This email I got today seemed appropriate to use as an intro to
this item. Perhaps Forrest will take a look at this app.
This is one of my favorite sites. If i need a tool, i know this is
where i can get it...
BUT. The last couple of day i have been browsing to find a way to
submit a new email client. It is called "TransSoft's Mail Control".
Current release is 2.3b and has all features plus having a very nice
interface it is fully automated, Works while you are out, dialing up to
the ISP, retrieving the messages, and even replies to them by your own
rules, and sorts them on to their corresponding folders. Neat!
You can read all about it at: http://www.centrum.is/~bhg or download
it from: ftp://ftp.centrum.is/pub/TransSoft/TMail23b.EXE
Anyway.... I could not find a way to to submit....??
I would like it evaluated. It is a shareware, active for one month
after installation. Registration fee is $50.
PLUS: There is an upcoming new version, called TMC PRO 3.0 wich
features PGP imlementations. That will be among few full featured email
clients available. It is due in late november or early december.
There are currently over 2000 registered users of the software, and
God only knows how many in the evaluation state.
Please advice what to do, or whom to turn to!!!?
Sincerely,
Bjorn

Happy Halloween Bjorn, and thanks for bringing this app to our attention.
Forrest may see it here and may choose to review it. That's up to him.
But this sounds like a good app from your description and I'll try and
take a look at it. Right now I'm using Microsoft Internet Explorer's
mail program and I'm fairly satisfied with it except for the fact that
I have multiple mailboxes. I'm still using elm for a lot of these (sigh).
It's interesting about the autocheckins and autoreplies, I've heard of other
programs that do these things and I believe a couple of these are already
reviewed here.

Happy Halloween Terry!
I have not yet seen a full featured email client that has these features -
especially not with automatic dial, fetch, reply, disconnect, routine.
But, i don't know though. These are, of cause not the only features, mind you.
There are many others of interest. You can find the program on my page:
http://www.centrum.is/~bhg
and download it or read about it from there.
I am a bit surbrised about Forrest. I have three times mailed him without a single response...??
Feels like knocking on heavens door...!
I do, of cause also use the mailer of my browser. But only when sending to a link from a HTML.
The TransSoft's Mail Control gives you much more control over what you have been mailing,
what to do with mails so there is the "tool" one needs when mailing a
lot. The last month i had ~850 messages. I have full control over this.
Whom to speak to, when, etc. This i do by means of automatic folder sorting.
So when i get mail form persons of choice, those messages are automatically put
in special folders, likewise if i am sending to those.
I have also used it on clients that are subscribers to changes and articles.
These just send message with a special text in their message which triggers an
auto-reply that sends a message with selected foles attached. Neat, huh!
Anyway, i think i'll browse and see if there are any other full-featured
clients with these features around on your site!

I just downloaded TransSoft and I liked the way it autofilled in my mail server: mail.spring.com after I
told it what my email address was. Not correct, but it's a good idea as most systems use this. My pop mail server happens to be barton.spring.com. I
checked autofetch so it will get my mail automatically. I like the multiple sig options and the header text.
The first thing I wanted to make sure of when I started it up was that the program wouldn't erase all my mail on the server when I fetched it. So I clicked on the 'Host' item on the top menu bar. I pulled it down and it said Control Center. When I clic
ked on this it didn't give me options but it did give me a list of all the emails on the server and offered me the option of deleting any of these. Nice feature!
The I found the icon at the bottom of the window 'Mail Control Preferences', the default is to leave messages on the server. Good move Bjorn, Netscape and Explorer mail have the default preset to remove mail messages from the server. How considerate!
Bjorn has adopted the Explorer type interface where icons brighten and color up when you wave the mouse over them. I'll let you know more after I use this app for a while, these are my reflections after using it for about 10 minutes. But already I'd say
that this program is worthy of a review at Stroud's site.
It has a feature that automatically will dial your isp and check your mail at whatever internval you specify. I set this up, hoping that it wouldn't conflict with 'Dunce', my all purpose RAS/autodialer program.
Four walruses.

I have my fingers crossed, Terry!
No, seriously; If there is a conflict, the solution is easy... If you do have a n autodialer you have an alternitive. Don't start the "Auto-MAil". I noticed, from above, that you marked the "auto-fetch" option in your email properties. This should be eno
ugh! Just leave the mailer hanging, with the option of Background checking enabled at a specified interval. Let the system stand with the main screen on. This way it will automatically fetch your mail also. This option would be appropriate for those with
ermanent connection also.
I'd also like to pay your attention to the auto sorting of the incoming messges; the menu topic: "Folders/Incoming rules editor", as well as outgoing. The incoming rules offer you the reply option.
More later!

That's next on my list. I did notice something when I clicked Host/Control Center. It gave me a text window which showed me all the emails residing on the host. It would be a great feature to be able to select the emails I wanted on the server and then
could move them over to the local mail program. One defect of popmail programs is that you can't go
back and get emails that you have already transferred. TransSoft Mail did offer the option of being able to save the email as a file on my local hard dri
e.
Bjorn will send an email to mailto:terry@spring.com so I can test some of these
rules? I'm starting to set up some of this stuff.

Well, actually Terry, in about two weeks, you will notice more than this. This is in our new version; "TMC PRO 3.0".
Not only are we working on the PGP implementation, but also multiple features for the control center among other stuff. These are f.ex.:
Being able to select messages and mark them as "read" or "unread",
PLUS beeing able to retrieve a "selected attached file" from a message
over to the local machine.
And there is more...
I am preparing emails to send!

