The Univeristy of Texas Longhorns have a great tradition and orange blood runs thick around Austin. Coach Mackovic has put together a team with national championship potential, will this be the year they put it all together? Let talk hookem horns here.
~terry Mon, Jul 22, 1996 (10:26) #1
This is the football only item, I should have put that in the title. The Runnin' basketball Horns will be another item.
~terry Thu, Aug 22, 1996 (23:45) #2
They had an item on the news tonight about how the Horns are enjoying their high tech - low tech *grass* playing field. It cost a million bucks to set up a field where the rain is absorbed without ponding at the rate of up to 5 inches per hour. The UT running backs will be able to turn on a dime now. And UT has some pretty incredible running backs (Ricky Williams, et al). Today was a pretty good test with the Hrons practicing and all the rain we've been getting.
~TJ Tue, Sep 3, 1996 (17:36) #3
Well all you horn fans, you have just a short time until the all time # 1 team in the Nation will once again lead you thru a few quarters of false hope then crush you in the fourth to once again leave Texas with a victory. The Fighting Irish as always will PLAY LIKE CHAMPIONS and leave the Longhorns grazing on their new grass, once again making that great Texas traditional statement, Wait til next year.
~terry Thu, Sep 5, 1996 (00:52) #4
That million dollar hunk of grass didn't hurt the Horns one bit in their opener. In fact, they played on it like they knew every inch of it in a pounding downpour against my old school, Mizzou. Lightning was a major threat but hardly any fans split, they stuck around and the Horns rewarded their bravery with a stellar 2nd half. Ricky Williams played an awesome running game and Priest Holmes is *definitely* back among the living. These backs just stayed on their feet again and again and salvaged more and more yardage out of what could have been losses. Chalk it up for the Horns. But they are going to have to step it up for Notre Dame. If they play like this in the first half against the Irish, they'll definitely be in trouble.
~TJ Thu, Sep 5, 1996 (10:11) #5
You said it all, their own field, pounding rain and mizz who????? I have no doubt that Texas will play a much better first half vs. ND it the staying with them that will cost.
~TJ Wed, Sep 11, 1996 (17:35) #6
Come on Horns and Irish fans. No one else even interested?????? Would like to know of a place in or around Austin to watch the game with Irish Fans??????? Leons Country Store in Rockne might be a great place seeing as the town was named after Knute (A little texas/irish trivia for all you fans). My prediction still stands, Texas leads through 3 quarters, then the Fighting Irish rise up and in the memory of all the great Notre Dame teams, make ground beef out of the longhorns. GO IRISH PLAY LIKE A CHAMPION TODAY
~boyce2 Wed, Sep 18, 1996 (11:15) #7
I'll be watching this game at home, I'll want to catch every play, and I don't need the hype of screaming fans, I'm hyped enough as it is... Prediction: Horns by 10
~TJ Wed, Sep 18, 1996 (11:50) #8
Well boyce, you are obviously a misguided Texas fan. Truth is, Irish will win because they have more experience in the big games and in winning them. Irish by 4.
~terry Thu, Sep 19, 1996 (07:51) #9
Both wrong. Horns by 3.
~TJ Fri, Sep 20, 1996 (12:58) #10
OK guys, just 1 more day. Lou will find a way to win the game!!! Irish win in Texas (move into top 5), then defeat Ohio State and Washington at home. Glide through the rest of the season (Navy, Army, BC, USC). Finish season undefeated and play as the #2 in the National Championship game Vs. #1 Penn State. Nittany Lions get beat in a close one. Notre Dame # 1 1996 National Champions.
~TJ Fri, Sep 20, 1996 (12:58) #11
After this game, can we have a Fighting Irish Page??????????????
~TJ Fri, Sep 20, 1996 (12:59) #12
After this game, can we have a Fighting Irish Page??????????????
~boyce2 Fri, Sep 20, 1996 (13:03) #13
In yesterday's Statesman, Lou Holtz claimed, "God didn't put me on this earth to lose 4 times in Austin." So now God AND TJ want him to win?! Sounds a little desperate to me... Although, since God has taken over the job of picking Miss America (the current winner claims) maybe he's picking football games too. Funny how he can't get a republican in the white house, though...
