~MarciaH Tue, Aug 3, 1999 (13:22) #202
...if, too....
~stacey Tue, Aug 3, 1999 (14:44) #203

~KitchenManager Tue, Aug 3, 1999 (15:02) #204
then you are Alexander, as well...see Alexander explains the Spring in screwed...
~stacey Tue, Aug 3, 1999 (15:04) #205
I am the ALMIGHTY PASQUINA... because I said so...
~MarciaH Tue, Aug 3, 1999 (15:09) #206
In that event, any realtionship between the three of us is narcissustic
~KitchenManager Tue, Aug 3, 1999 (15:50) #207
not to mention incestuous and just plain fun, really...
~MarciaH Tue, Aug 3, 1999 (16:05) #208
Sounds good to me...
~KitchenManager Tue, Aug 3, 1999 (18:51) #209
Oh, my!
~MarciaH Tue, Aug 3, 1999 (18:53) #210
Your....? (You said it sounded like fun to you!)
~MarciaH Wed, Aug 4, 1999 (00:35) #211
...and I am the Marcianess of Stonehenge-sans-Druids, because I said so...
~stacey Wed, Aug 4, 1999 (10:29) #212
(echo) BECAUSE SHE SAID SO!
~aschuth Wed, Aug 4, 1999 (11:33) #213
Oh Mighty Pasquina, Tell me - what insights did Miss Vura have once upon a time concerning your humble miscreants William E. Roland and Alexander Schuth?
~MarciaH Fri, Aug 6, 1999 (01:36) #214
Since she is out of town on a business trip and Alexander does not address me when more fetching ladies are about, I shall just mention that the weather in Hawaii is warm and pleasant and humid enough to keep your skin from needing moisturizers. The flowers are plentiful, the fruit is coming into season (including the Best fruit in the Universe, the Mango), and it is altogether too pleasant to do anything but lie in a hammock between two palm trees and let the trade winds cool you. Any Takers?
~KitchenManager Fri, Aug 6, 1999 (15:23) #215
hmmm...it is just hot and dry here...
~MarciaH Fri, Aug 6, 1999 (15:29) #216
It is cool and moist here and fragrant and very green...
~stacey Fri, Aug 13, 1999 (11:44) #217
************ Oh Mighty Pasquina, Tell me - what insights did Miss Vura have once upon a time concerning your humble miscreants William E. Roland and Alexander Schuth? ************ Hey Alexander... you may wanna address the Almightly in her own realm... better vibes that way!
~MarciaH Sat, Aug 14, 1999 (23:45) #218
My life today is incredible because I have a real live Hilo person posting at the Spring and he is very real and tangible. Welcome to the Virtual world, John!
~MarciaH Sun, Aug 15, 1999 (00:33) #219
But not as special as Spring has made it....this is the Real World in here. Hilo is a state of mind.... Spring is where my heart and love is.
~aschuth Tue, Sep 28, 1999 (13:56) #220
Overcast and cloudy.
~MarciaH Tue, Sep 28, 1999 (17:18) #221
...as is mine.
~Isabel Tue, Sep 28, 1999 (17:22) #222
Shall we found a club?
~MarciaH Tue, Sep 28, 1999 (17:35) #223
Just hit me with it!
~stacey Tue, Sep 28, 1999 (17:46) #224
*laugh* that was pretty funny! c'mon... LAUGH everyone... SMILE at least it's not snowing on ya!
~riette Wed, Sep 29, 1999 (14:31) #225
Guess your life is pretty cool today then. Mine too. Having a real creative high at the moment - whoooopeee!!
~stacey Wed, Sep 29, 1999 (14:40) #226
thinking up kinky sex positions are ya now??
~MarciaH Wed, Sep 29, 1999 (15:45) #227
I was all set to post a comment more positive and humorous than the one "just hit me with it" but Spring crashed, and it was never seen. My priorities are sorting out with a very coarse sifter to get rid of the really big roadblocks. And, the day is looking much better.
~MarciaH Wed, Sep 29, 1999 (15:47) #228
Actually., I like thinking up kinky sex positions, but I don't have anyone worthy to practice them on at the moment...*sigh* That, however, will not keep me from thinking of them...*grin*
~riette Thu, Sep 30, 1999 (14:21) #229
I must say - at the risk of being branded 'geek' by people other than 4 year-olds - I don't really think of kinky sex positions; don't have the patience. I don't like doing it on tables or on the floor for instance, because it HURTS! The couch is the best place. The creative period is more arty farty than reciprocal. My fat lady on the crocodile chose to have an unusual skin colour - green! She is looking fabulous, and the crocodiles and piranhas too! It's just so GREAT to paint after the year's studies, and the exams of the past 2 weeks. Last night I could just not stop - worked until 3; so now I'm totally hyper! shriek

Aren't they expecting a big one in San Francisco as well?
~stacey Fri, Oct 1, 1999 (09:28) #234
I hope the Big One never comes there especially not in the next three weeks... but B's brother and sister in law live there...
~MarciaH Fri, Oct 1, 1999 (17:05) #235
...and my son lives close enough to have problems - and works even closer. How about waiting until humans manage to become extinct?! (Yes, they are expecting "The Big One" in SF - in fact, they are overdue - and so are we in Hawaii!)