If you can mark messages on the server as 'read' or 'unread' that's a good feature, one that I could use. How about folks with multiple mail accounts on multiple machines? Are you going to address this?

??? I thought i had!
You can have access to all your mailboxes via one single dial-up connection. - Plus you do have the RAS control for multiple ISP connectivity.
You just add as many users, and as many emails to each user as you want. You only need one connection onto the internet to get from all the boxes.
Or am i missing something...!!?
Next tuesdayafternoon i am posting the new TMS PRO 3.0 to all my beta testers.
I think this will be greatly appreciated by the PGP community! We are using
very special solutions to the subject. The user will hardly notice the PGP, he just marks a message, encrypted or not, signed or not, and there will be special implementations regarding keyrings and public key authentications.
Do you know anything about PGP. It would be great to have somone with the PGP knowledge here to chat.
Maybe you should start a new topic: "PGP in email clients". Or "Using PGP" or something.

We can do that! I am very interested in pgp for an electronic commerce application I am developing. I
hope to be able to sell a wide line of software apps and other products on various websites that I am
developing. And I stand corrected on the multiple mailboxes.
Here's a tough question (a hardball, sorry) for you. How do you stack up against the well established
"BeyondMail" which has similar functionality as far as rules based mail handling? This is the program
that I've been most familiar with over the years that does this sort of thing. Are you familiar with it?
I just picked up the O'Reilly book which has more than you want to know about pgp encryption. Let's
keep this dialog going and hopefully we'll get some traffic from other users on your website soon if you
can put a prominent enough link up explaining what this discussion group is all about.

Ahh, eh!
I do not know beyondmail! I have but one motto, not to know much about what others do and how they do it!!! My users have developed the system with me, and this is what i think gets me as far as i would like to go!
The rule based mail handling is swell, but it is the addition "Auto-Reply" that makes our rules special. AND we order outgoing messages onto folder too...
Tomorrow i'll make a link on to your pages from our homepage with explanations concerning PGP, asking my visitors to participate.
Email me with info's on how it is going with the mailer!

Great then, this will be good open forum for your users to get involved
in the evolution of your app. I have my 'wish' list of features that I'd
like to see. I'll let you know after I've pounded on your program more.
My biggest hot feature would be the ability to scan mail on the server and
pick which ones to transfer to the pc. What is the current standing of
IMAP support as compared to POP? (we use pop on all the Spring's servers).
I've even heard murmurings of a web based email system on the Internet,
though I haven't tried it yet.

My system does not yet support imap4. This will be implemented, all in good time. The main reason is my lack of imap4 based resources, that is, an imap4 server where i can have connections for testing...
And as i described earlier, you will have your "hot" feature; the ability to select mails on host to be downloaded.
A web based email system... Please explain!

There's a program called WebMail which supports a web connection to a Lan based email system.
You can compose and send messages from a web page. BeyondMail supports this, among others.
There's a bunch of information on their website at
http://www.ihub.com/products/webmail/
As far as imap goes, check out ftp://ftp.cac.washington.edu/imap/imap.software
this is a very complete listing on all the software that supports imap on the
client and the server side of things. Surprisingly, elm is not supporting it but
pine is on the unix server mail side of things. There is something that supports
both web based mail and imap.
It's "NDC".
Another web based mail system is called Non-Dairy Creamer
(hope it's better than that stuff you have to use sometimes
when there's no real milk or cream around).
Non-Dairy Creamer uses imap (Interactive Mail Access
Protocol version 4) from within a Java application or
Applet. NDC provides a layer of abstraction on top of
the network protocol so app programmers can
build mail reading capabilities into their Java programs
(or Applets).

About WebMail:
I built such a program, and you can find it in use f.ex. at:
http://www.firmnet.is/icemac/
Browsing their products and services, you'll find links at each line in their products tables. This link leads you to a query page which is emailed when submitted to two key-people in the company....
The trouble is that it is made exclusively for Win-NT based servers. I have not put this on to the commerce. Maybe i should...!?
The imap info:
I'll look into these things!
But the problem with not having access to an imap4 based website still remains. I would have to build a website of my own for the testing, which i know will be enormous...as testing is a great big part of the development.
Yet, i promise you, this will be implemented. The date is the question...!

You're welcome to use one of the Spring's servers for testing purposes. We have three popmail servers right now. Can popmail and imap co-exist on the same server?
~bubbi
Mon, Nov 4, 1996 (18:12)

That would be great!
I can't see why not...
But you would need an imap4 server! This can become pretty complex, i think!
I'll check this out better. Your offer is generous and i appreciate it.
I am a co-webmaster at http://wwww.firmnet.is so if i am to install a server on a website somewhere it might just as well be there. Maybe i can have a trial version of an imap4 compatible server to develope on.

Well Terry!
We are just about finishing our TMC PRO 3.0 beta. An exciting moment is on the horizon.
I would appreciate having your "hot list", the one you spoke of earlier, as we are currently implementing many users hot list's and ideas.
Hope you are satisfied with our mailer!

