nice if somebody with a static IP address could convince Stroud to change his mind: he still thinks that DynamIP is mainly of use to those with a dynamic IP address. Good counter-examples are WEBchat, IPchat, POP check, etc. which all work just fine on a LAN... Thanks to all of you who contributed to the 5 "golden" cows from TUCOWS. To those of you who can't get DynamIP to upload their web page anymore, please read the docu about the new DEL switch (you can choose between overwriting and delete/put). For some people, either setting will work - others must choose one or the other (it all depends on the FTP server you're uploading to...) Chris PS: How do people like the new DynamIP web site? Appealing, useful, garbage, or what?
~SergeAhead #70
Chris, Thumbs up on the "new and improved" web site! The kids all think that the music Dad 'listens' to is strange though ! Personally, I find it strangely appealing ... Regarding the use of DynamIP with a static IP ... My wife and I have used DynamIP from a very early edition to communicate between the office (static IP, EvenKeel) and the house (dynamip ... uh, dynamic IP :). I found that it saved a lot on the local long distance bill for those "Hey, would you mind picking up ..." type of calls. Besides, with homeschooling the two oldest and the three younger ones running about, sometimes she just needed some quick support. I also liked the ability to use the web page to access my home computer to retrieve files that I needed for work (or send files home for working late at night :) With the changes in the 3.0 versions, I can now take advantage of the email checking and time sync at the ofice without having yet another app to run. In fact, if I were able to track down the RT6 failure when I fail to respond to the WebChat, I would use the auto-online feature to enable chat for non-DynamIP users. Just a few comments ... I _really_ do admire your efforts at growing this program and yet still maintaining it as freeware. I have considered recommending it to my ISP as software to include in their New User Package. Billy
~Larson #71
DynamIP doesn't seem to obtain an IP when I go online. It creates and uploads the html file to my www site, but the IP address is blank. The DynamIP window displays nothing where there should be an IP address. To the right of that field is a bit "D" with green background. Selecting "Refresh IP" does nothing. Other applications seem to be able to get my IP address (in particular, when I go to My Computer, select the properties for my connection icon, then look at Server Type and TCP/IP settings, it sh ws my current IP address. I have a dynamic IP address (changes with every connection). When I look at the log file, there is a line that says: 2/15/97/11:39:02 AM: IP : (IP address is blank here, too). Is there a known problem in getting an IP address with some servers? I have a LARGE ISP (University of Minnesota). Would this make a difference? I once copied a program from a book which was supposed to obtain my IP address, but it had the same problem -- couldn't get it. And yet, I know there are applications which can get it just fine. So, could there be some little-known manner in which an IP address might be obtained? Thanks
~cmu #72
First a "thank you" to Billy. I'm glad you think DynamIP's getting better. Greg has hit on an issue that needs to be resolved on my side: currently, DynamIP can only determine your IP address if you establish a PPP connection. There's nothing broken, it's been designed like this. However, I do understand that some people use other protocols, and I'm working on a solution. Chris
~BC #73
FTP ERROR Template not found. What is this? Template names and locations are as they should be. Any hints?
~emmoskal #74
After being away for a bit, I've discovered that beta 3 has gone to beta 8. Wow, better than ever! For those who want to know how I use this: My family are all over the place but most have access to the Web. Web chat makes a nice, simple way to say hello. I've retired as a professor but still teach occasionally. Since I'm not regularly in an office but students may still want to discuss something, they can simply see if I'm on line and then immediately get in touch using my IP address and some kind of communication software ( such as DynamIP). This is getting too long! Thanks again Chris.
~terry #75
What's your url there?
~cmu #76
Great that even a "Prof" is using DynamIP . Thx for the kudos! Anyway, just wanted to let everybody know that DynamIP v3.0 beta 9 is out. This latest beta should fix most of the problems that were reported with beta 8. Furthermore, I enabled the last batch of options I've been working on: - DialOnDemand for user selectable dial-up connection - Hide the annoying "Connected to" window - template for WEBchat (for those who don't like yellow...) - enhanced algorithm to determine IP address (should now also work with a bunch of newer devices like cable modem, etc.) - lots of little things If you have at least beta 3 installed you can download the upgrade to beta 9 which is only 135KB. Please follow the installation instructions available at http://DynamIP.home.ml.org/DynamIPinstallation.htm Enjoy, Chris
~terry #77
Well, I just downloaded the newest version and I'll be looking at this from the user's viewpoint. The three part install went fairly well. What solutions are folks using to stay connected. What is the reocmmended solution Christoph for staying connected. I've been using RAS+95 which is supposed to run on NT. Are you providing NT and RAS+95 support? Are these compatible apps or do you plan to provide this functionality within Dynamip?
~MaxHS #78
First, thanks for writing DynamIP. On top of that, making it FREEWARE! I am using v3.0b9. Install without a hitch. However, istead of FTP to my webpage, my web page is mapped network drive (F:). I setup the "Local File" to to be the mapped drive directory and left the FTP remote host as default. This way it will write the html file to the web server. However, now I always get an FTP Error when it tries to "upload" the html file. Although this is only a cosmetic problem, I still get satisfactory results, is there a way around this? -- Max S
~cmu #79
DynamIP v3.0 beta10 is out. Get it from here. This is the first beta that reveals the new user interface. Some other new features are: - enhanced DialOnDemand (should answer Paul's question) - Toolbar - built in support for (re)dial - several bug fixes Chris PS: The final release of DynamIP will allow you to update the local file only (which should solve Max S's problem).
~terry #80
How about NT 4.0 compatibility?
~cmu #81
I'm on NT4 ;-) (the problem is NT3.51 where some functionality is not available [e.g. Tray]) Chris
~terry #82
Good to hear it. Now, since my RAS+95 expired to figure out how to get it to dial up and keep me connected to my isp. Any shortcut tips on how to do this.
~kwiebe #83
