hello! i'm your self-confessed baby-buster conference host, melissa
marie. being that i'm editor (dictator)-in-chief of a literary magazine
that caters to the gen-x crowd, i thought we youngsters should have out
own
digs on the spring. feel free to add topics galore!
- - - - -
1:2) Melina C. Larson (melina) 27-MAY-94 14:03
Now, in the original conception, genx meant people born in the 1960's.
But I was born 1/11/70, and I feel I'm qualified.
What's your magazine?

1:3) Holly Iles (holly) 28-MAY-94 16:04
It's io isn't it? is that something to do with the illuminati? has
anyone been to illuminati on-line? does anyone here play illuminati?
- - - - -
1:4) Melina C. Larson (melina) 31-MAY-94 11:08
Holly! Stop it! I _do_ play Illuminati. (!)
- - - - -
1:5) Holly Iles (holly) 31-MAY-94 12:33
oh god, stop it? me? I'm not doing anything! You're the one who's doing
it. It's not my fault you're a copycat! nyah nyah... heh heh...
you don't *really* play illuminati do you? Alex and I rarely get a chance
to play because we don't know anyone down here who plays.
- - - - -
1:6) Holly Iles (holly) 31-MAY-94 12:34
Melina, will you marry me? hee hee hee... We're perfect for each other.
Of course, there is that thing about sharing...we would always be
fighting
over who's turn it is to play with all the toys!
- - - - -
1:7) Melina C. Larson (melina) 31-MAY-94 15:10
Well, we'd just have to share and share alike.
Play nicely together...
Yeah, me and Ethan have a copy of the game and play it frequently
with our pals. The fun part is the way the conspiracies are so
frequently plausible. Oh, and making up your own groups.
- - - - -
1:8) Holly Iles (holly) 31-MAY-94 15:26
Confession:
I've only played once but I want to play some more more more!
- - - - -
1:9) Stephanie Brail (spice) 22-JUL-94 18:31
Hi, I've played Illuminati once but I mean to play it more....
Anyway, I hate introducing myself...sufficed to say that I'm a
20-something and I fit several (not all) demographic patterns for people
in my age group. I live in LA (by accident) and I work at home as a
writer. (Or, I play at home and attempt to get paid for it.)
That's all for now....
- - - - -
1:10) melissa marie (suprnaut) 27-JUL-94 18:20
welcome to the Spring, stephanie! scout around the genx conference and
post away to your heart's content!
- - - - -
1:11) sez me (kate) 03-AUG-94 17:53
I am _not_ a genx, that's a nice new word, I come to you from the tail
end
of the boom. I am a SPY.
- - - - -
1:12) RoboHO (holly) 04-AUG-94 20:51
spy shmy you are DYING to KNOW what we are saying! i think that as an
open loving community we can welcome a few boomers openly. We've put up
with terry haven't we (just a playful jab)? he's an admitted boomer
himself.
- - - - -
1:13) onward (terry) 04-AUG-94 22:28
I cop.
- - - - -
1:14) Wes Simonds (ginsu) 05-AUG-94 1:20
... and not merely a boomer, but a policeman.
- - - - -
1:15) I haven't decided (melina) 05-AUG-94 8:03
Bah-doom-pah.
- - - - -
1:16) RoboHO (holly) 05-AUG-94 12:10
no, someone else is the policeman. oh, ha ha, I get it. bleh.
- - - - -
1:17) I haven't decided (melina) 05-AUG-94 12:13
yeah, it was pretty wretched.
- - - - -
1:18) sez me (kate) 05-AUG-94 17:43
spy shmy you are DYING to KNOW what we are saying!
Naah, I just think y'all are so, you know, _adorable_. Cute!

