This is the "allow me to introduce myself" item. Just about every conference has an introductions item. So, you may want to relate your introduction to the theme of this conference. What is your background and what are your interests, specifically, in music. What kinds of topics would you like to see in this conference? What do you like to talk about, musically?
~oplion Sun, Aug 25, 1996 (00:57) #1

I LIKE COUNTRY MUSIC AND LIKE TO 2 STEP. ANYONE LIKE THE SAME?
~Sting Fri, Nov 8, 1996 (12:07) #3
I like mostly "Alternative" music, especially Sting. I played the trumpet for six years and gave it up now that I'm in college.
~terry Fri, Nov 8, 1996 (15:02) #4
Welcome Sting. Do you think we should start a Sting topic here?
~Pseudo Fri, Nov 22, 1996 (03:43) #5
A Sting topic is always welcome, since I listen to it all the time.
~RedRose Tue, Nov 26, 1996 (23:52) #6
Let's see, I am a fan of every type of music. I sing, I dance, I play piano and I would love to see some discussion on performers and types of music...pretty general huh! But yes, I like country too because I am from Colorado (the plains area) and now i n Chicago.
~terry Wed, Nov 27, 1996 (00:03) #7
Great, how about if we fire up a country music topic?
~sarahp Sun, Dec 8, 1996 (20:23) #8
Does anyone who comes here listen to classical? If so, what sorts? P.S. To all those Country fans, did anyone catch Shania Twain on the Vanessa Willians Christmas special?
~terry Sun, Dec 8, 1996 (21:09) #9
I like Palcalbel, Mozart and many of the great classics. Should we open a classical music topic?
~psycho Tue, Dec 10, 1996 (18:52) #10
I listen to many types of music. My favorite is rock music. I also listen to a bit of country, pops, heavy metal, and alternative. I'm thinking about checking out blues music.
~psycho Tue, Dec 10, 1996 (18:53) #11
Ooops, I forgot to mention that I play guitar. Started only about a year ago, though.
~terry Wed, Dec 11, 1996 (06:50) #12
What topics would you like to see us start here Ricky Lee?
~psycho Wed, Dec 11, 1996 (19:25) #13
Perhaps a topic involving the creative side of music would be nice. Or maybe one on rock music.
~terry Wed, Dec 11, 1996 (19:35) #14
OK. Sounds good. Done.
~McBruce Thu, Dec 12, 1996 (20:50) #15
How about good sources for artists/ music not carried by the major distributors? The retail market in this area is fairly limited. It's most frustrating when I catch a review or snatch of something, try to track it down and get blank looks from the clerk behind the counter. Any suggestions?
~joshd Fri, Dec 13, 1996 (08:44) #16
Have you tried the independents, like Waterloo or Inner Sanctum?
~McBruce Fri, Dec 13, 1996 (17:33) #17
No, I sure haven't. Any more info on them? Many moons ago, when I lived in East Lansing, there was a great store there (one of many) called Elderly Music. Any one know if they're still around?
~joshd Sat, Dec 14, 1996 (12:39) #18
Not familiar with Elderly Music, other than the kind my parents listen to. But an Infoseek search turned up http://www.ddg.com/AMW/Stores/retail.index.html, which has Web pages for several Austin record stores, including Waterloo, and info on contacting them by phone and snail-mail. Good luck!
~maddog Wed, Dec 18, 1996 (21:10) #19
I enjoy and play rock music. (60's - 90's) just as long as it's loud. I play guitar, bass and sing in a couple of local bar/cover bands in New Hampshire. We cover everything from Buddy Holly to Stone Temple Pilots. (although I must admit, Buddy would probably spin in his grave if he heard our versions..) Although we play covers we play 'em heavy and hard and we tend to bounce off the walls a bit, but hey.....
~drymartini Sun, Dec 22, 1996 (23:11) #20
and Yes! Classical music topic. And how about a jazz one? Hey, I have a funny which I always remember this time of year. My dear buddy (now dead) Joseph T. Weingold (Jerry Weingold, virtually the father of the movement for services for the mentally retarded) was visiting me. I had asked my then husband to pick me up a recording of The Messiah, the Serchen one. Husband came home with Sir Thomas Beecham and the London Phil. Right band, wrong leader, huh? So I complained, "Oh no! We've got the wrong messiah!" So Jerry Weingold said, with his most Jewish rising inflection, "This is new? We've been telling you this for centuries."
~drymartini Thu, Dec 26, 1996 (21:12) #21
Wondering what your musical experiences have been over the holidays. Did you participate in concerts, catch some great groups, see something outstanding on the tube? Are you getting into any of the bands on the 'net, catching their cuts? If so, what do you think of the sound quality? Are any of you into MIDI? If so, what hardware/software do you use. Are you producing scores? As the old spiritual goes, I wonder as I wander as I wonder as I wander...