Hello, Just a note to say that all appears to be well in the refresh department now. I didn't really change anything - it just started working! What I think happened is, you know how when you're testing something and you have run through umpteen different configurations, all to no avail, then you reboot a few times and come back to it fresh, and it works? I think that's what happened. If I had started out with the configuration settings I finally settled on, it probably would have worked all along. I just had several stops along the way before I finally got there. Thanks for a fine program, and thanks for your attentiveness in trying to solve my phantom problem! Cheers! Ken Wiebe
~kwiebe #84
Well, I just posted a followup (#83) to my post about refresh not working, but I don't see my original post. #83 doesn't make much sense without the original post, FYI. Anyway, Cheers!
~cmu #85
Hi all, I've had some connectivity problems myself. If you sent me e-mail between 25-March-97 and 29-March-97 and haven't received a reply, please resend your message to cmu@bigfoot.com. DynamIP v3.0 beta 11 is out. Please READ the Readme.txt file BEFORE you install it (it will upgrade lots of controls on your computer...). You can get it from http://DynamIP.home.ml.org/DynamIPdownload.htm. The DynamIP home page is at http://DynamIP.home.ml.org/. As I'll be moving back to California between 2 April and 7 April I won't reading my mail during that time (and therefore you won't get any replies either). Happy Easter to everybody, Chris
~pwmeek #86
On Pent Pro 200 dual proc; winnt4.0ws 1381 sp2, v30b11 seems to be working. I did the install to a machine that had never had DynamIP installed. I copied all local files (that I had) which were in the file "Setup.lst" to a new folder on another drive. It turned out that everything still works, so the effort has to be considered as cost of insurance. If I understood the Spring/yapp instructions correctly, this link should work for anyone who would like to see what it looks like or to test their IPchat feature. Check to see if I'm on-line Thanks, Chris, for a useful app. --Pete
~hphuong #87
Yet another use for DynamIP --------------------------- Besides using DynamIP v3.0b11 to post my IP address to a WebPage for Internet Phone purposes, I am also using it in conjunction with Craig Lauer's NotifyMail program (http://www.notifymail.com) to get instantaneous e-mail notifications. This eliminates the need for programs like Eudora, Pegasus, MS Exchange, etc. to constantly poll the POP3 servers for new mail. One of the requirements of NotifyMail was a "full (shell) account on a UNIX or VMS machine running a POP server AND a static IP address." Well with DynamIP, you no longer need to have a static IP address because you can now just post your address when you first connect and remove your address when you disconnect from DUN/RAS. After a few hours of tinkering, everything works flawlessly now! You can e-mail me if you have any problems setting this up. Suggestions ----------- Chris, the only complaint that I have with the product is its memory usage (Norton SI reports 6.23MB). Here are some suggestions that I have thought up that might help improve the product: - since people are not always configuring the application when they run it, you can probably improve on it's memory usage by breaking DynamIP into two applications: DynamIP and a Setup program. - DynamIP would be the exact same as it is now but the Read Configuration & Save Configuration menu items and the Setup menu would be removed. - the Setup program would then consist of a tabbed Dialog-based application that reads/writes the setup information to/from the INI file. - by doing this, you can eliminate the need for the Tab control (and depending on where you used it, the Rich Text Edit control too) to be loaded into memory. - this alone should result in a savings of about 350 - 400K. - the number of elements on your tab control may also be wasting a lot of memory. If you have separate labels, text edit boxes, check boxes, combo boxes, etc. for each tab then this amounts to a huge waste of memory and resources. You can change this by just having say 20 controls that you would reposition into their appropriate locations when a tab is selected. Of course this is quite difficult to implement and it's complexity might not be worth the hassle. (Please ignore this comment if you are alrea y doing this.) OR as an alternative, might I suggest changing the interface into one that is similar to that of Explorer's or RegEdit's (i.e. a Tree Control and a List View control with a splitter bar in the middle). So, as the user adds more Launch definitions, Uploader information, etc... you can just add more tree branches to your display. Chris, if you have any questions/comments or need clarifications on any of these suggestions, please feel free to contact me at: yu108694@yorku.ca Keep up the good work! -- Hiep
~cmu #88
A quick note to those of you who've been playing around with IE4. When you install IE4 a new version of "wininet.dll" gets installed (v4.71.0544.1). This new version changes the behavior of the FTP engine somewhat (after login a SYST command is issued). If your FTP server doesn't support the SYST command then you might not be able to upload any files anymore because the FTP control aborts if the server doesn't support SYST. DynamIP uses high level commands, i.e. there's no way for me to get around this pr blem (I simply hope that the MS folks are finally getting their act together). Other than that, DynamIP should work fine w/ IE4 (at least it does on my machine). Chris
~cmu #89
DynamIP v3.0 RC1 released. Get DynamIPv3RC1.zip now! Chris
~terry #90
What's hot in the new release, Christoph?
~cmu #91
..hmmm... fewer bugs? RC1 features an improved dialer/launcher (you can now dial directly from the DynamIP menu up to 3 of your dial-up connections), KeepAlive (generates a bit of traffic every 2 minutes so that your ISP doesn't disconnect you). Chris
~terry #92
What if your isp asks that you disconnect every 4 hours or some interval and then reconnect. Do you handle this?
~cmu #93
DynamIP can handle this with the "Dial with Timer" functionality. You can specify the times (time intervals) you want DynamIP to establish a connection. It's all explained here. My advice would be, however, to sign up with a real ISP and ditch that "LEGO" company... Chris
~terry #94
How does DYNAMIP handle dedicated connections. What advice do you have for folks wanting to connect a subnet of NT and Windows 95 machines to an isp and have each machine maintain an ip address with webservers with virtual webservers?
~lazarus #95
I have only one problem with dynamIP. when i try and change the background or forground colors it allways resets to the default???????? I haven't yet tinkered with the reg file cause that too much trouble fer such alittle thing. any suggestions??