1:20) Howard Fredrics (fredrics) 05-AUG-94 23:54
i'm a tail end boomer too. wanna make something of it?
- - - - -
1:21) I haven't decided (melina) 06-AUG-94 8:59
We should arrange some kind of battle. Tug of War maybe?
boomers vs. xers. Let's settle this question once and for all!
- - - - -
1:22) RoboHO (holly) 06-AUG-94 13:25
Nah, we don't wanna disrespect our elders by making them wallow weakly in
the mud.
muhaha :-P :-b,
- - - - -
1:23) Howard Fredrics (fredrics) 06-AUG-94 18:34
Wait a minute! I used to love mud wrestling. Don't knock it till you've
tried it.
- - - - -
1:24) RoboHO (holly) 07-AUG-94 0:30
Who said I hadn't tried it?
- - - - -
1:25) Howard Fredrics (fredrics) 07-AUG-94 20:13
Alriiight! I'm glad you have. You've gone up a notch in my already high
appreciation for ya, holly.
- - - - -
1:26) RoboHO (holly) 08-AUG-94 19:39
You should know well enough by now that I like messy. Anything messy is
good, as long as it's not sticky. I hate sticky.
- - - - -
1:27) RoboHO (holly) 08-AUG-94 19:39
Although, slimey is good as long as it doesn't go sticky.
- - - - -
1:28) Howard Fredrics (fredrics) 08-AUG-94 21:40
Hmmm! Whatever could you mean?
- - - - -
1:29) RoboHO (holly) 09-AUG-94 11:19
sticky, you know, like dried fruit juice or anything with water and sugar
dried up or drying .
- - - - -
1:30) sez me (kate) 09-AUG-94 17:07
I take it back, you're none of you a bit cute.
Actually I was just seeing if my time-honored way of annoying my five
younger brothers and sisters--all born in the 60s--still worked. Hey, it
does!
- - - - -
1:31) Howard Fredrics (fredrics) 09-AUG-94 17:27
Ah, yes, holly. That's part of why I drink diet drinks. Keeps things
less sticky on the inside and out.
- - - - -
1:32) melissa marie (suprnaut) 29-AUG-94 17:20
howard -- 'bout time you showed yer face 'round here! (sorry guys, just
got back from the middle east a couple of weeks ago and have been
detoxing...)