I love the features of TransSoft Mail Control....and would most likely register it if it weren't for a few irritating things in the interface. I would like to make some suggestions, and ask you to implement these if possible and let me know.
1. I don't like how when you reply to a message, the first window that is highlighted is the recipient name...so if I start typing my message, it erases the name and I have to cancel and go back. I think the cursor should go to where you start typing since obviously the name field comes from the message being replied to.
2. When I have a stack of email in my inbox, and I reply to one, when I click done it sends me to my outbox. Then I have to go back to the inbox, find where I left off, and start over. I would like to remain in the inbox unless I tell it to go to the out box.
3. I would like to be able to increase the size of the window which shows the contents of folder selected... Make it adjustable so that I can see all my mail. Also, show not just the date received, but the time also.
4. When recieving .gif files, and others, the mailer can't tell what type of files they are and makes me name them other things...then I have to go back and name them...
5. I wish I could just hit the delete key and send the current mail to the trash. I wish you could view what's in the trash and only delete it when I want to..
6. I want to be able to scroll down a list of email with the arrow keys in the inbox without every one I pass over getting opened... Maybe they would only open if you hit return or clicked?
7. I'd like a key board shortcut for the DONE button in the email editor...
8. I'd like to be able to choose if the quoted text in a reply goes on the top of the bottom of my message.
9. I'd LOVE to be able to choose my own .wav files to play when I recieve email. Ideally, a different sound for each email box..
10. I'd like to be able to sort the mail in a folder by clicking on the gray bar "categories" such as date, or subject, or sender... like Microsoft Exchange allows you to do..
11. I'd like to be able to set it to send mail every so often like it allows you to check mail every so often...
Thanks for your time. Please let me know if these suggestions could be implemented soon and I'll grab myself a copy of this program..

Well, hi there Mike!
I like you ideas. Many of them have already been implemented in TMC PRO 3.0, but others are not. A few of those will be implemented. But some things must be explained to me better.
Here are some of the things we have been working on:
a. Implementing complete PGP methods and keywork. Seamless integration.
b. More intelligent editor with many control options.
c. Rubber Interface. Allows the user to stretch interface objects to and forth...and stay that way...
d. Receive mail and send mail are now integrated into the main system, speeding up all folder and message work by as much as down to 1/9th of the time it took to get a message...
e. RAS functioning for Win NT 3.5x and 4.0; had faults in previous release.
f. More stable interface. F.ex. flickers not while scrolling the folders.
g. The "Host Control Center", allows re-reads or pre-reads of messages. Also mark them optionally as read or unread.
h. More to the point filter engine with "AND", "OR" and "NOT" options.
g. Better Auto-reply editor with spell checker and such.
h. Much more!

We're ok. We're not invisible (I hope). At least Topic 305 is alive and healthy.
In fact, this topic is the most active on the Spring right now. Crash! It was
*my fault* for not hooking keyboards up to all our servers. We had a power outage.
Just call it pure stupidity and try to overlook it ok?
I'm glad you're telnetting to us now, Bjorn. I hope we can become as familiar
with some of the other autohrs of apps software as we are with you. I hope the
users of the Spring and the visitors to your website can join in the conversation
going on here and we can build up some critical mass.
I'm becoming a big TransSoft Mail Control fan, I like it more and more after using
it. I'm looking forward to registering and getting into it deeper.

Thanks Terry!
Tomorrow, saturday or next synday, i'll send you a copy of the beta. I'll send it to you with the PGP inactive whereas that is the greatest implementation and is currently in development.
This beta has a bunch of interface changes. It's more "quiet", not so much popping up windows, and not so many things happening on the screen. Also, we delayed the TMC PRO 3.0 for approx 2 weeks because of incompatibility of RAS versus Windows NT that we experienced. This has been fixed, as we rewrote the whole bunch. That was quite a job, believe me.
Would love receiving a reply to my mail, where i was asking further about the account and more!

Hi Greg!
I will post it!
It will be posted as a prerelease 3.0 beta. I just hope people won't think this is the final release. The final release has much more than this working version which is in development at this point. But i will take that chance, explaining the lot. When it has been posted it will be announced right here.

I will be sending you an ftp location to the pre-release of TMC PRO 3.0 tomorrow. It will be a working release with a lot of changes from the 2.3b. But the final version with the PGP active is due to release in two weeks from now!
Please respond!

I'm working on writing it still. And I can't guantee if Forrest will use it or choose
to do his own review or not review it at all. But I can guarantee that I'm working
on a review and plan to submit it to him as soon as I finish with it.
I sent you email on possibly using one of our servers as a North America download site for TMC Pro 3.0. I've been busy today installing a RealAudio server on barton.spring.com, the machine I just gave you an account on.
That, and the Packers Chiefs game on tv and cutting firewood for a friend have kept me away from finishing up that review today. Maybe later this evening.
Ya know, the PGP version will be real useful to folks who want to conduct secure electronic commerce on the web. Like we do.

Hi Terry!
You are a busy man!
I am looking forward to posting the TMC Pro 3.0 pre-release to you!
The PGP:
There are quite a lot of users for secure mail clients. Take all club members, Authorities, Governments, Companies, The Health System, The commerce sites, And on and on...
I would recommend for you to open a conversation for PGP users somwhere on your site. They have VERY limited source of software. In that conversation you can point them over to this conversation we are having here.
It would be nice to hear from them, what they need, how, and what for. As i told you earlier in this conversation my product is conducted by my users, actually. I would learn a great deal from those users. I am having a great help from a few around the world, but the more, the merrier.