I setup a *.lnk file to start Netscape Mail. That Link file contains the command line: C:\blah blah blah\netscape.exe -mail In DynamIP (RC1) Mail setup, when using the Browse button to point to this link file, it reads the above command line contained in the link file directly into the field once the browse window closes. (It's not supposed to do this, is it?) But it doesn't pull in the command line parameter (i.e, -mail ). If I ignore the Browse button and manually type in the path to the *.lnk file it stays. C:\blah blah blah\NSMail.lnk Works fine now. Is the Browse thing a bug or a feature? ;-) Regards, Marty

I apoligize for the double post. Don't know how I did that.
~Baldguy #99
Another thing I've been meaning to address... Terminal Envelope Roll. When the scheduled POP mail checker kicks in... it doesn't always connect and the envelope icon rolls for what seems like forever. If I force DynamIP to scan for mail while it's in this state, it's usually successful. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 clicks to get it to respond. Any ideas? Regards, Marty
~cmu #100
some comments to messages above #94 Dedicated connections (w/ static IP addresses) are best handled by entering that information manually in Setup|DUN/RAS: - select Static IP address - enter the static IP address Note, however, that DynamIP currently doesn't support proxy servers and the like... #95 I was under the impression that this bug was fixed in RC1. If you have RC1 installed and still can't permanently change fore/back-ground colors, please drop me a line at cmu@bigfoot.com and don't forget to attach all your relevant system info (e.g. what version of Windows (95, 95SR2, NT4, language, etc.). #96 It seems that the file dialog automatically resolves shortcuts (at least it's not something I tried to program; it just happens and I haven't figured out how to prevent it...). Any hints welcome... #99 I'm looking into this right now. I don't think it causes any harm, but something is definitely broken. Thx for the info. Chris
~terry #101
What's next Chris?
~Baldguy #102
Chris is going to get real sick of me...sorry...but I fell in love with this program. :-) Every now and then...when I exit DynamIP...everything that was launched closes, and DynamIP exits normally...at least it appears to. The hard drive will churn for a bit and then DynamIP magically starts up again, connects, and launches everything again. This still happens with RC1. I don't know if it's something I'm inadvertantly doing or what. Regards, Marty
~cmu #103
Marty, This has happened to me too (but only once, so far). Annoying (even though it doesn't cause any harm) - I'll look into it. For the time being, you just have to shut it down again. Chris
~cmu #104
DynamIP v3.0 RC2 released! Get it from the DynamIP home page. Chris
~terry #105
Great. What new features are planned for future releases?
~Woodchuc #106
Many thanks for a great program. However, I seem to have a little problem. When I use auto offline and 'file' 'disconnect' dynamip goes offline and locks up, not the whole computer, just dynamip. If i exit, it logs off and exits correctly. Do you have a fix for this problem, or will I need to not use auto offline and od it manually if I want to keep Dynam open. By the way, it works fine in manual. For reference, I am using win95'B' (sr 2) on a pentium machine. Your help is appreciated. Thanks agai , Woody
~cmu #107
DynamIP v3.0 Final Release is available from http://DynamIP.home.ml.org/. DynamIP v3.0 now supports DIPS, a new and exciting service that allos people to publish web content with a fixed URL from a dynamic IP address. This is great if you're running a web server on your home machine. You can check out all the details about DIPS at http://DIPS.home.ml.org/. Please drop us a line at DIPS@bigfoot.com and tell us how you like this new service. Chris
~terry #108
Cool!
~mep3 #109
I've just installed the new v3.0 release on an Win95 machine (95a) with the MS isdn update 1.1 installed. It seems that the dynamIP installation installed a version of rasapi32.dll over the version that the isdn update loaded (4.00.1150). With this version installed, any attemps to create a dial-up connection would fail with a user/password error (but I could log in using a post-dial-up terminal screen), I was getting random but frequent explorer faults in kernel32 and online file up/down load ftp fail d frequently. Putting the (older?) isdn 1.1 version of rasapi32.dll back seemed to fix these problems. Where did this new version (4.10.1434) of rasapi32.dll come from and why would the newer version cause these problems? Any ideas?
~rage #110
I have just installed DynamIP v.3 and am getting an error '7': Out of Memory when trying to run it. All versions of installed files are the latest, I have installed the file from a clean install of Win95 rev.B. I have 48 megs total RAM and have 593,737 bytes free in lower memory. Pulling all extraneous Windows apps out and leaving only Explorer running still gives the same error. I have redownloaded the file, reinstalled several times and run Reg Clean 4.1. Any suggestions would surely be appreciate . Thanks, Roger
~cmu #111
The new version of rasapi32.dll is included in the Win95 PPTP upgrade. On some systems this new version disables DUN. Hence, it is important that you make a backup copy of your old rasapi32.dll BEORE you install DynamIP so that you can go back to the old version if your Dial-Up Networking doesn't work anymore after installing DynamIP. Alternatively, you can upgrade your DUN to version v1.2 (the PPTP upgrade). Details are available on the DynamIP download page. As for the memory error, I have no idea what could be causing it (I know that DynamIP takes up quite some resources, but not that many...). I'll look into it if I find time. Sorry for the bad news. Chris
~terry #112
Is Dynamip compatible with Symantec's iShare? Have you seen this product? Do you plan on incorporating anything similar into your product (sharing a single Internet connection across several computers using Netbeui)?
~cmu #113
Haven't seen iShare and if DynamIP is compatible with iShare then it's just a lucky coincidence. I have no plans to incorporate Internet sharing capability into DynamIP. We're currently putting a lot of resources into developing DIPS (Dynamic IP Server). You can check it out at http://DIPS.home.ml.org/. DIPS is great if you want to publish web content using a fixed/static URL even though you have a dynamic IP address. We're working on some more cool features, i.e. ch c,k the DIPS pages on a regular basis. Also, we appreciate everybody's input/thoughts about the service. Drop us a line at DIPS@bigfoot.com. Chris
~terry #114
Thanks Christoph, keep us posted on Dynamip's new features. This program is a great service for folks who have dynamic ip access to Internet servers. One problem I see is that a lot of folks may not understand the need for this. But you're doing a good job of educating folks. I'll check out the above url.
~cmu #115
DynamIP v3.01 released. Get it from http://DynamIP.home.ml.org/. Some minor bug fixes (DUN related) and now with full DIPS support. DIPS (Dynamic IP Server) is our new free service that allows people to publish web content from their own computer through a fixed URL even though they are on a dynamic IP address! Detailed information about DIPS is available from http://DIPS.home.ml.org/. Again, support for DynamIP will very reduced until I'm fully installed back in Europe. It would be nice if some you the "insiders" could provide peer support to those who need it right here in this groups. Thanks in advance! Chris