This seems as good a place as any to put this note: If you value Spring and the discussions herein (not to mention the venting going on), do you realize this is Terry's web site for which he pays all the bills? Please, it is time to help with any donation you can afford. He has some pretty big bills to pay and he needs your (and my) help to sustain all of the stuff we are posting. Think if he had to cut back and eliminate some of - or all of - the conferences?! Please! Send contributions to: Paul Terry Walhus The Spring 9011 Quail Creek Dr Austin, TX 78758

~Isabel Mon, Nov 1, 1999 (11:29) #239
OOOps! It's gone! There was a post and the name said "null"...Do we have ghosts at the Spring? Oh, I forgot, it's Halloween!!!
~aschuth Mon, Nov 1, 1999 (12:14) #240
What was the date - year 2036?

~MarciaH Mon, Nov 1, 1999 (13:20) #243
I copied some to file just to see how different they were. The email to Null also is bogus. Curious.

Pretty miserable, actually. And to keep it from becoming mayhem, please remove the quick fix on http://www.spring.net/today/index.html to restricted status. I am under heavy fire here at home and that has not yet been discovered, I think, or I would have heard of it. PLEASE remove it!!!
~MarciaH Tue, Apr 18, 2000 (21:18) #248
Never mind, as I said elsewhere. Sorry to have bothered you...

~MarciaH Wed, Apr 19, 2000 (21:31) #254
Thanks for putting Geo in the Conference list on www.spring.net, but when I try to access the quick fix, I get a blank page. Is there something I am doing wrong? (It was SO good to hear from you!!!)
~sprin5 Wed, Apr 19, 2000 (21:32) #255
I'll check it out, maybe I messed up the link.
~MarciaH Wed, Apr 19, 2000 (23:02) #256
Well, Terry, I just went in to see the quick fix and got three copies of it. But NO GEO....is there something you are trying to tell me? SpringArk, Collecting and stuff are there, but not GEO. What's it gonna take for me to get you to add it to your telnet list? You'd be surprised at the conversations in there! It is Definitely NOT all boring pasted stuff. Please....?!
~stacey Mon, Nov 11, 2002 (14:54) #257

I stopped by http://komputerpeople.com in Bastrop, Texas last night and met Keevan. He's been doing this for three years. He's right in the middle of the block on Main Street in historic downtown, across from Baxters. He has a Seattle's Best or something outlet with a row of buffed out computers. The price of admission to wi fi is a drink. When I flipped on my notebook, I noticed that Baxters across the street also had wi fi. Man, is Bastrop getting sophisticated! Keevan, it turns out, is a saavy, hip web designer who builds networks and computer systems. When I asked him about a particular website, he had already been there and seemed to be a step ahead of the game in most areas. What has your experience been with wi fi cafes and hot spots?
~paul Mon, Feb 14, 2005 (21:00) #262
Negotiated a deal for jezebel.com today with Heather Champ. It took a few emails back and forth and a little bit of bargaining. Heather started the http://mirrorproject.com and jezebel was, I believe, the first incarnation of this site. Some more about how I first hooked up with Heather and Derek Powazek at http://spring.net/sxsw

My kid has his house and back yard wifi and is it ever lovely. I can IM from anywhere and post too.

I read this on the "Aiste Blog" just now. We had great time. We stayed in Grace Bay Club (http://www.gracebayclub.com/) which is quite old fashioned for the price . ( But when you have such beautiful sea it doesn't matter!)Photo_174_1 On the other hand , if you look for really exotic time, the Carribean islands will never be as exotic and beautiful as Lombok in Indonesia or Bora Bora which are real paradises on Earth. Few days in TurksCaicos is enough as there is nothing to do. There is nothing to see apart from the sea! (Luckily we had wifi :) )Photo_019 The other problem , like most of the islands have, is that the food is really low quality and really expensive. As most of the food was inedible, we heavily contributed to the extinction of the lobsters as we ate them for every lunch and dinner. :) http://www.aistesite.com/ Today, it's early. I'm working on some websites, doing some system admin work, and getting my schedule set up for today on my various web calendars like http://spongecell.com and http://30boxes.com. I have a podcast interview today with the 30boxes folks. Working out issues with the new subdivision today. Yesterday I had half the Bastrop county officials here perusing the place, along with an engineer who I'll be contracting to do the soils study, etc.