~Thela Tue, Mar 25, 1997 (08:06) #30
Hi all, I love music. I play guitar. I am an eclectrical engineer and design some original effects. I've mostly been into heavy alternative of late: Jane's Addiction, Sound Garden, Tool, AIC, etc... But I am really starting to like techno-jungle/bass and drums. I want to do Internet collaberation. I have lot's of cool guitar stuff that I would like to get mixed with someone doing MIDI/Sampling/Looping stuff. I do like Morphine (what little I've heard) and Soul Coughing (saw them at SXSW here in Austin, TX; they were really good). Anyway, that's a start. Laters, G http://www.fc.net/~greystok
~aubrey Tue, Apr 8, 1997 (12:38) #31
Really like music--mostly alternative/whiney folk stuff for now, but really almost anything (except heavy-duty country; sorry monty et al). I love that feeling when you hear a song for the first time and for whatever reason it just blows you away...and I empathize with Mc Bruce and the blank stares from record store clerks--and what's worse, I've usually just heard a bit of a song with no identifying artist or title given...try buying something based on a song fragment and nothing more! KUT used to be s cool for new and unusual music--I taped hours of Broadway showtunes back in the late 80s. Public Radio claims to have a 1-800 number where you can get just about anything, tho I've never tried it (again, when you only have a song fragment...!); I've had a LOT of success at Borders Books and Music, looking things up on their computerized system.
~terry Tue, Apr 8, 1997 (22:56) #32
Have you visited http://www.amazon.com ?
~aubrey Fri, Apr 11, 1997 (14:13) #33
Well, took me a hwile to get around to it (I've been busy filling the other topics with my useless chatter), but I tried and they seem to be just books? Am I wrong? Cosmic uncoscious: this week's Met (our alternative to the Observer=Chronicle) mentions it as well! Maybe I'll try again and just search something, eh! Right now I'm trying to find out it Jimmy LaFave sang Just Walk Away Renee at any point....
~aubrey Fri, Apr 11, 1997 (14:16) #34
No luck. "No such book with that title in our selection"...
~terry Fri, Apr 11, 1997 (20:54) #35
So who did sing Just Walk Away Renee? The original.
~babylonzoo Sat, Apr 19, 1997 (09:50) #36
Hey there, does anyone like Babylon Zoo??
~terry Sat, Apr 19, 1997 (20:01) #37
What are some of their numbers? No response yet on the Walk Away Rennee query.
~tj Tue, May 6, 1997 (17:04) #38
I like just about every type of music, but listen mostly to blues (all years - from Etta, Robert Nighthawk, Brownie McGhee to Buckwheat Zydeco and Koko and rock (mainly from the years 1969 to 1974). I do have a passion for good old gaelic (irish) folk music (hard to find on cd) and jug bands (harder still). But pride myself on owning one of the most extensive blues collections that I have ever seen. I host a memorial day weekend party at my home every year and have a variety of musicians and bands on the Saturday of the weekend. Most only play for 30 to 45 minutes but the jams when everyone is done is great. Over the last years we headlined the "Bastrop Left Bank All Star Jug Band Review", "High Tide", "Chief", "Ray Lafuente" and "Steve & Janice" this year will feature "Burn Unit" a blues and rock band, "Ma Butler" and his singing saw (yes he plays saw), and "Janie & Ray" and acoustic folk duo. I only have a few invitations left but you could email me at teejaycee@hotmail.com and if you are going to be in the Austin area for that weekend and you play an instrument, maybe we can work something out.
~adverb Mon, May 19, 1997 (07:08) #39
Since I received an email asking me to post to a conference on this site as 'a test', I thought I'd stop in and do just that. I like the pun on 'The Well', terry... I picked the music conference since I run a small independent jazz label down here in Auckland, New Zealand... but it seems that country and rock seem to be the order of the day... so I won't bore anyone with that. Anyway... consider this a test. Connection seems fine, even though I'm operating from the great South Pacific bandwidth bottleneck... Congratulations on a great site.
~terry Mon, May 19, 1997 (12:57) #40
Thanks, the tests from all corners of the planet are doing well. Sunday was a "test" day for our T-1 connection and I asked a lot of folks to log in and let me know how we were doing performance and speedwise. Tell us more about the New Zealand music scene!
