Yet Another Showdown
Oklahoma visits Nebraska for another titanic battle in this legendary series, and meets a top 10-ranked team for the third time in eight games this season. Texas was No. 5 (both polls) and Kansas State was No. 9 (ESPN/USA Today) when the Sooners met those teams earlier in this campaign. The 11 a.m. CDT game will be televised nationally by ABC with Brent Musburger, Gary Danielson and Jack Arute describing the action.
Due to the Big 12 Conference's scheduling rotation, Oklahoma and Nebraska will take a two-year break after this season. Next season, Nebraska, Kansas State and Kansas go off the Sooner schedule as the North Division's representatives to be replaced by Colorado, Iowa State and Missouri.

Texas has won 3 games against far lesser opponents, not making the spread twice.
And now, Roy Williams has a hamstring injury. He's, aurguably, the best receiver in the nation.
Texas season may ride on the severity of this injury.
for more on hamstrings:
http://www.thestretchinghandbook.com/archives/hamstring-injury-treatment.htm
A snippet:
If you do happen to suffer from a hamstring injury, it's important that correct first aid principles are applied immediately. The RICER regime explains the correct treatment for all muscle strain injuries. RICER stand for Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation, and then obtaining a Referral from a qualified sports doctor or physiotherapist. So, as soon as a hamstring injury occurs, rest the injured limb, apply ice to the effected area, apply a compression bandage and elevate the limb if possible. This treatment needs to continue for at least 48 to 72 hours. This is the most critical time for the injured area, correct treatment now can mean the difference between an annoying injury or a permanent, re-occurring, debilitating injury.
After the first 72 hours obtain a referral from a qualified professional and start a comprehensive rehabilitation program. This should include a great deal of strength and stretching exercises, as well as other rehabilitation activities such as massage and ultra-sound.

espn.com:
Oklahoma dipped into its play-bag of tricks against Missouri -- out of
necessity -- and the trickery paid dividends. Oklahoma scored a
touchdown on a fake field goal with 6:33 left to escape Columbia with a
31-24 victory Oct. 5. Holder Matt McCoy took the snap, waited a moment,
then threw a perfect lob to freshman tight end Chris Chester, who went
up and caught the ball between two defenders for his first career
reception. Nate Hybl's 2-point conversion pass to Curtis Fagan made it
31-24. Coach Bob Stoops said he liked his chances of the fake working
better than the chances of Trey DiCarlo making a 31-yard field goal.
DiCarlo had already missed an extra point and field goals of 34 and 43
yards. "I felt the percentages were pretty good it was going to be OK,"
said Stoops, whose team plays second-ranked Texas next week in Dallas.
The Longhorns said they weren't looking past Oklahoma State to their
matchup with rival Oklahoma. Right. Second-ranked Texas will have a
hard time getting anyone to believe them after the Oct. 5 17-15 victory
over the Cowboys that took cornerback Rod Babers' defensive stop on a
2-point conversion and a drive-killing interception in the fourth
quarter to seal the win. "It was a good, hard fight," said quarterback
Chris Simms, who passed for 267 yards and a touchdown and ran for
another in the Big 12 opener for both teams. "I think it's really good
we got a good hard test like this." Coach Mack Brown agreed. "It's good
to be in tight games because our kids are tested. You need to be in
some fights. It's dangerous for us every week. I hope our fans learned
something today," Brown said after the game.
Next week's Texas OU game should be awesome, it's the game of the
season for us Longhorn fans. It may decide who faces Miami in the
national title later this year.
Come early, stay late, we'll be partying on Spring before, during and
after the game next Saturday. Check out our insider coverage and live
audio feed.

Today's game would be an excellent opportunity for the Horns to redeem themselves after last weeks loss to Oklahoma (after leading for the first three quarters).
To put your virtual dollars on the game (we'll give you $7500 to start) see the football pool topic in this conference.
Gametime is 6 pm tonight and the Horns are playing on the road against a top twenty team. Tough schedule. Tough challenge.

