Hi all
Marcia dear. Can I talk to you sometime since Julie is nowhere to be seen (offline for a few days while she straightens her life out and lets her ankle get over the pain of the operation). I know I got exams but I need a stabilising influence that was usually provided by you and Julie.

Yikes! I am in the middle of the US with only my host's computer for company at the present. My son is repairing my laptop and I am sorry I did not go for a new one instead of all of this wasted time. I cannot talk to anyone except for AOL IM which I currently use until I get my laptop. Here I am at
BluegrassHula@aol.com or screen name of BluegrassHula. Sorry Maggie, between the crashes and download problems most of my email got deleted. I can only heo I get it back when I get back on
aloha.net via my host's server.
Yahoo will be the first thing installed !!!

Laptop is functional and working just fine. I caught up with the posts in Geo and am ready for some serious IM. Rob, I tried to get you to respond yesterday and even emailed you about it. Am I invisible to you, too? I have pared my contact list down to a few special people and Rob and Julie and JohnT are definitely there as is Brenda.

Hi all
You are invisible to me, though I have known you long enough that I thought you were in hiding so as to avoid troublesome types. My list has you, Julie, and Brenda, but I have a wide spread of friends from a Ph.D student who starts his doctorate at Canterbury in a few weeks time, to the volcanologically inclined (aka you, Julie, Peter Rinkleff, Petra (ringenaldus), hardin_r, Furies20, Hannah (szerelem02 - Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology)). Yahoo is mangling offline messages, so that I never get them. How you ask? Well, the dumb thing thinks I am online all the time, so I automatically receive the messages, when I am not. AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! It infuriates me.

Rob, I have ahd the same difficulties with Yahoo offline messages. I don't ever seem to get them anymore and it was my best way of keeping in contact before!
Yup I am often just lurking though I have pruned my contact list to just a few while I am on Don's modem.
Pulling degree rank on me, are you? Do you REALLY wan to take me on in this category? More than likely not since you will surely lose!
I'll keep myself visible. I talk to Greece and Pakistan on Yahoo. Surely you are available in New Zealand. Btw, if you leave your IM active it will not store offline messages because you are not Offline! Julie and I were puzling about why I could not get you until yesterday just in time for Don to use the modem connection. Arrrrrrrrrrgggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi all
I hate Yahoo! and Yahoo! hates me. We are even. And the other thing is Kentucky or where ever these messages are coming from is like 18 hours behind me so by the time I come on after University at say
3.PM my time, you are in bed or headed that way, and might I hope with Prince Charming. So there you go. 10AM here is at least
4.PM there possibly
5.PM so by the time I come online at
3.PM my time it is
10.PM in your patch. The cool thing about Hawaii was you were essentially 2 hours ahead of me except that Monday here was Sunday there. Sorry Marcia, but I cannot change the time zones. So this may become a regular pattern I am afraid.

Hey! I saw a news item on the BBC World News on the PBS channel here. The Kiwis are ready to race for the America's Cup again! One stupid commentator asked rhetorically if anyone in New Zealand appreciated having won the cup. YES!!! Just look at the Jade copy they made to keep there!

Hi all
Fantastic weekend at Wainui, with very cool people. We were there to present research to judges, tutors and peers that was the culmination of a 2 month effort. Did well with every group getting a B+ or better for the poster, and B or better for the oral presentation.
Second thing, yes the Louis Vuitton Challenger series to decide who will race against New Zealand is going ahead. Still in it's early stages, but I am sort of hoping Prada (Italy)will win, since the Italians are gentlemen. They challenged us for it in the 2000 races and were immensely popular with the locals.
Third thing. I have finished my masterpiece, the great narrative of the AD 186 Taupo eruption. To see it shortly watch "Robs Geo World" topic on Geo.

You just haven't had it fixed right. Hominy is just a type of corn. It's Grits that causes people problems. And Grits are just dried, ground, and bleached Hominy corn. In SC, Shrimp and Grits is a staple of the Low Country cuisine.
BTW, when I mentioned the folk over 25 and over 200 lbs, I meant the women! The men are variable, but mostly normal sized. So, you'd have good hunting, but the women to choose from here makes me blanche. If you've heard about NC women being pretty, they are when young, but they all leave as soon as they are able for greener pastures. The kind green with Benjamins!

Grits is good! My first encounter with Hominy was at KFC. It was being served like sweet corn so I took a huge spoonful. I though the whole kernels looked big. They were - and tasting strongly of alum or lye or some chemical. NO ONE else was eating it. I have not seen it served that way since!
If they make it, I won't eat!

Great Truths with thanks to Wolfie
ONE. Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.
TWO. Marry a man/woman you love to talk to. As you get older, their
conversational skills will be as important as any other.
THREE. Don't believe all you hear, spend all you have or sleep all you
want.
FOUR. When you say, "I love you," mean it.
FIVE. When you say, "I'm sorry," look the person in the eye.
SIX. Be engaged at least six months before you get married.
SEVEN. Believe in love at first sight.
EIGHT. Never laugh at anyone's dreams. People who don't have dreams don't
have much.
NINE. Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it's the only
way to live life completely.
TEN. In disagreements, fight fairly. No name calling.
ELEVEN. Don't judge people by their relatives
TWELVE. Talk slowly but think quickly.
THIRTEEN. When someone asks you a question you don't want to answer, smile
and ask, "Why do you want to know?"
FOURTEEN. Remember that great love and great achievements involve great
risk.
FIFTEEN. Say "bless you" when you hear someone sneeze.
SIXTEEN. When you lose, don't lose the lesson
SEVENTEEN. Remember the three R's: Respect for self; Respect for others;
and Responsibility for all your actions.
EIGHTEEN. Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.
NINETEEN. When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to
correct it.
TWENTY. Smile when picking up the phone. The caller will hear it in your
voice.
TWENTY-ONE. Spend some time alone.

"I'm in California temporarily. Off to Kentucky at the end of the week to look for more Appalachian lava!"
I was unaware that the Appalacchians had any volcanics - for some reason I have thought that there are no volcanoes in the US that are east of Yellowstone (most eastern of the recognised volcanoes). I assume there are some significant fault systems in the eastern United States because the Appalacchians look like multiple ranges on a map.

That is the whole point of the paper I am writing on this most curious subject. I found two good-sized pieces of a'a, one of which was attached to limestone and fossil reef. Around the Appalachians from West Virginia south, there are numerous sulfur springs. Some of them became famous health resorts, such as White Sulfur Springs, W Va. When you have a'a and sulfur deposits, can there be anything other than volcanoes as their sources? Makes for a very interesting study!
~MarciaH

The Appalachains appear as multiple ranges because they were once at the leading edge of a continental plate about 250 million years ago. That is far before Pangea was formed. More when my paper is complete.

If I had to name a group of women who I have quiet admiration for, it would have to be the Dixie Chicks. Aside from the physically obvious reasons, it takes guts to stand up and say what you think about the US President in these times where it is apparently not okay to question DUHBYA.
What little I have heard of their music was also very good, and they use instruments that most modern groups would not think of.
