Woo WoO! I'm not lost anymore... I found the maps!

You might want to check the last few comments in the Intro topic where we first had the map discussion. While you were gone we posted a few things before Wolf got the brilliant idea that we needed a map collection, too.

My favorite map these days is the plastic laminated map of Austin, no more torn up paper maps! I wish more maps came out this way, that seems to be the trend.

They have loads of them here like that, but they are so stiff...Actually, I think they are place mats... Is your Austin laminate flexible to roll up, or how do you store it in your vehicle?

the laminated maps i've seen are prefolded. but you can get them in all sizes folded or not.

Oh? I got a laminated map of Mali when I was there ..but that is placemat size and stiff. brought a lot of maps home with me .. they are SO difficult to get there ..like a lot of other things ....Made a photocopy of the local school area for some of the teachers we were working with .. they were thrilled. there is no electricity at the school so they cant make copies of anything themselves.

yeah, look in your local bookstore--they should have a good selection.

There are several good sources of maps on the net. I am still tracking down a map of New Zealand, but I think I will not be satisfied till I have their equivalent of the USGS quadrangle maps or the UK's Ornance Survey. Rob I do know they are working on it. I wonder if a good map until they get the one I want finished?!

I think the ideal thing for maps would be to have a section where you had those pull out displays like they have in stores. Maps take up so much space on walls, there's got to be a better way to display a lot of maps. Once, I had the entire 20' by 12' section of wall in topographic maps, I had them all mounted and juxtaposed them on the wall. They ended up being stolen when I put them in storage a few years back so I'll have to try this all over again.

they must've looked great all mounted and stuff. we have the world and the US tacked up in my son's room. don't think those will get stolen if i put them in storage!! but you almost need a rack, like terry said the bookstores have, and just pull out the one you need.

The best thing about http://www.mapquest.com is the satellite option of a real photo of the place you want to check. Unhappily, they do not yet have The Big Island online yet. I always thought having those wall-mounted swing out maps like some libraries have would be totally cool. Since I have been visitng the mainland, I have learned to love using Delorme maps. Archaeologist approved!
