Finally, there is Chris Simms. Some scouts think he can be a big-time sleeper. I�m not an NFL scout, so that may be why I don�t agree with them. His arm is good, not great, and for all the talent he had surrounding him in Texas (arguably the most talented offense in the land the past two years), he was never able to fully utilize his physical gifts. While he should be the last quarterback selected among the five, if some team decides it�ll be a good idea to give him playing time early in his career, Simms NFL days will be short in number and painful in retrospect. It�s not that he couldn�t beat Oklahoma � he didn�t even come close to that � he just couldn�t win the big game period (see 2001 Big 12 Championship; you�ll find it in the college football encyclopedia under the entry "choke job"). I will concede one fact though � while I am trying to be objective with him, I was always a Major Applewhite fan. Oh, and for the record: Ken Dorsey will never be an NFL quarterback. CHRIS SIMMS, Texas, 6-4, 220 -- Son of former NFL great Phil Simms came into college with plenty of hype and never quite lived up to illing. Completed 58.7 percent of passes for 7,097 yards, 58 TDs and 31 INTs during four-year career. Strengths: Smooth left-hander throws a nice, tight spiral. Especially accurate on hook routes and slant patterns. Good size and arm strength. Seems to be improving and will probably benefit from better coaching in NFL. Athletic and can move around. Sets up quickly. Will step up, take a hit and deliver ball in face of strong rush. Good character, team player. Was 25-6 as starter, although he was surrounded by loads of talent. Weaknesses: Often played very poorly in big games, namely against rival Oklahoma and in 2001 Big 12 title game against Colorado, when he was pulled for fan favorite Major Applewhite. Tendency to lock on one receiver, force ball into coverage and throw big INT. Struggles on long balls. Misses open receivers. Throws off back foot sometimes. Needs work on mechanics and long stride. Questions about his ability to perform under pressure. Prediction: Second round. A real dilemma: some scouts focus on his obvious skills, others remember the Oklahoma games. OTHERS TO WATCH: * Ken Dorsey, Miami, 6-4, 208, third-team All-American was 38-2 as starter and helped lead talent-laden Hurricanes to consecutive national title games. i agree completely, on both observations one of the espn talking heads said that sims was the "worst coached" college QB in the country... where do you think that comes from? even given the east-coast arrogance and bias that is expected, this idea, expressed in those terms, could only have come from sims himself... screw him

I don't think Sims would have said that he was the "worst coached" player, from reports I've heard he's a pretty decent guy. I think his let downs in the big games and his tendency to "lock in" on receivers hurt him. He landed in a great spot.
