The Spring is getting it's own logo. It's a work in progress by CyberArtist Kim. I would really appreciate your input about where to go next with this concept. It's at the top of http://www.spring.net What does it need? How can we expand it. This is going to be on Spring t shirts, mugs, placemats, hats, etc. which we will be selling to raise money to keep this going and will be giving away as prizes and rewards. We'll also use it as our online identity. Ideas? Suggestions?

How about everyone here who is capable submitting their own version of the Spring logo? Maybe we should set about a big redesign of the Spring graphics in general (e.g. buttons, backdrop) - we could run a little competition here, with the best ones being chosen and used. A great way to give people a stake in their community!
~terry #3
I plan on doing just that. You can offer your proposal or you can just critique what we're working on if you're graphically challenged. Mostly, I'd love any form of input and feedback. What do you think of the logo that's there now? Would anything else be better? What are your ideas? Please share!
~KitchenManager #4
I'm thinking, I'm thinking!
~Wolf #5
thought you were gonna have a animated gif of a spring, boing boing boing....
~mikeg #6
I'm gonna get designing...expect logos and buttons soon :)
~autumn #7
Interesting thought, Wolf! To be honest, I always thought "spring" referred to a wellspring (of information), not the season. So I sort of pictured a fountain of water erupting. But your graphic is very nice, Terry.
~terry #8
Kim did a great job on it and she's working on another variant. That's why it's so important to get input now, while she's working on it. I'm hoping to get more input by the weekend.
~zx6rider #9
I know I'm demented now... I hear Spring and see a slinky walking down the stairs. There is no hope.
~KitchenManager #10
*lol* thanks, Gena!
~autumn #11
That's two for the "boing, boing" definition!
~KitchenManager #12
I've been looking, but I can't find any slinky wallpaper... (at least not this definition of...)
~Wolf #13
*giggle* i'll do some checking too
~orange #14
i like the idea of a fountain also--- spraying into a reflecting pool where the word spring is written out in rippling letters and also in the spray in the air would like to see bolder color in the letters--brighter and bolder than aqua or light blue i like the classic european stone, vase-shaped fountain in the center of a round pool, with the spray a traditional circular straight up and falling down pattern maybe a bit of wind-blow in the pattern of the spray letters, perhaps a rainbow or glittering or silvery-metallic tone in the letters of the spray and then in the pool, the letters should be repeated (rather than mirrored) so the word "spring" is seen twice but in the same colors. or alternatively, a stream of water shooting out from some hillside rocks and flowing into a meandering stream where the bubbles in the stream spell out spring.
~Wolf #15
goodness, you really thought that one out! sounds neat
~terry #16
Great ideas, orange, and welcome to you as a first time poster!
~stacey #17
Wow orange, you really put a lot of thought into that, 'looks' beuatiful!
~orange #18
well thanks, but i wouldnt be able to do the graphics at all, so if it helps your design artist, it is a small contribution. but i also realized why the spring logo you have now, is using pale blue and aqua -- so that it complements the light pastels on the topic button faces and there is something to say for that kind of consistency because i do like the grey pattern background and the buttons having different colors (although some i have a hard time telling apart as to color)---i think color is a faster way to blaze a trail than words.
~Wolf #19
my god, orange, when did you pause to take a breath? stacey, is there an echo in here *wink* (great minds think alike!)
~orange #20
oh i am just talking, not writing, so i will start new lines when i take a breath or use dashes sentences are so hard when you dont capitalize
~terry #21
There's somthing comforting to be about all lower case, and something alarmist about all UPPER CASE. Which is one reason why I plan to acquire ee cummings biography soon and why i love the all lowercase website and emails that are so prevalent now.
~mikeg #22
How about the title in a totally wacky nouveau (sp.?) font? Avant-garde, nouveau...ya know what I mean - something really eye-catching? [...searches font directory...]
