DynamIP is a completely free multi-functional internet utility. Its four major
features include an IP chat engine (like using IRC, but without the need for an
IRC server), IP scanning (especially useful for posting your dynamic IP address
to web pages), background e-mail monitor (periodically checks for new mail on up
to 5 different mailboxes), and a time synchronization tool (synchronizes your PC
clock with the correct Internet time by connecting with an NTP server).
DynamIP's IP scanning feature is most useful for those whose internet address
frequently changes (especially for those without dedicated lines). DynamIP will
post your dynamic address to web pages and then automatically upload those files
via FTP. The client also supports up to five connections for those with
multiple internet providers. With DynamIP's chat feature, you can input a range
of IP addresses to scan and the client will find any users within those numbers
that are also using DynamIP. You can then send messages to all of these users
or to a specific user. DynamIP presents a solid selection of configurable
options for each of its features and does so with an intuitive, easy to use
interface.
Additional features include its ability to run minimized in the Windows 95 icon
tray in order to reduce taskbar clutter, tracking capabilities of all events and
actions in a log file for your later use, event notification (customizable
sounds to alert you when a new event occurs), AutoSense (keeps DynamIP fron
running mail checks when you're not connected), and AutoRefresh (gets new IP
addresses for you after a disconnect or redial). DynamIP is a multi-threaded
32-bit application that will only run on Windows 95/NT platforms; for those with
dynamic addresses running either of these two operating systems, DynamIP is an
excellent app to have.
Pros: Dynamic IP scanning, solid background mail checking with multiple mailbox support, very versatile
Cons: Mainly of use only to those with dynamic IP addresses, lacks ability to download incoming mail

I looked at their web page
http://www-leland.stanford.edu/~cmu/DynamIPsetup.htm#requirements
and it has some very detailed technical information about how all this works.
I'm very curious about how DynamIP will post your dynamic address to web pages
and then automatically upload those files via FTP. I'd be interested
in hearing from Forrest, from the users of this software and from the authors
about this feature. What are some examples of how this is being used?
I'd suggest you look at their web page before downloading this as there
are quite a few caveats and requirements that you need to know about
before using this app.
As far as getting your time from your isp, don't. Get it from the Naval
Observatory. I wouldn't trust some geek at your neighborhood isp with
having the right system time. Would you? Of course, if I'm wrong and DynamIP
does get your time from a more reputable source than your local isp, then I
stand corrected.
If you want the time, get Netdate v2.02 for Win32 by Steeve McCauley.
It's free and it snatches the time from the Naval Observatory.
http://www.cam.org/~oneguy for Netdate.

Look at
http://www.missouri.edu/~c640902 for an example of
what happens. It only uploads the html file that you want updated.
It reads the HTML file and replaces a set of dummy variables you
specify. In my case, it replaces NOT.ON.LINE.NOW (in both places)
with my IP address. The last updated date is a dummy variable replaced
each time DynamIP uploads.
The time updater defaults to a naval server, I think.

Greetings all!
I've been tinkering around with DynamIP too. I had all the bugs worked out untill I relocated the directory and somehow lost some of those *.ocx files. Oh well, I should be able to fix that up tomorrow.
Terry; You ask how this is being put to use? I use it for CoolTalk so that I don't have to be logged into a server. That way it kinda limits the number of folks calling me. Too many people call and I can always change the URL and give it out to family and such.
One feature that I wish it had is a feature I found in a similar program called "OnLine" version 1.9. It does the same basic thing as DynamIP does but has nothing near the power of DynamIP. The feature it has is a thing called "NetNote". I think it is like a small builtin html/www server. Someone comes to my online page, types a message into a form field, submits, and they get a new web page loaded. I get the message and a spot to reply. My reply is sent the the new web page that the sender received when
he/she submited the form. Very neat!
I like it so much because my daughter is sometimes very limited on what she can do on the internet by her step-father. When she is allowed to use the browser only, NetNote gives us the ability to still chat somewhat.
Does anyone know if there is an app that I can set up to do the same thing with DynamIP?
If I didn't make myself very clear about the NetNote, you can check it out at
http://www.4dcomm.com/~rrhubott/rhusoft.html
My online page is located at url
http://www.gnt.net/~parsonsj/online.html
Keep in mind that if I haven't fixed my DynamIP yet then you'll see the screen from OnLine v1.9.
Take care all.

