Spring Logo - your ideas?

The Spring is getting it's own logo. It's a work in progress by
CyberArtist Kim. I would really appreciate your input about where to go
next with this concept.
It's at the top of http://www.spring.net
What does it need? How can we expand it. This is going to be on Spring
t shirts, mugs, placemats, hats, etc. which we will be selling to raise
money to keep this going and will be giving away as prizes and rewards.
We'll also use it as our online identity.
Ideas? Suggestions?

How about everyone here who is capable submitting their own version of the Spring logo? Maybe we should set about a big redesign of the Spring graphics in general (e.g. buttons, backdrop) - we could run a little competition here, with the best ones being
chosen and used. A great way to give people a stake in their community!

I plan on doing just that. You can offer your proposal or you can just
critique what we're working on if you're graphically challenged.
Mostly, I'd love any form of input and feedback. What do you think of
the logo that's there now? Would anything else be better? What are
your ideas? Please share!

Interesting thought, Wolf! To be honest, I always thought "spring" referred to a wellspring (of information), not the season. So I sort of pictured a fountain of water erupting. But your graphic is very nice, Terry.

Kim did a great job on it and she's working on another variant. That's
why it's so important to get input now, while she's working on it. I'm
hoping to get more input by the weekend.

i like the idea of a fountain also---
spraying into a reflecting pool where the word spring is written out
in rippling letters and also in the spray in the air
would like to see bolder color in the letters--brighter and bolder than
aqua or light blue
i like the classic european stone, vase-shaped fountain in the center
of a round pool, with the spray a traditional circular straight up
and falling down pattern
maybe a bit of wind-blow in the pattern of the spray letters,
perhaps a rainbow or glittering or silvery-metallic tone in the
letters of the spray
and then in the pool, the letters should be repeated (rather than mirrored)
so the word "spring" is seen twice but in the same colors.
or alternatively, a stream of water shooting out from some hillside rocks and flowing into a meandering stream where the bubbles in the stream spell out spring.

well thanks, but i wouldnt be able to do the graphics at all, so if it helps your design artist, it is a small contribution.
but i also realized why the spring logo you have now, is using pale blue
and aqua -- so that it complements the light pastels on the topic button
faces and there is something to say for that kind of consistency because
i do like the grey pattern background and the buttons having different
colors (although some i have a hard time telling apart as to
color)---i think color is a faster way to blaze a trail than words.

There's somthing comforting to be about all lower case, and
something alarmist about all UPPER CASE. Which is one reason why
I plan to acquire ee cummings biography soon and why i love the
all lowercase website and emails that are so prevalent now.

i have found the spring color scheme very restful and also a perfect reflection of climate colors of very hot and very dry--those pale pastels are often how desert scenes are portrayed (only with more earthtones)
but yes, you do need a distinctive logo, some mark of identity
was over at znet yesterday and i liked their logo with the big red z
i think tying the name to the season, "spring" is limiting, and the coil of a metal spring too trivial---unless you could make something like a puppet or jester on a bouncing spring with a wand and a jester's or clownss face & hat.
but still i think the strongest and best symbolic logo is in the idea
of a water spring--perhaps that could be an abstract glyph

good points.
One thing that I think is important; once you've decided on a name, as the Spring obviously has, you have to do the most dynamic thing with it you can.
I think a water spring is probably the best thing :)

i'm working on a whole set of new buttons/backdrops for the spring. i'll probably create a "dummy" copy of the spring on my site, with all of the new graphics so you can check them out and tell me what you think.

Mike, please, please, please send me information on that stuff. And since you are hosting babes, could you please help me. I'm supposed to host Art, but have no idea about how to register myself as host. I've read the online guide, but it doesn't say how to register. I'd love to make the art conference a conference for everyone, a very visual thing which people will enjoy, not see as dry dreary old art fart. I need your veteran advice.

you'll have to get terry to set you up as host of Art. if you want a flashy conference banner like in Babes (inspiration drawn from Food, which is hosted by wer) then you'll need an image, first! then just a tiny bit of html code to include it in the banner and you're away!
right. my first version of a new-look spring is up at

and

this is obviously only beta, but please let me know what you think. i think the navigation buttons could do with some work, to be honest. seeing as i knocked up all 13 of them in two hours from scratch, they're fairly basic. anyways, let me know what you think.

Lview Pro is good for starters and it's free. If you go to

programs and website creation tools. Forrest's reviews lead to the
appropriate topic on this system in the apps conference.

I find that with advanced programmes like photoshop, everything is just too
'there' for my taste. I don't really feel particularly creative around those programmes. They have come up with just about any idea already, so then
I just don't bother - I just paste together some of their images and fonts.
I also prefer the more nave look, and an African feel, but that's only because that's the style I paint in. (Not very versatile, huh?!) Alot of black, and simple, but BRIGHT colours, and loads of them. So I don't think I'll inflict a Spring logo suggestion on you, Mike.
But I'll check out the one you recommended anyway,
Terry - might suit me better.

~mikeg
Sat, Jul 11, 1998 (20:23)
#108
not easily because of the anti-aliasing around the spring.net text. however, it's a photoshop file, which means that i can change the background colour to whatever i like, without harming the rest of the image, and then save a new copy out. not ideal, but then transparent GIFs are pretty crappy anyway.
~riette

I've been protesting people for years...

And what would your protest be today, muffin? Also missing the water?
Terry, I can't put water in this one - it simply doesn't work. Once Wer has posted the colour versions, I think you'll see why. In the first I did a blue background to suggest water, but that just pushed it that little bit too far. There was no subtlety or imagination left, and therefore it seemed kitchy and blunt. The colours started clashing, because it did not have a darker background to back it up. I don't want to split up the background into two or more colours either, because, again, the colour
will clash. The second version I did with slightly different colours, and a black background, and I thought the abundance in flora rather suggested the water and fertility, and the dark background just seemed to help all the colours fall into place better. And so i'm not putting in water - it would spoil this particular design. One could perhaps do the lettering and the little banner in blues, but I actually wanted it to flow from the branches of the tree. ANyway, I would do no more to suggest water
han that. But that is merely my opinion, and not the ultimate judgement. If you can't cope with it like this, then that's that- there is absolutely no reason why you HAVE to take it, because there have been plenty other really GOOD suggestions here; it is no more than a suggestion, and I'm sorry I haven't more time to devote to this right now - perhaps when I come back from England, I'll try something different with water, and we can see how that goes. But more than that I simply can't manage right now
too much other work to do with the exhibition coming up after the summer holidays.

That's cool Riette. It's a gorgeous drawing and, if you have time when
you get back from Merry Old England, perhaps you could please us with a
watery image. When do you actually depart?

thanks! oh, while i'm thinking about it, how does one go about aligning pics? let
me explain. ok, i've got two pics, two different sizes but i want to keep them
that way. i would like to be able to center the small one in relation to the larger
one and have them next to each other. how do i put that in code?

I think, in the img tag use
valign="center" for each image...
otherwise, you can do it with tables...

ok, i'll try the valign thing, not good with tables yet. thanks so much! *hugs*