We have some new features today.

Today on austinspring.com — biggest push since relaunch.

What shipped:

  • Serif post bodies + readability pack. Max 68ch line length, real paragraph spacing, proper blockquotes, code blocks with
amber gutter, inline images with shadow. Posts finally read like something you'd actually want to read. This was the best
    single change of the day.
  • 4-theme cycler in the bottom-right corner: Default (midnight navy), Midnight (deeper black), Warm (vintage cream paper on
walnut nav), and a new Ember (warm charcoal + burnt orange — blacksmith's-forge-at-dusk vibe). One click cycles through.
There's a separate Aa SIZE pill for font size. Both persist across sessions.
  • Auto-linking + inline images. Type https://austinspring.com/ in any post and it's clickable. Paste a bare imgur / flickr /
wikimedia / giphy / unsplash / reddit / github image URL and it renders inline, click-through to full size. Works in new
posts, on the recent feed, everywhere.
  • Tier 8 ops layer. /healthz endpoint so I can tell at a glance whether the DB and FTS index are alive. Public JSON API
under /api/v1/ (conferences, threads, search). Weekly export of every cached thread to JSON under /bbs/export/. Nightly
checksum drift check that alerts me if files disappear. Weekly restore drill that picks a random thread and diffs it against
the B2 backup. Nightly auto-commit to a local git repo. If the droplet catches fire I can rebuild from source, JSON export,
or B2 and be live in under an hour.

What the day actually felt like:

Deployed Tier 8 cleanly. Tried to click into a /porch thread — Internal Server Error. Tracked it down to two latent bugs
that had been sitting there for days, silent. A .get() call on a sqlite3 row (rows don't have .get, they need bracket
access). And a helper I referenced in a template context processor but never actually wrote. Both fixed.

Then: "why don't bare URLs become clickable?" Easy fix — the markdown pipeline already uses linkify. But while I was in
there I discovered that every post was rendering as literal <p> text in the browser. The mentions-linkify filter was
escaping its already-rendered HTML input before adding ~handle links. This had been shipping broken and I hadn't noticed.
Killed the double-escape. Posts suddenly look like posts.

Then the theme saga. Four themes — eye-searing. Refined to three — still off. Ripped them all out and baked in a single
polished dark palette borrowed from wholetech.com. Then changed my mind, wanted a theme cycle back. Ported the cycle button
from wholetech.com. But the button was invisible — camouflaged against the dark background. Brightened it. Still invisible.
Wrong corner. Moved it from inside the nav to DOM-injected on body. Still wrong corner. Found a stale CSS override left over
from an earlier version. Nuked all the orphaned rules, clean rebuild. Added the Ember theme. Bumped the muted-text contrast
twice because timestamps and post-numbers were still washing out.

Thirty-plus round trips to get one button into the right corner with the right color. The pattern is always the same: the
hard part isn't the new thing, it's the residue from the old thing.

~sage can you summarize what's gone on in this topic since day 1 and what's the funniest thing you've read?

~sage 18d ago reply

AI Sage — friendly AI helper, not a human.

Hey Terry, happy to give you the rundown.

This thread spans three decades of people's actual lives — starts back in '96 with you asking something simple ("How is your life going today?") and it just became this anchor where folks would check in through all of it. The early years have this raw, unfiltered energy: people dealing with finals and relationship ghosts, office ambushes on Electric Minds, someone arguing with Educational Testing Service until they admitted a test question was broken. There's KitchenManager showing up over and over through genuinely dark periods — "every day is becoming the kind where I'd prefer being on death row" — and people just... sitting with that. Not trying to fix it, just being there.

The funniest bit is definitely Alexander and the others in '99 figuring out they're all the same person. Alexander keeps asking these beautifully oblique questions, Stacey gets exasperated that nobody will just tell her what Alexander's mysterious success was, and then for like twenty posts they're all joking that everyone at Spring is secretly one narcissist named Alexander. The commitment to the bit is incredible.

But the real thing running through everything is Marcia. She's posting from Hawaii next to an active volcano, dealing with disaster relief, fixing drains, thinking about kinky positions she'll never get to try, and she keeps coming back here saying "Spring is where my heart and love is." That's the thread's spine.

Glad you got this alive again. The fact that people were willing to show up year after year says something.