You have a template file that DynamIP reads and replaces variables with
current info such as time and IP address. It then uploads the output file
to your web site. You can see an example on my personal webpage at
http://edge.edge.net/~billmeek/ . Click on the link "Is Bill Online???".
(Note - The first time you load my webpage, it might take awhile. It'll

You specify where DynamIP is to get the correct time from in the

I work for an Internet Service provider, and many times I will leave my computer logged in from home with both my FrontPage web server and my ftp server running. I am constantly getting and sending files from my office to my home system, and this app makes it far easier to check what my IP address is.
It's not unknown for my system to drop it's connection, (we have a 1 hour no activity time-out), and when the redialer kicks in my IP address will change. This way I don't have to go fishing through our connect logs to see what my number is. I just check out my web page kept on our main server.
I kave placed a link from my home page to the DynamicIP default page, (Which I have modified), and from there you can visit my little web server.

Howdie All,
I'm running DynamIP 2.4 and have had some problems with one thing.
First of all, I've got two ports on this machine. One is a dial-up connection to my ISP via 28.8k USR Sportster. This port has the dynamically assigned IP Number that I want to have posted remotely.
I also have a second port connected to our local LAN via 10mb Ethernet. This port has a static internal IP Number of 200.0.0.11 My WebSite & FtpServer are running on a remote Local LAN machine at 200.0.0.12 I am running WinGate on my local computer, so when users connect to my IP Address, they come in through the modem connected to my machine and get transferred over the Ethernet to my secondary "Server Machine".
Well, I update two (2) remote web pages with DynamIP. One is at GeoCities and this one is first in succession. This is the page that users connect to from the Internet. I also update a simple .TXT file on the remote server at 200.0.0.12 on my local lan. This text file gets used to display my current IP Number to people that are viewing my WebSite.
Well, if I leave DynamIP up and running for an extended period of time, I seems to revert to the IP Number of the Ethernet port on my pc. Every time this has happened, I've been away from my computer for more than an hour or so... I have no idea why this happens, but when I get home, I see the remote page at GeoCities showing my current IP Number as 200.0.0.11, which of course nobody will ever be able to get to... :)
What I'm suspecting is happening, is that GeoCities is down for a few moments. At that time, DynamIP is "autosensing"... And from what I can tell, DynamIP gets the current IP Number by pinging the remote host, then pulling the IP Number out of the response packet from the ping. Well, when DynamIP can't get to GeoCities, it tries to ping the second remote host and promptly gets a response from my "secondary server" on the local LAN. This response packet comes back via the Ethernet port with the IP of 2
0.0.0.11
So, up until this time, I've left DynamIP in my DUN AutoStart (via Dunce), and let it run the first time, then I just close it down. It's still ran by Dunce if I get disconnected and it re-connects automatically. But if I'm not arround, after about 4-5 hours or so, it re-posts my IP to GeoCities as 200.0.0.11 I would realy like to just leave the thing up and running full time, but have not figured out a solution to this.
If anyone else has had a similar problem, please let me know if you found a way arround it...
Thanks!

Help! I attempted to install DynamIP but without success. I dl MS control tools beta2 and dl DynamIP v2.6 as well as v2.7. According to the programmer web page the controls package should come w/the *.ocx files but upon executing dynamip it kept requesting these files. I also dl several of them ftpct.ocx, richtx32.ocx, winsck.ocx, etc and used the regsvr32.exe but received an error when doing so. Can anyone help me?

Harmony,
MS ICP beta2 might have trouble installing some of the controls
(*.ocx files) if they are in use. It's definitely a good idea
to shut down all the other programs before you install the MS ICP.
If the normal installation process is not able to register the
controls and you can't register them manually either, then you
might have to delete the appropriate registry entries, reboot
Windows, delete the *.ocx files, and finally try to reinstall
the ICP again. Problems with the ICP beta 2 are really out of
my control, but most people get it to work after some trying ;-)
If DynamIP reports other missing files, then you can get them
from
http://www.stanford.edu/~cmu/DynamIPsetup.htm#installationtrouble.