1:33) Louis E. Kahn (brassman) 30-AUG-94 19:37

Kate writes:
K?> I take it back, you're none of you a bit cute.
Ha! I'm extremely cute. Ask any *other* baboon and they'll tell you
the same.
- - - - -
1:39) Boron Bitch (holly) 26-SEP-94 9:49
Ah, so now we know your butt looks like a target. *snicker* *snicker*
- - - - -
1:40) Boron Bitch (holly) 26-SEP-94 9:50
oh, sorry, you're a boy aren't you? then I guess it's your face that
looks like a target.
- - - - -
1:41) Boron Bitch (holly) 26-SEP-94 9:50
even better, you're an androgynous baboon and both your butt and your
face look like a target! Muhahaha
- - - - -
1:42) Wes Simonds (ginsu) 26-SEP-94 11:29
Since the original POINT of my post was self-critical, I refuse to take
umbrage at your silly remarks and instead will only point out that
yourname
is an anagam of "Sly, Ill Hoe" (say it out loud for best results --
otherwise you're liable to think it refers to garden implements).
- - - - -
1:43) Boron Bitch (holly) 26-SEP-94 15:53
oh don't be a poopy, I'm sure you don't look as much like a baboon as a
target. And believe me, it's nice to have something attractive to aim at
when venting. Ask any woman you know. hee hee
- - - - -
1:44) melissa marie (suprnaut) 28-SEP-94 0:15
wow, this diatribe seems to be working its way from conference to
conference. yeesh, guys ... what's this with the running baboon
references? did i miss something mega-important?
- - - - -
1:45) Wes Simonds (ginsu) 28-SEP-94 8:43
No; it began here with me lying about my looks, as a random post designed
to test out a new Mac based quoter/editor combo I had put together to let
me bypass all UNIX editors, and sprouted wings (or horns).
The fact of the matter is that I resemble, if anything, a cutish lemur.
- - - - -
1:46) Boron Bitch (holly) 28-SEP-94 8:46
Aaaaahhhhhhh, isn't that cute. They have a lemur at Good Day Ranch. We
take Tyler there fairly often. It's the cutest little thing. It sticks
it's little paw through the cage palm up asking form something,
anything. They're cute little critters.
- - - - -
1:47) linear salmon (melina) 28-SEP-94 11:00
I wrote a paper about lemurs once.
- - - - -
1:48) Wes Simonds (ginsu) 28-SEP-94 13:26
Gee, I feel flattered! Looks like I picked the right species at last.
- - - - -
1:49) linear salmon (melina) 28-SEP-94 15:36
I'd just like to say at this time that there is no longer any discernable
difference in content between genx and culture and I can no longer
tell which one I have just gotten done reading and so I keep getting
confused. Thank you for your time.
- - - - -
1:50) Boron Bitch (holly) 29-SEP-94 17:12
oh, fine, is this a hint or should I be reprimanding suprnaut for using
the genx conferences as a pseudo-culture conference? or what? sheeeee's
the one who's been creating topics that belong in culture but I'm too
nice to say anything about it but since you're gonna attack me I guess I
gotta pass the proverbial buck on this one! hee hee ;)
- - - - -
1:51) melissa marie (suprnaut) 29-SEP-94 17:45
eeep! caught at last ... yeah, i know some of the topics do kinda refer
to culture in general ... but i'm trying to get the more
"younger"-oriented topics here, and keeping the more general tops. in the
"culture" conf.
- - - - -
1:52) linear salmon (melina) 29-SEP-94 20:40
Attack? Attack?!?
Lady, you ain't seen an attack.
That's no attack.
That's just a statement. And if you wanna know the truth it's the items
in culture that read like genx to me.
- - - - -
1:53) melissa marie (suprnaut) 29-SEP-94 21:00
hey - somebody's gotta keep culture going! ;)
- - - - -
1:54) The Viking Cowboy (terry) 29-SEP-94 22:49
Hey, culture and genx are topping the charts.
- - - - -
1:55) Boron Bitch (holly) 30-SEP-94 0:31
meh-weena hurt-ed my fee-wings.
*sniffle*
- - - - -
1:56) Wes Simonds (ginsu) 30-SEP-94 1:05
TW> Hey, culture and genx are topping the charts.
Does this mean there are stats available for the public viewing? If
so, I wouldn't mind taking a look, especially if they have use by
individuals as well as by groups. As a net admin I can get on quite
frequently during the day without screwing around on the job and do
(don't ask me what Holly's and Melina's excuses are).
- - - - -
1:57) linear salmon (melina) 30-SEP-94 13:35
I'm screwing around on the job.
You heard it here first, ladies and gentlemen!
- - - - -
1:58) Wes Simonds (ginsu) 30-SEP-94 14:35
You be funny.
- - - - -
1:59) Buddy Brannan (davros) 30-OCT-94 10:55
Humm...Hello?...Melissa told me to get my ass over here a while back, so
here I are... Uhmm... I'm Buddy (Hi there). The rest ain't so important
(is it?)

Hi folks. Echoid out of water here.
- - - - -
1:62) Howard Fredrics (fredrics) 15-DEC-94 11:09
Hi, gtobias. Welcom to the spring. Come on and join us in politics and
music conferences. Culture's been pretty happenin' too.
:)

1:63) Six Inches Short (terry) 15-DEC-94 11:37
Shouldn't be too out of water; I'm sure you recognize the interface.

1:64) melissa marie (suprnaut) 15-DEC-94 16:51
welcome to all newcomers here in genx!
- - - - -
1:65) Rich turiel (aimee) 23-DEC-94 10:46
Hi all i'm new here too. Rich is my name. I was
reading through all this and i was wondering what
baboons and their butts have to do with genx (can our
age group have a different name now) Also why can't
I get into sex Conference??? Now that's important!!.
- - - - -
1:66) Paul (terry) 23-DEC-94 11:05
Contact holly about getting into sex.