Help! I installed Dynamip 3.01 and I get "system error &H80604065 (-2147467259). unspecified error " whenevver I try to run it. I never installed it before so legacy OCX can't be an issue. I've tried skipping my startup files, and killing everything but explorer in the task list. I have the all the updates to DUN/winsock available from MS, and to W95 for that matter. My DUN works perfectly otherwise. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling, but all it does when I try to start it is a pause then a dia og with that message. Please help! JP P.S. Is this the only source for help? This board wasn't working for a while, and I wonder if during that period ppl gave up on this board.
~terry #118
Nope. We were only down for installaiont of a new hard drive for a few days. We're pretty much been up solid for three years. Usually the dynamip folsk check in. Will you email them and tell them there's some activity here for them please?
~pantaki #119
I've just installed dynamic IP 3.0.1 and I'm having some problems with the uploader. I've verified the ids, paths, passwords etc. and everything is OK. But what happens is it tries to connect and then tells me the connection failed. I experimented a little and put junk in the id and password fields and I got the same error! Is there anyway to see a log of the commands that are getting sent to the ftp server? I suspect it's a timing issue.
~AoNoX #120
Augh! I've just installed the newest ver (new user) of DynamIP and finally figured it out. But NOW when it posts, this is all it ever posts: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DynamI -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Yeah, I know I had to alter some of the tags so I could post... Can anyone tell me where to enter the userid/password for dialing for my PPP connection when using DynamIP to dial? I am not able to connect due to authorization errors - Dunce has a place in the configuration to enter the account information but i cant find it in dynamicIP DUN setup.
~Baldguy #124
Hi Mark, Your userid/password should be entered in the standard Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking dialog for the connection you created for your ISP. (I'm assuming you're using Windows 95) You then tell DynamIP which Dial-Up Networking connections(s) to use. Go into DynamIPsetup - DUN/RAS Set the connection status to "Dynamic IP Address (RAS)" (At least try that one first) Then in the AutoConnect / AutoDisconnect section you can set it use up to 3 of your dial-up networking connections. You don't have to set them all. But whatever you do set, make sure you have checked the box to the left of the connection(s) you've selected. Make sense? Good luck. Marty
~faithkills #125
Ok, this is off topic but related. I got Dynamip working by unregistering and reregistering the ocx's. My problem now is that whenever I setup servers they grab the IP of my ethernet adapter instead of my dial up apapter. I had this problem before once upon a time and resolved it by removing all the network components and readding them making sure I added the dial up adapter first. But apparently somewhere along the line a dun upgrade has caused that to no longer work, and it grabs my ethernet adapter IP ddress no matter what. The only way I can get winsock servers to get the right ip now (which is alas dynamic) is to remove tcpip for the ethernet adapter. This is a pain and involves a restart and there's got to be a better way. Does anybody know, or have any ideas where to look? WINIPCFG doesn't do anything.\ AUAHWBGA, JP

Chris M, A terrific app! One minor thing I haven't seen anyone else point out. One wonderful thing that dynamip does is close and open apps. I use it to close com port using apps on startup (works fine) and open them on exit. Unfortunately it starts the apps before the com port is released. I realize this is most probably due to latency in the os, and that the disconnect call has very likely indeed been issued, but not completed. If that is the case, and programming a check is a big hassle, maybe you could add a d lay checkbox? One second ought to do nicely, although variable wouldn't hurt. A simple fix that could make dynamip a little more useful. Not intended as a criticism, just a thought. Again thanks for a great program! JP

I think DynamIP is potentially one of the best Internet Applicaitons around and I thank Christoph for creating it. However, I am having a problem which is probably more common that I thought originally. I have configured everything correctly and have been able to locate my web page on a couple of occasions. But after the first connect, things seem to fall apart. I can never find it again. I get a message that no server is registered at DIPS, and can't locate my page or my ftp server again. I'm sure some o you gurus can identify with little thought the source of this problem and give me some advice as to how to correct it. It would certainly be appreciated. I wonder if it's something with the DIPS relay service or...God forbid...I really didn't have things configured properly in the first place. But that wouldn't explain the fact that I have been able to connect with this configuration.