~Jomik Fri, May 23, 1997 (07:43) #41
Hi all, I'm quite new to The Spring and I'm taking lessons of improvisation on piano. The reason I came here is the email from Terry asking me to post something, but I think I'll come back..
~jzitt Thu, Jun 19, 1997 (14:29) #42
Hi, all. I'm finally getting around to getting on here (it may be a needed segue from Electric Minds). I have an experimental vocal ensemble here in Austin, Empty Words, and have done the music (and scripts and design and...) for various theatre and video projects over the years. On the Net, I run a mailing list about John Cage.
~terry Thu, Jun 19, 1997 (18:11) #43
Joe, you may want to stick around because there are several major music happenings planned for the Spring. We just registered austinmusicint.com and plan to move their website here and you should see a migration here soon of writers, musicians and artists spurred by our association with Capitol City Arts and other local groups.
~drummerboy Sun, Oct 19, 1997 (18:33) #44
Hello all ! I am a student at the University of Michigan looking for some hot conversation about the wild world of music.
~terry Mon, Oct 20, 1997 (08:40) #45
Welcome Jonathon, what music topics interest you?
~drummerboy Thu, Oct 23, 1997 (21:17) #46
I am interested in all types of music. Pop, classical, jazz, latin, fusion, funk, rap, reggae, you name it. As far as specific topics, I'm game for any kind of conversation (or argument as the case may be). Fire away !!!
~terry Fri, Oct 24, 1997 (06:29) #47
What's an example of "fusion" music?
~drummerboy Mon, Oct 27, 1997 (09:38) #48
Fusion is one of those grey areas, but the late Tony Williams' LIFETIME qualifies as one of the great fusion bands of the 70's. Essentially, jazz guys were branching out into rock and rock guys were experiencing jazz. "Fusion" is the combination of both these elements into one cohesive style.
~terry Mon, Oct 27, 1997 (10:39) #49
If you had to select one fusion album for a desert island, which would it be?
~stacey Tue, Nov 4, 1997 (12:04) #50
On a desert island, what would you have to play it on?
~terry Tue, Nov 4, 1997 (13:19) #51
OK there happens to be a tuner with a casette deck and a solar powered generator that was left over from a military base on hand, Ms. technical.
~stacey Wed, Nov 5, 1997 (10:48) #52
*smile* Well, how about some Toni Childs, Cowboy Junkies, Sisters of Mercy, The Eagles, Tchicovsky (sp?) and an "alternative" sampler (just random tunage!) Oh! Can't forget the reggae!!
~Afor Fri, Dec 12, 1997 (23:28) #53
O.K., I can't play any musical instruments, although I still try once in a while to play the recorder or the keyboard. I am Jamaican. I like reggae music, but not exclusively; I'm also a rock and R&B fan. I don't understand the hang-up everybody has about '70s music, or the disco v. rock thing; I am a fan of The Chi-Lites, Pink Floyd and KC and The Sunshine Band! Of course, Bob Marley's international career was mostly during the Seventies... BTW, are there any Peter Tosh fans out there?
~stacey Mon, Dec 15, 1997 (18:33) #54
KC and the Sunshine band are playing in Tucson next weekend! (Guess where I spent my weekend?!?!)
~terry Mon, Dec 15, 1997 (23:12) #55
Boulder?
~pmnh Mon, Dec 15, 1997 (23:14) #56
somehow, i sense you were in phoenix...
~Afor Mon, Dec 15, 1997 (23:47) #57
Nah, she was California Dreamin'! (Spilling the beans here, she mentioned it in the Motorcycle conference!)
~KitchenManager Wed, Dec 17, 1997 (01:31) #58
Sorry, Sam, she went to Cali before this last trip...Austin's next. Woo Woo! Actually, I think it's San Antonio, then Austin, but close enough.
~stacey Wed, Dec 17, 1997 (18:44) #59
Sorry to confuse you Sam. San Diego was 12/1 - 12/5, Phoenix, Tucson and Sedona were last week and San Antonio/Austin is 12/22 - 1/3. Gotta love the schedule!
~KitchenManager Thu, Dec 18, 1997 (01:15) #60
Or at least fit it into the schedule...
~stacey Thu, Dec 18, 1997 (09:56) #61
There will certainly be time found to fit you into the schedule... how much time are you good for?
~KitchenManager Thu, Dec 18, 1997 (10:04) #62
Depends on when you work me in...
~stacey Thu, Dec 18, 1997 (10:18) #63
GOOD MORNING!!! or where I work on you?
~KitchenManager Thu, Dec 18, 1997 (10:21) #64
True, true, and good mornin' to you!
~terry Wed, Dec 24, 1997 (05:38) #65
Good morning!
~Afor Wed, Dec 24, 1997 (11:06) #66

