conferences | apps conference | browser topics http://www.netscape.com ftp://ftp12.netscape.com/pub/navigator/gold/3.0/3.0b6/g3230b6s.exe Netscape Gold 32-bit Version 3.0 Beta 6s (Size 6184 Kb) Description Netscape Navigator 3.0 Beta 5a with inline WYSIWYG editing capabilities Status Expires September 17, 1996. Commercial Gold v3.0 Price $87.77 Also Available 16-bit version and 32-bit Minimum version (3719 Kb - lacks plug-ins) Netscape Navigator Gold -- The Gold release of Netscape Navigator offers all the same great features found in the standard version plus the added capability of inline WYSIWYG web editing. While the initial release of the Gold client is limited to primarily HTML 2 editing, it is still quite powerful and offers a glimpse into what is likely to become a very impressive editor. Additionally, the Newly released Atlas Gold client (the heir apparent to Netscape Gold 2.0) incorporates HTML 3 features as well, including inline editing of tables. Inline editing gives webmasters the ability to create, edit, and view web documents all from within one central interface. The Netscape Gold editor offers full support for most Netscape 1.x tags, but it does currently have problems handling forms, frames, plug-ins, and more. In addition, as of yet there are no tools for creating attractive backgrounds and there is no UNDO button for quickly backstepping mistakes. What could perhaps be Netscape Gold's most impressive feature, a one-click button to automatically upload and save HTML documents to a remote location, is also noticeably absent in this release. Netscape Gold already has the built-in power and excellent functionality of the best web browser on the market and the potential to feature a comparable web editor, but for now, a standalone editor like HotDog or Kenn Nesbitt's WebEdit coupled with Netscape Navigator standard is likely to be your best bet. Improved support for frames and tables capitalize on one of the few weaknesses in the 3.0 release. Netscape 3.0 also integrates several of the best available plug-in modules into the client, including a basic audio module for playing files of AIFF, MIDI, WAV, and AU sound formats; Live 3D for viewing VRML realms and experiencing distributed, interactive 3D spaces complete with text, images, animation, video, sound, and music; a video module for playing inline AVI videos; and a helper application called CoolTalk that allows for real-time full-duplex audio conferencing. The Newest version also brings support for Java to PowerMac and Unix users for the first time. Pros: Same great features as found in the standard Netscape release plus web editing capabilities Cons: Lacks many important web editing features, including support for Netscape 2.0 extensions New: Table editing has been added, New shortcut keys, more Version Reviewed: 3.0 Beta 5 Date of Review: 6/29/96 Reviewer: Forrest Stroud

Today's "What's New" list says there is a Navigator Gold 3.0 beta 7 available, but the link takes you to beta 6. Is there a beta 7?
~netman #2
In response to Suellen's question, I have only seen Navigator 3.0 beta 7 in the whats new list not Navigator Gold.
~buzz #3
Also in response to Suellen's question, the 3.0 Beta 7 has been released for the standard version of Netscape Navigator (Win 3.x, Win 95, and Mac) but not yet for the Gold release...hopefully it will be released within the next several days...

I had been pleased with the speed increases of the Beta 5 version I had downloaded for my daughter's Win 3.1 computer so I jumped right from Ver2.02 to Ver 3 Beta 6 but somehow ended up with all kinds of problems including not configuing correctly to load the homepage I requested and I have had all kinds of messages about incorrect URLs even after having just used the same URL on previous searches. I noticed that the update to version 3.0 Beta 7 only took a few days so maybe there were more bugs created than fixed! I hope it is worth the download time to update to Beta 7 - Why can't programs like Netscape just allow the upgrade patches from one Beta ersion to the next to be downloaded instead of the entire program having to be downloaded each time. - What a waste of online time and it must create enormous problems on bandwidth for all the ISP's every time a revision of Netscape is issued - which is very often!

Netscape is a great program and one of the best browsers I have seen. There are some bugs that even Netscape can`t seem to solve such as downloads not completing and error messages for url`s which are known to be good url`s. If anyone is having download problems please email me (flyboy@telplus.net) and let me know if you have found a cure. I will pass this information along to various users groups and help as many people out as possible. Please make sure to report any bugs no matter how insignificant you may think they are to Netscape so they can work them out and make life easier for all of us.