~terry Fri, Sep 20, 1996 (19:08) #14
Only if Notre Dame wins the game TJ, only then can you have a Fighting Irish page.
~terry Sat, Sep 21, 1996 (00:21) #15
Wet. Wet. Wet. That describes the pregame conditions. This definitely plays to the Horns.
~terry Sat, Sep 21, 1996 (11:49) #16
This is being hyped as the biggest game in Austin in 40 years. It rained all night and the skies are cloudy. I'm picking the Horns to win 34-31. If it's a low scoring game, Notre Dame will take it. Comparisons: Lou Holtz: always whining Mackovic: sipping wine Holtz may be the better motivator but Mackovic is the better offensive strategist. Holtz says "it will sadden a lot of people if Notre Dame loses". Aw gee. I was in HEB and it was a madhouse a little while ago. An hour before gametime and everyone's lined up to get their party stuff. Texas goes at at 6th nationally, Notre Dame 9th. Dick Vitale is picking Notre Dame to win, but, hey, this isn't basketball, babeeeee. He's in town for the game (two of his daughters we to Notre Dame and one married Ron Pawlus backup qb). Go Horns, hookem babeeeee!
~terry Sat, Sep 21, 1996 (11:55) #17
It's the biggest thing that's ever, ever ever happened in Austin, Texas. - Rooster Andrews
~Mariner Sat, Sep 21, 1996 (19:09) #18
Can someone answer me just one question about the game? Where in the hell did the Horns PASSING GAME GO in the 2nd Half? I kept seeing Mike Adams standing behind Mackovic (In Trouble???), and was confused!! Once again Mackovic's questionable play-calling loses us a big game......Oh well.....It was a pretty exciting game......Little Earl for Heismann!!!! On to Virginia to inflict some retaliation!!!
~Mlydle Sun, Sep 22, 1996 (01:09) #19
4 Reasons for the longhorns choking: 1. James Brown's interception in the fourth quarter and the subsequent longhorn drive stalling out after 3 and out - what was he thinking throwing to a back who was behind the line 5 yards and had a defensive player on his back 2. The Longhorn punters shank in the fourth quarter which gave the Irish great field position to kick the winning field goal 3. The defense for not rising to the occasion and stopping the Irish offense when the needed to 4. Longhorn coaches - for being too impatient and for calling too many passing plays when they should have been running down the clock Another question, why does all the Austin media always get unrealistic expectations regarding Longhorn football, National Champs, I dont think so. 8-3 or 7-4 with a minor, maybe major bowl game if they are lucky.
~TJ Mon, Sep 23, 1996 (15:28) #20
Well Well Well, Good Monday morning to all you Horn Fans. Now who's whining, (mariner, mlydle) responses 18 & 19. As for you Terry and Boyce, better review responses 3, 6, 8 and 10. Next Ohio State at Home then the National Championship Go Notre Dame P.S. Fighting Irish Page has a nice ring to it
~terry Tue, Sep 24, 1996 (06:42) #21
OK OK Rub it in. So what user name do you want for the Frightning Irish web page?
~TJ Tue, Sep 24, 1996 (10:22) #22
I really don't need a web page for the Fighting Irish because there already is one. But it sure was nice to know that I could have one....... Just make it Topic 26 "Fighting Irish Sports"
~boyce2 Tue, Sep 24, 1996 (12:16) #23
Go Bucks!
~TJ Wed, Sep 25, 1996 (13:57) #24
Is that all you have to say for yourself boyce???? GO BUCKS???? Just wait, you guys will have all basketball season to dump on the worst team in the Big East But until then ON TO THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP with the FIGHTING IRISH OF NOTRE DAME. This week OSU falls while looking up at touchdown Jesus at South Bend. I actually think that Texas is the better team in this weeks mishap but could fall in Virginia's home. Winning the big one and the close one still a problem (same as last week) for the Texas coaches. My heart tells me to take Texas by 7 but my gut tell me to take Virginia and 2. Does anyone know the current line???? Can Texas shake off the shock of last weeks loss??? Hope to see you all soon in the new topic?????? FIGHTING IRISH SPORTS.