Hi, I am new to this conference. I want to post a new topic but find only this "response" window. I hope it doesn't go to the wrong place. I want to use PCanywhere to connect my laptop (remote) to my desktop (host) in Network Mode, using TCP/IP. I got the following instruction from Symantec: On desktop: 1. setup desktop PCanywhere to "Be a Host", "Network", and use "TCP/IP" 2. log into my ISP (IBM Global Network, using IBM dialer software) 3. start up PCanywhere, and a window will show the dyna IP and message of "waiting for connection" On my remote: 1. start up PCanywhere, run "Remote Control" and "Network" 2. enter the host IP address, in this case, the dyna IP assigned to my desktop The problem is how can I know the dyna IP address if I am not in the office. How can I use DynamIP to inform me and let me know from my remote laptop what IP address to use? I have a commercial web site with a web hosting company. I thought about keeping a "dummy" page there (no one knows it's there except me), then after my host logs in, received IP address and upload that IP to the page, I can then FTP my web site (WS-FTP32, login and password required), read that dummy page to see what IP address is assigned to my desktop. But I am not sure whether DynamIP can write to my dummy file since to modify my web site pages might require proper user login and password. The other possibility is to put dummy page on my desktop and subscribe to DIPS service. Then from my laptop I can just start browser and read that dummy page. I need to do all this because I will be remote control from abroad (desktop in California) and want to avoid international call charges. Desktop will either be on all the time or be started by timer, with all necessary application lauched by scheduler so it will be ready for me to access. Thanks for everyone's help Charles Lin

I read a post by someone about not being able to connect using DynamIP 3.01 I am having the same problem, my DUN connector will not save my password therefore it has to be entered everytime it is dialed. Dunce does this and i was wondering if there is a place to enter the password in DynamIP? I have read through all the help files I think and I have not found this. Except for this little problem the programs looks awesome! IBDoomed ICQ:1233243

Actually we need to create a PC Anywhere topic but it may not fall under the definition that Forrest uses to select his apps. Perhaps Forrest could explain the criteria that he uses. We have other conferences on the Spring that deal with other subjects, for example, we have a web conference, an Internet conference, a Windows conference, etc. I'll create a conference in the Windows conference and try to alert the support people at Symantec to it's existence. Join the Windows conference for a discussion of PC Anywhere.

My apologies for not checking and answering questions for such a long time. My move to Switzerland went ok, but I spent the last 2 weeks in hospital (slipped disk which had to be fixed with surgery). I'm currently not in a state to do any programming (I'm not allowed to sit down for 2-3 months...), but at least I should be able to answer questions... Chris #117 and #122 can be solved by uninstalling and then reinstalling all the OCXs used by DynamIP (see the requirements page at http://DynamIP.home.ml.org/) #123 and #124: if Win95 doesn't save your password you have probably installed ServicePack 1 and are missing the Password Upgrade (both available from MS). This problem is NOT related to DynamIP at all. #125: I assume DynamIP fetches the correct IP address (if not, change the method in Setup|DUN/RAS). I would not know how to tell a third party server how to get the correct IP address. #126: I'm currently not in a state to do any programming (see above). Hope you'll be able to work around this problem somehow. #127: I'm not sure I understand the nature of the problem. If your problem is DIPS related, you can try the new thin client available from http://crubelier.stanford.edu/~cmu/DIPSClient/ If the problem is DUN/RAS related, you might try to upgrade to the latest version of Winsock (use the PPTP upgrade available from MS). Also, some problems exist if you have WINS enabled. #128: both methods will work (DynamIP is certainly able to upload a web page to your ISP using FTP). if all you need is the dynamic IP address of your desktop you might get away with using fewer resources by subscribing to DIPS and using the new thin client available from http://crubelier.stanford.edu/~cmu/DIPSClient/ #129: looks like a "ServicePack 1 installed" problem. Get the Password Upgrade available from MS to fix this. Has nothing to do with DynamIP. #130: I haven't tried Geocities in a long time, but from my own experience there are all kinds of problems using their service. Most annoying of all is the more or less random delay between you uploading your updated page to their FTP server and the page being available from their HTTPD. Not very good if your IP address changes frequently...