~orange #23
i have found the spring color scheme very restful and also a perfect reflection of climate colors of very hot and very dry--those pale pastels are often how desert scenes are portrayed (only with more earthtones) but yes, you do need a distinctive logo, some mark of identity was over at znet yesterday and i liked their logo with the big red z i think tying the name to the season, "spring" is limiting, and the coil of a metal spring too trivial---unless you could make something like a puppet or jester on a bouncing spring with a wand and a jester's or clownss face & hat. but still i think the strongest and best symbolic logo is in the idea of a water spring--perhaps that could be an abstract glyph
~mikeg #24
good points. One thing that I think is important; once you've decided on a name, as the Spring obviously has, you have to do the most dynamic thing with it you can. I think a water spring is probably the best thing :)
~Wolf #25
what? no boing boing boing?
~autumn #26
Yeah! Back to the wellspring idea!
~orange #27
scribbled
~zx6rider #28
Well... you could always have a 'boing-boing' coming out of the fountain. A kind of water spout slinky thing.... I'm going now.
~autumn #29
And cover the whole scene with a hairnet.
~KitchenManager #30
I know, I know, it's not what anyone has talked about, but I think it kinda fits the personality...
~mikeg #31
Now *that* I Like!! I haven't had a go at a logo yet - perhaps I'll try today - woo hoo!! Way to go, WER! :)
~terry #32
Wow! Great! Here's the deal, make one with splashing water that says spring. net And I'll have it made in to a t shirt and give you one, wer. I'm gassed.
~stacey #33
I want one too!!!!
~KitchenManager #34
I'm working on putting the sun back in also, but look at
~stacey #35
groovy! (had to go home to look at all the pics!)
~autumn #36
I think it's way too subtle.
~KitchenManager #37
Okay, got the sun back in
~terry #38
Thanks for using .net wer!
~KitchenManager #39
No problem...is this more of what you had in mind? If not, what else you want me to do to it?
~terry #40
I'm in text mode I'll take a look.
~terry #41
Great! I'll get it made into a t shirt when I get back!
~KitchenManager #42
kewl...
~mikeg #43
i'm definitely gonna have a go, right now, tonight...watch this space...maybe I could get a t-shirt too... :)
~autumn #44
Save me one in a size medium!
~terry #45
Go, Mike!
~mikeg #46
OK, I borrowed the water from WER, so full credit to him for that. Here we go...
~KitchenManager #47
Couldn't do one from scratch, huh? *wink*
~mikeg #48
bah...the water was so good i decided to use it
~Wolf #49
ohmigosh, these are way cool!!!!
~mikeg #50
april 27 was the last entry here. oopsies. i'm working on a whole set of new buttons/backdrops for the spring. i'll probably create a "dummy" copy of the spring on my site, with all of the new graphics so you can check them out and tell me what you think. i think it's time to move on from what we've got, to be honest - it's a bit drab and dreary!
~riette #51
Mike, please, please, please send me information on that stuff. And since you are hosting babes, could you please help me. I'm supposed to host Art, but have no idea about how to register myself as host. I've read the online guide, but it doesn't say how to register. I'd love to make the art conference a conference for everyone, a very visual thing which people will enjoy, not see as dry dreary old art fart. I need your veteran advice.
~mikeg #52
you'll have to get terry to set you up as host of Art. if you want a flashy conference banner like in Babes (inspiration drawn from Food, which is hosted by wer) then you'll need an image, first! then just a tiny bit of html code to include it in the banner and you're away! right. my first version of a new-look spring is up at http://www.griggs.demon.co.uk/spring/newlook/confmainpage.html and http://www.griggs.demon.co.uk/spring/newlook/response.html this is obviously only beta, but please let me know what you think. i think the navigation buttons could do with some work, to be honest. seeing as i knocked up all 13 of them in two hours from scratch, they're fairly basic. anyways, let me know what you think.
~KitchenManager #53
Hey, Mike, have you taken a look in food, restaurants, or genx lately? What do you think?
~mikeg #54
i haven't. i shall now.
~mikeg #55
a totally different look for the index page. hit http://www.griggs.demon.co.uk/spring/newlook/test.html i really like the style of this. it'd be lovely to redo the whole place in this vein.
~riette #56
Very nice, Mike!
~mikeg #57
very slight change to make it a little more like what the "real thing" could be hit http://www.griggs.demon.co.uk/spring/newlook/test.html
~mikeg #58
cheers, riette :-)
~mikeg #59
quite a major update to test.html. much more like a real login page, now http://www.griggs.demon.co.uk/test.html
~KitchenManager #60
404 not found error...