~KitchenManager Wed, Dec 24, 1997 (11:28) #67
The sun is shining, and I can now say that most of good friends are here, so Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, Happy Kwanza, and just plain old Happy Holidays!
~Afor Wed, Dec 24, 1997 (11:42) #68
bah! humbug!
~KitchenManager Wed, Dec 24, 1997 (13:01) #69
Watch out, Sam, everyone is going to think that I figured out how to post under your name...
~Afor Wed, Dec 24, 1997 (20:59) #70
Nope, this is me, Sam Blob, the one and only, continuing to say that Christmas, etc. is a sham developed by marketing executives the world over.
~Wolf Wed, Dec 24, 1997 (21:51) #71
true, but there are those of us who remember what we're celebrating. Merry Christmas, Sam :)
~Wolf Wed, Dec 24, 1997 (22:03) #72
How does Jamaica celebrate Christmas, Sam?
~Afor Thu, Dec 25, 1997 (17:25) #73
The way we celebrate everything else, with gunfire and crass dance-hall nonmusic
~stacey Mon, Jan 5, 1998 (10:09) #74

~rattlecat Sat, Mar 14, 1998 (05:16) #81
I'm rattlecat. I play drums. I own a record label that re-issues pre-rock R&B records, only the uptempo ones that rock (I have no patience for slow blues that don't rock). Rocking R&B from 1949 to 1953 or so. Rocking sax. Stomping drums. Hammering pianos. Good rocking bands. Best music that ever was. Best music that ever will be.
~terry Sat, Mar 14, 1998 (07:31) #82
Have you heard about SXSW? Welcome rattlecat!
~rattlecat Mon, Mar 16, 1998 (04:35) #83
Never heard of it. South by Southwest?
~boyce2 Mon, Mar 16, 1998 (16:49) #84

Howdy. I used to hang out here about 3 years ago. Lot's happened since then -- moved a few times and got married. Now I live in Providence, RI. Good to be back on the Spring! Let's see ....intros.... I'm a composer of experiemental music and music for media as well as being a professor at Brown University. My favorite type of music is French and Swedish Musique Concrete, but I also like some popular electronica such as Aphex Twin, Portishead, and Tortoise.
~stacey Mon, May 18, 1998 (17:25) #87
welcome back howard!

That's great that you're back Howard, a link with our not so distant early days. We've been through quite a few changes since those pioneering days. I hope you stick around and liven up our music and other topics, Howard!
~MaryBeth Fri, Jun 26, 1998 (22:23) #90

~KitchenManager Wed, Jul 8, 1998 (02:30) #100
That was one of the weird things that happened, Terry. Wolf posted that she was shutting this topic down in the poetry conference, Poems of Desire/etc., and it posted here. maybe it was just excessive gremlins the other night, but everytime it has done something weird like that to me, this place has shut down within seven days...