~TJ Wed, Sep 25, 1996 (13:58) #25
~boyce2 Wed, Sep 25, 1996 (16:34) #26
Yeah. Go Bucks. You'll get yours. If last week demonstrated anything, it's that ND and Texas are in the same league, well short of national championship caliber. I think the Buckeyes will show us what it takes to compete. The line is 3 1/2, VA is favored. Meanwhile, the line on the OSU ND game has swung five points: Yesterday it was ND by 3, now OSU by 2. I would have put money I don't have on the bucks plus 3, this appears a little more realistic.
~terry Mon, Nov 18, 1996 (09:10) #27
The Horns lived up to their potential in this weekends game against Kansas. Ricky Williams dreadlocks were flying and he rushed for almost as many yards as Kansas star running back but with about half as many attempts. 190 yards I believe. This clinches a bowl game and paves the way to a possible Big 12 title for the Horns. A win over A&M would really be a season maker now. I hope the Horns keep the running game in the game plan more.
~terry Wed, Nov 27, 1996 (00:12) #28
Thanksgiving brings the Texas/Texas A&M game is this week. If texas wins, they play the winner of Nebraska/Colorado. If Texas A&M beats Texas (shudder), there will be a three way tie between Texas Tech, Texas, and Texas A&M. Oh my gosh. The bonfire has been lit. The barbs have flown around. Priest Holmes has bared his chest. We're ready to ruuuuuuuuumble!
~terry Sun, Dec 1, 1996 (23:34) #29
I'm glad the Horns (#27) have resurrected their season and are playing the big guys, Nebraska (#3) in my home town, St. Louis. Hook those Huskers!
~terry Tue, Dec 3, 1996 (19:39) #30
Huskers and Horns go to it this Saturday up in St. Louis. Now is *not* the time for Texas defense to let down. They better come to the game early and work out extra hard. I predict UT 21 Nebraska 14. The Nebraska offense has not been showing up for the games lately. Hopefully, they'll stay home in Lincoln this Saturday. Nebraska is a 3 touchdown favorite so I'm going against the grain. Nebraksa has only lost 2 games in the last 3 years!
~Mlydle Sun, Dec 8, 1996 (14:15) #31
It's good to see the Longhorns win the big game. I wonder if channel 3 is going to replay the game so I could record it. I feel sort of guilty for getting on Macs and Brown's case, but one has to give them credit they came through when it counted.
~Mlydle Sun, Dec 8, 1996 (14:19) #32
I really think Nebraska is going to be the Longhorns next big rival. Forget the Aggies, they might be more socially annoying but the Cornhuskers are more of a challenge. Either Maclovic is a genius or he needs to be admitted to Austin State Hospital. That play on 4th and inches took real gonads to call. When you look at the replay, if Brown would have run, he most likely would have been stopped short of the first down. So, luckily, the Nebraska DB (who was not needed to stop Brown) bit for Brown's ru and got beat by Lewis. For all the whining I have done regarding Maclovic and Brown, they came through big time when the marbles were on the table and won the biggest games when it counted i.e. winning the last SWC championship and the first Big 12 championship. I wonder if channel 3 is going to replay the game so I could record it? See you around, Mike Lydle
~terry Sun, Dec 8, 1996 (14:39) #33
He (Mackovic) *didn't* call it. James Brown improvised it. In the post game interview, Mackovic said, "..when he cocked that arm, I thought uh oh not again . . . " The Mackovic bettter pop open one of those $1,000 win bottles after the greatest win in UT history. What a game!
~Mlydle Tue, Dec 10, 1996 (20:43) #34
Yea, it was some game. Have not heard anything about the game being replayed. I could have swore that Mac had called a rollout option run or pass and Brown decided to throw it. Wonder if this might be Mac's last season.
~terry Wed, Dec 11, 1996 (07:49) #35
Don't you think he redeemed himself?
~Mlydle Wed, Dec 11, 1996 (23:36) #36
No doubt Mac redeemed himself. I mean in regards to going elsewhere, like the NFL. Lydle
~ginger Sat, Jun 14, 1997 (21:56) #37
Are the Horns goig to have a good team next year?
~terry Sun, Jun 15, 1997 (02:05) #38
They may, they've lost some All Americans but they have James Brown and Ricky Williams back.
~ginger Sun, Jun 15, 1997 (23:20) #39
Brown is a great QB. And Ricky Williams is "Little Earl".