Hi All!
The pre-release of TMC pro 3.0 is nor ready for download. But please do not intall to the previous directory of TransSoft's Mail Control. An update version will be made but as this is a pre-release....
It does NOT include PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) as that portion is under severe testing and development.
If you would like it to work with your previous data do this:
- Install on to a new folder.
- Copy all .exe files on to the previous version
And here it is:
ftp://ftp.centrum.is/TransSoft/TMCpro3.EXE
or from my homepage
http://www.centrum.is/~bhg
This should do it!!!
Looking forward to hearing from you!

I have an idea for a feature. How about allowing users to control the
order of their emails other than the usual sorting. For example, I'd
like to assign a number from 1 to 9 to certain emails and then sort them
by this number. That way I could order my emails in order of
importance. Or I could select a group, say all the emails with the
number 9 assigned, and move them to a folder marked 'high priority'.

Good idea!
This would allow a more control over you messages, so it suits me.
I am implementing a message filter for the new version. With it you can make the system display only messages with a special text in subject, recipient, sender or even in the mail body.
Have you downloaded the pre-release yet?
I had to rewrite the whole RAS system because of the incompatibility between the platforms '95 and NT4 and NT 3.5x.
A new pre-release will be posted soon, as many changes are being tested this moment.

Here's a big challenger for you, Bjorn. How about adding a feature that pulls email from multiple mailboxes and dumps them all in one mailbox and then - this is the challenging part - **elminates duplicate**. I get mail from about 50 or more different email boxes and I need a way to sort and prioritize this stuff.

Consider i done, Terry!
After TMC Pro beta with PGP is out i'll implement this along with other challenging ideas.
One great idea came from Mike from virtual server. That one was to let the incoming rule system build up a mailing lists. Great huh? By some ruling stuff, like special subjects or clauses the sending person is guarenteed to have a reply on the subject along with all other persons of the same interrest.
Smart, don't you think?
Your idea calls other methods along with it. Retrieving, not one, but all email boxes BEFORE evaluating them. AND there must be a predefined, primary mailbox that will keep the single message that comes out from all the duplicates.
50 boxes!!!! Wow! One might think your job was a postman. You really need my program!!!! Whan all is done with TMC Pro, i think you'll gain a smiling face!
Until tomorrow! (Hopfully i'll bring you the big news ny then!!)

The truth is, i have always lacked the words for what it is i am aiming at with my product. I think this phrase tells just about it:
"A Complete Communications Control Deck". (CCCD)
or:
"Web Messages Control Center" (WMCC)
As above sais: I am aiming at a system that takes over all thinkable needs concerning Web Messages; eMail, Voice-mail, Secure mails (Contracts, money transfers, offers, individuals data), and in addition to this: "all control over the matter". F.ex. the Host, The Ras, The folders, The email accounts behaviour etc, etc.

Perhaps you could call it "Total Domination". heh.
The problem with getting all mail from multiple mailboxes end up in one box is that some will be duplicates (especially if you're implementing forwarding) so the elimination of duplicates would be a *great* feature. Neither Netscape nor Explorer does this!

How do you set up Microsoft Internet Explorer so that when you click on the
Mail icon, TransSoft Mail Control launches? Can this be made an option in your install program so that this is automatic. I see being able to do this as eliminating a barrier that folks might have which would keep them from using your software. Let's face it, folks do what offers the least resistance and I find it very easy just to click the mail icon to grab my mail while surfing around the net.
Can TransSoft go in a grab mail out of Netscape and Explorers mail programs?

Sorry about that extra Submit!
I am going to implement this. I am familiar with the methods in Netscape, but i have not had the time yet to look it up in MS IE.
I am aware of this! But then again, when you are using win-95 you have two, three, four or more systems going the same time, swapping between them is a snap. And usually you only use the browsers mail-client on hot links in the HTML you are viewing. At least this is the thing with me. These mail clients don't do all these things for you that i am implementing with my features. And the PGP, voice-mail, auto-reply, auto-mailer (automatical dial up mail handling on specified interval)!!! They have a long
ay to go, if ever they will get there.
The way i see it, there is not a compare!
But i will implement this, for my clients to be able to have all mails in one place.

Earlier this evening, I was reading through the current issue of Windows Magazine and it detailed a way (toward the front of the magazine) to fix up Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 so that when you click on the Mail icon, that you could launch a mail program *other* than the one that comes bundled with it. It's a simple procedure, one that uses regedit, so it would be useful to provide these directions.
By they way, I just downloaded 3.0 from the above ftp link. It came up with no problems and smartly put itself in another directory other than the older version's, since this is not a "replacement" version.

From what I've tested under TMC 3.0 , I can say that it's the best email program that I've tested. I was looking at the reviews that Cnet are doing with other email programs. I think they need to review this program. They will be surprixed at what they would find. Even with problems that are getting quick solutions, TMC 3.0 is the best email program this year. I would like to submit the final version to Cnet.

TO: C/Net Review [reviews@cnet.com]
In regards to the review that was done on email program packages, (Email Essentials by Gregg Keizer) I would like to throw another hat into the ring. I've been looking for an application that would give me the same options that a network email program would ( My favorite is Groupwise for Novell/ formally wordperfect mail) at a reasonable price. I found one,TMCpro version 3.X. The program was created by Transoft Ltd.

What I like about the company is that IDEAS are welcome and good ideas are incorporated ASAP. I know they come out with allot of updates, but that's what a good application does. Immediate bug fixes and new ideas integration. I've attached the homepage address for your review.