Sorry to hear about your slipped disk, Christoph, no wonder we havne't been hearing much from you. Here's wishing you a total recovery, hope you're ok.
~Baldguy #134
Hi all, Sorry to hear about the slipped disk/surgery woes, Chris. Here's wishing you a speedy recovery. In reference to the above posts about the password not sticking in the Dial-Up Networking screen... I'm not sure what this "Password Upgrade" is all about that Chris mentioned, but I will check it out. In the meantime... here's a workaround... Create a Windows 95 Login with the SAME username as you're using with your Dial-Up Networking account. (Note: you don't need to set a Windows 95 password with this username. It's up to you.) The way you do this is simple. Click "Start" - "Shutdown" - "Close all programs and log on as a different user". Type the same username that's in your Dial-Up Networking screen. (The password is optional and not necessary.) Once you're logged in to Windows 95, initiate a non-DynamIP logon to the internet. Type your password into the Dial-Up Networking screen and make sure the "Save password" box is checked. (This is a one time thing.) From then on... no matter what username you're logged into Windows 95 as... the password sticks. Worked for me anyway. Good luck. Regards, Marty Kopp

Result of response 128: I decided to use DIP service. I installed DynamIP, registered with DIPS, enabled my local web server, created a default page for the server to open at start up, and configured DynamIP and modified DynamIP.INI file to enable DIPS. But it does not work. DynamIP does receive the correct dynamic IP address, but when I click on "Online" button, I get a series of beeps and "Warning - Upload #1 failed" and then "FTP error". I think problem is in my setting, but I don't know where or what are the correct value to enter. I ran into some confusion when setting up Setup|Uploader options. I am not sure what to enter for Remote Host, Login ID, Password, Remote file. I assume host is my desktop PC and file is my "dummy" html file. But I am not sure I gave my desktop PC a "host name", nor "login ID" and password. I am not familiar with network setup and security, so perhaps I had configured my PC to have some sort of security, but how can I find out, since I seemed to have forgotten what and how I set it up. Also, I registered the .htm file using lower case, but after reading about the VB5 bug of converting file name to uppercase, I rename html file into uppercase and also made the case change in my MS Web Server "default Page" entry. Thanks for the help. Charles Lin, clin@ibm.net

I have a little problem with uploading DynamIP pages on a Server where my site is in a directory and not the root. I usually use Front Page to publish my pages and I have a login check to enter that directory (login is obviously different to access root). ~cmu #138
Thanx for the good wishes. I'm doing quite ok again (well, considering the circumstances...). Some walking around and getting the most important stuff done again. Here some quick answers: #135 Check out the DynamIP site. Under "Use WEBchat without uploading files" on the page for advanced users you'll find all the correct settings. #136 The remote directory can be specified together with the remote file name (e.g. public_html/DynamIP.htm). Note that depending on the settings the directory/file name gets converted to all caps because of a bug in the VB5 FTP library... #137 First of all, you should upgrade to the latest version DynamIP v3.01. If you still get the same error, I would try to manually install the OCX files (make sure you have the correct versions on your machine...). Chris

#140/141: I'm not aware of any bug fixes, but if somebody has information available, please drop me a line at cmu@bigfoot.com so that I can take care of this annoying problem. As for old versions, I simply don't have the resources to keep them up (let alone support them...). #142: Out of memory problems are most likely caused by wrong versions of libraries (OCX). Verify that you've got the correct version on your machine and register the libraries manually. Instructions are available on the DynamIP site. Chris

I am having some upload problems. I think that I have the ftp information set correctly. When I click on "online", the program gives me an immediate ftp error and beeps about 7 times. FTP Problems. First I would like to say that I LOVE this program and that it has saved me a small fortune not paying for the server space that I would use on an IP server. I have found that on the FTP hyperlink that DynamIP adds a / after the end of the hyperlink insertion. The problem is that Netscape and IE both mistake the / of the hyperlink as a UNIX subdirectory of the root, and unless that IS the root you get an error everytime. Is there a workaround to the IP hyperlink path problem? Any mods in the future planned for path statements??? Please??? lol.
~crossbow #146
Nevermind Chris.. I worked it out! I wouldn't do without this program..

I found DynamIP with Tucows. In their description they state "and establish point-to-point connection with MS NetMeeting". Is this correct? How does it work? Thanks for your reply.
~terry #148
That means you can simulate two computers that have ip addresses. Which allows private netmeetings.
~famaco #149
Thanks for your reply, Terry. Could you give me more details. I am a newby. MS told me that with their NetMeeting program a third server (chat room) is needed and point-to-point is not possible. As their chat rooms are very busy and difficult to get in, it would be great to use DynamIP. I just dont know how to make NetMeeting work without the third server (chat room). Can you give me an answer?
~cleger #150
Hi Chris, I'm trying to figure out why people using America Online are unable to use the WebChat feature of your program (which is a killer-app by the way!!) I am guessing that AOL doesn't like the use of port 1498 or something. I am using an ISP and have no problems from anyone but AOL users... I can receive all messages sent by the person via WebChat, but as soon as I respond, the following message comes up (on a blank web page): Cannot retrieve http://152.174.91.232POST (where the IP address is that of the AOL user!) Help please! Thanks, Chris Leger
~cmu #151
Response to question #149: Here's how the NetMeeting stuff works. The problem of establishing a direct point-to-point connection with NetMeeting is that you have to know the IP address of the computer you want to connect to. Either you connect to one of the many servers, or you can use DynamIP to scan a particular range of IP addresses to find the other computer (note that the other computer must be running DynamIP as well). This scanning of IP addresses works quite well if your ISP assigns you a dynamic IP address where only the l st bit changes each time you logon (e.g. 195.114.68.xxx), it is quite tedious if you're using something like AT&T WorldNet or MSN because one has to scan many ranges to find your computer. Once the two DynamIP clients have found each other, you're only a click away from establishing a point-to-point connection with NetMeeting. Note, however, that the real challenge is how to find out the IP address of the other computer (once you have the IP address, you might as well just type in this IP address into the NetMeeting client). You can read more details on the DynamIP web site at http://DynamIP.home.ml.org/. I hope that helps. Response to question #150: I have no idea why it doesn't work on AOL, but it is quite likely that they filter out traffic on the WEBchat port. Somebody who's using AOL could maybe try to play around with the port number (there are instructions on the DynamIP web site about how to change the default WEBchat port to something else). I have never used AOL (and quite frankly, I don't intend to use it), i.e. I can't really help you out on this one. However, if somebody figures out what exactly is wrong, I'm happy to change things on the DynamIP side if necessary. Chris