~terry Sat, Sep 6, 1997 (23:18) #40

Well, UT bowled over Rutgers 48-14 not quite making their spread in our little vanity pool, so legaffe pulls way ahead of the pack with 15,000 virtual dollars. Next week, UCLA on ABC. Heard about the Ricky Williams thing. He got cuffed and hauled off to jail by an overzealous UT cop and the cop got suspended. The cop had his own website, which had a picture of Ronald Reagan on it (it is no longer to be found on the net). Phil Dawson moved in to the number one scoring postion at UT with a 54 yarder and he made a tackle at the 18 yard line off one of his kicks. He has 284 career points now. Ricky Williams ran for 155 yards and three touchdowns and Aaron Humphrey had three interceptions as No. 12 Texas overcame a turnover-filled first half. James Brown may have hurt his ankle so Richard Walton may start next weekend. 2:30 start next Saturday.
~legaffe Sat, Nov 8, 1997 (18:24) #42
Watch me this week.
~terry Sat, Nov 8, 1997 (19:55) #43
We be watching, UT kickoff tonight.
~terry Tue, Oct 6, 1998 (17:35) #44
AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Texas halfback Ricky Williams will be wearing a new number Saturday. Williams has received clearance to switch jersey numbers from No. 34 to No. 37 in honor of former Southern Methodist University running back Doak Walker, who died last month. Williams, who befriended Walker last year after winning the award that bears Walker's name, will wear No. 37 when the Longhorns play Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas on Saturday. Walker played for SMU during the late 1940s, when the football team began playing at the Cotton Bowl, which later became known as "the House That Doak Built." Walker died on Sept. 27 from complications of a skiing accident. "I thought it would be neat to wear 37 in the House That Doak Built," Williams said of the temporary change. "Whether I have a great game or not, I'm going to play with him in my heart, a special thing I can do."
~terry Mon, Nov 2, 1998 (10:11) #45
Horns beat Nebraska!!!!
~osceola Mon, Nov 2, 1998 (13:13) #46
It wasn't a fluke, either. The Horns played a solid game all the way through. Nothing flashy, just good solid football. Nebraska's two losses this year came from Texas teams. Had a good time watching the game at my favorite beer joint. Unfortunately, it's near campus, so when students jammed the streets I had a hell of a time riding a bus home.
~terry Mon, Nov 2, 1998 (14:24) #47
Wathc the national rankings, the Horns should move into the top 25 or something's wrong.
~osceola Mon, Nov 2, 1998 (16:16) #48
They're #20. You can't beat Nebraska and not get in the Top 20. A couple of years ago, I was briefly employed as a tutor to the football players, and at least two are still on the team. One of the nicer guys I tutored sacked the Cornhusker QB. I'm not claiming to have anything to do with that, but I did get him up to a B in history.
~terry Mon, Nov 2, 1998 (18:20) #49
Then you have a piece of this win! .
~terry Tue, Nov 24, 1998 (11:40) #50
In the http://www.austin360.com site there is a quote from Tony Dorsett: "Tony Dorsett came to Memorial Stadium three years ago curious of mind and specific of purpose: to carefully watch the performance of someone who would live in his shadow, chase his legend, be forever linked to his name. Texas' Ricky Williams is threatening Dorsett's NCAA major- college career rushing record." I talked to Dorsett at the game, in fact I have a videotape of my conversation with him. He came for one specific purpose, to watch his son play for Pitt. He's coming Friday to see Ricky again in Austin. Right now Ricky needs 62 yards against Texas A&M on the Friday after Thanksgiving to break the record of 6,082 yards set by Dorsett with Pitt, 1973-76.
~terry Wed, Dec 9, 1998 (11:50) #51
Believe the hype Ricky Williams of Texas is such a dead-solid lock for the Heisman Trophy, Saturday's ceremony is a formality. The only drama will be whether Williams wins by the largest margin in the esteemed award's 64-year history. And he still gets to play in the Cotton Bowl. On Monday, Williams won The Associated Press' first College Player of the Year Award. Can he be another two sport star like Deon and Bo Jackson, he's gotta learn to hit first. The Cotton Bowl, eyeing a home-state team and its likely Heisman Trophy-winning halfback, chose an 8-3 Texas team that's ranked No. 20 over an 11-1, fourth-ranked Kansas State squad that lost to Texas A&M in double-overtime Saturday in the Big 12 championship game. Texas will play Mississippi State, winner of the SEC's West Division. What a season for the Horns.