Hi you all!
Thanks for the above Perry! I really appreciate this!!!
I am hoping you'll all be statisfied with my work, whereas i am posting a new pre-release monday evening. The final version will be out this week.
AND this new release has an upgrade procedure for those that had downloaded before, so they can install on to their previous TMC folder!
This new pre-release has these enhencements among others:
1. Interface greatly changed
2. repeated download of messages via Host Control Center
3. Inbound rule allows one to add the sender to the address book under a specified group. Later the user can send emails to all of these specifically.
4. Auto-connect more reliable.
5. PGP greatly improved with a bunch of options and properties and setups and copying etc, etc...
6. Trash folder for you to undelete....
7. Supports all platforms, '95, NT3.5x, NT4 with respect to the RAS.
8. One button for Send/Get
8. Great many bug fixes...
What we are currently working on and/or testing:
1. A small, iconized, low-resource unit that takes care of the events of the auto-mailer.
2. Macros in auto-reply text. With Macros (variables) you can for example say:
Dear {$SENDER}
This subject, {$SUBJECT}, is .....
3. Automatic redirection of incoming messages.
4. Many more features...
Please download tomorrow night, and let me know!
Thanks!

You will no be able to make TMC your default mail client. Processing hot links in HTML's and such...
This can be done for those using MS.IExplorer. Netscape is giving me more trouble!!
And don't hesitate to try this, whereas the program will allow you to reset it to the MS.MAIL. But i don't think you'll want that....Will you?

Hi Terry!
Well, i got the review! And frankly, i am VERY happy with the outcome. Not bad a start i'd say! Right?
Anyway, the Final version is out. Many of my users had a complete Christmas-Wish-List that i wanted to fulfill, so i postponed the final for a few days. One of those was a RTF-editor for the messages. This allows them to create good-looking messages with a fearly nice word-processor i made and integrated to TMC.
The incoming rules have new features s.a. to add senders to addressbook or remove them from it. There you also can redirect incoming mail to another address automatically.
The system is more stable now as it controls RAS in a more sophisticated manner, using alternate techniques.
Please download and tell me what you think.
Untill later!

Hi Terry (-and of cause, all yea other readers...) !
This is to tell you about updates of TMC!
Today i posted a new pre-release 3.25 of TMC. The final release of 3.25 wil add many great new features to TMC. Most of them never seen in a mail client before! This pre-release is a showcase of three of them!
New feature no available:
1. - Macros (variables) in auto-reply messages. This allows you to design reply messages that the mailer changes when it is sent in order to address specific things. F.ex. if you would place {$Sender} and {$Subject} TMC would exchange these with the senders name and the receiving message subject.
2. - "Message templates". The user can now build up a collection of predefined forms to use on various occasions. This allows those working a lot with email to build the foms with all of the neccessary text.
3. - "Remote Commands Interpreter" or RCI. RCI is a very powerful feature which we will be adding a lot of new features into. The first release is out with this pre-release of TMC. RCI allows the owner of TMC to control it remotely in the way that he can tell TMC complete local tasks by sending messages with a special script to it. We have developed a script we have chosen to call "RCI script". The user just sends a message with RCI script, from any type of mailer he cooses, from a remote location and
he TMC fulfills the Scripting task. This script can be a list of DOS commands to complete; for instance to zip a file, and then he can tell TMC to send the zipped file in a new message as an attchment, to him on his remote location. This can come in handy, if you are downtown or far away: If you need a file from your computer at home, just send it a message and TMC will complete the task and send it to you!
Things we are currently working on:
1. - HTML techniques. Due on 12.20.1996 (Viewer) and 1.10.1996 (HTML Editor)
We are ipmlementing a HTML viewer for HTML messages. The viewer will be integrated into the mailer and the mailer will recognise wether the message is a HTML, RTF or a normal plain TEXT message. Along with this the system will allow you to create a HTML message, as we are generating a HTML editor for the task. This is to be a WYSIWYG editor (What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get) for those unfamiliar with the HTML language.
2. - RCI "Remote Command Interpreter" wizard. Due in end december, 1996
The RCI wizard will make an end user able to create RCI script without any knowledge of RCI at all.
3. Macros in Templates. Due on 12.20.1996
With this feature you will be able to use templates with pre-defined locations of the name of the receiver, sender, date etc. The TMC will automatically put those into the message on these predefined locations.
4. Carbon Copy Capabilities. Due on 12.20.1996
For multiple receivers messages. (Although you are capable of this today, CC is a standard feature that we will not ignore).
5. Blind Carbon Copy Capabilities. Due on 12.20.1996
For multiple receivers messages without the receiver to be able to see that. (Although you are capable of this today, BCC is a standard feature that we will not ignore).
Hope you'll enjoy TMC!!

These are some powerful new capabilities. At work today, I had to try and get a copy
of Eudora for our sales team (I mentioned TransSoft but they needed a particular form of
encryption that talks to our modem) and set up a beta machine with both Microsoft Mail
and Eudora Pro for evaluation. The mailer that comes with Microsoft Internet Explorer
has one great feature I like: the ability to click on the top of a column of mail messages
and sort by date, reverse date, subject, reverse alpha subject, etc. I'd like to see a
feature list comparison of TransSoft, Microsoft, Pegasus, and Eudora Pro and perhaps a
couple of others. I think that TranSoft would come off very well in such a comparison.
How are you addressing the concerns that Forrest expressed in his review? Has the volume
of downloads started to increase? What are your next steps? How is TransSoft positioned
among the other software products that TransSoft offers. Is TransSoft strictly an Icelandic
operation or are you a "virtual company"? How are you organized?