What had been up until now Mack Brown's moral, family oriented paradise is
now cracked.
To quote austin360.com's Kirk Bohl's:
Benson turned himself in to an Austin court Tuesday morning on a Class A
misdemeanor charge of criminal trespassing. He is accused of breaking into
a South Austin apartment to retrieve what he said was a stolen television.
Benson's first brush with the law, involving a marijuana possession
allegation in his hometown of Midland, ended with dropped charges. Benson
might well end up cleared of the current allegations, too.
Nevertheless, Brown must take action this time, suspending Benson for at
least a game for conduct detrimental to the team.
If for no other reason than becoming another distraction to a 5-2 team
that so desperately needs a clear sense of focus and purpose to accomplish
what few goals remain available to them, Benson deserves harsher treatment
than he received after the Midland incident. Brown announced Tuesday that
Benson will not start this week against Baylor but didn't say if he will
play.
"We will decide more about his participation on a day-to-day basis as we
follow the case," Brown said. "He's weathered storms before. I think
you'll see him stand up and weather this one as well." Benson's reputation
and the entire image of an operation Brown has so valiantly tried to cast
as a model program are at stake. A crack in that picture would do
immeasurable harm to a program that has already been rocked by a second
blowout loss to archrival Oklahoma and a mediocre record in Brown's
biggest games.
End Quote
Texas will probably beat Baylor without Cedric, who was once upon a time a
Heisman hopeful, in fact they would probably beat Baylor with Cedric the
Entertainer at running back.
But Mack Brown's dreams may be shattered. This is his first suspension of
a player at UT if he in fact holds Cedric back from Saturday's game.
Cedric shouldn't have busted down the door of that woman's South Austin
apartment to get back his plasma tv. Even if the Austin cops are useless
in a stolen property case. He had too much on the line.
What was he thinking?

Mack Brown is the kind of coarch that doesn't make bold moves. He's the
kind of coach that "should have" done this or that but waited too long.
He's not like Mackovic who called the famous pass play in a running
situation in the Sugar Bowl to win that bowl game.
So in a game where Vincent Young had just had six pretty good drives and
had come of age what would be the last thing you would expect on the final
drive.
The last person you'd expect to see on the sidelines would be Vincent
Young.
Enter Chance Mock. Lubbock born. Son of a Texas Tech linebacker. He
entered the game with two minutes on the clock and Texas down to Texas
Tech by 5 points, trailing 40-35.
The same guy that Noah and I had been debating about with me saying Young
should run the whole show. The same guy who hadn't really played much for
the last 4-5 games.
So what happens? Mock completes a pass to Roy Williams. A 54 yarder.
Roy's brother used to play for Texas Tech and Roy grew up in East Texas,
in Texas Tech country. His brother was at the game wearing a Texas Tech
jacket, bright red in a sea of burnt orange. Oh yeah, and under the Texas
Tech jacket he had a burnt orange jersey with Roy's number on it.
With seconds left in the game, he throws a 19 yarder to BJ Johnson (who
may not have any East Texas roots as far as I know). Then Mock himself
punches it in
to the end zone himself with seconds left in the game.
Storybook? Hollywood? You bet! It was the most exciting football game
I've seen this season, maybe, arguably, the game of the year.

This time maybe UT - the Texas Longhorn football team - got it right.
Mack Brown, or whoever hired some NFL guy named Tomey and another NFL guy
to coach defense and offense. Finally, coaching on the field!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
But wait till these NFL coaches, who are used to watching the likes of
Peyton Manning, get a hold of the scouting videos of, gasp, Baylor and
Rice back to back. That will scare the daylights out of them.
Scary stuff! Baylor and Rice back to back.