~terry Mon, Dec 14, 1998 (10:38) #52
Ricky Williams racked up the Heisman. Another little bronze man. Here are the stats. Most Points 1968 O.J. Simpson, USC, 2853. 1976 Tony Dorsett, Pittsburgh, 2357. 1998 Ricky Williams, Texas, 2355 1993 Charlie Ward, Florida State, 2310. 1984 Doug Flutie, Boston College, 2240. First-Place Vote Leaders 1968 O.J. Simpson, USC, 855. 1993 Charlie Ward, Florida State, 740. 1998 Ricky Williams, Texas, 714. 1976 Tony Dorsett, Pittsburgh, 701. 1984 Doug Flutie, Boston College, 678. Widest Margins 1968 1750 O.J. Simpson USC over Leroy Keyes, Purdue 2853-1103. 1993 1622 Charlie Ward Florida State over Heath Shuler, Tennessee 2310-688. 1991 1574 Desmond Howard Michigan over Casey Weldon, Florida State 2077-503. 1998 1563 Ricky Williams Texas over Michael Bishop, Kansas State 2355-792. 1986 1541 Vinny Testaverde Miami over Paul Palmer, Temple 2213-672. What I don't get is why Missouri's quarterback got totally snubbed. That guy was awesome! He seemed better to me than the three runner up quarterbacks.
~terry Tue, Aug 31, 1999 (13:29) #53
Once again, the UT football team has figured out how to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in their season opener against NC State (a basketball school!). But NC State did beat last years national champions in the opening game so it's not all over. UT outplayed them in every way except special teams. The messed up on three punts. Guess what they're practicing this week?
~aschuth Tue, Aug 31, 1999 (14:27) #54
Pick me, me, over her, yoohoo! I know: Football! ;=}
~MarciaH Tue, Aug 31, 1999 (15:07) #55
Terry, that used to be Penn State's line - snatching defeat from the jaws of victory - and usually on ABC before God and everybody. Then everyone would take pot-shots at us for another week. You'll bounce back...it is early yet!
~terry Thu, Sep 2, 1999 (11:59) #56
Today they lost Quentin Jammer. He was a great defensive back. Agile and great aat picking off passes. A big, big loss. Couldn't be a better name for a guy in his position. They'll reshirt him and he'll have two years left. Could it be that next year is the year? Lilke you say, it's still early. About 40 hours till the Stanford game, wonder if there are tickets left?
~MarciaH Thu, Sep 2, 1999 (14:52) #57
Bet not! That should be a really good game - planning to tape and watch since I will be having V'ball tournament duty while it is on...(We play Akron this week - how lame is that?!)
~terry Fri, Sep 3, 1999 (09:21) #58
Sounds lame.
~terry Fri, Sep 3, 1999 (09:28) #59
Mack Brown says the Horns are allowing too much penetration on punts (duh!) and the solution is to put big bodies on big bodies. Kickoff is at 11 tomorrow. Pregame at 9:30 am.
~MarciaH Sat, Sep 4, 1999 (03:00) #60
...and I will be watching Volleyball, but my heart will long for Football...Good luck, Terry. I have never been an admirer of Stanford or their grading system...! (plan to ignore that embarrassment of my alma mater's - who makes up these schedules, anyway?!)
~MarciaH Sun, Sep 5, 1999 (13:07) #61
The 'Horns looked mighty good yesterday, and you will have a season you can brag about. It was fun watching (for the little time I had)live stuff from Austin t where the Spring gurgles and some really neat people live. Congratulations!
~terry Thu, Sep 9, 1999 (09:48) #62
Yep. Yep. Thanks Marcia. The Horns dusted the floor with Stanford. Even the failed field goal turned in to a touchdown. The HOrns could do no wrong, they even blocked a punt. It was like a 40 point plus win. And Chris Simms got his first TD (son of former NFL QB Phil Simms who was in the crowd at Royal Memorial).