PLEASE READ THOROUGHLY!
First of all: TMC sorts the messagelist when you press the header of it. It can be sorted by date, subject or Sender/Receiver optionally in ascending or descending.
Concerning the Strouds review:
I will be keeping the mailer at $50 (for now anyway). The reason is the hard work behind the product AND the fact that the my aim for CCCD (Complete Communication Control Deck) has placed TMC in a unique position. NO OTHER CLIENT introduces any of these:
- The "Remote Commands Interpreter" / RCI Scripting
- The automatic Answering machine facilities. Working while you are out, replying to messages and/or sending files.
- The RAS control features
- The Macros (Variables) handling.
- The Message Templates with Variable handling.
- Many smaller features that seem to become the natural when you have used them in TMC.
Not to mention the upcoming Newbies:
- The WYSIWYG HTML-editor, to create HTML messages WITH images. We will also make this editor avaialable as a freeware, standalone program for HTML creation and editing.
- The Voice mail feature we are currently adding.
- Many others.
We also will be adding, within a couple of months, Fax messages. This way you will be able to add to the addressbook individuals that do not have emails but as they have Fax machines the system will determine how to send. F.ex. when send a message to a group of individuals the system will send emails to those that have email addresses, otherwise it will send faxes....
I have been wondering if I should make a smaller version avaiable for free or a tiny amount, thus leaving out all the automation features. I am still wondering...
The volume of downloads has increased significantly. I am not much of a marketing guy and i am not much in on how to market products on the Net. Before version 3 i did not want to start any great marketing plans. But now as we are posting the pre-releases of version 3.25 which will add the features i really have been waiting for the due-time of, i am in the position of staring to gather infos for marketing plans.
TransSoft's position regarding other products:
TransSoft has the most popular Hotel Management system in Iceland. 75% of all computerized hotels here have TransSoft's HMS, called "Manor". This is so inspite of the fact that most all other HMS creators have come to the country introducing their products. We are to post a new version of the HMS this spring, a VERY special product, different from other HMS system in most every way.
TransSoft also owns the only known communication system for Omron cash registers made for windows.
Other products are mostly specially made, large systems that need to be changed for each installation because of their nature.
Is TransSoft strictly an Icelandic operation or are you a "virtual company"?
Answer: TransSoft is ME, and i am TransSoft - and i am Icelandic! = TransSoft is strictly an Icelandic operation.
I work in this way: I slice time between projects. I try to make as long periods for each project that i am working on. If i am to get away from a project for a while i try to create a detailed description on what to do and how to do things, and hand over to my companions i talk about on my homepage, to keep the project from stopping. These companions are individuals, working fulltime elsewhere, but tightly standardized into my code and available for me at all times.
I would be more than happy to see a feature list comparison of all the mailers. Maybe Stroud or some other freelance individual would make this kind of comparison.
Let me know if you need more information!!
Thanks,
Bjorn

OK!
First, there is Fridjon Gudjohnsen. He is an emplyee at the icelandic "Radar agency" - computer center. He is also a student, studying Computer Science of cause. He also previously had a degree from the USA concerning his job.
His main object for me was the external PGP control programming: The Behind-spawning and output spying of a DOS based application. He did a great job there and is still advancing it.
He is extremely thorough in all he does, code is well kept and organized.
He can be reached through fridjon@itn.is but he does not have a webpage.
I'll check and see if he'll be here in this topic!
Second, there is Hordur Johannsson. He currently is a webmaster at http://www.firmnet.is.
A general working horse, he is. - 24 hours of work is nothing...., we are looking at a lot longer time here..
His job for me is programming standardized procedures and dialogs.
He is a very standardized figure, always sniffing for the short cuts in his programming.
Fridjon, at least, will be participating here within the next 24 hours!

Well, first of all let me introduce myself. I am 29 years old electronics technician and I currently work in the maintenance of radar systems. I have however, always had a big interest in programming and have been programming, in one form or another for the last 15 years or so :=). I am now going to university studying computer science and I have just finished the first semester.
Toanswer the question about if conventional email is secure it is, simply said, not secure. The mail that one sends goes through at least 4 computers and usually many more.
First, the message is written on the senders computer, then it is sent to the senders mail server, the senders mail server sends it to the recipients mail server and from there it is sent to the recipients computer.
How can then someone read your email ? Well, the person does not need to bug your phone, or break into your house, they can simply read the mail at either of the mail servers. In order to do that, that person must have special access to the mail-server, which would mean that he/she is either an employee for the internet service provider, or a hacker that has broken in there.
But there is also another security problem related to email :
Anyone can send mail to you, pretending to be someone else. There is no guaranty that the sender of a message you receive, is really the one that you think. What all email client programs do, when they send mail is that they connect to the mail server, tell it that they have a message from John Doe and then send the message. There is no checking that the mail is really coming from whom they claim to be.
PGP attempts to overcome these limitations of conventional email security and can provide both encryption (scrambling the message so that unauthorized persons can read it) and authenticity (assurance that the message is really coming from its sender).
How does PGP work ? It is based upon a system called public key encription. Public key encryption uses two keys. First there is a secret key that only the sender has. Secondly, there is a public key that the sender distributes to everyone that wants to send him messages. This public key is used to encrypt messages to the the person with the secret key. The only way to decrypt a public key-encrypted message is to use the secret key (It is impossible to decrypt a public key-encrypted message with the public
key). This means that if someone was reading all your email, both your incoming, and your outgoing mail, he or she, would not be able to decrypt messages to you. This is true even if that person has your public key, because the public key can not be used to decrypt messages.
There is a lot of information about PGP available on the WWW. Here are some :

