I like Hot Dog Pro. But that could change by the time you read this. There are a lot of tools for designing web pages out there. What works? What's best for beginners and for advanced web page authors? And where do you get these tools?

I always break down and use Notepad. Sorry, WER

That's actually a very good choice if you know html. Even the wysiwyg editors like FrontPage now offer an option of working directly on the code in a notepad type window. There's an app that comes with FrontPage called FrontPad which is basically notepad for html writers.

Haven't played with it or Publisher97 enough yet. Will get there, though. WER

FrontPage 98 is a free download off of Microsofts website.

I've got one version at work, can't remember which one, though. Can I use it to upload my page(s) to the spring? WER

You can use it to design your pages but we don't *yet* have the FrontPage 98 server extensions on the Spring, I do have a server that has FrontPage Extensions besides the http://www.spring.com box if you want to use that. But it's pretty easy to ftp your stuff. By the way, I already put up a test page for you at that address: http://www.spring.com/~spew

Cool, tried to find it last night and couldn't get there. WER

It's there, I just brought it up in my browser.

I found it, I found it, unfortunately I can't find an ftp client that works with AOL's winsock. WER

Have you checked out the ftp clients on http://cws.internet.com or http://www.stroud.com (same thing)? I use ws_ftp. AOL may have their own that you can download if this doesnt' work.
~KitchenManager Wed, Oct 22, 1997 (01:29) #11
ws_ftp 16 nor 32 works cuteftp no go either I'm probably going to have to install it at work and ftp from there instead of at home oh, well, WER
~terry Wed, Oct 22, 1997 (01:32) #12
Or use aohell's ftp client. What do they recommend?
~KitchenManager Wed, Oct 22, 1997 (01:38) #13
Haven't seen one yet, but really haven't looked, either, as I don't like help file thingys. More fun to do stuff till something works. WER

AOhell has their own winsock I guess, are you using their winsock stack?
~KitchenManager Wed, Oct 22, 1997 (01:44) #15
Don't know, haven't looked. The way they auto update themselves, even if I knew what I installed, I wouldn't know now. All I know is I couldn't install their current version for 95 because it needs a Pentium, and I ain't got one. Oh, yeah, and some ftp clients don't work with it. WER

You know there's an easy way for you to do it via telnet. Just telnet in and open the pico editor and copy and paste your content in and save it as a file. No fuss, no sweat. And if you need more help, I'll be glad to do some more 'splainin.
~KitchenManager Wed, Oct 22, 1997 (23:15) #17
Good, cause I tried the telnet in W95, and it wouldn't let me in. Also found the ftp part of AOL, and it wouldn't let me in, either. Now, unless I've finally found programs I can't figure out, I'm going to try at work on Friday night. WER

Try and see if you can run CRT, which you can find on Forrest's http://www.stroud.com site. I'm beginning to suspect that you need to add AOHells special Internet stack. I remember having to go through some special steps in setting up someones AOHell so that it would perform like a normal system. CRT is a great telnet program, it's what I'm using right now to type this response. http://www.vandyke.com Perhaps we could get some help from the Van Dyke folks on the problems you're having. Is there any form of support at AOHell? Have you tried emailing them?

It is a relief to read of the baby steps which were taken in your early years. I am just as relieved to know that I might be able to walk - even run - with the giants here...if I am lucky and smart enough...!
