Speak Freely -- Speak Freely is another application that allows (near) real-time voice communication over the 'net in half or full duplex mode (depending on your sound equipment). One distinguishing feature of Speak Freely is its freeware status; others include three methods of encryption for conversations (PGP, IDEA - International Data Encryption Algorithm, and DES - Data Encryption Standard), four real-time compression types (simple, GSM - Global System Mobile, ADPCM - Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation, and LPC - Linear Predictive Coding), an answering machine for receiving and storing messages, a Show Your Face feature for letting people see who they're talking to, and a Look Who's Talking server feature for finding people to talk to. While both encryption and compression are supported, the resources needed for each are quite high and require a high-end 486 at minimum. However, for those without the bandwidth or with a concern for privacy and with the necessary hardware, these two features can be quite appealing. Speak Freely for Windows is always 100% compatible with Speak Freely for Unix, allowing communication across platforms for the first time. For its support of encryption, compression, and cross-platform compatibility, coupled with solid near real-time voice communication, Speak Freely is an app that will please many netizens. Pros: Encryption and compression supported for real-time voice communication on the 'net Cons: Not as fast or easy to use as WebPhone and Internet Phone New: 'Show Your Face' capability -- lets people see who they're talking to, Windows 95 release Version Reviewed: Windows 3.x - 6.0. Does Speak Freely or any other voice-chat program support a hardware-based ADPCM encoder...My girlfriend has a 14.4k connection and a 486sx25, but her soundcard is capable of ADPCM. What I want to do is set up a voice chat program so we can talk when I'm off at school. I'll have a dedicated connection on my end so all she'll have to do is type in my IP. Any Advice?