~MarciaH Thu, Sep 9, 1999 (15:57) #63
Looks just like his Daddy, too. I think he's gonna make you proud (CS)
~terry Thu, Sep 9, 1999 (17:04) #64
Wow, you saw the game?
~MarciaH Thu, Sep 9, 1999 (17:11) #65
I did, indeed. Taped it as I had to be at T-shirts for the Volleyball tournament, but before I had to leave, I watched it live, and about all I saw was your QB running through the opposition like they were not there, or like Moses parting the Red Sea. If anything happens in Austin and I get the chance to watch it, I will because I want to see as much of it as I can from this far away...until I can actually have an eyeball session with it.
~terry Thu, Sep 9, 1999 (18:52) #66
Rutgers will be on ESPN2 Saturday night.
~mrchips Thu, Sep 9, 1999 (18:58) #67
Young Mr. Simms may will certainly have more ink than did his daddy in his quest to reach the NFL, since his daddy played for perennial football powerhouse *LOL* Morehead State (Minnesota). His daddy, who would still like to be playing, doesn't realize how lucky his "premature" exit to the broadcast booth was. I remember when the Giants were godawful and Simms was a young, highly touted, spectacularly paid (for the time) player taking gamely beatings because of a poor offensive line. Those things do ca ch up with you, sooner or later.
~MarciaH Thu, Sep 9, 1999 (22:55) #68
Thanks for telling us about the Deuce carrying UT-Rutgers game. It will be afternoon here - so even better!
~terry Fri, Sep 10, 1999 (12:00) #69
Yeah, football in the afternoon seems better than night time, somehow. I see where Major Applewhite is creeping up on this years Heismann list. Maybe they'll promote him to General.
~MarciaH Sat, Sep 11, 1999 (17:13) #70
that thought had occurred to me, too...*lol* Football should be played in the afternoon so your can party all night to celebrate the win, or drown your sorrows after a loss. Surely tonight you party!
~MarciaH Sat, Oct 23, 1999 (20:49) #71
He should have been promoted to General after Applewhite's victory over Nebraska - the only team to have beaten them 3 times in the 90's. Congratulations. I posted the score in College Football.
~terry Mon, Oct 25, 1999 (19:24) #72
There's a story behind this photo. Can you guess who the guy is in te orange sleeveless shirt between the two cheerleaders. You'll find the answer in austin news topic in either the austin or the news conference. And isn't that a great picture? And oh, yeah . . . Horns beat Nebraska!
~MarciaH Mon, Oct 25, 1999 (19:36) #73
I have the picture open in another window...I installed it on a photo program and enlarged it and I don't think it is you...I don't think it is William...and I don't think it is Ray Lopez. I know it isn't Mike... OK...going to Austin to see what is the scoop...! Congratulations, by the way...
~terry Tue, Oct 26, 1999 (10:13) #74
Who is it?
~mrchips Tue, Oct 26, 1999 (13:19) #75
Could it be a naked, bongo playing movie star?
~MarciaH Tue, Oct 26, 1999 (13:35) #76
Think so!!! But, I do not watch him in whatever he appears in so I really do not recognize him anyway. Guess I am out of that loop...
~mrchips Wed, Oct 27, 1999 (00:52) #77
He doesn't do English art films.
~MarciaH Wed, Oct 27, 1999 (01:09) #78
...I sorta thought that just might be the case...*smiling puckishly*
~MarciaH Wed, Oct 27, 1999 (01:12) #79
....so its gonna be a good weekend for Texas football teams according to Bally's Check college football John's post ...
~mrchips Wed, Oct 27, 1999 (22:25) #80
I hope TCU has a bad day. Nothing personally against the Horned Frogs, mind you, just as I have nothing personal against the Nittany Lions. I think I just might fancy going to school in a place called Fort Worth or Happy Valley. Both have names that just make you feel good.
~MarciaH Thu, Oct 28, 1999 (02:26) #81
You would LOVE Happy Valley. It is lovely any time of the year and is *sigh* how can I describe what lies so deeply in my being that it defies words to describe it...Shall I bring you some Penn Stater Magazines??? When AM I ever going to see you IRL again?!
~terry Thu, Oct 28, 1999 (09:55) #82
Man, the UT pregame show starts at 8:30 am Saturday, Iowa State I believe. Last week was such a high, I hope they can sustain the energy. It's tough to follow up a huge win.

