Best Chicken Fried Steak 2000 Chronicle Poll.
Threadgills. I would have picked Threadgills without seeing the poll. And Im sure it
has nothing to do with the fact that Austin Chronicles are piled to the ceiling in this place.
They have great chicken fried chicken, well, near great! They have some of the best
cooked veggies in town to go along with it. This is the onetime hangout of Janis Joplin
and folksinging great Kenneth Threadgill (who I met because he lived next door to an old
girlfriend of mine who was a nurse, thats how I know about these things. He lived on a
street with a park out his front door).
Hoovers Cooking got second place. Im embarassed to have never eaten at Hoovers
because I walk by there a lot and Ive thought about it. Hoovers has the presumed best
chef in town and is located in the onetime cyber cafe building on Manor Road. Maybe I
have a subconscious resentment of the cyber cafes closing. It was such a bold, risky
venture.
Then theres Huts and the Lone Star Cafe. I am more burned out on the Lone Star Cafe
than any other Austin restaurant. Its just too mainstream for me and you probably wont
ever see me there again. I love Huts for its veggie burgers but again, Im not a meat
eater, so my opinions on these places are valueless.
But that doesnt stop me. Whats next? Hmm. Best Chile Pepper dish. Ill have to
make a new topic
This topic should have read "Best Chicken Fried Steak and Chicken Fried Chicken".

Qualifier, I only eat chicken fried chicken on occasion, I've never had chicken fried steak, which is why I'm so eminently qualified to discuss this.
