Crosby, Stills and Nash (and Young?)
~terry Thu, Jan 15, 1998 (07:09) #1
From David Crosby: I wish we were big enough to do a week at the Fillmore .....couldn't think of a better gig......but that will only happen if there is a response to the record...( keep your fingers crossed).....as for all the rest of the places we would like to be .........we will try to cover as many as we can get bookings at in a couple of months of touring......as for the casinos......I hope I can meet some of you if your coming.....I will come down after and play the dollar slots ....wear a carnation in your buttonhole and carry a copy of "Field and Stream" upside down

that's really sad (david crosby musing that he wished CS&N was "bigger")... and i didn't know that the fillmore (west, i take it, that he was referring to?) still existed... also, the idea of artists of their stature playing casinos (alongside tom jones, and the ghost of joey heatherton) is kinda sad, too... i'm a big CS&N fan (graham nash is my favorite- he was on "politically incorrect" last night, by the way) and have never understood the brutal nature of the criticism directed at them by much of the rock and roll press (meaning Rolling Stone, of course, who pretty much define that press, tell everyone what it's cool to think, etc...)... maybe the thing is, if you love that kind of music, especially from that time, it is visceral to love CS&N, and that sort of thing defies the endless pointless (sometimes) indless posturings of a greil marcus... either way, it's irritating... any CS&N fan that hasn't seen the film "the muse concert: no nukes" really oughta (see it), because there's some truly excellent stuff there... the "our house" sequence is simply beautiful...

Oh baby! The ultimate Sunday morning conference! Lemme grab a cup of coffe and a thick paper! Man I LOVE Crosby Still & Nash!
~terry Thu, Jan 15, 1998 (21:08) #4
I sent a message to Croz with some questions I had. Some of those echo the above questions.
~pmnh Thu, Jan 15, 1998 (22:00) #5
that is really cool, terry... top 5 CS&N tunes: 1) helplessly hoping 2) our house 3) suite: judy blue eyes 4) wasted on the way 5) teach your children (very tough to pick... probably feel different tomorrow...)

~Afor Fri, Jan 16, 1998 (23:30) #9
Saw 'em perform it on T.V.; Atlantic Record's 40'th anniversary some years ago. Doin' O.K., I guess.

More from the Croz: Keerect ........CSN just did a week at the Fillmore ......CPR will be playing at the closet in the Fillmore........playing extemely well however......no complaints .....extemely good music is what I came to the party for in the first place wouldn't you just love it Stevie......I do love him though.....always have .....he is a good guy......and we do not do stereotypical gay jokes .....our gay jokes are very innovative and quite well informed thankyou.......say ....you left me out of the adamant hetero thing .....oh darn ......weep weep.....now everyone will know.....oh goodnes me......
~terry Wed, Jan 28, 1998 (15:18) #11
More from croz: being as how Django is my son .......he will undoubtedly be expelled from Harvard.......his mother will cry.......I will hide a small smile.....life will go on.......I think you won't mind what we did when you see the context.....as for VW......if they would remake the venerable Beatle intead of this four wheeled jelly bean they are coming out with .......well I might not mind......that old car gave good value for it's dollar........if any of you want to see a one of a kind show........Santa Monica Civic......20th and 12st......CSN, Linda Ronstadt, Carol King, the Section, with walk ons by Neil, Jackson, and surprises.

Brief mentions dept: Media mentions of CSNY - a brief, strange mention in Steve Silberman's Wired column today on the Clinton mess: http://www.wired.com/news/news/wiredview/story/9941.html

The croz speaks: Emily and Dean Parks played it with Lee Sklar ......I sang it with harmonics from Kipp Lennon from my favorite vocal band "Venice"......and as usual the mighty Diga is at least partially right...........it is a jewel.....and should have been on the record.....I fucked up.......but Columbus was good too and not at all "sappy"......Diga loves to call at least one thing sappy when he is writing about any album so that paople won't think he's gone soft and lost his edge......actually the word around the poufter circuit is that he hasn't gone soft in years......rehearsals end 2morrow and I am floating on a cloud.......oh .....and that's "Healing hands of autumn"
~terry Mon, May 4, 1998 (23:48) #15
From the croz: OK.......so yes ....they found Ethan.......it's OK ........I love you guys for caring........I kind of knew it would come out this way after I went to his campsite and sat where he sat and reached for him for a while.......life goes on ......other stuff ......I interviewed my friends Emily and Amy (Indigo)yesterday about musician activism for our book/documentary....their interview will be perhaps the best of all..........two more lovely people you will not find ........articulate, informed, fearless, respectful of each other and all people who behave like humans......I love them both ....they are gay and they are comfortable with who they are ......nothing to prove....and in spite of this kind of bullshit from homophobic, ignorant people...they find it in thier hearts to be real friends to me ....a relatively hetero guy ...I say relativley because Digaman called me on it and it is true ....I have made love with a guy.....more than once ....not just in combination with a girl in a multiple but by ourselves........I liked it .....did everything ......liked it.....so there .....doesn't seem like a big deal to me ....I love humans 'cause they are good humans and I don't give a fuck about the plumbing or what they do for fun in bed.....doesn't seem like the important part.........by the way ....the Indigo's immediately announced a free gig after school in that town to which ALL the kids are coming.....one other interesting note is that Hootie of all paople who are from Columbia S.C.spoke out very strongly right away about being outraged that the high school (to which one of them went) would do such a totally stupid and offensive thing......