A site with information on Cryptosystems in general
An excellent introduction to PGP

Just letting you know about a new pre-release update. This one is great!!!
I'll leave here a part of a message that was sent to my News-subscribers:
---------- From the Newsletter: ------------
The new release implements 2 great new features that no other mailer implements in such way or any way for that matter. The features are:
1. HyperText Markup Language (HTML) Viewing Pane. You can now view HTML
messages just like you where in your browser, with inline images, all fonts,
forms, tables etc, etc....
We will be adding to this feature in the nearest future, allowing you to
use the viewing pane in the manner of your browser, enlarged and hot-linked,
serving remote http:// links and FTP requests.
When you have downloaded the new release you can test the viewer by sending
us a message with the subject as: "Show-HTML" and you will receive a message
which demonstrates a small portion of the HTML-viewer's capabilities.
You are also able to view the HTML message in your default web-browser by
clicking the right-mouse button over the viewing-pane and select "View in
your browser" topic.
2. HTML-wizard. This feature allows HTML-novices to send sophisticated HTML
messages without having to type in a single HTML tag or command. This wizard
asks you for Header and subHeader along with background image or background
color. The second screen in the wizard allows composing of the new message,
with your previously made templates, signatures and optional spell checking.
As with the HTML-Viewing-Pane we will be adding aggressively to the wizard,
allowing you to use the same features as with RTF (no Plain-Text) formatted
messages, placing images on fixed spots, adding tables from inside the editor
and more.
Note that when you have created a HTML message and if you have selected
images there, you can move them and/or copy in the original Message-Editor on
return.
For example if you would like a picture of you to be located near your name
you would do something like this:
Smith Carlisle
The new release fixes previous bugs. F.ex. a problem with Voicemail,
resulting in recording failure. Other fixes has also been made but we
can not guarantee a bug free beta release as the system is continuously
under development.
------------------------------------------------------
Hope you like it!
Anyway, the mailer allows you to make HTML message and receive and view complex HTML messages with the ability of full-blown Browser. ...Including Tables, tags, intdents, forms, etc.
Hope you'll download it soon Terry!
Please let me know what you think!

Well, I have evaluated Transoft Mail Control off and on for a few months now, and am very pleased with the program, personally. My recent system crash pulled me away from working with this program, but I am pleased to see that Bjorn is still working hard on it! I can't wait to try the new features and send him a check!

I recently downloaded TransSoft Mail Pro 3.0 (beta). It seems like a great program with lots of useful features. But I want to be able to read HTML formated mail with TransSoft. So far, any HTML mail appears as just text.
Have I not configured something properly? I was told that this new version of TransSoft could display HTML mail in a browser like fashion. (like Netscape displays mail from their In-Box direct program)
Thanks in advance

Update: Paul was using thre previous version, 3.0 while the beta release 3.25 has the option of HTML messages viewing/composing/browsing and more.
Terry: I noticed that you were having trouble with installation of the mailer?
Would you email me informations about this please?
Plus: I am currently adding a few things that i will have in the version 3.25 final. One of these is the "Priority Marking" of the messages, one of the wishes you had on your list!!
Let me know the details!
Thanks!

I'll keep trying to run it under NT and send you my notes. I'm switching
near all my machines to NT 4.0.

Terry: I checked and saw that there are several users with TMC on NT 4.0 withour problems. I counted up to 30 and then stopped. So there can easily be hundreds.
Can it be that the machine you have has not got the RAS installed (Remote Access Services). If so, you can install it through the Network icon and if you do not have a modem, you can associate the RAS with a com to com protocol. (Cheating the RAS). Please check this out and let me know!
Send how it goes to me!

It does not yet have ras intalled. I'll do that now. But I'm on a LAN
without a phone line. Special instructions for this? Do you know of a
ras tutorial on the net anywhere?

Hi, well I have been reading all the info and comments on this forum and I would love to try EMC Pro.. Now I am using NT 3.51 Workstation on a standard build. Wen I go to install, its fine, unfortunately when I start the program I get asked for nearly all the RAS .Dll files!!
Now I know how to expand these files from the NT CD rom, but am to understand that anyone that has any intentions of installing this app under NT will have to do the same.
Believe me it's a very tedious way of expanding and copy the .dll files and I now have one file; RASMAN.DLL that has failed. God knows why as it has been taken from a brand new NT CD rom..
I hate to say this but if i was a standard home user I would have given up long ago.. Is there not any way in the install pocess you can ask:
a) what platform are you using.
b) where is your system directory.
At least that way if the user is on NT then you could include the relavant NT .DLL files, and make sure that the files you include in the install program are yours and are known to work..
So far I have as yet to even start the app. I have searched all the servers for the RASMAN.DLL file in my entire Company Corporation.. and no joy..
can any one help.........