According to the Help facility, "As soon as you start DynamIP it figures out whether you're connected to the Internet or not." As soon as I start it, it just sits there with "Disconnected" showing in the lower left hand corner. I've double checked that the Internet Control Pack is installed, and all DynamIP files are in place. Earlier errors indicated I had to download richtx32.ocx, and then comctl32.ocx, and run regsrv32 to get them in the registry; but now DynamIP just sits there dumbly with no error in
ication.
Any chance the problem is that I've installed DynamIP on my D: drive, while \windows\system is on C:? I wouldn't expect this to be a problem, and have successfully installed quite a few apps this way.
Note that I'm a career software professional who even remembers when this was the arpanet, but this one has me baffled. I'm obviously connected, else how did I post this? Has anyone else seen/solved this one?

John,
The "Disconnected" in the lower left corner (which is called
left pane of the status bar) means only that currently none
of the DynamIP services has established a connection. If you're
connected then DynamIP shows your current IP address in the
top left field (just to the left of the button "Refresh IP".
For this to happen you must define at least 1 active connection
handle or 1 active POP mail acccount. If you're not connected
DynamIP will say so in the 2nd field from the top just below
the IP field (which should say 127.0.0.1).
Hope that helps,
Chris

Chris,
Editing the registry is only for "advanced" users. Before you attempt playing around with the registry you should definitely make a BACKUP of your registry files (you might have to reinstall Windows if things go badly wrong!!!). You might also want to read a bit about the registry at
http://www.creativelement.com/win95ann/registry.html. I might also add some more info to the DynamIP site.

Hey Chris!
Nice product, but....
It goes as follows:
1. I lose connection to my ISP.
2. DynamIP turns purple, displays localhost address 127.0.0.1
3. RAS reials and gets connected.
4. DynamIP reports "Run Time Error 1048
Address in use"
Have to click o.k. then restart it.
This error just kills the automatic reconnect functionaly. Happens every time without exception.
Any ideas?
Platform NT4.0 WKS, everything else works fine.

could never register these damn ocx files, and I tried a lot of things (I have been playing in computers for a long time and I know what I am doing)
All that it did finally is that there is a missing dll in my system windows dir required at the startup of w95 : msvcirt.dll
I cannot find it on my desktop PC, where by luck I didnt try to install this software,
anyone could send it to me as an attachment ?

Csaba: Error 1048 (address in use) is currently unresolved. It should
affect people with multiple IP addresses on their system (e.g.
static LAN plus a dynamic dial-up).
Frank: It is not quite obvious from your post which part of the
installation is causing problems. A precondition for running
DynamIP is that you can successfully install Microsoft's ICP
beta 2. There are unfortunately quite a few issues with that
installation pack, and one thing you could try is to delete
all registry entries refering to controls that come with the
ICP (check out the DynamIP home page
for more info.
Once you've installed these controls there are only 4 more
controls left that shouldn't be too hard to install manually.
My apologies for causing grief on your side, but I doubt that
installing DynamIP deleted any files on your machine.
Happy Thanksgiving to all,

If you've read the info regarding DynamIP's future you know that I will be moving away from the MS ICP. I appreciate the freeware, that you're not a professional DynamIP programmer, and that you're continuing to search for WININET.BAS, Chris, but I believe that amongst the bigger fans of your fine app, we could get a groundswell to collect the $250 to get you a nice, shiny new toolbox for xmas (or the spring, when you need it!). Thanks to all of you who e-mailed me hints/tips for WinINet.dll. I have the most important stuff converted and it's working. Still some work to do in order to get the TCP/IP stuff working.
Chris
PS: Hankus, money is not the issue. However, I'm strongly opposed to the strategy of giving away beta controls (MS!!!) and then gauge those who built on them (NetManage). I don't blame anybody but myself for using the controls in the first place, but I'm surely not throwing any money at either company and reward them for this approach. We've got time until March and things are moving along on my side...

