WinQVT and QVT/Net -- WinQVT is good suite package featuring
integrated an excellent terminal application, as well as ftp, news,
network printing, and mail services. WinQVT supports both ftp
client and server capabilities. QVT/Net for Windows 95 and NT
3.51 is the latest and greatest release of WinQVT and offers
additional apps, including a gopher client, a RCP server, and a
SMTP server. QVT/Net also departs from WinQVT's integrated
launchpad; each application must instead be individually launched.
Both clients have an extremely easy to use telnet client that
supports VT52/VT102/VT220 terminal emulation. QVT/Net's
gopher client is smooth, efficient, and easy to use even though it
does lack the graphically appealing interface found in many
standalone gophers. The terminal client is capable of supporting up
to 15 simultaneous virtual terminal sessions; this client is reviewed
in more detail in the terminal applications section. The news service
allows for offline/online news-reading, as well as including kill-file
and quick purge capabilities. The mail service supports SMTP and
POP3 send and receive mail with background polling. There is also
a built-in deamon for SMTP. WinQVT costs $40 (only $20 for
students) and QVT/Net is $45, but both are worth the price.
Registered users receive an 85-page manual and custom fonts. The
unregistered version also comes with extensive on-line help and a
large readme file.
Pros: Good suite of services, strong terminal application client
Cons: No single service (other than terminal emulation) stands out,
lacks a web browser
New: QVT/Net offers additional features including a gopher client
and RCP/SMTP servers
Version Reviewed: WinQVT - 3.98.15. QVT/Net - 4.0.2