Well, heres an update on my attempt on this software. I have now managed to unpack all the files that seem to be required under this app. I now have one last hurdle.
Here's the fault code:
The procedure entry point QueueUserAPC could not be allocated in the Dynamic Link Library Kernel32.dll. There is no way that I'm going to change this file
as if I do then I cannot guarantee how stable my NT build will be. I can replace it with the current 3.51 file, but it doesn't like it.
I can try the NT4 workstation CD Rom but whether it will boot up correctly I don't know. Some how I think it wont work and I don't want to have to go through the recovery preedure.
Can Bjorn offer somemore help. I would try this software on my 95 machine at home and I will try it on my NT4 box but I really do have some doubts about it's
viable installation. Can I ask what systems this has been installed and tested on.
I even havre gone as far as installing the RAS service on my NT3.51 box and still no joy?
hope to hear back soon.
Tony

Hi There
I think this conference is a little slow for the moment.
I, as many others, find TMC Pro 3,25 the greatest mailclient on the net.
I'm looking forward to use the PGP interface, but i'm not able to make it work on my NT 4.0. I Hope Bjrn vil help me soon. (Keeps knocking on heavens door :-)
If you are using TSM on NT 4.0, here is an advice.
Is TMC make the internetconnection via RAS, the other internet programs like browsers and other might not be able to see the connection. To solve this problem you can add a shortcut to Dial-Up Networking Monitor to the Startup folder. This will make the NT RAS see, when TMC is making an connection, and all other programs will recordnice the connection as well.

Hello All!
Sorry for the delay in getting here! This conference had been a bit low on issues for a few months so eventually i stopped checking it out! :o)
....and when i did, my previous login name "bubbi" did not work???
Why is that Terry??
I am hoping that all issues concerning NT problems have been fixed in the latest release 3.25.i - and i am hoping the the final version of TMC will be out later this week or early next!
You can download an upgrade by means of "Help/Download latest..." from within TMC or you can get a new installation from either of my sites:
http://www.transsoft-is.com/
or http://www.centrum.is/transsoft
Thanks for the hint Thomas!
Let me know how it's going!

I'm going to be doing some heavy duty NT testing when it comes out and working on
setting up the Spring's Transsoft site. I have set aside some time to work on this
and get this going (finally!). I'll also be doing some performance tuning on our
servers, one of which will be a testbed for TransSoft Mail Control.
Expect some extensive lists of suggestions for enhancements in upcoming versions as
soon as I enter the test phase. In my opinion, Microsoft has missed the boat in their
mail program released with IE 4.0. As far as I can tell, it wipes messages off of the
server without even giving the user a choice of saving. I'm pretty sure this is true
of the "Outlook" mail program released with Office 97. At any rate, I am gaining a good
perspective on where the mail client market is going and will have some suggestions for
TransSoft which, hopefully, will put it in a dominant position vis a vis Microsoft,
Netscape, Pegasus and Eudora.

This is sort of a test message, in response to Terry's request. But I'm a big fan and a user of
TransSoft Mail Control despite its relative slow response speed.

TransSoft Mail has to be the BUGGIEST program I have EVER downloaded & setup. It would not run for over a few minutes without GPF's,most of them different!!
Plus, after at least three detailed bug reports,I've yet to get a reply, let alone any help, from the so called "customer-support".
I suggest, instead of trying to hang with the "big boys",TransSoft go back to the basic's & start over.
jb
Btw,I went ahead & ordered Eudora Pro 32bit ($39.00usd).Best mail client, bar none,I've EVER had the pleasure to run.

Bjorn Heidarr Gudmundsson would be horrified to hear that his tech
support is slipping, because I've known him to be extremely responsive.
In addition to that, he's constantly innovating and adding new features.
For example, he just added data migration facilites for Eudora and Netscape.
Perhaps he'll check in and address this, I know that he checks in on this
discussion.

Hi Paul and all!
Yes, I do check in here once in a while to see if there are any new topics around or new messages to this discussion!
I have to admit, Paul that the last 4-5 weeks, our support has gone way under because of flooded mailboxes we experienced when TMC version 4 BETA was announced on the Internet. Everyone seemed to be asking questions and our registered users wanted new keys for the new version and a large number of them offered BETA testing and gave large reports. What we *HAD TO DO* was to sort out all emails and prioritize them - and we decided to support all registered users before assisting any evaluators of TMC. By no
things are getting back to normal again though...
TMC 3.50 had problems on some machines. Most of those were related to third party Screendrivers. The reason: In TMC 3.50 we go far beyond normal use of the screen and some of our techniques are simply not accepted by some screendrivers.
TMC 3.50 also used A LOT of resources while executing. This is known to cause some problems on machines with less resources to provide.
However, all in all: TMC 3.50 does implement all it's features well and without problems. We cannot however test with all those thousands of screendrivers around. We have over 100 BETA testers worldwide and when we have their clearence we post our projects to the web. We normally try and help those in trouble evaluating although some times are tougher than others.
Version 4 BETA is however free of all this problem of resources and screens. The new version only takes approx. 1/4th of 3.50's resources and there are no known problems with third-party screendrivers.
The only thing I can do regarding Redman's posting is to ask him to pardon us while we go through these frustrating weeks of finalizing the version.
FYI Paul: The next and we hope last BETA will be posted tomorrow night to our sites. Feel free and check it out!
Keep in touch Paul!
Kindest regards,
Bjorn, TransSoft