Dynamip is to me a very usefull application. One of its attractions was its use of ICP, as i'm doing programming in VB4 + ICP myself. I quite agree with you Chris, regarding your feelings toward MS/NetManage, although I am at the moment considering paying up the 250$ ! I think this Beta looked promising....
I will be very interested in your experiences with WinINet.dll, and would appreciate any hints or links, if you find that this package covers your needs.

First off, a thank you to Chris for writing this fine piece of software.
Now for the punch line. The one and only problem that I've got with DymanIP is the memory foot-print that it has on the system. One day I was curious as to how much memory each of the programs that I run take up. So I started up Norton System Information (from the Norton Utilities) and saw that DynamIP was the largest user of memory on my system, taking up a whopping 6+ megs of memory.
Just to clarify, I love what this program does, but I was just wondering Chris, if there was any way you could trim down the amount of system resources that this "utility" program uses. Yes, it does a lot, but say a person (such as myself) is running their system with 32 megs of ram. DynamIP thens takes up close to 20% of the physical memory just to monitor email and update their web page with the dynamic IP address. Personally I hate on-line chat, so that's pretty useless to me, but the other stuff is
really nice, especially the system tray icon.
Sorry for the rant, but since I don't know what's in your head, I have no idea if you even know about this problem. I realize fully that this is a spare time project and that you receive no compensation for doing it, but if you could figure out this memory foot-print problem, then you surely will gain some amazing experience in programming in doing it.
Later,
Jim

I have installed DynamIP on my computer with no problems. My father and I are using it mainly to be able to find each other when we are both online. My father is having a strange problem where his IP number is listed for 2 min then the box below turns purple and the default IP comes up for 30 sec. After which the correct IP comes back up by itself. The problem with this is that while the box remains purple he can type in the chat box but when he tries to send it will not. After the correct IP comes back u
he is then able to hit return and send the waiting text. He is not using any of the Online Offline FTP or HTTP functions and has that disabled. He only uses the Mail POP function and Chat. Any suggestions out there. We both really like the program, but would like to resolve this one problem. Thanks for and help Steven

I would like to echo the problem that Steven Whitney expressed regarding the Rapid Onset of the Purple Plague. However, in my case our ISP has lost/misplaced/disabled FTP altogether. The DynamIP log files appear to indicate that FTP is tried and fails then a connection to my POP server occurs. Since the IP address is resolved frequently the purple box appears to be related to the check of my POP server and loss of FTP.
Disabling FTP kills the Autosense process altogether. Pointing to some other FTP site fails the autosense test also. Given that not everyone has an ISP-provided FTP (ie, web page hosting elsewhere) this appears to be a problem.
Is there another way to establish a user's IP address without requiring FTP via the local ISP? Well, obviously there is, but how does that affect the rest of DynamIP?
Thanks for the ability to comment (and your willingness to listen) on your excellent, personal gone public, software, Chris!

Billy Colemans comments about the purple box in responce to my message, reminded me that the reason my dad has the online, offline, ftp functions disabled is because his account is purely POP. He has no shell account to which he can upload any files. I do not have the problem and do have a shell account which I have set up. If I remember correctly when I first started using DynamIP I did have the problem and it cured itself when I got the FTP Online and Offline straightened out. Thanks again for any help