I have very few problems with it. The only persistant problem I have seen is that over a few months time, under Win95, the startup of the program would create a "ghost" of the program in the Start Menu. This "ghost" is just that, a blank menu icon would be on the start bar but nothing would actually be there. As for peformance. Super! As for their many updates... Why NOT? I would rather have a company sriving to to give you their latest and greatest, instead of one that would sit on its laurels and bill you. As for patches... They originally started off doing that. But the way I see it... the BETA versions are "free". WHY complain?

I've given up trying nongold netscape because everytime I installed one, it trashed my mail client. Answer: Netscape Gold. Ever since Netscape started playing around with MAPI, there's been hell to pay for us lowly users. Maybe someday they'll wake up...... Jacques P.

I've found NetScape's limited newsreader to be adequate for the limited news browsing that I do, and it decodes single file UUE files just fine. Is there a way to make it combine and decode multiple part files? If so, I haven't been able to find it.

I'm a very happy user of Netscape Navigator Gold Edition and I'm very careful about its new releases so you can download the latest version (currently BETA 8) in my Home Page http://dante.enter.it/maranghi/mauita.html

I was looking to comment about the "commercial" release of the 16-bit version for Win 3.1 in its own topic but since I saw this I'll comment here. from Gordon Wick: "I had been pleased with the speed increases of the Beta 5 version I had downloaded for my daughter's Win 3.1 computer so I jumped right from Ver2.02 to Ver 3 Beta 6 but somehow ended up with all kinds of problems including not configuing correctly to load the homepage I requested and I have had all kinds of messages about incorrect URLs even after having just used the same URL on previous searches. I noticed that the update to version 3.0 Beta 7 only took a few days so maybe there were more bugs created than fixed! I hope it is worth the download time to update to Beta 7" My software appears to work completely but the decrease in speed from NN2.0 to NN3.0 is incredible! (This may be irrelevant for 32 bit version users, since the above comment was clearly by a fellow Win 3.1 user) Using 33.6 bps modem on a 486DX-33 with 12 MB RAM, it went from 5 seconds to download my home page to over six minutes - I don't bother loading the home page any more (if I can jump past it) My notebook [14.4 bps modem on a 486DX-66 with 8 MB RAM] is the same as always, so mostly I'm just using it now. By the way, that means normal transfer rates of 1.1-2.0 kbps for the 14.4 using NN3.0 versus 0-1.2 kbps for the 33.6 using NN3.0, whereas I used to get 1.2-3.6 kbps for the 33.6 using NN2.0 After two weeks I'm considering whether I should keep looking for the source of the problem, reload my old NN2.0 or now if maybe the Gold version will work better. I downloaded a PPP Diagnostic program this evening to see if I can find the problem. So far, the suggestions have been "get at least 16MB RAM (spend more money)" or "change the TCP/IP PPP settings" that last sounded interesting but I can't find them in the TCP/IP PPP bundled with Netscape personal edition dialer.

I just got the full version of NSG3.0 and discovered that it won't play .au format sound files for me. I get some kind of "format not supported" message. Others claim it works for them, so it must be something in my setup. Anyone have any ideas where I should look? The plugins page under HELP reports that .AU support is active. A real head scratcher.

Did you know that Netcape 4.0 is out?
~gilcarvr #15
yes Terry, but I'm loathe to have to start at the beginning until I figure out how to get the old one to work first...we aren't interested in html or vrml as of yet and I can't see why I need the new version yet...does it make mail retrieval easier?...ftp easier?...news?...and whats with all the names...collabra... messenger...et all?....does this mean I just takes parts of the release?...can you tell I'm frustrated? Mial is much improved, especially the sorting mechanism. I haven't played with the newsgroups much. Overall, it's an improvement over the previous version. I did see an article in the Austin paper yesterday where Netscape has endorsed ichat and is getting out of the chat game.
~Neptune #17
1) Tom, what was that about password option? If your referring to your Email setup, it is a block that gets checked under Email Options or Network Options. 2) In 4.0 Beta, the news and mail software is greatly improved. I have had occasional problems with the beta version crashing about once a week but the new features make it well worth it. There is still many more features that will be further added to the program making it even better. I miss the 3.0 version for it reliability, but 4.0 kicks butt now and will be many times more powerful when completed.
