Between the two World Wars, painting lost some of the raw energy of modernism it began the century with, and became dominated by two rather philosophical movements: Dada and Surrealism. These arose partly as a reaction to the senseless atrocities of World War I, and partly because artists were becoming introspective, cencerned with their subconscious dreams. Salvador Dali once said, "Surrealism is destructive, but it destroys only what it considers to be shackles limiting our vision."