I am running DynamIP on a Windows 95 machine along with a FTP server and WinGate. Hi all,
In this message I'm gonna try to address a bunch of questions/concerns:
-------pbb--------
I'm confident that I can do without paying $250 to NetManage. I've made good progress with my own controls and the basic functionality of DynamIP is working without loading any controls of the ICP. I think I'll be able to release a beta version sometime in February that will do w/out ICP alltogether...
I'm not in charge of the Stanford WWW server and since they keep my pages free of charge I'm not really in a position to complain about you not being able my pages. Things are usually a bit slow early in the morning (PST) when they do their updates, but other than that I've found them to be quite reliable...
---------pantera------------
I'm aware of the memory hogging issue. Let me blame it on the ICP (things are better in my current alpha version that does w/out the ICP)...
---------swhitney---/----SergeAhead--------
DynamIP keeps a live connection to either an FTP server or a POP server. That was the only "easy" way to figure out whether a connection exists or not using ICP. This will (hopefully) be changed with my own controls, but for the time being you want to connect to a server that doesn't disconnect you too quickly after you established a connection (POP servers usually kick you within a few minutes, FTP servers let you hang around for quite a while). DynamIP "turns purple" when the connection is lost until a
ew one is established. The "Purple Plague" (I like the name ;-) ) is on my "to do" list, but solving the "ICP desease" is currently more urgent. Thanks for your understanding.
-------SteveMarshall--------
Instead of using the built-in functionality to generate a FTP (or HTTP)-link on your web page you can add the link in your template and put the IP dummy as a place holder for your IP address. E.g. you could have the following in your template (look at the source of this page to see the html code...):
http://NOT.ON.LINE.NOW/AnyPage.htm
When DynamIP updates the template it will also replace the string "NOT.ON.LINE.NOW" with your current IP address and the link will work. The FTP link works pretty much the same. Please refer to any good HTML reference for further details...
All right. I wish you all Happy Holidays,
Chris

Hello
I am having the same problem with the Internet Control Pack not
being able to register the .ocx files. This is apparently a common
problem with the Beta2 of this software because it was the first item
listed in the FAQ I found for the software. Apparently the registry update information in Beta2 is for a different format version of the windows
registry than some of us have. There was a .reg file update but it was
for WinNT and doesn't work on my windows95. So what I am asking is for
anyone who has the Beta2 installed in windows 95 to export the "license"
part of their registry that has the info for the .ocx files in it and
email to me so I can import it into mine. From what I read this should
fix it.. I will post in here and let everyone know if it works or not.
My email address is

My email address is
jbeets@intellisys.net
Thanks

Paul, I don't really have time to write a case study. However, I'm happy to compile one if people e-mail me their stories.
Also, I wanted to thank everybody who e-mailed me bug reports for v3.0 beta 1. I just uploaded beta 2. You can get it from

The bad news is that my motherboard blew up today and it will take a while until I'm back up and running again (Manhattan, as it turns out, is a true wasteland if it comes to computers; it's impossible to find the right stuff...).
Please don't overreact if I'm offline for a while ;-)

I love DynamIP!
Well I did until v3. I got beta2 installed and everything works (with the old .ini file) until I try to see what's new and dare to click on Setup followed by ANYTHING. CRASH! Included is a note about "appropriate licence.../Error 429".
I did EVERYTHING that the trouble-shooting page recommends. After deregistering the 5 controls the only references to the controls was one each under "shared DLLs". I deleted the registry keys (Windows still works! and I know how to put these keys back). I reregistered the controls. Result? Nochange!

I really have gotten a lot of use out of Dynamip and enjoy using it. Unfortunatly I have exactly the same problem with v3b2 as Ed Moskal (error 429). I tried the recommended fixes with no sucess.
Is it possible that the error message is correct and that I don't have an appropriate license? I don't own visual basic.

I've installed V3.0B5 and everything appears to work fine after moving a few of the ocx files to system directory and registering them. My question is concerning the interface. It does not match that of the one displayed on your web page. Everything to the right of the refresh IP button does not exist. The alignment of the numbers for the mail portion are half way covering the envelope button and the red or green line under each connection are probably only one pixel thick. I am not sure if this is the wa
it is supposed to be or if it supposed to look like what is on your web page. By the way it was the same way when i had beta 4. Any suggestions?

Please do not bother with old betas. Get DynamIP v3.0 beta 8 from here. This latest beta fixes lots of problems, especially under NT.
Also, it would be nice if somebody with a static IP address could convince Stroud to change his mind: he still thinks that DynamIP is mainly of use to those with a dynamic IP address. Good counter-examples are WEBchat, IPchat, POP check, etc. which all work just fine on a LAN...
Thanks to all of you who contributed to the 5 "golden" cows from TUCOWS.
To those of you who can't get DynamIP to upload their web page anymore, please read the docu about the new DEL switch (you can choose between overwriting and delete/put). For some people, either setting will work - others must choose one or the other (it all depends on the FTP server you're uploading to...)