(david bowie apparently really gets around)

Croz is coming to Austin's Backyard next month! I'll have more details.
~TIM Tue, Nov 17, 1998 (11:23) #19
I listened to CSN when they were Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. I liked the sound, but they weren't prolific enough for me at that time. Now I wish I had more of their music.
~stacey Tue, Nov 17, 1998 (11:28) #20
That's my Sunday, drinking coffee and cleaning house with the windows open and the sunshine streaming in music!
~TIM Tue, Nov 17, 1998 (11:52) #21
Somehow, when I listen to their music, it seems to be a sunny day, even if it"s not. I carried a couple of their tapes with me on the truck, and whenever something was bothering me, I'd put one of the tapes in and, suddenly, everything was mellow again. They are great for rush hour in LA.
~stacey Tue, Nov 17, 1998 (15:17) #22
do you sing aloud to them? (I certainly do)
~autumn Tue, Nov 17, 1998 (16:52) #23
I sing aloud to everything.
~TIM Tue, Nov 17, 1998 (17:38) #24
I do too, and, if ican't remember the lyrics, I just fake it.
~riette Wed, Nov 18, 1998 (03:48) #25
And will we have a sample of this at the party next year?? Imagine! Stacey, Autumn and Tim in a trio!
~TIM Wed, Nov 18, 1998 (05:26) #26
That would be interesting, I sing basement bass.
~autumn Thu, Nov 19, 1998 (22:47) #27
Better rent a karaoke machine!!! I'm a big faker too, and I'll even sing along with songs I don't like. I can't help myself.
~TIM Fri, Nov 20, 1998 (02:38) #28
Well sometimes i've been known to sing along with a dog.
~autumn Sun, Nov 22, 1998 (22:56) #29
I just saw a CD in a store today called "Bark! The Herald Angels Sing"--you guessed it, dogs barking along with 20-some of your favorite Xmas carols.
~TIM Sun, Nov 22, 1998 (23:00) #30
What store? I gotta have this CD.
~autumn Sun, Nov 22, 1998 (23:18) #31
The Book Warehouse at the dreaded outlet center.
~TIM Sun, Nov 22, 1998 (23:22) #32
OOPS!!! What city do you live in?
~autumn Sun, Nov 22, 1998 (23:53) #33
I live in Havre de Grace, Maryland, but the outlet center is in Queenstown (both are dinky so never mind). Are outlets big there??
~TIM Mon, Nov 23, 1998 (00:04) #34
We have a big outlet in San Marcos, but there is no book warehouse there. Let's see, between Baltimore and Annapolis.
~autumn Mon, Nov 23, 1998 (00:07) #35
(*gasp*) East of both, but sort of between the two nonetheless.
~TIM Mon, Nov 23, 1998 (00:09) #36
On the Eastern Shore!!!! that is my favorite part of Maryland!!!!
~autumn Sun, Nov 29, 1998 (21:35) #37
Then you are probably no stranger to St. Michael's/Tilghman's Island. What were you doing in Maryland, Tim? Please don't tell me you love Ocean City.
~TIM Mon, Nov 30, 1998 (01:30) #38
Actually, I prefer the countryside. Autumn, I drove heavy truck Over the road for 6.5 years. I have been on every single mile of interstate, And most miles of us and state highways in the continental US. In the continental US, I have been within 50 miles of every square inch of land. In 6.5 years, I traveled over a million miles. in the US and Canada.
~autumn Tue, Dec 1, 1998 (21:22) #39
And what is your favorite place?
~TIM Tue, Dec 1, 1998 (22:14) #40
Without a doubt, Nogales, AZ. It's like something out of a Western movie, but no tourists.
~riette Wed, Dec 2, 1998 (02:55) #41
Gosh, America must be so big!
~TIM Wed, Dec 2, 1998 (03:11) #42
Yes Riette, It's huge. Tx is over 1640km across I10.
~ratthing Wed, Dec 2, 1998 (11:52) #43
i heard a story once about some european tourists who had stopped in new york. their plan was to spend a day in new york city, drive overnight to washington for the day, then drive overnight to Orlando florida, then take another overnight drive to dallas, then to LA. they did not realize how long it would take (1 to 5 days) it was going to take to get from place to place. stella and i live in san antonio, texas. my father in law lives in dallas, texas, and to get to his home from ours is about a 5.5 hour drive!
~autumn Wed, Dec 2, 1998 (11:52) #44
A German family lived in our former apartment complex for a while, and they once mentioned that they were planning to drive to Texas "for the weekend".
~TIM Wed, Dec 2, 1998 (11:52) #45
I get quite a kick out of that sort of thing. I had come across several people that were going to see all of the sites in Texas in one day. some day! it'd take a minimum of 2500 Miles of driving.

A gardener once told me that he planned to go to Panama by visiting his brother in New York City and getting a lift from him in his car...