Maybe if they get naked and play bongos in the locker room before the game?
~MarciaH Thu, Oct 28, 1999 (13:56) #84
There you go, John! (I though that was the usual pregame ritual in the locker room, but then I have never been in one...) That means it begins at 3:30 am for us. They just may have to party on without us for a while. Maybe we should start the night before and include the Penn State and Hawaii games on our tailgate. John???

Terry I found bios on all of the current recruits for UT Football but it is far too long to post here. Catch it at http://utlonghorns.rivals.com/default.asp?sId=201&StId=144438&p=2

What about the flap about Texas canceling the opener with Hawaii. I personally am very unhappy about them doing this, because it would given us much fodder for discussion here. Aside from that, those punk Horns, they should play those Hawaii boys.

It would have been great for both teams and the Spring. I am very disappointed!

Well, UT is ranked as high as number 3 in some polls. I guess they like the two quaterback set up.
~MarciaH Sun, Aug 6, 2000 (23:21) #90

YOu guys should not have backed out of the Hawaii opener. We, as John would say, stinketh like the goatherd.

Yep, that was one punk ass move on the part of UT. They were being overly protective of their top 20 potential and didn't want to risk an upset, not a good excuse. And they missed a trip to Hawaii!

The Horns are working out at Denius Fields in Austin, they are looking pretty good and seem to be really focusing on their running game with Kenny Hayter, Cedric Benson and another guy whose name escapes me right now. I see where they're including Roy Williams in the Heismann list along with Simms. Mel Kiper, Jr., the noted ESPN draft analyst, included UT quarterback Chris Simms and wide receiver Roy Williams in his list of the top 15 Heisman Trophy candidates. Simms was fourth on the list, behind Nebraska quarterback Eric Crouch, Kiper's frontrunner, Clemson quarterback Woody Dantzler, and Oregon State running back Ken Simonton. Kiper said this of Simms: "Texas has the best wide-receiver corps in the history of college football (led by Roy Williams). When you have that kind of skill position talent around you, you're going to be able to throw the football effectively. . . . And this year, Simms should feel more free since the quarterback controversy of last season is past and he's the clear No. 1. With the receivers he has at his disposal, his numbers should be incredible." Kiper saved some of his highest praise for Williams, who he ranked 11th. Kiper said: "Williams is the best player in college football. He's an awesome talent with his size and pass-receiving skills and is the best NFL prospect in college right now."

2 lines "Remember the little boy you visited in the hospital, Major?" While Chris Simms was entertaining a media circus, Major Applewhite spent the post intersquad game time with the little boy he had visited in the hospital. The squad looked good except for the kicking game. Simms and Applewhite were both sharp and the running backs looked great. It was a deja vu the last years high school championship to see Cedric Benson plough his way through the defensive line and break loose. They even rain Cedric out to wide receiver on one play. Texas may have a third Heismann Trophy candidate in Cornerback Quentin Jammer, undoubtedly the best at this position in the country. He'll go high in the NFL Draft next year. It was fun to go to this game, as it was as close a simulation as they could do to the season opening game, they even started at the same time the opener will start, 6 pm. It will probably be another humid Texas Day and Royal Memorial will be filled to capacity. I'm glad I got to relax in a front row seat on the 50 yard line earlier tonight and watch some of the best players in college football. img src="http://www.spring.net/applewhite/DSC00333.JPG"> "I think I know how to keep this job . . . "

If you read today's front page lead story in the Statesman you would be thinking that Texas first game was a blowout. Not the case. The offensive line, 50-60 pounds heavier than New Mexico States, let Baby Simms get sacked repeatedly. NM got about 3 very bad calls on game turning plays. There was no "dominance" here, as the AAS Writer reported. But there was a bright spot. Another dreadlocked runner has arrived, Cedric Benson. He carried the ball seven times in a row and scored a TD, and he dragged a few New Mexico players along with him. He's the real deal. I realized that as I watched and videotaped last years high school championship game, this was the third state championship in a row where he scored 5 touchdowns.

Wow great pictures of Major Applewhite. Wonder how long before they let him play again....! I'd love to see him start again!