Chris,
Thumbs up on the "new and improved" web site! The kids all think that the music Dad 'listens' to is strange though ! Personally, I find it strangely appealing ...
Regarding the use of DynamIP with a static IP ... My wife and I have used DynamIP from a very early edition to communicate between the office (static IP, EvenKeel) and the house (dynamip ... uh, dynamic IP :). I found that it saved a lot on the local long distance bill for those "Hey, would you mind picking up ..." type of calls. Besides, with homeschooling the two oldest and the three younger ones running about, sometimes she just needed some quick support.
I also liked the ability to use the web page to access my home computer to retrieve files that I needed for work (or send files home for working late at night :)
With the changes in the 3.0 versions, I can now take advantage of the email checking and time sync at the ofice without having yet another app to run. In fact, if I were able to track down the RT6 failure when I fail to respond to the WebChat, I would use the auto-online feature to enable chat for non-DynamIP users.
Just a few comments ... I _really_ do admire your efforts at growing this program and yet still maintaining it as freeware. I have considered recommending it to my ISP as software to include in their New User Package.

DynamIP doesn't seem to obtain an IP when I go online. It creates and uploads the html file to my www site, but the IP address is blank. The DynamIP window displays nothing where there should be an IP address. To the right of that field is a bit "D" with green background. Selecting "Refresh IP" does nothing. Other applications seem to be able to get my IP address (in particular, when I go to My Computer, select the properties for my connection icon, then look at Server Type and TCP/IP settings, it sh
ws my current IP address. I have a dynamic IP address (changes with every connection). When I look at the log file, there is a line that says:
2/15/97/11:39:02 AM: IP :
(IP address is blank here, too).
Is there a known problem in getting an IP address with some servers? I have a LARGE ISP (University of Minnesota). Would this make a difference? I once copied a program from a book which was supposed to obtain my IP address, but it had the same problem -- couldn't get it. And yet, I know there are applications which can get it just fine. So, could there be some little-known manner in which an IP address might be obtained?
Thanks

First a "thank you" to Billy. I'm glad you think DynamIP's getting better.
Greg has hit on an issue that needs to be resolved on my side: currently, DynamIP can only determine your IP address if you establish a PPP connection. There's nothing broken, it's been designed like this. However, I do understand that some people use other protocols, and I'm working on a solution.

After being away for a bit, I've discovered that beta 3 has gone to beta 8.
Wow, better than ever!
For those who want to know how I use this:
My family are all over the place but most have access to the Web. Web chat makes a nice, simple way to say hello.
I've retired as a professor but still teach occasionally. Since I'm not regularly in an office but students may still want to discuss something, they can simply see if I'm on line and then immediately get in touch using my IP address and some kind of communication software ( such as DynamIP).
This is getting too long! Thanks again Chris.

Great that even a "Prof" is using DynamIP . Thx for the kudos! Anyway, just wanted to let everybody know that DynamIP v3.0 beta 9 is out. This latest beta should fix most of the problems that were reported with beta 8. Furthermore, I enabled the last batch of options I've been working on:
- DialOnDemand for user selectable dial-up connection
- Hide the annoying "Connected to" window
- template for WEBchat (for those who don't like yellow...)
- enhanced algorithm to determine IP address (should now also work with a bunch of newer devices like cable modem, etc.)
- lots of little things
If you have at least beta 3 installed you can download the upgrade to beta 9 which is only 135KB. Please follow the installation instructions available at

Enjoy,

First, thanks for writing DynamIP. On top of that, making it FREEWARE!
I am using v3.0b9. Install without a hitch. However, istead of FTP to my webpage, my web page is mapped network drive (F:). I setup the "Local File" to to be the mapped drive directory and left the FTP remote host as default. This way it will write the html file to the web server. However, now I always get an FTP Error when it tries to "upload" the html file.
Although this is only a cosmetic problem, I still get satisfactory results, is there a way around this?