DynamIP v3.30 beta 1 released. Get it from http://DynamIP.home.ml.org/. Microsoft finally fixed the control MSINET.OCX so that the DynamIP uploader works properly now (fully asynchronous). For a limited time there is also a mirror site available in Europe at http://home.clara.net/cmu/ Support for DynamIP is alo back to its normal level as I've fully recovered from my back surgery. Merry X-mas and a Happy New Year to all of you. Chris

I have downloaded and installed the new DynamIP v3.30 beta 1 Am having a problem with the uploader. It seems to connect to my ISP, logon, and exchange passwords. Then it just times out. I'm having the exact same problem as #154! Frustrating as I haven't had DynamIP working yet. The error log is a bit too basic to help in this situation. Anyone come across this before?
~Baldguy #156
The uploader in 3.30 beta 1 works for me *sometimes* and sometimes not. Haven't noticed any pattern. When it doesn't work I get the same log as 155 above is getting. I have noticed that when it *does* work when I first connect, if I click on the OFFline button without disconnecting... it times out. Then I can't get DynamIP to exit (or quit) without brute force. i.e., rebooting.
~Baldguy #157
I've signed up for the DIPS service since the previous message and now the uploader works 99% of the time. Is this a coincidence or did I do something else to fix it? Also...is it my imagination or did the iphone link in uploaded pages used to work with Netscape Navigator 3? I'm using Communicator 4 now and it doesn't work. Checked out the DynamIP pages and it only mentions it working with IE. So... was it a dream? :-)
~cmu #158
DynamIP v3.30 beta 2 released. Get it from http://DynamIP.home.ml.org/. Some minor fixes with the uploader, but the true improvement is in the module that detects your computer's IP address: DynamIP supports environments with multiple IP addresses and multiple adapters (multihomed). Even if you're on a LAN and use a modem to dial up every now and then DynamIP is now capable of detecting your IP address correctly. Unfortunately, DynamIP still won't work properly with some FTPDs out there. If you are having problems with the uploader (e.g. it times out and you can never upload your file), please activate logging and check where exactly the thing doesn't move anymore. I am a little reluctant to write my own FTP client just because MS still hasn't been able to put everything into MSINET.OCX, but maybe it just has to be. However, if you have already installed a web server on your own machine (e.g. MS personal web serve [free like many others]), you could actually serve the page with your IP address directly from your own computer. Sign up for a free DIPS account and then use DynamIP's DIPS client capability. DIPS (Dynamic IP Server) is our new free service that allows people to publish web content from their own computer through a fixed URL even though they are on a dynamic IP address! Detailed information about DIPS is available from http://DIPS.home.ml.org/. What happened to www.iceinc.net, the new DynamIP home? Well, I have no idea myself. I lost contact with the guys shortly after the big storms hit the US and I don't know whether it's just a technical problem or whether they folded for good... In the mean time, DynamIP is available from my Stanford mirror site at http://graphics.stanford.edu/~jbasch/cmu/DynamIP. DynamIP.ml.org will automatically take you there for the time being. And here a hint as to whether iphone, callto, and stuff works with the Netscape products. In principle it does, but it depends on the server settings. Unless your Netscape browser gets a clue from the server it won't know what client to start. With Internet Explorer the callto tag is always associated with NetMeeting (assuming it is installed), regardless of the server settings. Well, thx for your continued support. Chris PS: Oh, if anybody knows why Stroud's still not willing to cough up that last bit of the 5th star, please tell me. He still complains about DynamIP being mostly of use to those with dynamic IP addresses, but that is really a bit short sighted. Lots of people (including myself) use DynamIP in LAN environments.
~terry #159
How is it useful to you in LAN environments and is it useful at all to people with LANS running dedicated ip addresses? Have you heard that they are going to start charging for IP addresses?
~W2893066406 #160
Hello every body i can' t Setting dynamix ip ....Please help me my email is jansengrat@usa.net
~cmu #161
DynamIP v3.30 beta 2 is the first version that allows you to clearly specify (using include/exclude filters and adapter numbers) to which IP address DynamIP should "react" (assuming you have multiple IP addresses, e.g. if you're on a LAN [with a static IP address] and use a modem to connect to your private ISP [and therefore get a static IP address]. Previous versions of DynamIP simply returned the first IP address found and more often than not this was not the one "dynamic IP address" people wanted to us for template updates, etc. Not a big issue for most DynamIP users, but those who struggled with this problem in the past (and asked me for a fix) got exactly what they wanted. Obviously, if you are on a LAN and have only 1 static IP address this improvement won't do anything for you (DynamIP has been working fine in such environments before). Haven't heard anything about being charged for IP addresses... Chris
~terry #162
I hear it's on the way, when that happens dynamic ip will get even more popular. I just got a Compaq Notebook and I'll be using it on a lan at home and connecting to an isp on the road. Do you have any recommendations for a national isp that would be good to use on the road in terms of being compatible with dynamip? (eg. AOhell, MindSpring, AT&T, etc.)

I have to say that I really like the concept of DynamicIP, however I am having a problem with the Upload feature. I have traced the process as best I could and was able to determine that it logs into my ftp, enters the password and then times out for some reason. Anyone have a posible solution to this. After reading the documentation I have the feeling it involves the ftp commands issued by DynamicIP. Is it possible to modify the Upload action itself? Anyone with suggestions or input please feel free o email me at: twinz@bellsouth.net or lost@dione.ccti.net (text only;ELM;UNIX system) Rob E.