~wolf #61
mike, you are one talented dude! (btw, how do i bring images to poetry? i mean, where do i store them?)
~KitchenManager #62
anywhere...not sure what you askin' Wolf...
~wolf #63
ok, like at my site, for example, i save images to my directory (that was created at the server) to use on the site. where do i send images to use here?
~wolf #64
like, instead of saving them to my geocities directory then pulling them from there in my html code to get the image to show up here (would be time-consuming)
~KitchenManager #65
the easiest would be to e-mail them to me and I'll put them in the directory ~spew/wolf
~wolf #66
well, if there's a directory for me, that's all i needed to know (btw, what's the rest?) and will i need to ftp them?
~KitchenManager #67
no...you need to e-mail them to me so I can ftp them or option two: ask Terry for a telnet/homepage account so you can have access or option three: I can give you my name and password for ftp'n...
~wolf #68
ok, i see what you're saying. i'll take option two. terry: (feel like i'm buggin' you guys) would it be possible to set up a telnet/homepage account so as i can begin the poetry conference transformation? *hugs* (you guys have really been very helpful and patient) hey, how'd i get this brown stuff on my nose *grin*
~KitchenManager #69
okay...
~wolf #70
aw now, don't sound so disappointed *smile*
~KitchenManager #71
disappointed? nah, just glad I don't gotta turn over all my tricks yet...
~wolf #72
*laugh*
~riette #73
hello!!! Still hanging in the air here. I've asked, but the addresses you guys send me to tell me what my powers are, not how to get myself set up. Have also mailed Terry, but nothing there. Aren't there like STEPS to follow? Like, 1 - press this and this button 2 - go here 3 - enter this . . . 4 - okay, you're set up? I am an artist, i.e. moron. I work with my hands, the programmes are in my head, I don't work with this technology stuff, I don't know how computer's heads work, so I can't programme it. I have loads of ideas for art, but if it takes an expert to become a host, then I can forget about it now, 'cos I'm not. HELP ME, PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZZZZZZE, somebody. Please show me how to do it by myself, because I don't want to pester other hosts the whole time.
~terry #74
A discussion of hostly powers: http://www.spring.net/help/host.html
~mikeg #75
ack. i typed the last link wrong. http://www.griggs.demon.co.uk/spring/newlook/test.html sorry about that. interesting host stuff, terry.
~riette #76
Very nice, Mike. I read the host thing a few times, Terry, but it only says the (relatively) easy things. It doesn't say how to be creative with one's topic!!!
~mikeg #77
Thanks, Riette. Just trying my best n stuff. how is the topic creativity coming along, Riette? I replied your email a couple of hours ago, I think.
~riette #78
Oh, the creativity is fine, but I hope you'll have an answer about my technical skills at least by the time you read this, so we can pep Art up.
~terry #79
Mike did some creative things with babes, you might want to ask him for details.
~ratthing #80
i wish i could do some creative things with babes.
~riette #81
You're probably doing fine there, otherwise I doubt if she would have said yes!
~mikeg #82
did we ever decide on a Spring logo? It would seem really important to have one. I'm putting together some Spring stuff for my website (including links from the Schiffer pages) and it seems a bit weird not to have a definite logo. what does anyone else think?
~riette #83
Yes, Mike, do a definite logo. I will underline how proud we are of this place.
~riette #84
It, that is. Blame it on the finger - know you know what I'm talking about. Missing playing duets with Chris. Should have thought of that before I jumped off the balcony and got out that vegetable cutter though. damn!
~mikeg #85
ummm...how about: or or perhaps opinions and crit welcome
~wolf #86
i liked the second one, but can it be a bit smaller?
~wolf #87
oh yeah, can anyone recommend a good graphics program?
~riette #88
I have Corel, but I can't figure out how to work it, so I just use the paint programme that's in my computer anyway. Are there good and EASY graphic programmes available? I also like the second one, Mike.