1:67) blah (ophelia) 23-DEC-94 13:44
Greetings to everyone in Texas! This is Ophelia, waaaaayyyy up North in
Canada...I'm new on the Spring...I heard about the Spring on the Melrose
newsgroup...I'd love to get in on some of these wicked discussions...you
know, to offer the "Canadian perspective"...yah, right...if anybody
writes
to me, I'll get back to them early January (I'm writing to you from work,
and we have Christmas holidays next week...bad employee! oh well!)...
put up your hand if you have to listen to cheesey music at work! I'm
joining an American group in order to dispell any myths you '
may have heard about us!!! ciao!ophelia from the north
- - - - -
1:68) Paul (terry) 23-DEC-94 15:21
Wellcome to our little backwater community Ophelia. Kick your shoes off
and jump into the Melrose discussion. Melissa Marie (suprnaut) will be
thrilled I'm sure, the Melrose folks hang out over in genx.
Any questions? We've got a very friendly, helpful bunch here so there are
a lot of folks who will help answer them. How far North in Canada are
you?
- - - - -
1:69) Comrade Howard (fredrics) 23-DEC-94 16:38
Hearty welcomes to Rich and Ophelia! Hope to see ya around lots!

1:70) Someone Stop Me from Sleeping! (cbwood) 25-DEC-94 16:17
I did a long version of one of these in the telecom conference....(was it
telecom or was it sci_fi or was it tv? AGH! I'm confused...) At any rate.
I'm a relatively sane (not) future Electrical Engineer (yay!) from
Virginia Tech. I hail from Washington, DC (hey! It's a great town) and I
plan on moving to Blacksburg, Va (where I am now, at school) god willing.
I've been net surfing for 3 years, back before there was gopher or the
WWW.
I was born in '71 (*I* think that's close enough) and I've always felt
closer to the GenX'rs than any other 'age group' I've come in contact
with.
Dislike grundge (although I can deal with it) love Prince (or is it 0-+>
now?) certain rap groups (PE in full effect!) and can tolerate a certain
degree of country (how's that for musical spectrum?!?).
How's that for a summary?!?
PS {You guys playing Illuminati around here?!? COOL! There's a new
Magic-like card game version floating around. I'm probably going to buy
it
sooner or later.
Merry Christmas!
- - - - -
1:71) Paul (terry) 25-DEC-94 17:26
Hardly anyone has talked about country in the music conference and our
host there, Howard, doesn't like it, so we could use some diversity.
Welcome the Spring. What do you think of genx now that you've browsed it
a bit?
- - - - -
1:72) Someone Stop Me from Sleeping! (cbwood) 26-DEC-94 0:35
Due to the business of the holiday season, I only have seen Item 1
(here).
I'm going to read a little more, now. I'm sure I'll like it.
- - - - -
1:73) melissa marie (suprnaut) 26-DEC-94 13:51
welcome all newcomers to my happy little virtual abode!
feel free to enter new topic items at will!
- - - - -
1:74) Comrade Howard (fredrics) 27-DEC-94 18:51
Hey, cbwood! Welcome!
BTW, terry, just cause I don't like country doesn't mean people should
hesitate to post about it. Besides, I've been known to write a few
country
songs in my time. My fav was "How can I believe in you, knowin' you'll be
leavin' me."
- - - - -
1:75) Mr. Ditka's ignorant slut (bcj) 27-DEC-94 18:55
Good one, Howard, that's up there with "Jesus and Momma Always Loved Me"
in the country song title hall of fame!
- - - - -
1:76) Someone Stop Me from Sleeping! (cbwood) 28-DEC-94 1:05
Thanks Howard. Call me Cliff. Kinda hard to pronounce 'cbwood'.
Say it three times fast and you'll see what I mean. ;)
I can TOLERATE country. I think the closest thing to country that I like
(and no flames, please) is *Big Head Todd and the Monsters*
- - - - -
1:77) melissa marie (suprnaut) 28-DEC-94 1:12
closest thing to county i can stomach is chris isaac -- if that counts as
country.
- - - - -
1:78) Someone Stop Me from Sleeping! (cbwood) 28-DEC-94 1:26
Chris Isaac?
Never heard of him...
- - - - -
1:79) melissa marie (suprnaut) 28-DEC-94 11:34
he's the guy that did "don't let me dream about you."
- - - - -
1:80) I ate too much for dinner tonight... (cbwood) 28-DEC-94 18:45
Nope. Never heard of him.......(must not be musically cultured enough,
yet..)
- - - - -
1:81) Gravity Girl (holly) 29-DEC-94 0:15
Why haven't I seen these ppl in culture yet?
- - - - -
1:82) melissa marie (suprnaut) 29-DEC-94 0:24
let's round 'em up nd head 'em on out, holly!
- - - - -
1:83) Mr. Ditka's ignorant slut (bcj) 29-DEC-94 15:44
chris isaac does not count as country.
- - - - -
1:84) sez me (kate) 29-DEC-94 18:23
indeed no. perish the thought!

