AtomTime95 is a small app that performs a single task, but it does that one job
extremely well. The client connects to the Atomic Clock time server located in
Boulder, CO and retrieves the current atomic clock time information. It then
gives you a comparison of your desktop's clock and any difference between the
two. You then have the option of setting your desktop's clock to the correct
atomic time given by AtomTime95. While the Atomic Clock time server is the most
reliable time server currently available, you also have the option of using
other time servers with AtomTime95. The client also makes it possible to access
the time server through a proxy host if your 'net connection uses one.
The best setup of AtomTime95 requires a little extra effort, but it's well worth
it. To have the client automatically update your computer's clock each time you
turn it on, all you need to do is create a shortcut to AtomTime95 with the
keyword autoUpdate on the shortcut command line and then add the shortcut
to your StartUp folder. This way AtomTime95 updates the clock each time you
start your computer and then promptly exits thereafter. Alternatively, you can
use the Windows Plus package's System Agent to schedule runs for AtomTime95.
While versions 1.4b and earlier of AtomTime95 are freeware releases, these
versions are no longer supported by the author. If you are in need of support
for the client, you'll need to upgrade to version 1.5 (or later), which can be
purchased over the 'net for a meager sum of $5. All in all, AtomTime95 is an
excellent app to have in your arsenal if the correct time is of any consequence
to you.
Pros: Efficient synchronization of your computer's time clock with the
Atomic Clock time, freeware
Cons: Lacks the more advanced features of a client like SocketWatch,
freeware release is unsupported