~terry #89
Lview Pro is good for starters and it's free. If you go to http://cws.internet.com (Forrest's site, which we talk about in our apps conference), you can read some great reviews of the various graphics programs and website creation tools. Forrest's reviews lead to the appropriate topic on this system in the apps conference. Graphics isn't my stonrg suit, so others here may have more suggestions. like Corel Draw, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Macromedia's stuff. Take a look at http://www.macromedia.com for some stuff.
~terry #90
Slippage.
~mikeg #91
get photoshop. and get a good book on it. it's the best there is, and not impossible to learn. what did you think of the third one? i rather liked that, although the second one is ok too.
~wolf #92
don't remember what the third one looked like, hang on....
~wolf #93
ok, the second one isn't as busy as the first and third ones. the face gets in the way of the words on the third one, i mean, you're trying to peek around the words to see the face. but the second one is still, by far, my fav.
~mikeg #94
okee
~wolf #95
has anyone else picked one? is the third your fav?
~mikeg #96
well. i do like the second one, but the third, i think, has more "personality". it's telling a bit of its own story (come to the spring, get ideas!), whereas the second is just a bit "pretty clip art and a bit of text" dunno i'll have to reduce them down in size to see which one compresses best
~wolf #97
hmmm...i think they're both inviting. once you get them the way you like, you should post them and we can vote!
~mikeg #98
i think some other people should do some stuff, too. i don't pretend to be the spring artist by any stretch of the imagination
~wolf #99
well, maybe i'll come up with something as soon as i figure out my scanner (AND get it hooked up) and believe me, i'm no artist!
~KitchenManager #100
does photoshop do vector graphics?
~mikeg #101
not really. better to get illustrator for that. illustrator+photoshop is the most fierce combination on the planet, and is what i aspire to.
~KitchenManager #102
a fully functioning one that wasn't shareware or a demo would be fine by me...
~mikeg #103
serious money
~wolf #104
i've got a vector program (shareware) but haven't figured it out yet.
~riette #105
I find that with advanced programmes like photoshop, everything is just too 'there' for my taste. I don't really feel particularly creative around those programmes. They have come up with just about any idea already, so then I just don't bother - I just paste together some of their images and fonts. I also prefer the more nave look, and an African feel, but that's only because that's the style I paint in. (Not very versatile, huh?!) Alot of black, and simple, but BRIGHT colours, and loads of them. So I don't think I'll inflict a Spring logo suggestion on you, Mike. But I'll check out the one you recommended anyway, Terry - might suit me better.
~mikeg #106
i've shrunk the second logo, to see what it looks like in a small version
~wolf #107
now i love that. can you make the background transparent?
~mikeg #108
not easily because of the anti-aliasing around the spring.net text. however, it's a photoshop file, which means that i can change the background colour to whatever i like, without harming the rest of the image, and then save a new copy out. not ideal, but then transparent GIFs are pretty crappy anyway.
~riette #109
Do that, and perhaps change the porche's colour to a nice pink colour or something to make it stand out better. But it's a nice logo.
~KitchenManager #110
or something along the lines of...
~KitchenManager #111
ack...the green doesn't work on the chalk...it's okay, though as you gets the idea...for a different version on a blue background, go look at http://www.spring.net/yapp-bin/restricted/browse/news/all/new
~mikeg #112
yup, nice. might be better if you don't make it a transparent GIF, though. that way, you can have whichever background colour is necessary, and anti-alias all of the text etc. to that background, which would make it look even better.
~KitchenManager #113
actually, it looks better against a background that looks like pool water...
~riette #114
REALLY cool, Wer. The sun thing is a great idea - it has alot of oomf.
~KitchenManager #115
or maybe...
~mikeg #116
v. nice. need to anti-alias the text, then it'd be perfect.
~mikeg #117
( hi wer ) :)
~KitchenManager #118
good morning...I'll have to anti-alias by hand one pixel at a time... might take me a bit...
~mikeg #119
what is the name of the font? if you send me the necessary files, i can install the font and then anti-alias it in photoshop.
~KitchenManager #120
Mexicali...I'll install it on here somewhere so's you can download it at leisure...
~riette #121
Loverly!
~KitchenManager #122
Riette's first sketch for a Spring t-shirt design... (colour copies coming soon...) to view it in it's full size glory, go to http://www.spring.net/~spew/art/rspring1.jpg
~riette #123
FEEL FREE TO PROTEST PEOPLE!!!!