Hi all. It looks like everyone else is having good luck with the new release. Unfortunately, that's not the case for me. I'm running NT4.0 with SP3 and RAS installed and working perfectly. Apparently, the install program for DynamIP is having problems registering some of my OCXs. When I try to start the program, it says that msinet.ocx is not functioning or not registered or something. I double checked the version numbers AND sizes of all the files. I have also tried the whole manual register a few time with no luck. When trying to register/unregister msinet.ocx, an error message pops up which reports the error code as some hex number. After looking through these posts, I know people were having similar problems in the past, but it seems that the actual solutions people found were never reposted. Does there happen to be a newsgroup for DynamIP? This system is a little cumbersom... Thanks in advance for ANY and ALL help! Ryan lynchrl@colorado.edu olequt32.dll riched32.dll

DynamIP v3.30 beta 4 released. Get it from http://www.bigfoot.com/~DynamIP/. This new beta is especially useful if you had problems with the uploader (probably caused by MSINET.OCX which still doesn't work properly with some FTPD). Anyway, beta 4 supports DIPFTP Client which uses FTP routines available in WININET.DLL (you can even get the source code if you need to fine-tune the upload). Also, if you have IE4/ActiveDesktop installed, DynamIP now features IE4 tyle toolbars (coolbars). Enhanced support for machines with multiple IP addresses. I downloaded the new beta 4 quickupgrade (yes, I was using beta 3 successfully) and now I'm getting the same errors that response 165 above is getting... (The only difference is that I'm using Windows 95) " ... I try to start the program, it says that msinet.ocx is not functioning or not registered or something. I double checked the version numbers AND sizes of all the files. I have also tried the whole manual register a few time with no luck. " The error code that regsvr32 is spitting back is "LoadLibrary("msinet.ocx") failed. GetLastError returns 0x0000001f." This happens whether trying to register or unregister. Any ideas?
~Baldguy #169
OK...problem solved to the above. Turns out it was the newer version of WININET.DLL that I installed. There's a link to it on the DynamIP page. As soon as I went back to the older version I was able to unregister msinet.ocx.

Christoph, tell us about your company and your operation if you would. HOw many people and what do they do? Or is it a one person business? How did you get started? How the idea for DynamIP evolve?
~cmu #172
Well, there is no company behind DynamIP (I'm what you call a "one person business"). DynamIP is something that I started developing about 2 years ago because I couldn't afford a permanent Internet connection. I needed a tool that would allow me to tell my friends how to get in contact with me once I was online (there was no ICQ back in 1996...). The first versions of DynamIP were nothing more than simple IP Posters, i.e. they would allow you to post a web page containing the current IP Address to a web s rver. Later I just kept adding features that I thought would be useful, e.g. a POP mail checker and a PC clock synchronizer (my PC clock was always off be a few minutes...). With time more and more people started using DynamIP, and with the increased user base I started getting more and more requests for additional features. Quite a few of those requests/suggestions made it into DynamIP over time. The current version DynamIP v3.30 final release includes: - DUN/RAS dialer (timer-controlled w/ program launch) - Uploader (the IP Poster) - POP mail checker - a fully functional DIPS Client - IPchat/WEBchat - HTTP scanner If you want to know more about DynamIP you can move over to http://www.bigfoot.com/~DynamIP/ and read all the details about this free Internet utility. More about myself is available at http://www.bigfoot.com/~cmu/.

Hello, I am new to this discussion group and I was stumped by the number of messgaes in here. In any case, can someone PLEASE tell me how to setup WEBCHAT? My computer crashes a LOT whenever I go to CMU's site and I couldn't find any information relevant on how to edit the source code so that the panel appears on my web page. PLEASE help me! -M W

First, a big thank you to Christoph for his fine work. Why is it that much of the really useful software out there is freeware? Here's something that might help some of you having trouble with the ftp upload phase of the IP address stuffer. I had a problem when I installed DynamIP in that everything seemed to work except that last phase. I'd get ftp timeout errors every time. Turned out that simply changing the 'Local File's address from "c:\program files\dynamip\filename" to "c:\progra~1\dynamip\filename" fixed the problem. Seemed to be a problem, at least on my system, with the long filename with the space. Could I make an enhancement request? I'm with an ISP who has six possible dialup numbers. Could the DynamIP list be expanded to handle the larger number? Also, I'm full-up with the Applications I launch and would like to have DynamIP launch a couple more. Any chance the number could be expanded from 5 to, say, 10 launches? Question: Is there any way to assign a Win95 (win98 in my case) keystroke to command a dialup? I often come to my computer desk with a blank (screen-saved) CRT and instead of waiting for everything to wake up before left-right the DynamIP icon, it'd save me a few to be able to command a default dialup with a Windows keystroke. In other words, is there a command-line argument that would initiate a default dialup? Note that DynamIP is normally already started and is sitting there in the task tray, so simply assigning a keystroke to DynamIP does nothing, even if I have it configured to dial on startup. Thanks again for the great work, Chris.

There's a problem with the DynamIP page at xoom. Use the URL http://www.bigfoot.com/~DynamIP/ to get to an emergency page. You will also find a link to the temporary home of DynamIP. Note that you can also download the latest version of DynamIP (v3.30 final release) from any Tucows site/mirror. My apologies for the inconvenience. I hope things will clear up soon. Chris