1:85) Nikolai Stiehl (nike) 16-JAN-95 13:14
Hi everybody
born `72 I don't know if that qualifies.
Saw this film "reality bites" so If being like these characters qualifies
I'm outta here! Tell me! Please. ;-)
Bye for now, from Germany.
- - - - -
1:86) Josh Karpf (jkarpf) 17-JAN-95 10:43
And hi for now, from NYC... I've taken a common 20something career,
publishing, the soft side of the corporate world. I've been at it for
five years, though, straight out of college, and that's too long. I
don't listen to music much, but I angst as well as the next man. Glad to
be here.
- - - - -
1:87) melissa marie (suprnaut) 17-JAN-95 18:10
welcome, everyone!
no, this topic is not a mis-en-scene of "reality bites" (however, we do
tend to bitch about this movie a lot in this conference!) part of the
beauty of the genx conference is that we get to discuss all the various
and sundry misconceptions and sterotypes affixed to our generation. go
to it, kids!
- - - - -
1:88) Nikolai Stiehl (nike) 18-JAN-95 4:30
With all this ok-stuff at the beginning
do you know how this developed?
The term ok stems from the French at New Orleans every time a ship came
into the harbor everybody was shouting au quai to the quays or docks
because everybody was glad that a new ship had arrived the meaning of ok
is all is fine..
O?
OK? fine and bye for now
- - - - -
1:89) melissa marie (suprnaut) 19-JAN-95 1:58
tres interesting!
- - - - -
1:90) Nikolai Stiehl (nike) 19-JAN-95 3:01
Nst pas? to keep things french ;-)
- - - - -
1:91) Holli Kerr (jazzmin) 25-JAN-95 15:52
M.
I guess if I were to be born 1-19-70 then I would be a gen-x er, too...
since I was then I suppose I am.
But. My daughter was born 1-19-94, what does that make her?
- - - - -
1:92) Nikolai Stiehl (nike) 26-JAN-95 12:07
Gen-y or Gen-z?
who knows with which terminology theyll try to summ us up.
- - - - -
1:93) melissa marie (suprnaut) 27-JAN-95 12:33
i think the term is "global teen." welcome, holli!
- - - - -
1:94) are you laughing in my class? (jaydbee) 07-FEB-95 16:14
okay...i've ventured forth into the world of genx...my world, so to
speaak..
I'm Jan and I'm from CA (Pasadena, to be exact)...and I just hit 30 a
few months ago. Still genx (cuz I wuz born 10/64)....but I never liked
that term. Seeing how I work w/a bunch of folks that actually remember
the day Kennedy died...and I wasn't even a fetus at the time...I actually
prefer the term "Dead Kennedys".
But that's cuz I'm nuts. :)
cbwood...a friend is slowly but surely turning me on to the world of
the Purple One...let's chat sometime...

