WinZip Self-Extractor -- WinZip Self-Extractor (WinZip SE) is an extremely helpful app for creating compressed archives...without the need for PKZip and PKUNZip. WinZip SE allows you to take a group of files and compress them into a single self-extracting compressed file, which means that the receiver of this archive can automatically uncompress the file without needing any software on their side. The newest release allows for Windows 3.x (with DOS/short filenames) or Windows 95 (with long filenames) compressed files. In addition, the user can configure a setup/installer program to run automatically from the archive in order to help novice users through the process. The newest version also allows for the default language of the self-extracter to be in English or German. At $49, WinZip SE might not be a necessity for everyone, but it will be a solid addition for anyone whose distribution needs demand the ease and power of self-extraction. Pros: Excellent and easy creation of self-extracting archives Cons: $49 price tag is be a bit high for some users, compression levels slightly lower than PKZip New: Support for Windows 95, German language can now be used as the default language Version Reviewed: 1.1 Beta 3 Date of Review: 1/21/96 Reviewer: Forrest Stroud

I have WinZip95 and have really learned to appreciate it. One of the things that I've read a lot about concerning purchasing computer programs is that some of them have lousy customer support... I have experienced the same problem getting customer support... but WinZip is a cut above all the rest when it comes to getting customer support. I've never asked for help and not gotten the help in usually 24 hours or so, the gentleman that works with customer support is very polite, very thorough and doesn't talk down to someone that's not as computer literate as some people are. Please understand that I don't work for WinZip (Nikomat) in any way; but I very much support their software and their company. Stanley