By CHIP BROWN / The Dallas Morning News
PASADENA, Calif. Wearing his white No. 3 jersey and jeans with a Texas Rose Bowl champions baseball cap slightly cock-eyed, running back Selvin Young took in the celebration with his camcorder.
He stood next to the podium where his best friend, quarterback Vince Young, answered questions from reporters in the wake of becoming a national star in UT's 38-37 Rose Bowl triumph over Michigan.
"Vince is blowing up," Selvin Young said into his video camera. "It'll be me and him in the backfield next season."
ERICH SCHLEGEL/DMN
There's good news for Texas coach Mack Brown: Budding star quarterback Vince Young will be by his side again next season. The Texas offense loses five key seniors from this year's team, including receiver Tony Jeffery, fullback Will Matthews, tight end Bo Scaife and center Jason Glynn.
The biggest loss, however, will be Doak Walker Award-winner Cedric Benson, who ran for 1,834 yards and 19 touchdowns this season, giving the Texas offense its identity.
"Whatever Cedric finishes with this season will be my goal for next year and hopefully more," said Selvin Young, who will be a junior next season after redshirting with a broken ankle suffered in the second game against Arkansas.
"I feel like I'm going to step in where Cedric left off, and I can contribute that same amount and hopefully more. It's time for a new life, hopefully something better."
Young, a threat on punt and kick returns with career averages of 17.5 yards and 23.8 yards, respectively, also hopes to lead the nation in special teams next season.
Coaches say they see a hunger in Selvin Young that gives them confidence UT's rushing attack, ranked second nationally this season, can continue rolling. Young, who missed two games last season with a groin injury, has a career average of 5 yards per carry (132 attempts for 661 yards) in 26 games over three seasons.
"Sometimes you don't realize what you had until it's gone," Texas offensive coordinator Greg Davis said. "There's an excitement in Selvin we haven't seen. He's excited about spring practice, and I'm not sure he would have been excited if he hadn't sat out this year."
Texas will also have several freshmen to choose from, including top national recruits Jamaal Charles of Port Arthur Memorial and Henry Melton of Grapevine, both of whom have orally committed to the Longhorns.
At receiver, freshman Jordan Shipley, who redshirted this season with a torn knee ligament, Limas Sweed, Nate Jones, Myron Hardy and George Walker will be expected to take over for Jeffery, the team's leading receiver this season.
Freshman Ramonce Taylor, who averaged 10.1 yards per carry and 21.3 yards per reception this season, is expected to be used at running back and receiver similar to USC's Reggie Bush. If Texas wins the recruiting war for tight end Martellus Bennett of Alief Taylor, it would help ease the loss of Scaife and complement David Thomas.
On defense, Texas loses safety Phillip Geiggar and All-American linebacker Derrick Johnson, the heart and soul of the defense the last four years.
That role will move to middle linebacker Aaron Harris of North Mesquite, who led UT with 8 tackles in the Rose Bowl and finished second to Johnson's 129 tackles with 117 this season. Junior-to-be Garnet Smith of Arlington Lamar, sophomore-to-be Scott Derry and sophomore-to-be Robert Killebrew will battle it out to join Harris and strongside linebacker Eric Hall on the field.
"I'm ready to take over," Harris said. "We're gonna miss Derrick. But we've learned from him."
Two juniors defensive tackle Rod Wright and safety Michael Huff of Irving Nimitz have said they are contemplating a jump to the NFL and will make a decision in the next few weeks.
Kicker Dusty Mangum of Mesquite also moves on and will be replaced by junior David Pino.
Texas coach Mack Brown was asked if next year's team has a chance to be even better than this year's team.
"We lose some guys who have been pretty special to the University of Texas," Brown said. "But if our other guys can pull tight and become a team like this one was, we have a chance. Sometimes you don't have to have the best players, just the best team."

LONGHORNS
Friday, October 7, 2005
Q&A with Suzanne Halliburton
Q. Will you explain the zone read offense?
A. Texas implemented this offense in the middle of the 2003 season, a week
after they lost to Oklahoma.
The quarterback lines up in the shotgun with only one running back beside him.
Before handing off, the quarterback looks to the defensive end or outside
linebacker. If the outside guys are focusing more on him, the quarterback
hands the ball off. If the defender commits to the inside, the quarterback
keeps the ball and runs around the outside.
Texas since has added more wrinkles to the play to make the defenses guess
that it's going a certain way. The best way to beat the zone read is to blitz
players from angles the quarterback isn't anticipating. OU did that a year ago
in shutting out the Longhorns.
My money's on the Horns against OU this weekend.

The National Champion Texas Longhorn football team starts practice today.
si.com:
Texas fans expect a battle between freshmen Colt McCoy and Jevan Snead, and they'll get one. It will just start in secrecy and could take a while to develop into a full-blown duel.
Brown has already named McCoy, who redshirted last season, as No. 1 heading into Monday's drills. He wants to give Snead, who was still in high school in December, time to mature.
Snead will get his chance to compete for the job in time for the 2006 season opener, but Brown wants to take him slow.
"It would be unfair to throw Jevan out there immediately because he's only been in school a month. We do want him to be able to relax," Brown said. "Jevan's never taken a snap here. Colt's been here six months."

Well the Horns are out in the second round of the NCAA basketball tournament. They made to the top 32 but couldn't get to the sweet 16. There's a slight chance Kevin Durant will be back next year, but more likely the national player of the year will be NBA bound.