1:95) My Name is "Cliff" and I am funky! (cbwood) 07-FEB-95 23:10

on the Spring.
Not on here as much as I used to be.
- - - - -
1:96) melissa marie (suprnaut) 08-FEB-95 17:48
well, getcher butt back in gear then, cliff-thang. bring a few friends,

- - - - -
1:97) My Name is "Cliff" and I am funky! (cbwood) 21-FEB-95 3:30
Marie: Maybe. If I can find the time to Spring and do school work then
definitely.
- - - - -
1:98) melissa marie (suprnaut) 21-FEB-95 20:21
ah, blow off the school work. trust me: a year after you graduate,
you'll remember nothing, except some insignificant detail -- kind of like
i did. i have the various parts a gregorian chant mass memorized in
great detail.
- - - - -
1:99) Rain Woman (jaydbee) 21-FEB-95 20:44
I remember the first thing I learned as an EE freshman: V=IR

hell, I memorized my SSN after writing it on over 30 scholarship appli-
cations....and the reason why I don't remember most of my EE is because
I just don't use it. I'm a software engineer...haven't seen a resistor
since 1987...

Melissa: Sane?!? What's that?
Jan: (Why do I insist on calling you Jay?!) -- I want to be a software
engineer. I'm tired of resistors!

Just thought that someone would like to here the story that I heard about
how OK got into the language. There once was an indian chief in the
just thought that someone would like to hear the story that i heard about
how OK got into the language. There once was an indian chief in the
northeast that had the reputation of being fair and even handed in all of
his dealings. His name, as best that I can remember it was O Kalamachus.
The early english settlers that dealt with him were so impressed with
his judgement in all things that they would bring even their own
disputes to him for settlement. His name and initials became symbols
for fairness in trade. Hence, the generally agreed upon sense that OK
meant
good and not OK meant bad. It's obvious that I'm new to this, so please
bear with me. I'll get the hang of this after a while, and I hope to get
to know you all better soon. ttfn.

1:110) David Miller (dmiller) 05-MAR-95 12:51
Hi,
I was born in '62. Some charts show boomers going on until '64, when the
pill was made available. Other charts show xers starting in '60.
So I guess that demographically I'm a boomer, but attitudinally I'm an
xer.
Where will I be placed in the tug of war mentioned several months ago
(but
about which I just read today being a self-professing practicing newbie
on
the Spring)? Maybe in the mud holding the middle of the rope? Not cool!
Quick! Somebody cheer me up!

Hi. Robin here. Very new to spring and not getting a wink of work done
as I'm spending all of my time on it. That's the advantage and
disadvantage of working on a computer. :) Born 3/1/70. I was conceived
the summer of 69 at woodstock. I believe that qualifies me for genx.
i'm posted a little everywhere(books, writing, singles, etc). good to meet
your acquaintances. robin

Ok. that sounds really awful of me above, no? But I went home one
weekend a few years ago and was leafing through some of my mom's old
albums. I started to put on the White Album. She says to me, please
don't. I really don't like the Beatles anymore. ACK! I was traumatized.
Truly. :) robin

1:123) where the boyce are (boyce) 12-MAY-95 9:37
I didn't think that it sounded awful on your part, just that your parents
seem to me to be sadly revisionist in their view of the past. Too bad
that some born-agains seem to be genuinely revolted by their lives before
christ, when in reality it coudn't have been that bad; it got them where
they are today...

1:124) Robin Sease (bennett) 15-MAY-95 17:49
I think you are very correct. I suppose I view it from a fairly
subjective and selfish level. Namely, "but mom you taught me free love
and
pot were great!!" :) Perhaps because i'm aware of my subjective view,
I'm afraid to criticize. Thanks for the input.