Hello,
Just a note to say that all appears to be well in the refresh department now. I didn't really change anything - it just started working!
What I think happened is, you know how when you're testing something and you have run through umpteen different configurations, all to no avail, then you reboot a few times and come back to it fresh, and it works? I think that's what happened.
If I had started out with the configuration settings I finally settled on, it probably would have worked all along. I just had several stops along the way before I finally got there.
Thanks for a fine program, and thanks for your attentiveness in trying to solve my phantom problem!
Cheers!

On Pent Pro 200 dual proc; winnt4.0ws 1381 sp2,

I copied all local files (that I had) which were in

Yet another use for DynamIP
---------------------------
Besides using DynamIP v3.0b11 to post my IP address to a WebPage for Internet Phone purposes, I am also using it in conjunction with Craig Lauer's NotifyMail program (
http://www.notifymail.com) to get instantaneous e-mail notifications. This eliminates the need for programs like Eudora, Pegasus, MS Exchange, etc. to constantly poll the POP3 servers for new mail.
One of the requirements of NotifyMail was a "full (shell) account on a UNIX or VMS machine running a POP server AND a static IP address." Well with DynamIP, you no longer need to have a static IP address because you can now just post your address when you first connect and remove your address when you disconnect from DUN/RAS. After a few hours of tinkering, everything works flawlessly now! You can e-mail me if you have any problems setting this up.
Suggestions
-----------
Chris, the only complaint that I have with the product is its memory usage (Norton SI reports 6.23MB). Here are some suggestions that I have thought up that might help improve the product:
- since people are not always configuring the application when they run it, you can probably improve on it's memory usage by breaking DynamIP into two applications: DynamIP and a Setup program.
- DynamIP would be the exact same as it is now but the Read Configuration & Save Configuration menu items and the Setup menu would be removed.
- the Setup program would then consist of a tabbed Dialog-based application that reads/writes the setup information to/from the INI file.
- by doing this, you can eliminate the need for the Tab control (and depending on where you used it, the Rich Text Edit control too) to be loaded into memory.
- this alone should result in a savings of about 350 - 400K.
- the number of elements on your tab control may also be wasting a lot of memory. If you have separate labels, text edit boxes, check boxes, combo boxes, etc. for each tab then this amounts to a huge waste of memory and resources. You can change this by just having say 20 controls that you would reposition into their appropriate locations when a tab is selected. Of course this is quite difficult to implement and it's complexity might not be worth the hassle. (Please ignore this comment if you are alrea
y doing this.) OR as an alternative, might I suggest changing the interface into one that is similar to that of Explorer's or RegEdit's (i.e. a Tree Control and a List View control with a splitter bar in the middle). So, as the user adds more Launch definitions, Uploader information, etc... you can just add more tree branches to your display.
Chris, if you have any questions/comments or need clarifications on any of these suggestions, please feel free to contact me at:
yu108694@yorku.ca
Keep up the good work!

A quick note to those of you who've been playing around with IE4. When you install IE4 a new version of "wininet.dll" gets installed (v4.71.0544.1). This new version changes the behavior of the FTP engine somewhat (after login a SYST command is issued). If your FTP server doesn't support the SYST command then you might not be able to upload any files anymore because the FTP control aborts if the server doesn't support SYST. DynamIP uses high level commands, i.e. there's no way for me to get around this pr
blem (I simply hope that the MS folks are finally getting their act together).
Other than that, DynamIP should work fine w/ IE4 (at least it does on my machine).

DynamIP can handle this with the "Dial with Timer" functionality. You can specify the times (time intervals) you want DynamIP to establish a connection. It's all explained here.
My advice would be, however, to sign up with a real ISP and ditch that "LEGO" company...

I setup a *.lnk file to start Netscape Mail. That Link file contains the command line:
C:\blah blah blah\netscape.exe -mail
In DynamIP (RC1) Mail setup, when using the Browse button to point to this link file, it reads the above command line contained in the link file directly into the field once the browse window closes. (It's not supposed to do this, is it?) But it doesn't pull in the command line parameter (i.e, -mail ). If I ignore the Browse button and manually type in the path to the *.lnk file it stays.
C:\blah blah blah\NSMail.lnk
Works fine now. Is the Browse thing a bug or a feature? ;-)