~terry #124
I love it, it's so jungly, but I think we need a little water in it too.
~KitchenManager #125
I've been protesting people for years...
~riette #126
And what would your protest be today, muffin? Also missing the water? Terry, I can't put water in this one - it simply doesn't work. Once Wer has posted the colour versions, I think you'll see why. In the first I did a blue background to suggest water, but that just pushed it that little bit too far. There was no subtlety or imagination left, and therefore it seemed kitchy and blunt. The colours started clashing, because it did not have a darker background to back it up. I don't want to split up the background into two or more colours either, because, again, the colour will clash. The second version I did with slightly different colours, and a black background, and I thought the abundance in flora rather suggested the water and fertility, and the dark background just seemed to help all the colours fall into place better. And so i'm not putting in water - it would spoil this particular design. One could perhaps do the lettering and the little banner in blues, but I actually wanted it to flow from the branches of the tree. ANyway, I would do no more to suggest water han that. But that is merely my opinion, and not the ultimate judgement. If you can't cope with it like this, then that's that- there is absolutely no reason why you HAVE to take it, because there have been plenty other really GOOD suggestions here; it is no more than a suggestion, and I'm sorry I haven't more time to devote to this right now - perhaps when I come back from England, I'll try something different with water, and we can see how that goes. But more than that I simply can't manage right now too much other work to do with the exhibition coming up after the summer holidays.
~terry #127
That's cool Riette. It's a gorgeous drawing and, if you have time when you get back from Merry Old England, perhaps you could please us with a watery image. When do you actually depart?
~autumn #128
Very nice, Riette! How long did that sketch take you??
~KitchenManager #129
colour version number one...
~KitchenManager #130
hmmm... let's try that again...
~KitchenManager #131
oh, good, in that case, colour version 2 is
~KitchenManager #132
ack...
~riette #133
I'm leaving for England tonight, but I'll do something with water as soon as I get back, okay, Terry? I really don't know how long it took, Autumn - twenty minutes, I guess. I don't really count.
~KitchenManager #134
have a safe trip and see you when you get back... do you mind if I give colouring it a whirl?
~riette #135
Sure, Wer, spank-it-roll-it-kiss-it-colour-it-pin-it-blow-it! Thanks - I'll miss you all.
~terry #136
I love it Riette! Have a wonderful trip. I'll miss you!
~riette #137
Well, now you don't have to anymore. Missed you too.
~KitchenManager #138
and the newest entry is: by the ever talented Riette...
~riette #139
hardly By the ever cool and edgy Wer, that should read!
~KitchenManager #140
I'll take minor secondary assistance credit only... you did the art!
~terry #141
It's a wonderful creative collaboration. I love this place!
~riette #142
SO DO I
~wolf #143
was this the one in oil? cuz it never came up on my puter (i got the graphic goes here thing with an x in it). anyway, i luv it!
~KitchenManager #144
and again...
~KitchenManager #145
and a small logo for buttons and links back to here, how about
~wolf #146
i likes that. who did the brushwork for the text?
~KitchenManager #147
Paint Shop Pro... it's a font I gots installed on my computer...cool, huh?
~wolf #148
yeah! i've gone out to free font sites but can't get them to download. any clues?
~KitchenManager #149
nope...I'm thinking about putting that one up on here to download...we'll see if'n you can download that one once I get it up...
~wolf #150
thanks! oh, while i'm thinking about it, how does one go about aligning pics? let me explain. ok, i've got two pics, two different sizes but i want to keep them that way. i would like to be able to center the small one in relation to the larger one and have them next to each other. how do i put that in code?
~KitchenManager #151
I think, in the img tag use valign="center" for each image... otherwise, you can do it with tables...
~wolf #152
ok, i'll try the valign thing, not good with tables yet. thanks so much! *hugs*
~terry #153
Everything's good. And here's a hug for you wolfie: What we need is something awesomely sensual, insanely great. Something that reaches out and electrifies you. Riette has it in her. I see the seed of greatness.
~riette #154
Love that little button thing, Wer!! Terry, careful. Feeling pain reading that - must be the ego growing. But thank you.
