WS Chat -- WS Chat allows real-time bi-directional chatting (text-based) over the internet using physical or SLIP/PPP connections. WS Chat also makes use of event driven programming -- it uses almost no processor time when not in use. WS Chat includes an automated answering machine and address-book. The newer versions now offer on-line help as well. This is a beggerware release -- meaning the author would appreciate donations for his work, but it's not required. Also, future versions of WS Chat will not be free. Positives: Two-way text-based interaction, event driven programming, answering machine Negatives: Only text-based communication, few options Internet Global Phone Project -- IGP uses voice compression technology to allow two-way voice communication over the internet. It differs from Internet Phone by first having to record and compress a message before sending it. The resulting communication will obviously be slower than Internet Phone. Also, there are no hotlists to help users find other users to talk to. IGP will work on a 386, but the sound quality will not be as high as on other machines. The help file would not load when I tried to access it; also, there are very few instructions and options to help novice users get started. Positives: Two-way voice communication over the internet Negatives: Message must be saved and compressed first, few options and on-line Reviewer: Forrest Stroud
